J. Arch Anderson W’24 celebrated his 100th birthday in Gainesville, Fla., in late June. A niece described him as “remarkably agile and aware of all that was going on around him.”

1930s

Jean S. Ginsburg Ed’32 writes, “I have resided at Martins Run Retirement Community for almost three years, and keep very active in its many programs and committees. I am looking forward to my 92nd birthday in December. My husband, Frank I. Ginsburg L’33,died June 27, 2000. I have a son, a daughter, five grandchildren, one great-grandson, and one on the way.”

Vera Prock Ransom CW’35 wrote in May, “I was a member of the Class of 1935. A long time ago. And now, believe it or not, I will celebrate my 90th birthday on June 10. Imagine!”

Belle Biberman Parmet CW’38 writes, “I have had a very active professional life as a psychiatric social worker and family therapist in Princeton, N.J., and for the last 15 years as a volunteer for the International Professional Exchange, the Friends of the Free Library of Philadelphia, and the Patient and Family Information Center at HUP: in April I was honored as the Volunteer of the Year at HUP. The University is a much better institution now, especially for women, than when I was an unhappy student, 1934-38.”

1940s

Dr. Martin M. Kaplan V’40 CCC’41 PH’42 writes that he is director of the Pugwash office in Geneva. He has been married since 1959 to Lenna Kaplan, and they have two sons, Peter and Jeffrey, both doctors in the U.S.; their daughter, Alexa, and two grandchildren, Emma and Alex, live in France.

Rabbi Jacob Pressman C’40 <[email protected]> e-mails, “Life has been busy and exciting in recent months for me and my wife, Marjorie Steinberg Pressman CW’42. We celebrated our 60th wedding anniversary at a Sabbath service at Temple Beth Am, a Los Angeles congregation I served from 1950 (the last 16 years as emeritus). It was 60 years to the day that we were married at Temple Beth Am in Philadelphia. There were some 400 people attending, including our three children, Rabbi Daniel from San Jose; Joel, a teacher who heads performing arts at Beverly Hills High School and is a part-time cantor; and daughter Judy, who has lived in Israel many years—as well as four of our five grandchildren, all of whom are brilliant, of course. I have just published two books: Dear Friends: A Prophetic Journey of Great Events of the 20th Century, which features major sermons about world-shaking events. The other is a paperback, The Wild and Crazy World as Seen From Beverly Hills by Rabbi Jack, a compilation of columns which I write each week in a local paper, The Beverly Hills Courier—and fans say they are witty (www.thebeverlyhillscourier.com). Marjorie, whose area of expertise is public relations, is helping to promote the publications. She was recently honored (at a sold-out luncheon) as a Woman of Achievement by Friends of Sheba Medical Center, which is the largest and most comprehensive hospital in Israel and the entire Middle East. Charles Rosenberg C’41 writes, “The weekend of May 31-June 3 was occasion for seven of the eight surviving members of the Penn graduating class of Phi Epsilon Pi, Class of 1941, including wives and girlfriends (AAPEC’41), to get together for a ‘Big Easy bash’ in New Orleans. Stanley Fried C’41 and his lovely wife, Pam, hosted the affair.” Charles was there with his bride, Mary. “Attending were Lois and Marvin L. Facher W’41, Sue Westwater and Mitchell W. Miller C’41 L’48, Suzanne and Ralph J. Roberts W’41, Jocelyn and William B. Rudner C’41, and Jane and Stanley M. Silverstein W’41. Rita and Richard L. Lowenstein W’41 were scheduled to attend, but Dick injured himself trying to get out of a sand trap, and had to abort. It was a memorable event.”

Emanuel B. Shapiro C’41, Holmarna, Sweden, reports that he has been “writing poetry since 1980, published in British, Swedish, and U.S. journals. I completed a course at the University of Massachusetts in 1993 on Law and Conscience: it was tremendously interesting and revealing. My wife is Swedish and is a ceramist and an art historian. My son, John R. Shapiro, is a city planner who teaches part time at Penn.”

Dr. Leonard Apt C’42 is emeritus professor of ophthalmology and emeritus head of pediatric ophthalmology at UCLA’s Jules Stein Eye Institute; he was the first physician in this country to be board-certified in both pediatrics and ophthalmology, and in 1961, inaugurated at UCLA the country’s first full-time service in pediatric ophthalmology at a medical school. The third annual Leonard Apt Lecture, sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics, was held at the spring meeting of the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.

Jack Lawler EE’43 writes that he is “working diligently with the Class of 1943 executive committee to make the 60th Reunion in 2003 one of the best.” He is editor of the class newsletter.

John F. Pile FA’46 received the 2001 Joel Polski Prize from the American Society of Interior Designers for his book, A History of Interior Design, which was published in 2000 by Calmann and King in London and John Wiley & Sons in New York.

1950s

Morris J. Dean C’51, a partner with the Philadelphia law firm of Blank, Rome, Comisky & McCauley LLP who specializes in real estate law, was appointed in July to the board of the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency. He is vice-chair of the Montgomery County Community Revitalization Board. And he also serves as standing counsel to the Pennsylvania pension-fund systems.

