63 Ed Mannino C’63 L’66 published his fifth book, Faith of our Fathers: An American Catholic History, in August. Based on a course he taught at Penn, it surveys the history of American Roman Catholics from the American Revolution through today; it is available in hardback, softcover, and Kindle editions. 64 Carole Alderman CW’64 recently retired from the teaching profession. She began her career in Cheltenham, Pa., teaching Spanish. After moving to New England, she taught Spanish and Latin in the Hampden-Wilbraham Regional School District in Massachusetts. Although she had full retirement eligibility four years ago, she found it difficult to leave the work for which she had a passion.

Lew Knickerbocker WG’64 has published his third book, Jockey on a Crocodile, a Memoir—Almost. “It is a romp through the espionage networks of the 1950s. Sylvester Van Zandt pens his memoirs as a Korean War hero and an early spy for the CIA.” Lew recently became a great-grandfather for the third time.
65 Alia Sayegh GEd’65 Gr’74 has written Body in the Brine, a murder mystery based in a New Jersey seaside town. She also wrote the novel Alex in the Promised Land (1995), and co-wrote a recently published guide to aging, Escape from the Green Recliner, both available on Amazon.
Stroud Watson GAr’65 was recently presented with a lifetime-achievement award for public architecture by the Tennessee AIA. This coincided with a 25-year retrospective in downtown Chattanooga of Urban Design Studio, which he founded in 1981 (www.chattanoogastudio.com).
66 Susan T. Marx CW’66 was elected president of the Penn Club of New York—and encourages all her classmates to visit the beautiful facility in midtown Manhattan. She still runs her fundraising-consulting company, raising monies for a wide range of non-profits. Last January, she spent a week in Brazil, training the staff of a national women’s health organization in effective fundraising strategies. She travels between New York and San Francisco with her husband, Philip Kivitz. And in her free time, she sculpts in stone. Susan remains active at Penn, participating on the Trustees Council of Penn Women, and recently joined the board of the Field Center for Children’s Policy, Practice, and Research. She is vice president of the Class of 1966 and encourages “everyone to attend our upcoming BIG reunion in 2016! Looking forward to reconnecting.”

For 10 years, [I have] owned the acclaimed H Street Playhouse, which was at the forefront of the revitalization of the H Street Northeast corridor, a commercial strip that had remained stagnant since being burned out during the 1968 riots. After losing [my] husband in 2009, [I] sold the Playhouse building and leased it back for three years; that lease ends after the first of the year and the theater will relocate. Anacostia is an historic neighborhood east of the Anacostia River and is currently in a rebuilding and renewal phase. It is hoped that the theater can be an integral part of this process, helping bring new foot traffic and dollars to a traditionally underserved community.”

70 Gilbert Lang Mathews W’70 is the founding CEO of Lucifer Lighting Company, a maker of precision-engineered architectural lighting fixtures, based in San Antonio, Tex. In May, he was given honorary membership in the American Institute of Architects.
Richard Pell W’70 is senior vice president of administration for Genesis HealthCare in Kennett Square, Pa. In July, he received the Joe Warner Patient Advocacy Award from the American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living as he had “worked diligently to educate members of Congress about the needs of long-term care patients and residents and to advance quality care in long term and post-acute care facilities.”
71 Dayton Duncan C’71 has “a new documentary, The Dust Bowl, coming out Nov. 18 and 19 on PBS stations, chronicling the worst man-made ecological disaster in American history.” He wrote the documentary and produced it with his long-time collaborator Ken Burns, and wrote the companion book, which is being published by Chronicle Books.
72 Robert E. Litan W’72 assumed a new position in August as director of research of Bloomberg-Gov in Washington. His latest book, which he co-wrote, Better Capitalism, was published by Yale University Press in September.

