Appointments | Craig Carnaroli W’85 has been appointed Penn’s new executive vice president. Reporting directly to President Amy Gutmann, he manages the areas of finance, public safety, human resources, information systems and computing, audit and compliance, investments, and business services.
Coming to the University from Merrill Lynch four years ago, Carnaroli most recently was Penn’s senior vice president for finance and treasurer. In announcing his appointment, Gutmann pointed to his “extensive knowledge of the University, impressive record as a team builder, and strong stewardship of the University’s financial resources.” She also credited him with playing “an important role” in the financial turnaround of Penn’s Health System, which had amassed nearly $300 million in debt in the late 1990s.
Carnaroli replaces General Clifford Stanley, who resigned from the post last October, less than a year after being recruited to Penn from the U.S. Marine Corps. Stanley’s predecessor, John Fry, had served as EVP for seven years before leaving to become president of Franklin & Marshall College.
Unlike his last two predecessors, Carnaroli won’t oversee real estate at Penn. Omar Blaik, the senior vice president for facilities and real estate services, will continue reporting directly to the president.
In other news, Kristin A. Gilbertson has been named chief investment officer for the University, where she will oversee management of its $3.9 billion endowment. Before coming to Penn, she managed public equities for Stanford University’s endowment.
H. Carton Rogers III has been named vice provost and director of libraries—a post he has held in an interim capacity since April 2003. He is responsible for 14 libraries on campus, the Center for Judaic Studies at 420 Walnut Street, and Penn’s Digital Library. —S.F.