A. David Leinwand W’53 “graduated in May from New York University with a Master of Arts degree specializing in American history. After owning Rosetta Electric Company in Manhattan for over 40 years, he retired and decided to pursue a long-standing interest in history. Way to go, Dad!” e-mail his daughters, Laurie Leinwand Gildan W’82 and Janet Leinwand Bein C’89.

Hon. Stephen Levin W’53 L’58 and Myrna Stern Levin Ed’59 had their first grandchildren, the twins, Roxanne Evelyn and Jordan Hope, born on April 9 to their mother Dr. Jennifer Levin Popovsky C’91and her husband, Ricardo. Jennifer is associate director of dermatologic surgery for University Dermatologists of Cleveland.

Masaru Masaki WG’53 writes, “I returned home from Philadelphia to Tokyo in the summer of 1953 at the age of 38. In 1958, as an employee of the oldest and largest non-life insurance company in Japan, I was asked to establish a financial-protection system for the nuclear-electrical utilities, which involved legislation for compulsory liability insurance. I retired from the nuclear-insurance system in 1984, at the age of 70; that nuclear-insurance pool is still working. Dr. Gaylord P. Harnwell Hon’53 and Dr. Solomon S. Huebner Gr’05 Hon’31 were acquainted with this Ike project in the 1950s.”

Leon Henry W’54, CEO and chair of Leon Henry Inc., an alternative print-media management and brokerage firm in Scarsdale, N.Y., was named a finalist for the 2002 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award; his company is celebrating its 46th year in business.

Dr. Theodore H. Rupp Gr’54 was recently honored as Man of the Year by the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association for his leadership in a campaign that raised a million dollars to endow wrestling at Franklin & Marshall College.

Irah Sabet W’54 writes, “I am living in Switzerland and managing Stella Co. at Club Med; I have two sons, one daughter, and two grandchildren, who live in the U.S. Two years ago my wife, Rose Mary, and I established a conference center in Albania to host Baha’i activities and non-governmental organizations; we go there two or three times a year. It is a wonderful country with a great future.”

Dr. Gerald M. Berkowitz C’55 was selcected for inclusion in Top Illinois Doctors, published last year by Castle Connely. His son is Dr. Lyle Berkowitz EAS’88.

Morton Handel C’56 is chair of the board of Marvel Enterprises, Inc. (Spiderman), and a director of Linens ’n Things and Concurrent Computer Corp. In May he was honored by the University of Hartford with an honorary Doctorate of Humanities degree. A regent of that university for 11 years, he has served as vice-chair of the board of regents and vice-chair of the trustees of the Hartt School. He and his wife, Irma, celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary in August.

P. Gerald White W’56 in March received the Window of Opportunity Award from Sojourners’ Place, a shelter in Wilmington, Del., dedicated to assisting homeless men and women to self-sufficiency through a case-managed, residential program. He writes, “I continue to be associated with Cushman & Wakefield, Inc., the world’s preeminent real-estate services firm, as its senior director for Delaware. Edward H. Rosenthal C’57, Kew Gardens, N.Y., a personal-injury trial attorney, earlier this year was elected president of the Queens County Bar Association. Trying cases for both plaintiffs and defendants, he is an arbitrator and mediator for the American Arbitration Association and several private alternative-dispute-resolution firms. He serves on the executive board of the trial-lawyers and the torts insurance and compensation sections of the New York State Bar Association, and lectures at St. John’s University Law School. Edward was instrumental in organizing the Bar’s 9/11 Trial Lawyers Care pro-bono program for victims and relatives of victims before the Federal compensation board. He and his wife, Linda, who is a senior director of Mary Kay Cosmetics, have five grown children and 10 grandchildren.

Dr. Richard O. Lundquist W’58, professor emeritus of international and private enterprise at SUNY at Fredonia, is serving as president of the board of the Fulbright Association till the end of the year.

Dr. Donald S. Mayes D’58 is principal of a dental-benefits consulting firm in Hershey Pa. He wrote Dental Benefits: A Guide to Dental PPOs, HMOs and Other Managed Plans, published earlier this year by the International Foundation, Milwaukee.

Dr. Clyde F. Barker GM’59 is the Donald Guthrie Professor of Surgery and a former chair of surgery and chief of transplant surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. In June he was elected president of the United Network for Organ Sharing, which manages the national Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network under federal contract. Previously he was vice president and chair of its membership and professional-standards committee.

Charles Klatskin W’59, chair of Charles Klatskin Company, Inc., has created an alliance with Binswanger of Philadelphia to be known as Binswanger/Klatskin; they will do commercial brokerage in the northern New Jersey market. Binswanger has been in the commercial-brokerage business for 75 years and Charles Klatskin has been in the industrial commercial-brokerage business since 1959; he will continue as CEO for the new alliance based in Teterboro, with a branch office in Edison.

