1930s
William T. Golden C’30 Hon’79 received the 2001 Scholar-Patriot Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in March for his role in creating the National Science Foundation and the President’s Science Advisory Committee in the early 1950s.
Dr. H. David Prensky C’38 D’43 retired from dental practice in 1982 and returned from Mexico City, where he had lived for three decades, to Florida, where he had practiced for eight years after the Second World War; he had served as ship’s dentist in the amphibious forces in the Pacific. The move back brought him to Palm Beach, where he developed a second career: he became a lecturer on music history, giving courses on lives of the great composers at Palm Beach Community College, as well as for the Gilbert and Sullivan Society, Palm Beach Opera, and the Palm Beach Festival. Currently he is the pre-concert lecturer before Palm Beach concerts of the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra and chamber-music recitals at the Society of the Four Arts. Sometimes his lecturing activities take him far afield, in one instance back to sea again when he lectured on the transatlantic crossings of the QE2. On another occasion he was the guest lecturer on the life and music of Shostakovich at a Dartmouth College summer seminar. There have also been exhibitions of work from the collection of painting and sculpture he acquired during the years in Mexico: in 1990 the Boca Raton Museum of Art presented selected work from the Bryna Collection, named for his artist wife; and in March last year an enlarged exhibit was put on by the Center of the Arts in Vero Beach. Next year there will be another exhibition in Tallahassee.
C. Graydon Schlichter C’39 writes, “there is very little to report from this 85-year-old alumnus. However, I am semi-retired from the business as a life underwriter (62 years), but readily available for a game of golf. Life has been really good to me: I have two sons, one of whom has taken over the business. My sole regret is that my wonderful wife of 29 years, passed away in 1972 at 50 years. So I console myself with wonderful memories. Many readers probably have no memory of the Horn & Hardart cafeteria opposite the campus when I was a student. This is where I washed dishes from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily my entire college career, and which enabled me to pay for all my College expenses. This of course denied me opportunities to engage in extra-college activities. Having been raised on a farm, I learned that you did what you had to do to attain your goals: you can’t imagine how happy I was when I received my degree from Penn. In spite of my childhood polio at age two, which left me with an impaired right leg and a noticeable limp, I am gratified to the good Lord for this relatively long life with reasonable success. I am a very thankful Ivy Leaguer. In the words of that famous cowboy, Roy Rogers: “May the good Lord continue to have a liking for you and yours.”

Dr. Jack E. Cole M’41 wrote Richard and Sabina, a biography of Rev. Richard Wurmbrand and his wife, Sabina, which was published in April by Xlibris Corporation.
Irving Levine C’42 is president and founder of the Copley Fund, Inc., which “was awarded by Lipper, a recognized statistician of mutual funds, the number-one ranking for specialty-diversified equity funds for the past 15 years. Also, the March issue of Consumermagazine listed the top 100 funds which had the stamina to weather all sorts of markets “Copley Fund is in the top 100.” His current tennis rankings are: No. 1, New England 75 Singles age division; No. 1, New England 75 Doubles; No. 1, New England 70 Doubles; and No. 6, nationally 75 Doubles.

Dr. David S. Nemerow D’47, Rochester, N.Y., was on an NBC Television affiliate there earlier this year to discuss and demonstrate a new method for the early detection of oral cancer.
Dr. George B. Kauffman C’51, professor of chemistry at California State University at Fresno, was honored on the occasion of his 70th birthday by the S. I. Vavilov Institute for the History of Natural Science and Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences for his “contributions to chemistry and the history of chemistry, especially to his notable pioneering work on the history of Russian inorganic chemistry and his investigations of the role of Russian inorganic chemists.” He has been commissioned to write histories of two divisions of the American Chemical Society, due to appear in the forthcoming 125th-anniversary volume, and biographies of five leading American chemists, to appear in his feature, “Kauffman’s Chemical Corner” in Chemical Heritage. His latest book, Metal and Non-Metal Biguanide Complexes, co-written with Ranajit K. Ray, was published by New Age International Publishers.
Irving M. Hirsh W’52 L’55 recently met David Harrison L’55 and his wife, Ann Epstein Harrison W’58 L’61, in Marrakesh, Morocco, on a Penn-sponsored tour where he was celebrating his 70th birthday, and they were celebrating their own 40th wedding anniversary.

