Smoke on the Water

A New Year’s Day blaze at the newly restored Fairmount Water Works has delayed the opening of an interpretive center and restaurant at the site, but plans are still underway to turn the 200-year-old Schuylkill River landmark into a tourist attraction, according to Philadelphia Water Department spokesman Ed Grusheski G’74, a key player in the project [“Rebirth on the River,” January/February 2000]. A recent engineer’s report showed the damage was not as extensive as had been initially feared, and Grusheski expects the center to open in the fall.
