“New Man in College Hall” was the headline on an article in the October 1970 Gazette about Martin Meyerson Hon’70’s decidedly low-key first day as president of the University, a post he would hold until 1981 (download a pdf of the story).

For the cover, the 47-year-old Meyerson was photographed in front of the Franklin statue on College Green, which landscape architect Laurie Olin (featured on this issue’s cover) would help transform into Blanche P. Levy Park during his administration. Meyerson died June 2.
