1940s

Dr. Clarence E. Gingras D’43 writes that he organized a family reunion in July at the site of the 1671 land grant to their ancestor Charles Gingras. Identified by a historical marker, the property is located in St-Augustin-de-Desmaures on the outskirts of Quebec City, and extends from the St. Laurence River to the Chemin du Roy, the first road built in Canada, connecting Quebec to Montreal. The land remained in the family name for 295 years, until sold to Université Laval in 1966.

Edwin S. Jankura W’43 <[email protected]> e-mails, “It has been an exciting season, following the success of the Ivy League champion men’s soccer team. My enthusiasm has been magnified by pride in grandson Robb Jankura EAS’03, one of the captains of the 2002 team.”

Teodoro Vidal W’43, San Juan, P.R., gave a lecture last July at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History in Washington. It was part of commemorations in cities along the Eastern seaboard of the anniversary of the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. He is soon to publish his eighth book on Puerto Rican history and tradition.

Dr. E. H. Hunter Davis C’45 G’49 Gr’61, professor of English at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, in 2001 received a lifetime achievement award from the Davis and Elkins College National Alumni Soccer Council. He was described as “Founder and first coach, D and E soccer team 1961; lifelong promoter of the game; professor, friend, and philosopher of fun in life.”

Arthur M. Greenbaum C’47, a partner of the law firm of Greenbaum, Rowe, Smith, Ravin, Davis & Himmel in Woodbridge, N.J., was selected for inclusion in the 2003-04 edition of The Best Lawyers in America. An authority on real-estate brokerage and trade-association law, he has argued before the New Jersey Supreme Court in many landmark cases. For over 35 years he has also represented the New Jersey Association of Realtors. And he serves as a trustee of Monmouth Medical Center and the Monmouth Health Care Foundation.

1950s

Dr. Lionel Wyld G’50 Gr’59 writes that he attended the annual meeting of veterans from Company I, 97th Division, in Niagara Falls, Canada, last May. Accompanying him was his wife, Norma, their daughter Kimberley Wyld-Chirico and granddaughter Morgan Wyld-Chirico of Attleboro, Mass. “The meeting reviewed the history of the company’s service in World War II, which served in the Central Europe campaign until the war ended in Europe.” For his service he was awarded the Bronze Star. He “later served with the company in the occupation of Japan, the first line unit (after the 1st Cavalry Division was allowed the honor of first entry into Japan) after the surrender that ended the war.” Lionel is a director of the Navy League of the United States, Newport Council, and a director emeritus of the Canal Society of New York State.

James E. Bogle Jr. FA’52 writes that an exhibit was held at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa., in October and November of paintings, part of his collection of Asian art, from Burma, Cambodia, and Thailand, that were painted in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries.

Arthur Levy W’52 L’55 is a shareholder and chair of the municipal-law department of the law firm of Eckell, Sparks, Levy, Auerbach, Monte, Rainer & Sloane, P.C., in Media, Pa. Last September he received the Guy G. De Furia Award from the American Inns of Court Foundation Charter No. 28; named after Guy G. De Furia C’25 L’28, it is given to a lawyer “whose professional life and abilities as a trial lawyer have been in the very best traditions of our profession.” Arthur has served as president of the Delaware County Legal Assistance Association since 1993. He lives with his wife, Barbara Binder Levy Ed’55, in Wallingford; they have two children, a son, who is a business executive, and a daughter, Gayle P. Levy C’83 W’83, a partner in a New York law firm.

George W. Nordham L’52 last year self-published Parables by Jesus, a volume of lessons.

Jeanne Korns Clark Nu’53, Old Lyme, Conn., spent two weeks in May volunteering at a 330-bed orphanage outside the industrial city of Zaporozhye, Ukraine, as part of a small team of North Americans from Global Volunteers, a Minnesota-based, non-sectarian, development organization. This was her sixth stint with the non-profit, following previous adventures in Poland, Turkey, Romania, India, and Ecuador.

Sally Wendkos Olds CW’56 just published her 10th book, A Balcony in Nepal: Glimpses of a Himalayan Village. One chapter, about the library that she and a friend established in a remote hill village, appeared first as a Gazette article in July 1996. Dr. Ray Wu Gr’56, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at Cornell University, in October received the Frank Annunzio Award from the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation for his genetic-engineering work in developing new cereal crops.

