Yesterday’s Plans for Tomorrow

In November 1968, physicist and Penn President Gaylord P. Harnwell—himself the very model of the mid-century academic chief-executive (tweedy, pipe-smoking, white, male)—posed with this scale-model of the then-future campus west of 38th Street for a Gazette feature that asked the question “Whither Pennsylvania in the 1970s?”
