Penn President Amy Gutmann in August announced the appointment of a new vice president for government and community affairs: Vanda McMurtry, who held a similar post at Cornell University and was formerly chief counsel for the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance as well as Aetna’s senior vice president for federal government relations, was slated to arrive at Penn in October.

His responsibilities will include directing the University’s relationship with state, local, and federal governments as well as non-governmental groups at the community and national levels.

“Van has a deep understanding of the important role that collaborative relationships with government and community play in the success of the University, and is known and respected in the highest levels of government,” Gutmann said. “He will be an outstanding addition to our leadership team.”