Dr. Joseph Bordogna EE’55 GrE’64, deputy director and chief operating officer of the National Science Foundation, in June received the 2001 Gold Medal from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers “for his leadership in the formulation of national policy furthering science, engineering, and technology, and for strengthening the educational infrastructure of these disciplines, and for his support of the society’s program to better prepare engineering graduates for the workplace.”
Dr. Bettyruth Walter CW’55 G’77 Gr’85 and her husband, Donald J. Goldberg W’51, spent six weeks in East Asia, where they biked from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi. They also explored Cambodia, Thailand and Singapore. “As well as biking, I am still teaching, now an advanced mathematics class in Philadelphia for very bright inner-city teenagers in the partners-in-education program. I am also a mentor in the Philadelphia Futures program. My husband is special counsel at Ballard, Spahr, Andrews & Ingersoll.”

Dr. Helen Conrad Davies Gr’60, assistant professor of medicine at the University, was honored in March by the American Medical Student Association with its 2001 National Golden Apple for Teaching Excellence Award.
David H. Marion W’60 L’63, chair of the Philadelphia law firm Montgomery, McCracken, Walker & Rhoads, LLP, co-chaired the April Sedona Conference on Complex Litigation. A nationally recognized trial lawyer, he concentrates on business litigation, antitrust, securities, professional-liability, and communication law. He successfully argued the U.S. Supreme Court case Philadelphia Newspapers, Inc. v. Hepps, considered a landmark in constitutional and libel law.
Selma Roseman Davis CW’61 G’62 lives in Bala Cynwyd, Pa., with her husband of 38 years, Edgar P. Davis C’49. With their three children, all alumni, they share 11 degrees. Selma and Edgar are prize-winning freelance journalists with Main Line Life, which has won best newspaper in North America, three years out of the last five. Selma’s book, Hula Kapu, has just been published: “murder, intrigue, and Polynesian mysticism fill the pages as a group of Hawaiians try to resist land speculators.”
Hon. Ronald Rosenfeld W’61 in March was nominated president of the Government National Mortgage Association. He was recently the Oklahoma secretary of commerce and earlier had served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for corporate finance, 1992-3.
Dr. Wesley B. Truitt C’61 <wtruitt@email.msn.com> took early retirement a few years ago after 26 years with Northrop Grumman Corp. He is now executive-in-residence at the College of Business Administration at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and an adjunct professor at UCLA’s Anderson Graduate School of Management. He wrote Business Planning: A Comprehensive Framework and Process, to be published by Quorum Books this autumn. He and his wife, Marianne, live in Marina del Rey.
Laurence S. Cutler C’62 and Judy Alpert Goffman-Cutler CW’63 GEd’64, Newport, R.I., are proud to announce that The National Museum of American Illustration (www.amerillus.com), which they founded, opened to the public on a reservations basis last year on July 4. It features the original art of Norman Rockwell, N. C. Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish, and over 2000 paintings of major American illustrators in “one of the 10 greatest mansions in America” at Vernon Court on Bellevue Avenue in Newport (Architectural Digest, Dec. 1999). They are also creating a memorial park honoring Frederick Law Olmsted, the prominent 19th-century landscape architect, with a memorial arch designed by, and in honor of, Louis I. Kahn Ar’24 Hon’71. Their daughter Jennifer Gorman, whose biological father was the late Alan Goffman C’63, is married to Jon Greenawalt Jr. C’91, son of University trustee Mary Ann Greenawalt CW’62 and Jon Greenawalt Sr. C’61; she gave birth to Allegra Rose Greenawalt on Nov. 2.
Dr. William S. Pierce M’62 GM’69 was honored in March by the Pennsylvania State University’s College of Medicine and the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center establishing an endowed chair named after him, the William S. Pierce Professorship in Surgery. He is known for his ground-breaking research in circulatory assist and artificial heart pumps.
Dr. Howard Pitkow C’62 G’63, professor of physiology at Temple University School of Medicine and the Temple Health Sciences Center, in March received a lifetime-achievement award “in recognition of his outstanding dedication to the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine and the Student Body.”
Carol McCullough Fitzgerald CW’63 in January became executive director of The Pennsylvania Society, a nonprofit organization which “annually honors the accomplishments of Pennsylvanians who have brought glory to the Commonwealth;” she is the first woman to serve in that post. In March she was honored by Women Making A Difference, and last year she was the executive producer of PoliticalFest, a multimedia exhibition celebrating American politics, which was staged in Philadelphia during the Republican National Convention. She had recently served as assistant vice president of alumni relations for Drexel University, and earlier as senior associate director of alumni relations at Penn. She serves on the board of Penn’s Association of Alumnae.

