President-elect Amy Gutmann has chosen Joann Mitchell, an administrator with both Penn and Princeton on her resume, to fill the role of Penn’s vice president and chief of staff. Currently the vice provost for administration at Princeton, Mitchell served as Penn’s director for affirmative action for seven years. She will return to campus for her new job on July 1.
“Joann is an extraordinarily talented administrator and will be a tremendous asset to Penn,” Gutmann said. “She is unusually adept at managing complex issues involving faculty and senior administrators.”
Active in civic affairs, Mitchell is president of the board of the McCarter Theatre Center and serves on the boards of International Schools Services, Inc.; the Association of Black Women in Higher Education; the Women’s Law Project; and the New Jersey Supreme Court’s Committee on Minority Concerns.