Jean S. Price SW’59 writes from Florida, “My volunteer focus since retirement is on senior issues, which I consider as a primary concern due to the large numbers of seniors who will be living in the U.S. in the next several decades. I have served two terms as chair of the Jacksonville-Duval County Council on Elder Affairs, a volunteer organization reporting directly to the mayor and city council that advocates and supports programs and policies that maximize the opportunities for county seniors to live independently in the community, enjoying a good quality of life. The council was an enabling factor in an increase in the homestead exemption for lower-income homeowners; it also led the way for a complete overhaul, and the continuing monitoring, of the county’s public-transportation services for the disadvantaged. The council is also actively involved with the North East Florida United Way, providing funds for neighborhood programs, projects, and activities involving senior citizens. The grant-awarding process is an excellent way to learn about intergovernmental relationships and concerns in the community.”

1960s

Dr. Newell Fischer M’61 in May was elected president and his wife, Dr. Ruth Simons Fischer CW’58, was elected councilor-at-large, of the American Psychoanalytic Association; with 3500 members, the association is the largest national psychoanalytic group in the world. Drs. Newell and Fischer are in the private practice of psychiatry and psychoanalysis in Bryn Mawr, Pa.

Dr. Donald A. Krueckeberg GCP’62 Gr’66, New Brunswick, N.J., was last year appointed associate dean for the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University, having served as graduate director, department chair, and director of the School of Urban and Regional Planning there. Inducted last year into the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners, the professional institute of the American Planning Association, he was elected its Region-I commissioner earlier this year. He wrote Urban Planning Analysis: Methods and Models, and is a past editor of the Journal of the American Planning Association.

Bonnie Stein Squires CW’62 G’65 served as a judge and presenter for the PhilaFilm Silver Anniversary Festival, Philadelphia’s oldest international film festival. She is also vice-chair of the city’s Jewish Film Festival.

Dr. H. Michael Zal C’62, a psychiatrist in Bala Cynwyd, Pa., gave a presentation based on his book, The Sandwich Generation: Caught Between Growing Children and Aging Parents, at Brandywine Assisted Living at Haverford Estates.

Alice C. King CW’63, Hong Kong, writes that “Alisan Fine Arts—Alice King Gallery is now into its 21st year, having opened in April 1981. It is a pioneer in promoting contemporary Chinese painting.”

Kay J. Ferguson Maxwell CW’63, Greenwich, Conn., was elected unanimously to a two-year term as national president of the League of Women Voters. A member since 1976, Kay served as president of the Connecticut League from 1989 to 1993; she was elected first vice president of the national board in 1998, serving as budget-committee chair and was a Lobby Corps member on Capitol Hill. A vice president of the International Executive Service Corps, an international economic development non-profit, Kay urged the delegate members at the June national convention to “think beyond our own borders and help involve the league in developing democracies.” Kay also serves on the boards of the Women’s Campaign School at Yale University, the Connecticut Public Affairs Network, and the Planned Parenthood of Connecticut Public Policy Fund.

Idaherma Williams GFA’63, a painter and printmaker in Princeton, N.J., exhibited in the spring members’ show of the Printmakers Council of New Jersey; in the 113th annual exhibition of the National Association of Women Artists, May-June; and the Ellarslie Open XX at the Museum of the City of Trenton in June.

Ann Barsky Curiel CW’64 writes from Florence, “I became a grandmother on Dec. 3; my grandson, Daniele Fiorenza, lives in Naples. He visited the States for the first time in June.”

Beverly R. Budin CW’65, a partner in the family wealth-management group of the Philadelphia law firm of Ballard, Spahr, Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP, spoke on “Analyzing Qualified Tuition Programs,” at the 26th Annual American Institute on Federal Taxation in June.

Margot Marx Carrey CW’65 e-mails, “Bonjour to all my Penn friends. I have been living in France for almost 18 years, and have been sending au-pair girls to satisfied American families for almost as many years. My three grown kids, Scott, Doug, and Dana, as well as my two grandchildren, Daren and Emma, now live in Southern California. In November 2000 I adopted Eve Sophie, who was born in Romania; she will be 11 on Christmas. She speaks both French and English. We live 45 minutes from the Atlantic, with our Pekingese show dog, Snickers. I would enjoy hearing from old friends <[email protected]> and anyone who has adopted an older child from Romania.”

Elli Streit WG’65 writes, “I am involved in a technology-transfer company called Primode, which is based in London; I shuttle between the U.K. and Israel. My son and daughter-in-law live in Lawrenceville, N.J., and I have three grandchildren with my daughter, who also lives in Israel.”

Mark G. Yudof C’65 L’68, president of the University of Minnesota since 1997, in June was named chancellor of the University of Texas System. He had served as executive vice president and provost at UT Austin from 1994 to 1997, and earlier as dean of its law school for 10 years.

Dr. Glen Brubaker M’66 works for Interchurch Medical Assistance, a non-governmental organization that provides medical products and services for emergency, health, and development programs overseas. A Mennonite medical missionary in Tanzania for nearly 30 years, he was based at Shirati Hospital near Lake Victoria.

