Dr. Harry J. Gray EE’44 GEE’47 GrE’53, Philadelphia, professor emeritus in electrical and systems engineering in the School of Engineering & Applied Science; July 27. He was appointed to the Penn faculty in 1953, and retired in 1989. He was one of 30 computer pioneers involved with ENIAC, the first electronic general-purpose computer. Dr. Justin Aronfreed C’51, Wynnewood, Pa., professor emeritus of psychology at Penn; Aug. 18. He was appointed assistant professor in 1959, rising through the ranks to professor, and retiring as emeritus professor in 1999. His book, Conduct and Conscience (1968), is deemed a landmark on the development of psychological mechanisms that account for character, and that explain empathy and altruism. For many decades, Dr. Aronfreed was the principal teacher of the fundamental introductory course in developmental psychology. A daughter is Dr. Jessica M. Aronfreed C’82 and his son is Eric L. Aronfreed C’83.

He was appointed an assistant professor in 1958, chaired the department from 1971 to 1978, and retired in 1995 with emeritus status. He specialized in statistical computing, statistics in clinical trials, and statistics as legal evidence. Dr. de Cani co-wrote Basic Statistics with Business Applications (1973). He won Penn’s Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1964.

She was Penn Dental’s first woman professor, and founded and chaired Women for Equal Opportunity at the University of Pennsylvania, leading Penn to numerous advances in its programs for women. Dr. Leboy received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2005, and was president of the Association for Women in Science. Dr. Annemarie Weber, Merion, Pa., professor emerita of biochemistry and biophysics at the Perelman School of Medicine; July 5. She joined the Penn faculty in 1972, and retired with emeritus status in 1998. She had done pioneering work on the role of calcium as intracellular messengers. Dr. Weber received the Berwick Award in 1985 and the Provost’s Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2001.