Jay Shapiro C’57 G’61 writes, “I have lived in Israel since 1969. Upon retirement from industry, I became a consultant in the area of contracting with the U.S. Government in 1994. For some time I had been toying with the idea of writing a novel based upon the Allied invasion of Palestine in World War I. This is a relatively neglected area of interest for novelists, yet the results of the battles here have had far-reaching implications in world history. The murder of one of my neighbors in a terrorist attack, and the crippling of her husband and one of their daughters, prompted me to rush the book into print in order to raise funds for her family. (This explains some of the editing errors.) Sales have been quite successful.” The Colonel’s Team: A Tale of World War I, describing events in the life of Richard Meinertzhagen, was published there in 2001.

Dr. Richard P. Dakin D’59 writes that, after retiring from his dental practice, he is back at the School of Dental Medicine, teaching pre-clinical general restorative dentistry again, as he did from 1963 to 1974.

William H. Hansell Jr. W’59 WG’72 retired in October after 19 years as executive director of the International City/County Management Association, the professional association for local government managers with over 8,000 members worldwide. He has been one of the chief advocates for the importance of professional management in building strong, local democracies and effective governments throughout the world. In retirement he continues to serve as a trustee of the Financial Accounting Foundation and on the Board of the National Academy of Public Administration. Bill and his wife, Connie, live in Arlington, Va.

Steve Pollack W’60 writes that last summer he celebrated his 65th birthday at the City Athletic Club in New York. He was recently elected a member of the Financial Analyst-Money Managers Society.

E. Gerald Riesenbach W’60, Bala Cynwyd, Pa., is an attorney with Cozen O’Connor in Philadelphia who practices in its corporate and health-law departments. In November he was appointed to the board of the Freedoms Foundation in Valley Forge, which is dedicated to teaching young people from diverse backgrounds and geographic areas the responsibilities of citizens in a free society.

Dr. Robert M. Tabachnikoff C’60 writes, “I am a retired obstetrician-gynecologist and have recently moved to Hollis, N.H. I play violin and viola in two orchestras. My Dutch wife, Anneke, and I had our 40th anniversary on Oct. 19. We have four married daughters, Tanya, Elana, and Nadine, who live in New England, and Shira Tabachnikoff C’88, who lives in Amsterdam, and seven grandchildren, Pyotr, Chaya, Isaac, Stella, Caleb, Sander, and Quinten. My medical career has taken us to Sarasota, Fla., Belgium (for NATO), West Point, N.Y., Germany, and South Carolina.”

Stephen A. Cozen C’61 L’64, founder and chair of the Philadelphia-area law firm of Cozen O’Connor, in December received the annual Americanism Award from the Eastern Pennsylvania/Delaware region of the Anti-Defamation League. The award was created “to recognize leaders in business, community affairs, and charitable endeavors who distinguish themselves in their dedication to preserving liberty and advancing the causes of human rights, dignity, and equal opportunity.”

Bill Moscarelli C’62 writes, “I am vice president of real estate for National Amusements, Inc., the operator of the new Bridge Cinema Delux at 40th and Walnut Streets, near the Penn campus. It is extremely beautiful and has opened to great success. I negotiated this project for the company; we found the University administration to be excellent to deal with. I am delighted to play a part in the revitalization of the campus: the thrill for me was to come back after all these years and see the changes on the campus in general, and on Walnut Street in particular. As a junior, I lived at 3915 Walnut, where there is now a CVS store. As a senior, I lived at the corner of Pine and 40th Streets, two blocks from the new theater. My wife, Mary McBride, and I live in the North End of Boston and have six grown children—with twin grandsons in Chicago and another grandchild due this year in Providence.”

Dave Jones C’63 G’64 <[email protected]> e-mails that he and Terry Chin Jones CW’63 Gr’66 intend to be at the University for the 40th Reunion. “Having completed 30-year diplomatic careers with the U.S. Department of State, we are currently researching and writing on a variety of topics from the Clinton Administration’s Middle East peace process to advanced manufacturing productivity. Our daughters, Lisa Jones EE’91 GEE’91 and Martha Jones EAS’91, and Margaret Jones EAS’99 W’99, are rushing into the 21st century at warp speed.”

Lewis T. Barr W’64 is a partner of the Cleveland law firm of Ulmer & Berne LLP and a member of its tax, trust, and estates and business-law groups. In October he was selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America.