Rachel E. Lilley CW’66 writes she retired on July 3 after 36 years as a civilian employee with the U.S. Army. She began her career in government contracting at the Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia, and served in various positions in this country and Germany. For the last 17 years, she was a senior procurement analyst on the staff of the assistant secretary of the Army (acquisition, logistics, & technology) in Washington.

Dr. Jonathan C. Cons C’67 is past state president of the American Society for Dentistry for Children, past state president of the Academy of General Dentistry, and current president of the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Nashoba Valley. In July he was inducted as a master in the Academy of General Dentistry. He and his wife, Judy, celebrated their 33rd anniversary earlier this year. Jon practices in Porter, a small town in southwestern Maine, where he and Judy live with 10 dogs (at last count).

Fredric H. Karr C’67 writes that since August 2001, he has been book critic for the Broward News, a weekly publication; for some time he has also served as the book critic for the Broward Senior News and the Palm-Aire News & Views, two South Florida monthlies. He notes that he is now responsible for over 65 book reviews yearly.

Dr. Thomas D. Cherubini GM’68 recently published his first novel, Up In Smoke, written under the pen-name, Tom Deecy. He reports, “The book is enjoying good sales at Barnes and Noble’s online bookstore and iUniverse.com. A second novel is in final preparation and will be published later this year or early next.”

Prof. Fred S. Kleiner C’68, professor of art history and archaeology at Boston University, received a Metcalf Award for Teaching Excellence at their Commencement in May. He is principal author of recent editions of Gardner’s Art Through the Ages and is the longtime editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Archaeology. He has been on the Boston faculty since 1978.

Dr. Stephen Bosniak C’69 was named one of the top beauty doctors in New York by New York magazine in its May 27 issue.

Dennis Cohen C’69 L’72 <[email protected]> and his wife, Faith, are delighted to announce the marriage of their daughter, Samantha Joy Cohen W’98, to Jason Greenberg of San Francisco, on July 6. Samantha is attending Stanford Business School, after stints at Goldman Sachs and Francisco Partners.

Charles S. Fiedler W’69, formerly a partner with the Los Angeles law firm of Klein & Martin LLP, became a partner in the Los Angeles office of Shaw Pittman LLP following the two firms’ merger in July. His practice involves corporate, securities, and health-care law.

Peiser C’69 <[email protected]> e-mails, “I recently was appointed president and CEO of Imperial Sugar Company, a $1.5-billion, Houston-based refiner and marketer of sugar products to retail and industrial accounts and a packager and marketer of sugar products, sauces, seasonings, desserts, and drink mixes in the food-service marketplace. This marks the ninth turnaround assignment in my career, including six where I have been CEO.”

Ingrid Philipp CW’69 e-mails, “The last year has been wonderful for me: I was gifted with a grandson by my son, Sebastian Cook, developed an online creative-writing course for Seneca College (entitled The Zen of Writing) and have been granted a sabbatical year, starting this month. I’ll be away from my Toronto home, translating a diary that my father kept as a 15-year-old fleeing the Holocaust; I hope to retrace his journey myself, visiting Berlin and Prague in particular. I’d love to contact any alumni based in Europe. Most of the time, however, I will be in New Jersey, working with my mother to translate the diary and fill in the blanks. 1970s

Timothy J. Carson W’70, a partner in the Philadelphia office of the law firm of Saul Ewing LLP, in May was installed as the 108th president of the Pennsylvania Bar Association.

P. Adolfo Castilla Garrido GEE’70 WG’75 is president of Flag Telecom Espana S.A. in Madrid.

John S. Herbert C’70 in June joined Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP as a partner; he practices in its M&A and private-equity groups in New York. Previously he was head of Shearman & Sterling’s private-equity practice.

William C. G. Swift Jr. W’70<[email protected]> has been appointed joint managing director of Withers Bergman LLP, an international law firm dedicated to the business and personal interests of the high-net-worth people. It was launched in January from the trans-Atlantic merger of the 106-year-old London-based law firm Withers and 40-year-old Bergman, Horowitz & Reynolds of New York and New Haven, Conn. Bill leads the U.S. practice and advises high-net-worth clients on tax issues, trusts, estates planning, and business matters.

Steve Gayle C’71, executive director of the Binghamton (N.Y.) Metropolitan Transportation Study, was recently appointed to the board of the national Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations. He also serves on the executive committee of the Institute of Transportation Engineers.

Tim Alston W’72 has retired from Ernst & Young and moved to Aldeburgh, in Suffolk, “which is famous in the music world for its Aldeburgh Festival, but is also a coastal resort town.” He is “involved in six charities, one of which is a City of London charity devoted to stained glass and glaziers; it has rescued nine large windows from a redundant church in England and donated them to a church in Maryland.”

Dr. Robert A. Bartolini GrE’72, West Windsor, N.J., is corporate vice president in charge of the semiconductor and electronics unit and of international operations for the Princeton-based technology-development firm Sarnoff Corporation. In June he received the 2002 J. Stanley Morehouse Memorial Award for leadership in the engineering profession from the Villanova University Engineering Alumni Society. His work in recordable optical disks and related fields in opto-electronics and semiconductors has earned him 22 U.S. patents.

