Philadelphia’s first winter storm of 2016 was a doozy for the Division of Facilities and Real Estate Services, which is responsible for clearing approximately 1.3 million square feet of walkways. The 22 inches of snow that fell on them during the fourth weekend in January would have been enough (uncompacted and unsalted) to fill the Palestra to the rafters, or to fill Franklin Field to roughly the third row of bleachers. Students had FRES crews and a sunny Sunday to thank—or blame—for the regularly scheduled resumption of classes on Monday morning.