Schindler C’64 Gr’78 will give a paper on “Smith, Marx, Keynes and the New Deal” to a graduate-education seminar at Arcadia University in Glenside, Pa. “This paper is a response to the electoral coup d’etat of President Bush and the plutocrats who run American business and its captive elite universities.”
Hon. Daryl F. Todd Sr. W’64 <DTodd61986@aol.com> was appointed in December to the Superior Court of the State of New Jersey, assigned to the civil division of Atlantic County in the Atlantic City Court House. He lives with his wife, Mary, and youngest son, Dan, in Linwood. His older son, Daryl F. Todd Jr. C’91, is director of legal and regulatory affairs for the state Department of Health and Senior Services. His daughter, Bonnie Todd Marino C’93, is the recent mother of Patrick Marino and she lives and teaches in Linwood.
Dick Hauser W’65, a partner in the Washington office of Baker & Hostetler LLP, was nominated by President Bush in late April to serve as general counsel of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Prior to joining Baker & Hostetler, he served in the White House as deputy counsel to the President from 1981 to 1986; he had earlier served in the Office of Counsel to the President, 1973-4.

Hon. Michael Stiles C’67 has joined the Philadelphia Phillies as vice president of operations and administration. He served as the U.S. Attorney for Eastern Pennsylvania since 1993.
Rep. Katharine McDowell Watson CW’67 was elected in November to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. She formerly worked in Bucks County government, first as director of public information, and later as deputy administrator, 1996-2000. Locally she served as a township supervisor (1994-2000), and as a member of the Central Bucks School Board, 1985-89. She also served for six years as the first director of the Bucks County highway-safety program, which she created. And she has served as a commissioner representing Pennsylvania on the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission. A former English teacher, she has taught at Springfield High School in Delaware County. She has operated a home-based public relations firm, Coleraine Consultants, P.R. Katharine has lived in Warrington for 22 years with her husband, James, and son, Derek, who is a photographer with his own business in New York.

John S. Altman C’68 is co-filmmaker with Aimee Larrabee of the hour-long documentary film, Last Stand of the Tallgrass Prairie, that aired nationally on PBS on April 20; Barnes and Noble published a companion artbook. In June they had the premiere of their Celebrate Detroit at the city’s Henry Ford Museum; it is a companion Imax film to their Kansas City Presents. John’s next project is co-producing a documentary on artist Frederick J. Brown.

Davies PT’68 was promoted in March to executive vice president and chief operating officer of Phoebe Ministries, a not-for-profit, multi-facility organization affiliated with the United Church of Christ that specializes in health care, housing, and support services for older people in Eastern and Central Pennsylvania.