Carol Henry Dunn CW’72, a chemistry teacher at Wallenpaupack High School in Hawley, Pa., received the 2002 Outstanding High School Teacher Award from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, a private engineering and science college in Terre Haute, Ind.

Nancy Plain Goldfeder CW’72 has written a biography of the Western artist Frederic Remington, to be published by Enslow Publishers in January. She has written books on the artists Mary Cassatt and George Catlin, as well as editing the memoirs of Elizabeth Custer, wife of General George Armstrong Custer. Her most recent book, Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, and the French Revolution, was recognized by the Children’s Book Council as a “Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People 2002.”

Ellen M. Kirsh G’72 co-founded infosnap, Inc., in 2000; based in Bethesda, Md., it is a provider of online application and fundraising services for independent schools and community organizations. In May she received the 2002 Arthur Armitage Distinguished Alumni Award from the Rutgers University School of Law at Camden. She is a former vice president, general counsel, and secretary of America Online, Inc. Ellen lives in Potomac with her husband, Anthony Clifford, and their children, Alexander (23), Elizabeth (19), and Victoria (14).

Dr. Joe Williams C’72 <[email protected]> e-mails, “I have received an M.A. in English literature from Rutgers University; my thesis, Neither/Both, a volume of poetry, was accepted with honors. This is absolutely the last degree I intend to pursue during this lifetime. I know I said that before, but this time I mean it.”

Charles E. Dorkey III L’73 has been appointed to the board of Historic Hudson Valley, “a not-for-profit educational organization that owns, restores, preserves, and promotes historic landmarks of national significance in the Hudson Valley.”

Elissa Gore CW’73 GFA’74 <[email protected]> e-mails, “I continue to paint landscape in northern Manhattan and on location. In the summer I was a resident artist at art colonies in Woodstock, N.Y., Glen Arbor, Mich., and Santa Fe, N.M. In May I exhibited paintings made in Virginia and Maine at the Allen Sheppard Gallery in New York. This year I am also teaching weekend workshops in plein air painting at the New York Botanical Garden and the Rhode Island School of Design.”

Janet Millenson CW’73 <[email protected]> has been elected vice president of the Maryland Ornithological Society.

Robert Pearman W’74 <[email protected]> e-mails, “I established the Pearman Family Scholarship Fund last year, to honor and perpetuate the generations before me who valued higher education and athletics, by providing scholarships to graduating African-American high-school seniors from San Diego County. Students must have a 3.0 grade-point average, demonstrated financial need, and be attending a four-year university. The first recipient is Jessica Hunt, who will attend San Diego State University; she is interested in becoming a pediatrician and establishing a clinic in San Diego County for low-income children and their families. Prof. John Quelch WG’74, senior associate dean at the Harvard Business School, has been appointed as the non-executive chair of the Massachusetts Port Authority.

Elizabeth Rech CW’74 GEd’74 recently formed her own consulting practice, Elizabeth Rech Consulting, which specializes in customer-relationship-management techniques for companies to implement profitable, customer-focused strategies (www.rechonline.com). She was previously associated with the Peppers and Rogers Group.

Winthrop H. Smith Jr. WG’74, chair of Merrill Lynch International and former executive vice-president of Merrill Lynch & Co., in June joined the board of AGF Management Ltd., a Toronto investment-management company. Win is vice-president of the board of trustees of Deerfield Academy. He is a director of the Economic Club of New York, the Japan Society and the Americas Society. And he is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Kathleen Reilly Bell Nu’75 is an associate professor of rehabilitation medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle. “I am delighted to announce I just finished my first marathon, one week ago [in early June]. My oldest son, Daniel, is graduating from high school; my other sons are Nathan (15) and Michael (11). My husband, Larry, practices anesthesia in Everett.”

Robert E. Heideck C’75, the partner in charge of the Philadelphia office of Pepper Hamilton LLP, was elected executive partner of the law firm, effective January next year. With the firm for some 22 years, he has been a member of its executive committee since 1995 and a member of the finance committee since 1992.

Dr. Jeffrey W. Hutter D’75, chair of endodontics at the Boston University School of Dental Medicine, in July was appointed associate dean for academic affairs there. He is the immediate past president of the American Association of Endodontists. A retired captain in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps, he and his wife, Kathy, have two grown children and live in Newton, Mass.

As such, I oversee the implementation of four child-abuse and neglect-prevention programs that are delivered throughout the state. Additionally I serve as a consultant to the New Jersey Juvenile Justice Commission, the Rutgers University Network for Family Life Education, and the child-support program of the New Jersey Department of Human Services; other affiliations include membership of the board of the Princeton Hitops and the Princeton Human Services Commission. Volunteer activities include the Princeton YWCA, the Junior League of Greater Princeton, and the Mercer County Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Dr. Justin O. Schechter C’77, assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine and in private practice in Stamford, Conn., was selected by New York magazine in its June 10 issue as one of the best doctors in New York. He specializes in forensic psychiatry as well as in the treatment of mood disorders, and anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorders. He also serves as chair of the Stamford Health System medical-ethics committee.

