This summer a new garden was unveiled at West Philadelphia High School at 47th and Walnut streets, the latest to open as part of the Agatson Urban Nutrition Initiative at Penn’s Netter Center for Community Partnerships. Besides making students more familiar with healthy foods, the gardens are also linked to participating schools’ science curriculums. Here, Maggie Goldman, a Penn Nursing student and AUNI intern, and high schoolers Xavier Brown, Shanta Pitt, and Shantelle Forman tend the crops, which include herbs and vegetables, native plants, and fruit trees.