Barton Myers GAr’64, head of the Los Angeles-based Barton Myers Associates, Inc., and professor of architecture at UCLA [Gazette, “Looking In, Looking Out,” March/April 2000], in October received the 2002 AIA/LA Gold Medal from the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Architects, for “his outstanding body of architectural work and exemplary design standards.” His own residence in Santa Barbara, completed in 1998, earned international recognition and won a 2002 AIA award for innovation in housing design.

Beverly R. Budin CW’65, a partner in the family-wealth-management group at the Philadelphia-based law firm of Ballard, Spahr, Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP, in October participated in a panel at the fall estate-planning-practice update of the ABA and the American Law Institute. A fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, she is assistant editor of the Journal of the American College of Trust & Estate Counsel, and serves on the boards of the Estates Gifts & Trusts Journal and The Estate Tax Planning Advisor.

Richard P. Jaffe C’65 is a partner in the business & finance department and a member of the technology and emerging companies group at the Philadelphia law firm of Ballard, Spahr, Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP; in October he was elected chair of University City Science Center.

Dr. R. Barrett Noone M’65 GM’72, clinical professor of surgery in the School of Medicine, is executive director of the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He also serves as chair of surgery at Bryn Mawr Hospital and chief of plastic surgery at Main Line Health System. A pioneer of breast reconstruction at the time of mastectomy, he wrote the textbook, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the Breast. In November he was elected vice-chair of the board of trustees of Scranton University, on which he has served since 1998.

Eric R. Fischer C’67 was elected in October to the partnership of the Boston-based law firm of Goodwin Procter LLP, where he is a member of its financial-services practice. Before joining the firm in 2000, he was executive vice president, general counsel, and corporate secretary of UST Corp., a bank-holding company. He currently serves as chair of the ABA’s banking-law committee’s subcommittee on community banks. Eric is the senior faculty member in the graduate banking program of the Morin Center for Banking and Financial Law Studies at Boston University, where he has taught since 1984.

Dennis Kaffel C’67 has joined the private-client-services division of Brill Securities, Inc., in New York as a managing director.

Martin H. Redish C’67, the Louis and Harriet Ancel Professor of Law and Public Policy at Northwestern University School of Law, was recently honored by the Institute for Scientific Information for being “among the most highly cited researchers worldwide.” He also recently received the Dean’s Teaching Award at Northwestern.

Ronald L. Kahn W’68 is a partner of the Cleveland law firm of Ulmer & Berne LLP and chair of its tax-practice group and a member of the employee-benefits, business-law, tax, trust, and estates, employment- and labor-law, and health-care groups. In October he was selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America.

Dr. Janice Levin Lichtenstein CW’68 <[email protected]> graduated in December from the University of South Carolina with an Ed.D. in education. She has spent the last 34 years working as a school psychologist, consultant, and special educator in Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and South Carolina. She lives in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and will continue to work with special-needs children. She is married to Dr. Leonard S. Lichtenstein and they have three children, Melanie, Bruce (who is currently doing research at Penn), and Daniel.

Dr Frederick M. Herrmann C’69, Lawrence-ville, N.J., executive director of the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission, has compiled the fifth edition of the Campaign Financing and Lobbying Bibliography, published by the international Council on Governmental Ethics Laws. He is the longtime book-review editor of The Guardian, the council’s ethics quarterly.

Judith W. McCue CW’69 is a partner in the private-client department and resident in the Chicago office of the international law firm of McDermott, Will & Emery. In October she received the Austin Fleming Distinguished Service Award from the Chicago Estate Planning Council. She is treasurer of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, and a member of the joint editorial board for uniform trust and estate acts of the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws.

Karlyn W. Messinger CW’69 GCP’78 in September was appointed director of communications at the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She most recently headed communications, marketing, and external affairs for PhAME, a start-up technology-training and economic-development initiative. And she serves as board secretary of Horizon House.

Dr. Ellen Beth Silverman Siegel CW’69 writes, “After graduating from Penn, I moved to Boston to attend Harvard Law School, graduating in 1972. After practicing law for many years, I ‘retired’ and contemplated a new career. Ultimately, I went back to school and got a Psy.D. degree from the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology in 1998. I now see patients both privately and at Cambridge Hospital. In my spare time I have stayed involved in a poetry class I founded many years ago; along with four other classmates, I recently edited a poetry anthology in honor of our teacher entitled Do Not Give Me Things Unbroken: An Anthology of Contemporary Poetry to Honor and Celebrate Ottone M. Riccio. It is available at bookstores nationwide.” Ellen Beth is the mother of Jolie M. Siegel C’98 L’01.