Dr. Rita B. Effros Gr’78, a professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UCLA, was appointed in March to the Elizabeth and Thomas Plott Chair in Gerontology there. Her research is on the diminished immune response to infections and cancer in elderly people. She and her husband, Ed, a mathematics professor at UCLA, have two children, Stephen, an architect in Berkeley, and Rachel, a pediatrician in Boise, Idaho.

Mark S. Epstein C’78 lives in Washington with his wife, Sandra Lee Stewart Epstein, and their children, Alexandra (Ali), who is seven, and Dashell (three). Since October last year he has served as executive director and CEO of the World Federalist Association, a 55-year-old non-profit working to promote world peace through world law; currently it focuses on the International Criminal Court, United Nations peacekeeping operations, and environmental and economic globalization. Dr. Mansoor Madani GD’78 GD’81 D’82 maintains an oral and maxillofacial practice in Bala Cynwyd, Pa. He was recognized by the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons for a new technique to treat enlarged and obstructive tonsils, as well as chronic nasal congestions, with the use of radio-frequency. He has also developed a new method to treat snoring and sleep apnea.

Cori Zywotow Rice C’78 is president of Hill and Knowlton/Samcor, based in Coral Gables, Fla., She founded the original company in 1996; Hill and Knowlton Inc., the international public-relations agency, acquired the company in June, further expanding its Latin American network.

Yet my CO must have seen something in me because just as we were completing unit combat training in Virginia before shipping to Vietnam, he called me in to tell me I wouldn’t be going, that he was recommending me to the Army’s prep school at Ft. Monmouth, N.J., for West Point Military Academy. I couldn’t get my mind around it. It was an honor so far beyond my comprehension that it took me a while to understand that he was serious. Then I broke his heart and said I couldn’t, that I had to go to Vietnam first to see if I wanted to make a career out of violence; we argued for a bit but I was insistent. I went, I was injured a few times: it changed my life and it got me in the back door to what is the oldest and the finest university founded by the most practical of the Founding Fathers. We are truly blessed to have been in these ivy-covered halls in what should have been and will be the leading nation of our planet.”

Dr. Gordon N. Wolffe GD’78 writes, “I started the postgraduate periodontal programme (a master of science degree) at the University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands in 1991; we celebrated the 10-year jubilee last December. My work is coordinating the programme and teaching; we have students from other countries besides the Netherlands.”

Dr. Sylvia-Lee Arleigh GEd’79 GrEd’79 has published The Freelancers, a collection of stories and pictures of people she interviewed over several years as a freelance writer and photographer for local Maine publications; included is a large selection of stories and poems written by her grandmother, Estella Maria Hollis Harris, and which were published mostly in the Lewiston Journal throughout the early 20th century.

Steven N. Haas C’79, Ardmore, Pa., an attorney with the law firm of Cozen O’Connor who concentrates his practice in mergers & acquisitions, and corporate-finance transactions, in June spoke on “Raising Capital in the U.S.: A Canadian Perspective,” at the Smart City Summit, sponsored by the Ottawa-Carleton Research Institute. And in July he was appointed to the board of the West Philadelphia branch of the Settlement Music School.

Elisabeth Magalnick Martin C’79 is director of planning, design, and facilities for the Brooklyn Public Library, the 300,000 sq.ft. central library and the 58 branches. An advocate for quality design in public buildings, she is frequently invited to lecture on library design. She recently received the 2002 Public Architect Award from the New York chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

Dr. Jane DiGiacomo McGowan EAS’80 M’83 is an associate professor of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and serves in its division of neonatology. Recently she was awarded an NIH grant to study neonatal brain injury. Her husband, Dr. Joseph C. McGowan GEng’90 Gr’93, is an associate professor of electrical engineering at the United States Naval Academy; he also serves as an adjunct assistant professor of radiology at Penn. They live in Annapolis, Md., with their two children, Joseph IV (six) and Alessandra (three).

David B. Cohen C’81 EAS’81 G’81 L’86 WG’86 was recently appointed deputy assistant secretary for insular affairs at the U.S. Department of the Interior. He heads the office for formulating federal policy on, and disbursing federal aid to, the U.S. territories, including American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands; and the former U.S. Trust territories, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau.

Dr. Kaye Husbands Fealing C’81 in July was promoted to full professor of economics at Williams College in Massachusetts, where she has taught since 1989. She has written on the Mexican auto-parts industry and on the comparison of Japanese and American automobile manufacturers.

Dr. Andrew Mannes EE’81 has left Penn’s faculty to accept a position in the Department of Anesthesia at the National Institutes of Health. Aside from clinical responsibilities in the OR and the Pain and Palliative Care Service, he will continue his research in developing new therapies for treating the severe pain suffered by people with advanced cancer.

Patricia K. Parrish C’81 wrote in June, “In January I joined WesBanco of Wheeling, W.Va., as vice president for community development and CRA officer. In addition to those duties, I am enjoying a lush spring on my Western Pennsylvania farm with my horses, goats, and dog.”

