As a student at Penn, she was a member of Sigma Delta Tau sorority and the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. As an alumna, she was a longtime volunteer for her class, established several awards and programs with her husband, the late Arlin Adams L’47 Hon’98, and received the Alumni Award of Merit in 1994.

Patricia R. Adams CGS’99, Flourtown, PA, a retired Penn administrator whose career spanned multiple departments and who most recently served as director of human resources for Penn Nursing; June 12. She joined Penn’s staff in 1985. Her career included positions in the Wharton School, Information Systems and Computing (ISC), and ultimately the School of Nursing. In 1995, she served on the Task Force to Restructure Computing Services Across Penn, which brought Penn into the internet age. At Penn Nursing, she led several initiatives, including the Staff Awards Program, Professional Development Week, and the annual performance review process, among many others. She retired from Penn in 2022.

Victor H. Mair, a professor of Chinese language and literature in the department of East Asian languages and civilizations in Penn’s School of Arts and Sciences; June 28. He came to Penn in 1979 and taught courses on Buddhist popular literature and on the vernacular tradition of Chinese fiction and the performing arts. In 1990, he led a faculty push to rename Penn’s department of Oriental studies to the department of Asian and Middle Eastern studies. He researched, lectured, and published peer-reviewed articles on the influence of Sanskrit meter on Chinese poetry, the tangled relation between oral Chinese and its script [“Gazetteer,” Mar|Apr 2014], and the multifaceted history of tea [“Steeped in Tea,” Jan|Feb 2010]. During the 1990s, he organized an interdisciplinary research project, partly funded by Penn’s University Research Council, on the Bronze Age and Iron Age mummies of Eastern Central Asia. His efforts resulted in three television documentaries, a major international conference, numerous articles, and a book (as well as a Gazette feature in our Jan|Feb 2011 issue, “When West Went East”). He held visiting professorships at the University of Hong Kong, the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, the Institute for Research in Humanities at Kyoto University, and Duke University. Daniel R. Vining Jr., Haddonfield, NJ, professor emeritus of regional science at Penn; April 19. He was on the faculty at Penn from 1974 to 2006. Despite a devastating stroke in his early 40s, he kept researching, writing, and working with students until he retired. He served in the Marine Corps Reserve during the Vietnam War, and as a volunteer English teacher at a high school in Vietnam from 1966 to 1968. Two children are Dr. Ella Rutledge Vining M’01 and Dr. Daniel K. Vining M’03 GM’07 (Susannah H. Vining L’06).

Eric S. Weinberg, Philadelphia, professor emeritus of biology in Penn’s School of Arts and Sciences; March 24. In 1979, he joined Penn’s faculty as an associate professor of biology, becoming a full professor in 1996. At Penn, he was among the first to clone, sequence, and characterize histone genes, helping to define how genome organization and transcriptional regulation unfold during early development. These studies, which involved work with sea urchins, established him as a leader in the emerging field of molecular developmental biology. Later, he pivoted his research and became an early adopter of the zebrafish as a model for vertebrate development, contributing to foundational work on embryonic patterning, axis formation, and gene regulation. During his time at Penn, he also taught in the College of Liberal & Professional Studies and in the Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine. He retired in 2019. His daughter is Tanya Weinberg Yahana C’94.