Dr. Happy Craven Fernandez G’70, president of Philadelphia’s Moore College of Art and Design, was one of nine Pennsylvania women chosen in October as 2002 Distinguished Daughters for their commitment and service to the state. She had served two terms on the Philadelphia City Council, and earlier was a professor of social administration at Temple University and director of its Child Care and Family Policy Institute.

Dr. Eric J. Hill C’70 Gr’76 is the 2002 recipient of the Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects, Detroit chapter.

Bruce M. Sattin C’70 in September joined the law firm of Szaferman, Lakind, Blumstein, Blader, Lehmann & Goldshore, P.C., in Lawrenceville, N.J.; serving as of counsel, he specializes in real estate and zoning law. Previously he was a partner in the Bordentown law firm of Kessler, Tutek, Gladfelter, Sattin & Gallagher. Bruce is solicitor for the Lumberton Township Planning Board and the Eastampton Township Land Use Planning Board. And he serves as counsel to Doorway to Hope, and on the board of Abrams Hebrew Academy.

Dr. Mitch Smith C’70, a rabbi and certified sport-psychology consultant, has served as a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee’s Sport Psychology Registry, and spoken on “Sport as Competition, Sport as Transformation: Jewish Views” at Notre Dame University’s Conference on Sport, Character and Culture. He is the publisher of The Jewish Sports Connection, a periodical promoting discussion of sport and Jewish life <[email protected]>. David W. Sweet C’70 in October was elected vice-chair of the executive committee of the Philadelphia-based law firm of Pepper Hamilton LLP; a senior government-relations and finance partner and chair of its public-finance practice group, he is based in its Harrisburg office. He was recently campaign manager for Ed Rendell C’65 Hon’00 in his successful campaign for governor of Pennsylvania. David has served as a trustee of the University since 1994 and an overseer of the School of Nursing since 1997.

Barry M Abelson L’71 is chair of the executive committee of the Philadelphia-based law firm of Pepper Hamilton LLP; a partner in the firm’s commercial department, he also chairs its corporate and securities-practice group. In October he was elected to the board of the Children’s Crisis Treatment Center, a private, non-profit agency providing mental-health counseling and family services to children who were victims of, or witnesses to, extreme violence, abuse, neglect, or trauma (www.cctckids.org).

Dr. Roberta Toll SW’71, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., a clinical psychologist who maintains a private practice in Bingham Farms, presented “Dying to be Perfect, Learning to be Human,” at a conference on feminist perspectives on body image, trauma, and healing at Philadelphia’s Renfrew Center in early November. She is married to Sheldon Toll C’62, a partner of the law firm of Honigman, Miller, Schwartz & Cohn LLP in Detroit.

Nancy Plain Goldfeder CW’72 recently received a Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People 2002 Award from the Children’s Book Council for her fifth book, Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, and the French Revolution, which is published by the Marshall Cavendish Corporation. Having just finished editing a book of memoirs by Elizabeth Custer, wife of General George Custer, she is writing a history of Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Michael Lipkin C’72 writes that, after receiving a master’s in architecture from Yale in 1980, he has practiced in Aspen, Colo., for the past 20 years (www.lipkinwarner.com). Currently he is developing a new town 20 miles from Aspen (www.willitscolorado.com). He is married to the painter, Jody Guralnick, and they have two children, Spike (14) and Georgia (10).

Ron Malzer C’72 <[email protected]> successfully completed two triathlons in September. He is even prouder that his children, Greg and Elise, both teenagers now, are doing extremely well.

Dr. Harold Alan Pincus C’72, professor and executive vice-chair of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, is senior scientist and director of the RAND-University of Pittsburgh Health Institute. He recently received the Mumford Award and Medal from Columbia University for outstanding contributions in the field of health-services research. He also reports that his son Zachary “just graduated from Princeton and is interning at the Manhattan Theater Club, a non-profit production company both on- and off-Broadway. Nathaniel, a sophomore at Yale, is editing the Rumpus (‘the nation’s oldest college tabloid’) having spent the summer interning for Conan O’Brien. Ezra, a junior at Winchester-Thurston School, spent the summer at Carnegie Mellon University learning theater and lighting design.” Harold and his wife, Ellyn Roth CW’74, an attorney, note they are mystified and delighted by the interests of their kids.

