He was prominent in the development of Crozer-Chester Hospital into a regional medical center; he recruited many of the original physicians and developed the cardiology department, the executive-health program, and programs affiliated with Hahnemann. Also interested in infectious diseases, especially anthrax, he collaborated with the Centers for Disease Control in the development and clinical testing of the first effective vaccine; his research on tetanus provided the basis for routine immunization of U.S. troops during the Second World War and the elimination of tetanus as a complication of war wounds.

Henry J. Kauffman GEd’37, Lancaster, Pa., retired professor of metalworking at Millersville University; May 23. An authority on Pennsylvania Dutch antiques, he was a co-founder of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen and the Heritage Founders Museum of Lancaster County. Noted for his craft, he forged in copper, brass, iron, pewter, and silver: one piece, a sterling silver bowl, was exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as “an outstanding creation of the 20th century,” and is now one of two of his pieces in the permanent collection of the Yale University Art Gallery. A prolific author, he wrote Pennsylvania Dutch American Folk Art (1946)—still in print and said to be the seminal work on Pennsylvania Dutch antiques—and Early American Copper, Tin and Brass; Early American Gunsmiths, 1650-1850; The Pennsylvania-Kentucky Rifle; American Ironware, Wrought and Cast; The Colonial Silversmith; and The American Farmhouse (1975). He worked at an old mechanical typewriter in his basement until two years ago, when he was 90 years old.

Dr. Howard Kahane Gr’62, Mill Valley, Calif., former professor of philosophy at Baruch College in New York; May 2. Concerned to rid logic of the mathematical rigor it developed last century and make it readily useful, he wrote Logic and Contemporary Rhetoric: The Use of Reason in Everyday Life (1971)—in preparation for a ninth edition at the time of his death. The book popularized critical thinkingor informal logic, and led to the setting up of critical-thinking courses in the philosophy and English departments of many American colleges. As raw material he took politicians’ speeches, newspaper editorials and cartoons, advertisements, and school textbooks, analyzing them to show faulty reasoning and bias: his aim was to improve reasoning about everyday political and social issues and “raise the level of political discussion.” He never disguised his own biases, advising students to remember, when examining President Nixon’s pronouncements on the American invasion of Cambodia or the Watergate scandal, “Nixon’s record as a shady liar,” and scorning the belief that the great wealth of Vice President Nelson Rockefeller ensured his impartiality.