The honorees are Richie Ashburn, Steve Carlton, Robin Roberts and Mike Schmidt, whose sculptures are due to be unveiled in March 2004. Zenos unveiled his over-life-size bronze of Joe DiMaggio at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, Fla., at the end of August. And before the end of the year, he will unveil his monumental bronze “Convergence” at the Secaucus Transportation Center in New Jersey. He is currently working on an over-life-size sculpture of ClubCorp owner Robert Dedman for Pinehurst Resort, N.C.

Dr. Zahi Hawass G’83 Gr’87, the recently named Secretary General of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities, was appointed in April to the Board of Overseers of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. From 1998 he had served as Undersecretary of the State for the Giza Monuments, and earlier (1987-98) was general director of the Giza Plateau, Saqqara, and the Baharia Oasis. He has written Secrets of the Sphinx and Silent Images: Women in Pharaonic Egypt, both published by the American University in Cairo Press. He was recently elected an Explorer in Residence of the National Geographic Society.

Dr. Shannon E. Griffiths Gr’86, Frederick, Md., retired in July as an emeritus assistant professor of sociology, after more than 16 years teaching at Hood College. A specialist in criminology, she was a consultant to police departments, prisons, and community-action organizations throughout the country. She is currently working on a sociology-of-law anthology which is expected to be published in the summer next year.

David J. White G’87 completed a master’s degree in library and information science at Kent State University in December 2000, and since August last year he has been an assistant cataloger in the Western Reserve Historical Society Library in Cleveland. He teaches evening courses for the Department of Classical Studies, Anthropology, and Archaeology at the University of Akron. David sings in the Akron Symphony Chorus and is active in local community-theater organizations; he lives in Cuyahoga Falls.

After a long time away from Penn, I was asked to join the Alumni Class Leadership Council, that is all about reconnecting alumni back to the University and organizing the Classes to stimulate and encourage a vibrant alumni association. Believe it or not, it is almost time for our 15th Reunion—and you guessed it, I volunteered to be our Reunion chair. In April several members of the Class of 1988, together with members of other Reunion Classes, had the opportunity to return to campus to participate in an alumni conference with Penn’s executive management, and staff from the Office of Alumni Relations and the Penn Fund. The experience was nothing short of amazing. Campus has changed in ways you would never have imagined: gone are Stouffer dining hall, the wall of ‘paint’ on the Bookstore, and the Hall of Flags where we used to study late into the night. But in many ways it will always remain unchanged: folks were hanging out on College Green, just like we did 15 years ago. We were all energized to hear the amazing advances that Penn has made and its ambitious plans for the future. We had a roundtable discussion with Dr. Rodin, discussing current events at Penn and the academic Agenda for Excellence. We also heard from the vice provost on Penn’s physical transformation in the past 15 years, and where it hopes to be in the next decade—think, ‘Crossing the Schuylkill River.’ We all left the weekend with a renewed commitment to Penn, to our classmates, and of course, our upcoming Reunion. Hopefully we can find a way to have that excitement rub off on the rest of the class, and over the next seven months find ways for all of our classmates to get back in touch with the University. To start things off, we had a Summer Mixer in New York on July 17 at the Penn Club (see the Class Web site below). It was a chance to see old friends, make new friends, and hear about what is happening at Penn; we even had a video presentation on the planned campus expansion. We hope to have similar events on the West Coast and other regions over these upcoming months. David P. France C’89 is organizing the University of Pennsylvania’s first Penn Media Summit 2002, scheduled for Monday, Nov. 4, in New York. The all-day event will be held at the Museum of Television & Radio and will include panels, “The New Media: The Road Less Traveled,” “Women In Journalism,” and “Diversity In Television Programming.” There is also a Q&A planned with Hollywood producer Peter Guber. Hypatia and I then spent 2 1/2 years in Hawaii before returning to Washington five years ago. Meeka Jun Bondy C’90 <[email protected]> recently joined AOL Time Warner’s interactive-video group as vice president for legal affairs; the group is starting up a new cable-television service. She continues to live in New York, with her husband, Joseph Aaron Bondy, a criminal-defense lawyer, and two-year-old daughter, Rachel Soo Kee Bondy. Meeka e-mailed that they were expecting their second child in June.

Joshua W. Cohen C’90, a member of the creditors-rights group of the law firm of Cummings & Lockwood and resident in its New Haven, Conn., office, was named partner in July; he represents creditors in commercial bankruptcies and litigation, and in 1998 co-authored an amicus curiae brief for a case before the U.S. Supreme Court. Dr. Joseph C. McGowan GEng’90 Gr’93 was recently promoted to associate professor of electrical engineering at the United States Naval Academy. He e-mails, “At the USNA, military professors like myself compete for promotion via the same mechanism and the same promotion and tenure committee as their civilian counterparts: I became the second military professor to be promoted to associate professor under this system. After graduation I served on the faculty of Penn’s Medical School as a research assistant professor and currently am an adjunct assistant professor of radiology there. I accepted recall to active Naval service and an appointment to the faculty of the Naval Academy in 2000. My wife, Dr. Jane DiGiacomo McGowan, EAS’80 M’83, was recently appointed to the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as an associate professor of pediatrics; she is also a member of the division of neonatology there. She recently was awarded an NIH grant to study neonatal brain injury. We live in Annapolis with our two children, Joseph IV (six) and Alessandra (three).”

