Richard A. Harter Ed’53, Hilton Head Island, S.C., a nationally prominent basketball coach who, as an assistant coach from 1958 to 1965 then coach from 1966 to 1971, started a resurgence of men’s basketball at Penn; March 12. As a student, he won three varsity letters in basketball; a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, he was in the Friars Senior Society. Dick Harter later coached at the University of Oregon and Penn State, before serving as head coach and assistant coach for several NBA teams. He was inducted into the Big Five Hall of Fame in 1993 and was an inaugural inductee of the Penn Athletics Hall of Fame, 1996. Dr. Robert Summers, Philadelphia, professor emeritus of economics in the School of Arts & Sciences; April 17. He is is best known for his path-breaking work, with Penn professors Dr. Alan Heston and Dr. Irving B. Kravis Ed’38 Gr’47, in developing the Penn World Tables, which allow economists to measure aggregates and prices across nations and over time. Dr. Summers was awarded the Lindback Award in 1967, and was named a distinguished fellow of the American Economics Association in 1998, and elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2001. His wife is Dr. Anita Summers, professor emeritus of public policy, management, real estate, and education in the Wharton School. Two of their sons are Dr. Richard F. Summers M’84, whose wife is Ronnie L. Bloom C’80 L’85 and their son is Samuel Summers C’12; and John S. Summers L’84, whose wife is Jane S. Marans C’79. Dr. Robert Summers’ own brother was the famous economist Paul Samuelson and his third son is Lawrence Summers, who had served as US Treasury Secretary.
Dr. Bernard Wailes, London, associate professor emeritus of anthropology and associate curator emeritus of European archaeology at the Penn Museum; March 30. Director of Penn excavations at a site in Ireland, he co-wrote Dún Ailinne: Excavations at an Irish Royal Site 1968-1975. He served as editor of the Museum’s magazine, Expedition, from 1978 to 1987.
Dr. Walter Wales, Philadelphia, emeritus professor of physics and astronomy; Dec. 28. He came to Penn in 1959 and was appointed full professor in 1972; he specialized in experimental particle physics. He served in many positions in the university administration, including chair of the physics dept., interim dean, deputy provost, and University ombudsman. Dr. Wales was a former executive secretary of the High-Energy Physics Advisory Panel for the Atomic Energy Commission. Devoted to teaching, he won the Ira Abrams Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1990; he taught almost every semester until illness forced him to stop last year.
Dr. Herbert Wilf, Philadelphia, the Thomas A. Scott Professor Emeritus of Mathematics; Jan. 7. He joined Penn in 1962 and retired in 2008. A pioneer in the mathematical programming of early computers, he co-wrote Mathematical Methods for Digital Computers (1960); he also wrote the textbook Mathematics for the Physical Sciences (1962). He co-founded The Journal of Algorithms in 1980 and The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics in 1994, and was editor-in-chief of The American Mathematical Monthly(1987-92). Dr. Wilf won the Leroy P. Steele Prize of the American Mathematical Society for Seminal Contributions to Research in 1998. He was an early advocate of the open electronic publishing of books and journals.
Dr. Wayne L. Worrell, Penn Valley, Pa., professor emeritus of materials science and engineering; Feb. 18. He joined the Penn faculty in 1965 and retired in 2005. From 1986 to 1992, he served as dean of graduate education and research in SEAS. He had an international reputation for high-temperature materials research for his work on corrosion mechanisms and solid-oxide fuel cells. Dr. Worrell was former chair of the National Research Council on High Temperature Science and Technology. He was a past president of the Electrochemical Society and received its Carl Wagner Memorial Award. His wife is Judith Deignan Worrell GNu’71.
