Dr. Eli P. Zebooker D’40, Philadelphia, a retired dentist who maintained a practice in Center City Philadelphia for nearly four decades; June 6, at 105. He helped create a program for the Children’s Aid Society that allowed 6,000 children in foster care to receive proper dental treatment. He served in the US Army during World War II.

Anthony Caputo W’41, Burgaw, NC, a retired colonel in the US Marine Corps; Oct. 11, 2017. He served in the US Marines in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam. He also served as diplomat as military attaché at the US Embassy in Sweden and received the Congressional Gold Medal for his service, among other honors. At Penn, he was a member of the men’s basketball and baseball teams.

Harold G. DeArment GEE’50, St. Petersburg, FL, a retired US Army colonel and real estate broker; April 11. During his military career, he served in Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Alabama, Korea, West Germany, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. He served in the US Army during World War II and was among the soldiers who discovered and liberated the Dachau concentration camp. During the Vietnam War, he commanded the largest artillery group in Vietnam.

Dr. John D. Biggers, Lexington, MA, a former research professor in reproductive physiology at Penn and a pioneer researcher for in vitro fertilization; April 7. He arrived at Penn from London in 1959, receiving many honors for his work. The year before that, he and his colleague Anne McClaren published a landmark paper in the journal Nature that reported the first successful development of a mammalian (mouse) early embryo and contributed to the establishment of human in vitro fertilization (IVF), which is now used as an assisted reproductive technology in tens of thousands of births annually in the United States. He later taught at Johns Hopkins University and Harvard Medical School.

Dr. David Pines, Urbana, IL, a former physics instructor at Penn and a leader in condensed matter physics; May 3. He worked at Penn in the early 1950s and later taught at Princeton and the University of Illinois. He is best known for his contributions to understanding the phenomena that emerge from the complex interactions of the elementary constituents of matter, his work paving the way for several Nobel prizes.

Philip Roth Hon’03, New York, a renowned novelist and former adjunct professor of English at Penn; May 22. After serving as a visiting lecturer, he was hired by Penn in 1970, becoming an adjunct professor in the mid-1970s. He taught at the University for more than a decade in all, with students sometimes lining up at 4:30 a.m. to register for his class. He won two National Book Awards, including one for his first novel Goodbye, Columbus (1959), two National Book Critics Circle awards, three PEN/Faulkner Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, and the Man Booker International Prize. He received an honorary degree from Penn in 2003.
