A Place for Community—and Kosher Dining

“[It’s] a milestone in the history of the Jewish presence at Penn,” said David Stern, director of the Jewish Studies program. He was referring to the opening of Steinhardt Hall, a light-filled, $12 million building that will serve as the new, expanded hub of activity for Penn’s Jewish community and Hillel of Greater Philadelphia.

Located on 39th Street, between Walnut and Locust, the 36,000-square foot space (built by Jacobs/Wyper Architects) houses Penn’s only kosher dining facility, a Hebrew-language study center and library, an auditorium, a library, and activity rooms. Among the several hundred in attendance at the October dedication were Michael (W’60) and Judy Steinhardt, who helped pay for construction with a $2.5 million gift.
