The first published photos by Mary Ellen Mark FA’62 ASC’64—who died on May 25—appeared in the March 1964 issue of The Pennsylvania Gazette, while she was still a graduate student at the Annenberg School for Communication. Besides having the good sense to give her work, then-editor Robert M. “Dusty” Rhodes presciently devoted the whole of his editor’s letter to Mark, headlining it “She Wants To Be A Magazine Photographer” and concluding “I think she just might make it.” He also noted that her earnings would “enable her to buy her first camera.”
We reproduce here the cover Mark shot for that issue and have posted the full article “Six of CW’s 1,283,” [March 1964], along with Rhodes’ column. A formal obituary will appear in the Sept|Oct 2015 issue. —J.P.