Dibner C’73 writes that he is enjoying life in North Carolina and winding down “a fun and motley career.” He has been “a scientist, author of 12 books on biotechnology, adjunct associate professor (Duke, NC State), and entrepreneur, having started three small businesses.” In 2003, he and his son, Ned, then 13, “founded the Kramden Institute, Inc., a charity which collects, recycles, and donates computers to hardworking students who cannot afford a home computer. What started as a basement father/son project now has three paid staff, over 6,000 volunteers, and has just awarded its 11,500th computer (www.kramden.org).” Mark recently turned 60 atop Machu Picchu, and he and his wife, Elaine, will celebrate their 30th anniversary soon in Costa Rica and the Panama Canal.
Tyler E. Williams III C’73 writes, “On March 26, I was sworn in as substitute judge for the district courts of Virginia’s Tenth Judicial Circuit, an area encompassing eight counties in Southside Virginia. I will be allowed to maintain my private practice located in Charlotte Court House.”
74 Harve D. Hnatiuk EE’74 has been elected the 2012-13 vice president of the National Society of Professional Engineers; he will serve as president in 2014-15. A professional engineer registered in 13 states, he has been a member of the society since 1980 and served on its board since 2010.

Malloy L’76, a Distinguished Professor and Scholar at the University of the Pacific’s law school, presented a paper last April at a conference on the EU sovereign-debt crisis at the University of Connecticut law school. Two of his articles were included in Financial Crisis, Globalisation, and Regulatory Reform, which was published recently by the Athens Institute for Education and Research.

78 Elliott Branch W’78, Alexandria, Va., is the deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for acquisition and procurement in the US Department of the Navy. In September, he received a ‘Sammie’ (Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medal) from the Partnership for Public Service, a nonpartisan non-profit in Washington; the awards “pay tribute to America’s dedicated federal workforce, [especially] those who have made significant contributions to our country.” He had received Presidential Rank Awards for a Meritorious Executive in 1996 and 2009.
Nancy Easterlin C’78, Research Professor of English and professor of women’s and gender studies at the University of New Orleans, has published A Biocultural Approach to Literary Theory and Interpretation, which was published by the John Hopkins University Press in May. She had been awarded a year-long Guggenheim Fellowship (2008) in support of the book project.
79 William Volk C’79 wrote in September, “I’m celebrating over 32 years in the video-game industry this year. I’m currently the CCO of PlayScreen, a publisher of social games, mainly for the iPhone. Our recent crossword-type game, Crickler, overtook the iPhone version of The New York Times [crossword] in rankings at launch, and has a loyal group of fans who create puzzles on all sorts of subjects. I will be speaking at the GDC-Online conference in Austin in October. I’m still riding my bicycle almost every day (I was on the Penn Cycling Club), including my daily commute from Carlsbad to Encinitas [Calif.], and have completed a few 200km ‘brevets’ (time-restricted bicycle rides) over the last two years.”

80 Leonard A. Bernstein C’80 W’80 is a partner in the Philadelphia office of the law firm of Reed Smith LLP and the founding chair of its financial-services regulatory group. In August, he was appointed chair of the pro-bono subcommittee and director of pro bono for the ABA’s consumer financial-services committee; he has long lent pro-bono support for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and Philadelphia’s Support Center for Child Advocates.
Joe Campbell ME’80 reported in August that he was in the midst of transitioning from active duty in the US Navy. The ceremony celebrating his retirement as a rear admiral was held in June and attended by a number of alumni, including his daughter Colleen Campbell C’10, Audrey Mirsky-Ashby C’80, Ramona V. Harkins SAMP’79, Rich Sweeney W’80, and Paul VanderVoort C’80. In August, the event-filled summer continued at North Carolina’s Outer Banks when Joe, Colleen, Audrey, Ramona, and Paul were joined by Linda L. Bernfeld SAMP’80 and Mark Bernfeld WG’80 for a week of sun and fun.

They met freshman year in the Commons Dining Hall, “proving that there are indeed a few good things to be found at Commons.” After graduating from Penn, she earned her M.Phil in politics from the University of Cambridge, while he completed his training at the US Naval Nuclear Power School; he recently returned from a deployment to the Middle East.
12 Andrew Harrington W’12, New Richland, Minn., was recently a student teacher in a service and social-entrepreneurship program of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation, which took place in Huacas, Costa Rica, last summer. His team’s goal was launch an ecotourism business by December.
