Capt. John Cadwalader C’32 G’37 Gr’49,
Blue Bell, Pa., May 24, 1998. He taught English at Penn for five years
before joining the U.S. Navy in 1940. After the war he did not stay in
the classroom after gaining his doctorate, but instead returned to the
Navy. He was involved in the preparations and follow up to the International
Geophysical Year, 1957-58, but he chiefly served in postings to Antarctica
and the Arctic. His last was as commander of Project Coldfleet, a military-intelligence
mission to an abandoned Soviet scientific station in the Arctic. He retired
in 1963, but took hunting expeditions to the Yukon and British Columbia
until he was in his early eighties.

H. Robert Hanson ChE’36, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., founder and chair
of The Hanson Company, manufacturers of industrial abrasives and grinding
wheels; May 8, 1998. He was recognized for developing the approach of
seeing metal removal and abrasion as a chemical process, rather than that
of mere friction. He invented many of the particular applications and
formulae used in his factories. He had served on the boards of the American
Chemical Society and the American Ceramic Society. For more than 50 years
he and his wife volunteered for the Brightmoor Community Center in Detroit.

teacher who had served with the Philadelphia school system for more than
25 years; November 4, 1997. Her husband, Arthur Hertzfeld Ed’30 G’32,
had died on October 5, 1997.

Miles W. Kirkpatrick L’43, Wayne, Pa., retired partner and chair
of the executive committee of the Philadelphia law firm of Morgan, Lewis
& Bockius, who had also served as chair of the Federal Trade Commission,
1970-73; May 2, 1998. His appointment to the FTC came after the report
of an ABA committee on the operations of the commission he had headed:
this report concluded the FTC should undergo radical internal changes
or be abolished. During his three years there, the commission underwent
major reshaping.

Hon. Daniel J. Huyett III L’48, Reading, Pa., a federal district-court
judge for Eastern Pennsylvania from 1970 to 1995 who oversaw the evolution
of Pennsylvania’s abortion-restriction law; May 1, 1998. At one time he
himself became an issue in the controversy, when the state attorney general
asked him to disqualify himself on the grounds he was in favor of abortion
rights. Judge Huyett dismissed the petition (1993), noting that “a
fair scrutiny of my decisions throughout the history of this litigation
confirms that I have merely attempted to follow the developing Supreme
Court precedent on this issue, even at the cost of reversing my prior
holdings.”

During the Second World War, he served with Patton’s Fourth Armored Division,
and was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
He was wounded in France, but after being hospitalized in Britain, he
returned to his unit to be part of the occupying force in Germany.

J. Richard Eshleman W’51, Pittsburgh, former chair of Landmark
Savings Association; February 12. He became chair of Landmark, the second-largest
thrift in the city in 1980; by 1991 he had tripled its size by buying
up less healthy ones. However, with the tighter regulation after the increasing
failures of S&Ls, Landmark fell out of compliance and was sold to Integra
Financial Corp., where he served as executive vice president until 1993.
He spent recent years fly-fishing and auditing a broad range of courses
at the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to Landmark, he was a partner in
the local office of Arthur Young & Co., setting up its S&L audit practice.
He was also a devoted supporter of local opera and classical-music groups.

Dr. Ann Hill Beuf, Boulder, Colo., former professor of sociology and undergraduate chair who had directed the Women’s Studies Program from 1976 to 1982; May 9, 1998, after a 25-year battle with Parkinson’s disease. Joining the faculty in 1970, she was a popular teacher and won the Lindback award for outstanding teaching in 1981. She received a Fulbright scholarship, and served on a Congressional fact-finding mission to China. In 1982 she left Penn and took a teaching position at Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pa., for at least 10 years. Dr. Beuf wrote Biting Off the Bracelet: Red Children in White America and Beauty is the Beast.