Dr. Andy Agee Gurand GrE’73 (formerly Azmi Güran) e-mails, “Since the death of my wife, after 30 years of marriage, I live retired (at 72) in Switzerland within the American community in Zurich, participating in the American Club of Zurich. Capt. Timothy A. Brown WG’74 is serving his fourth term as international president of the International Organization of Masters, Mates, and Pilots. In November he received the Admiral of the Ocean Seas Award, the most prestigious award for the American shipping industry, from the United Seaman’s Service. This was for his significant contributions to American shipping and seafarers, notably his part in achieving the Maritime Security Act of 1996, his work with other maritime unions to put in place a new maritime-security program, his work towards developing a U.S.-flag, U.S.-crewed cruise industry, and his achieving tax equity for American mariners working in international trade.

Joanna Carnegie Ellis CW’74 <jellis@maxx connect.net> e-mails, “I moved to beautiful, historic Savannah, Ga., in April. My new role is director of faculty recruiting at the Savannah College of Art and Design, which exists to prepare talented students for careers in the visual and performing arts, design, the building arts, and the history of art and architecture.”

Susan E. Menconi CW’74 <[email protected]> went into partnership in 2001 with Andrew L. Schoelkopf, formerly head of American paintings at Christie’s, New York, and formed Menconi & Schoelkopf Fine Art, LLC, on East 69th Street in Manhattan; the private gallery specializes in American art of the 19th and first half of the 20th-centuries. She was the founding director of the American-sculpture department at Hirschl & Adler Galleries from 1977 to 1993, then executive vice president of the Richard York Gallery till 2001.

Cecelia L. Fanelli CW’75 in October joined the New York law firm of Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP as partner. Previously she was a partner in the hotel and hospitality group of the law firm KMZ Rosenman.

Allan Kanner C’75, a principal of the New Orleans law firm of Allan Kanner & Associates, was recently appointed visiting professor of law at Yale Law School. A graduate of Harvard Law School, he has 22 years of litigation experience, and he wrote the textbook, Environmental and Toxic Tort Trials.

Stephen Tsou C’75 GAr’77 and Dr. H. Jiuan Heng announce the birth of their first son, Adam, on Oct. 26 in Singapore. Stephen is senior director of M. Moser Associates, an interior design, project-management, and construction company, and Jiuan is an assistant professor of philosophy at the National University of Singapore.

Jorge Wegbrait C’75 Ch’75 <[email protected]> was recently appointed compound-development manager at Belden Corp., in Richmond, Ind., a maker of wire and fiber-optic products used in the electrical and electronics markets.

Dr. Nelson Erlick C’76 writes that his debut medical thriller, GermLine, was recently published in hardback by Forge Books. Dr. Elaine Kuracina D’76 e-mails, “I’m practicing general dentistry in Potsdam, N.Y., where I have been invited to lecture on TMD for the Clarkson Physical Therapy School. Dr. Michael Miller Gr’76, professor of history at Syracuse University, recently joined the editorial board of the International Journal of Maritime History. He specializes in modern France and Europe, the history of business, and maritime history. His last book was Shanghai on the Metro: Spies, Intrigue and the French Between the Wars (1994).

Dr. Edwin S. Rosenberg GD’77 D’81 was last year re-appointed director of postdoctoral periodontics and implant dentistry at the School of Dental Medicine. Previously he held a research appointment as professor of implant dentistry at New York University, and was a clinical professor of periodontics at the University of Southern California. He had earlier served on the Penn Dental School’s faculty and was the first director of Penn’s implant center; for over 10 years as he was director of the postdoctoral periodontics program.

Dr. Gary J. Stilwell W’77 WG’84 is a postgraduate student in the School of Architecture at the University of Edinburgh.

Lynn Schoenfeld Abrahamson Nu’78 writes that this month she assumed a two-year term as president of the Connecticut Public Health Association; she recently worked for the Central Area Health Education Centers in Hartford. She lives in South Windsor, Conn., with her husband, Dr. Daniel Abrahamson, and her two sons, Garrett and Keith.

Gerald A. McHugh L’79 is a shareholder with the Philadelphia law firm of Litvin, Blumberg, Matusow & Young. President of the Philadelphia Bar, he co-wrote the two-volume Pennsylvania Torts: Law and Advocacy. He was selected for inclusion in the upcoming edition of The Best Lawyers in America. And in November he received the annual Justice Michael A. Musmanno Award from the Philadelphia Trial Lawyers Association, awarded “to an outstanding litigator, peerless leader, and dedicated defender of the rights of the innocent and injured.” Gerald and his wife, Maureen Tate, have been married 25 years; they have four children, Laura, Amy, Colleen, and Michael.

