In September, Penn named J. Larry Jameson as the next dean of the School of Medicine. He will also serve as executive vice president of the University Health System. Jameson comes from Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine, where he is currently dean and vice president for medical affairs. He will begin at Penn on July 1, 2011, replacing Arthur Rubenstein [“Gazetteer,” May|June 2010].
In addition to being an experienced administrator, Jameson is a highly regarded researcher. His contributions to molecular endocrinology were recognized last year by the Endocrine Society, which bestowed its highest honor upon his work.
Penn President Amy Gutmann cited his commitment to bridging laboratory medicine and clinical practice as one of the qualities that make him well suited to assume the helm of Penn Medicine as it prepares to open the new Translational Research Center. “He is deeply committed to integrating research, education, and clinical practice through interdisciplinary collaborations and partnerships,” she said.
“Penn Medicine’s close integration of clinical, research, and educational programs represents the future of academic medicine,” Jameson said. “I look forward to partnering with Penn’s faculty, students, and staff to lead Penn Medicine’s clinical, educational, and research programs to even greater heights.”
