“Honor Veteran Teachers of College Faculty”

The photograph and headline above appeared in the May 14, 1926, issue of the Gazette. The men pictured—Dr. Edwin Schofield Crawley, professor of mathematics; Dr. Felix Emanuel Schelling, professor of English; Dr. Hugo Albert Rennert, professor of Romance languages (seated); and Dr. Edward Potts Cheyney, professor of history—had each taught at Penn for more than 40 years at the time, and “their total years of service numbered 167,” according to the accompanying story.

After describing a celebratory dinner attended by 200 Penn administrators, faculty, and alumni, the article ends by quoting a Philadelphia newspaper editorial: “May these four wise men long endure to stimulate youth and uphold the traditions of the institution they adorn.”