Cdr. John C. Mickey ChE’79 assumed command last August of the U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, R.I. Dr. John R. Van Ness Gr’79 was named vice president for administration of the Chemical Heritage Foundation in Philadelphia, where he has served as vice president for program development since 2000. Previously he was associate vice president for development at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. A scholar of Hispanic history and culture in the American Southwest, he has written four books and is the editor of a series published by the University of New Mexico Press on the history, anthropology, and sociology of Hispanic culture in New Mexico.

Dr. Richard Wender M’79 was recently appointed chair of family medicine at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University and the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital; he had served as vice-chair since 1995. Known for his work in cancer prevention and screening, he is chair of the national cancer-control committee of the American Cancer Society, and he was a co-author of the ACS screening guidelines for both colon cancer and prostate cancer. A former president of the society’s state and local chapters, since 1999 he has been a member of its national board, the only practicing family physician to have served in this role.

Rob Dunham C’80 is director of training in the capital habeas corpus unit of the Federal Public Defender’s Office in Philadelphia. On Nov. 4, he argued Sattazahn v. Pennsylvania in the U.S. Supreme Court, the first Pennsylvania death-penalty case the court agreed to hear since 1988.

Dr. David Guggenheim C’80, vice president for conservation policy with The Ocean Conservancy in Washington (www.oceanconservancy.org), in late October conducted a workshop for Philadelphia high-school students and scuba-club members on “The America No One Ever Told You About: Lessons from our Youngest Frontier.” He recently appeared on CNN and National Geographic Today.

Dr. Mary Botter GNu’84 GrN’98 in November became chief nursing officer and senior vice president of patient-care services at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt., where she had been administrative director of nursing operations. Joining the University of Vermont in 1993 as an assistant professor of nursing, she served as interim associate dean of nursing from 1997 to 2000.

Lt.Col. Roland de Marcellus C’84 and his wife, Molly Curtin de Marcellus, are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter, Kathleen Rose, on Sept. 1. They married in Washington on Dec. 9, 2001, one month before Roland was mobilized in the U.S. Army Reserves and deployed to Afghanistan for nine months. There he commanded the 489th Civil Affairs Battalion, which is implementing humanitarian reconstruction projects. After a year on active duty, he returned to his position with the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs.

Marc P. Fisher GAr’85 in December became the associate vice-chancellor for campus design and facilities at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He had served as campus architect and director of design at UCLA for the last seven years. While it was not the cakewalk I expected, I still managed to complete the 2.4-mile ocean swim, 112-mile bike, and 26.2-mile run (and walk) course with three hours to spare in 13:53:04. And, as if finishing such a race was not cause enough for celebration, I upped the ante even more: trotting down the finishing chute, I held aloft a sign printed with the plea Marry me, Staci! To which I received an emphatic Yes, Yes, Yes!, a gasp from my intended, Staci Feldman, as I handed her the ring from my pinky, and a tender ‘Ugh! Dr Lynn G. Kirby Gr’97 in September was named a research assistant professor of pediatrics at the School of Medicine. She is also an assistant member of the Joseph Stokes Jr. Research Institute at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where she had served as a research scientist in its gastroenterology and nutrition division. Her research focuses on the effects of stress on the brain’s serotonin system and the neurobiological aspect of stress-related psychiatric disorders such as anxiety and depression.

Elizabeth Dartt Preate L’97, a corporate and securities associate with the Philadelphia law firm of Pepper Hamilton LLP, in October was elected to the board of the Justinian Society, an educational, non-profit organization of lawyers whose ancestry is Italian. Dr. Samuel C. K. Lee GM’00 is a research associate at Shriners Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, working on functional electrical stimulation applied to children with spinal-cord injuries and cerebral palsy. He recently received the Chattanooga Research Award from the American Physical Therapy Association for co-authoring an article in its scientific journal Physical Therapy, on “Maximum Voluntary Activation in Nonfatigued and Fatigued Muscle of Young and Elderly Individuals.”

Carrie Rothfeld GAr’02, last October joined the historic-preservation practice group of Hillier, the national architecture, design, and planning firm. Based in its Philadelphia office, she is working on the restoration, renovation, and expansion of the Farm Show buildings in Harrisburg, the country’s largest, indoor animal-exhibition facility.
