Sing on, old friend….

Some voices are irrepressible, some spirits inextinguishable. And some things are just awfully hard to write, such as this: Bruce Montgomery—Monty to most—died suddenly at his summer home in Spruce Head Island, Maine on June 21, the day after his 81st birthday. The large-hearted former director of the Penn Glee Club and the Penn Singers was more than just a gifted composer and the guiding light of the local Gilbert & Sullivan scene; he was also a vital inspiration to countless students, colleagues, and other friends. On Sunday, October 5, a memorial service filled with song will be held at Irvine Auditorium; see www.montyart.com for details. A full obituary will appear in the Nov|Dec Gazette, but for a taste of his ebullient style, see “Monty in Full,” May|June 2000.