Dr. Susan McMullen O’Brien Nu’68 GNu’72, Wyndmoor, Pa., was appointed in March associate dean and director of nursing at Thomas Edison State College in Trenton, N.J. Previously she served on the faculty at the La Salle University nursing school was the coordinator of mental-health and substance-abuse services at La Salle’s neighborhood nursing center in Philadelphia.
Dr. Ronald D. Klein C’69 GEd’70 is a professor of English studies at Hiroshima Jogakuin University in Japan, where he has taught English language, literature, and creative writing for 11 years. His book, Interlogue, Studies in Singapore Literature, was recently published by Ethos Books; it consists of 16 interviews with selected Singapore writers, poets, and playwrights, with backgrounds on both the writers and their works. After graduating from Penn he taught English at West Philadelphia High School, trained teachers in Wisconsin and worked in the gifted and talented department of the old U.S. Office of Education. And he was awarded the only doctorate in creativity ever given by the University of Massachusetts. In May 1999, honoring the retirement of Bruce Montgomery after almost-50 years as director of the Penn Glee Club (including when Ronald was a member), he arranged for Monty and the club to tour four Japanese cities giving six concerts in 10 days. The final performance was in Hiroshima where Monty led 1,200 attendees in an encore of Japanese songs he had arranged in advance.
Dr. Lester A. Neidell Gr’69, professor of marketing at the University of Tulsa, won a Fulbright Scholarship to teach and study the business structure of the Czech Republic. He will be based at the University of Economics Prague from October through February, where he will teach an MBA marketing course in English. His research will examine how the once-heralded privatization experiment in the Czech Republic has failed and he will also explore options for the future.

In addition to ‘bringin’ ’em back alive’ (or not), we arrange refinancing, recapitalization and restructuring. About 20% of our work involves bankruptcy proceedings. All of this is the “flavor of the month” these days, as one can imagine. On the personal side, I continue to work on a long-term merger with the lady of my dreams, which also involves the integration of six children and various pets. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed and we are now in due diligence. I’m happy to report that the pets have bonded well and the children have formed an alliance against the adults.”

Dr. Alan R. Cohen M’72 GM’76 in April was appointed physician-in-chief at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and chair-designate of the departments of pediatrics there and at Penn’s School of Medicine. A pediatric hematologist, he has served on the hospital’s staff for 23 years.

Dr. Louis E. Baxter Sr. C’73 was promoted to executive medical director of the physicians’ health program of the Medical Society of New Jersey. Recently he was elected to the board of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and he serves on the national advisory council to the Center of Substance Abuse Treatment, under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Dr. Tom Feldman C’73 is a gastroenterologist with GI & Internal Medicine Associates in Hartford, Conn. His wife, Dr. Joyce Kamanitz, is a practicing psychiatrist in Hartford. Grasso C’92 graduated in August last year from the M.D.-Ph.D. program at Case Western Reserve University. “Then I travelled to China for three weeks with my wife, Ying, my son, Henry Han-Ling Grasso, and my mother; while there, we were able to visit with Ying’s family. Unfortunately I was only able to speak on the phone to my former roommate, William Jing-Wu Shen W’92, who currently lives in Hong Kong. We cruised along the Yangtze River to see the Three Gorges before the dam is finished, checked out the terracotta warriors in Xian, the gardens of Suzhou, the Great Wall, and many other sights. During the past year I have been doing a short postdoctoral research fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. In June [we moved] to Seattle, so I [could] begin my internal medicine residency at the University of Washington.”

Daniel Roarty WG’98 joined Nuveen Investments in May as a vice president and portfolio manager with the research and investment team of its Rittenhouse consulting services in Radnor, Pa. Previously he was vice president in the equity department at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Miller, Anderson & Sherrerd, LLP.

Samuel Bradford Tabas C’99 has been accepted as a McCracken Fellow in the Ph.D. program this fall at New York University. Brad plans to study comparative literature both in New York, and on the NYU campus in Paris. Currently he is tending bar at Taquet in Wayne, Pa., and writing a novel.
Henry C. Yip WG’99 in April joined AT&T Canada as executive vice president for network services. He was most recently with Telus Corp., where he held various executive positions in the operations area and also initiated the company’s multimedia business and created an ASP business in the geomatics area.

Armed with snow shovels, the wedding party included Brian Chirls EAS/W’00, Renee Farster W’99, Ruth Mercado W’98, and Dr. Erik Nordgren Gr’01. Before the reception was sabotaged by 16” of snow, expected guests included Ruby Arguilla C’98, Matt Barkan C’00, Pat Ede W/EAS’96, Dan Gutin C’97, Fred Jauss C’99 G’99, Andrew Kearney C/EAS’00, Lindsay Lion C’98 GEd’99, Gregg C.
