Philadelphia’s “Mayor of the Arts”

The beloved Sam Maitin FA’51 is back on campus this winter—in spirit and the joyful splashes of color that endeared the late artist to several generations of Philadelphians who encountered his ebullient collages and paintings in public spaces of all kinds. “We the People: Sam Maitin” presents 26 of his works in the Annenberg Center for Performing Arts through February 21. They range from gouache and paper collages, to watercolor and acrylic paintings on canvas, to lithographs—including one of the 20 covers he illustrated for the Gazette. Meanwhile visitors to Van Pelt-Dietrich Library can take in another seven of his posters in a fifth-floor alcove near the east elevator bay, where “Maitin in Philadelphia: Mayor of the Arts” will brighten an otherwise subdued space through December 19.