Roberta Koeppel C’92 GEd’92 won a national award from the Alliance for Community Media for having the best children’s professional public-access show in the 2002 Hometown Video Festival; the award is considered an “alternative media Emmy.” Her show Robby’s Room, airs monthly in New York on the Manhattan Time Warner cable-channel 56 MNN. She is both hostess and producer. “And it all started back at UTV at Penn.” The winning episode was about healing for New York children after Sept. 11. Robby hopes all will watch her program when in New York.

Dr. Michael F. Ballesteros EAS’93 is an injury epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. However, three days after the Sept. 11 attacks, he was flown to New York to help monitor for signs of a bio-terrorism attack: posted to Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx, he gathered data to determine if, in addition to the World Trade Center attack, a bio-terrorism attack had happened. Mike returned to New York in late October to help investigate the one death there from inhalational anthrax; he interviewed people in the building where the victim lived, and in the neighborhood, in order to retrace her actions in the two weeks before her illness. In December he also went to Washington to help educate postal workers about the anthrax vaccine and provide treatment: “Trying to properly inform confused and scared people about the vaccine helped me to hone my communication skills.” He is now back in Atlanta, researching childhood drowning and other injuries.

She is also director of a breast-cancer research project in the psychology department of the University of Miami. Kristine Daniels W’95 married Brian Borowsky W’93 in Melbourne on a glorious autumn day in a lakeside service on March 24; Irv Stern W’86, Susan Barry Stern Nu’88 and their family, and Laura Pucci W’95 attended. The four-week honeymoon took place in both New Zealand and Vietnam. Brian and Kristine have lived in Australia since 1999, where she is an organisational-change consultant for a local consulting firm, and he is product-management director for Australia’s largest online job site. They will shift continents once again as Kristine begins her MBA at the London Business School this month.

Now we’re back, living in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and I work for Barnes&Noble.com, while Dave is at JP Morgan Chase. By the way, he proposed to me last November during a night scuba dive off Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. We were 60 feet under in pitch dark, he pointed his flashlight to a little will you marry me sign, gave me an underwater pencil, and I wrote yes yes yes. Then we kissed and tried to drink, without drowning, a little bottle of champagne he’d brought. Big parrotfish looked on.”

Capt. Carl Forsling W’95 <[email protected]> e-mails, “I recently moved to Milton, Fla., to begin duty as a helicopter instructor pilot at U.S. Naval Air Station Whiting Field. Prior to moving, I returned on April 19 from a seven-month deployment aboard the USS Bataan, which included a month at Kandahar airfield in Afghanistan, where I flew several missions inserting and extracting U.S. Marine and allied forces. It was a very rewarding, but challenging experience.”

Dr. Ravi B. Berger C’97 graduated from the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in January. He will complete a residency in internal medicine at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland and in ophthalmology at the University of Kansas in Kansas City. He took a one-year sabbatical between his third and fourth years to engage in full-time laboratory research at Case Western on a mouse model of river blindness; he received a $25,000 grant from Research to Prevent Blindness for the work.

Im Ja Choi G’97, Blue Bell, Pa., is founding president of the Women’s Development Institute International, a nonprofit educational and cultural organization promoting human development and cooperation among people and organizations locally and internationally. In July she was elected to the board of the Girl Scouts of Southeastern Pennsylvania, serving as an at-large member from October to September 2004. A member of the Pennsylvania advisory board of the U.S. Human Rights Commission, she also serves on the boards of the United Nations Association of Greater Philadelphia; Laurel House, a shelter and provider of domestic-violence services; and the Asian American Women’s Coalition Philadelphia.

Then life called me and my wife, April Turner, back to our hometown of Memphis, where she teaches chemistry and biology at our alma-mater high school. I have been keeping busy writing for the weekly, The Memphis Flyer, as an intern and then as a staff writer. I covered everything from business developments on the Mississippi River, to the first year of the NBA Grizzlies in Memphis. While working for the Flyer, I have been completing my master’s in English with a concentration in creative writing at the University of Memphis. I have taught first-year college composition, written multiple short stories and essays—and my first book, which I am trying to sell to any interested publishers. This fall, I will head up the English department at the newly opening St. George’s High School in Collierville; the facility will be completed in August, with classes starting directly afterwards. Also of note, and most importantly, April and I are expecting our first child this January. We don’t know whether the kid is a boy or a girl, but we certainly hope that (s)he wants to go to Penn, and that (s)he wants to play basketball.”

Eugene Huang EE’99 W’99 GEng’99 has been serving as the Virginia state deputy secretary of technology since January. He is on leave from the University of Oxford, where he is pursuing a doctorate in economic history, and from where he received a master’s with distinction in economic and social history. In recent years Eugene co-founded BuildPoint Corp., an Internet firm in Redwood City, Calif., and served as a policy analyst for the FCC.
