Fulfilling the promise to recruit faculty members whose teaching and research spans multiple disciplines, Penn has named Dr. John L. Jackson Jr. as the first Penn Integrates Knowledge (PIK) professor. He arrives following an associate professorship in Cultural Anthropology at Duke University, with a secondary appointment in African and African American Studies. His extensive work in American race relations has earned him numerous grants and awards, including the Woodrow Wilson Career Enhancement Award, the National Humanities Center’s Lilly Endowment Fellowship, and Harvard Medical School’s William F. Milton Fund. He has also produced several acclaimed documentaries and international film shorts. Jackson’s publications include Real Black: Adventures in Racial Sincerity and Harlemworld: Doing Race and Class in Contemporary Black America.

Jackson received his Ph.D. in anthropology from Columbia University in 2000. He earned his B.A. in communications, graduating summa cum laude, from Howard University in 1993. At Penn, he will become the Richard Perry University Associate Professor of Communications and Anthropology, holding joint appointments in the Annenberg School for Communication and the School of Arts and Sciences.

The PIK initiative addresses one component of President Amy Gutmann’s Penn Compact: to integrate knowledge from multiple fields in order to address the most challenging and practical issues of our time.
