1930s

Hon. George P. Kiester L’37, senior judge of 50th Pennsylvania judicial district, was honored in 1997 by a commons in the Butler County Courthouse being named after him; the courthouse itself is known in the legal world there as “the house that Kiester built.”

1940s

Thomas U. Crary W’40 was reunited in 1998 with a dive bomber he had flown in the central Pacific during the Second World War. A friend had told him some years ago that the actual plane he had flown—with a May 1944 photo of Tom in the cockpit—was on display in the National Air and Space Museum. Tom went to Washington: “They had photographers there; I’ll bet you they took 100 pictures. What is it they say, everybody gets their 15 minutes of fame? I got two hours—it was fabulous,” he was quoted in an article last year in the North Dakota newspaper Fargo Forum. “I’m not a hero, but they got me in that category. Actually, I’m getting more than I deserve; I did a good job, but it was nothing spectacular.” Inducted into the Navy in April 1941, eight months before the country officially entered the war, he rose to the rank of lieutenant commander: his island-based squadron was responsible for keeping the sea lanes to Australia open.

Rabbi Jacob Pressman C’40 celebrated his 80th birthday last October “in song and style.” He is rabbi emeritus of Temple Beth Am, one of the largest Conservative congregations in Los Angeles, where he was an active rabbi for 35 years. He and Marjorie Steinberg Pressman CW’42 have been married for 57 years; they met as teenagers. An “enthusiastic capacity audience” at the University of Judaism witnessed this octogenarian rabbi changing hats and appearing as a performer: he sang, played the piano and electric keyboard, told stories and humorous anecdotes. Among surprise appearances were those by Steve Allen, Monty Hall, Ginny and Dave Barry, concert pianists Mona and Renee Golabek, Michelle and Sarah Golabek-Goldman, sons Daniel and Joel, and daughter Judy, who made a surprise visit from Israel. An innovator in the Los Angeles community since 1946, Jack established several Jewish day schools, Camp Ramah in the west and the University of Judaism; he also marched with Martin Luther King in Alabama in 1965, and was one of the 15-member national committee in 1964 who determined to go public with the Save Soviet Jewry campaign.

Dr. Leonard Apt C’42, professor of ophthalmology and founding chief of pediatric ophthalmology at UCLA’s Jules Stein Eye Institute, received the first distinguished-achievement award from Ethicon, Inc., a world manufacturer of ophthalmic products, especially for his work in identifying allergies to animal-product surgical sutures and his subsequent research that led to the development of absorbable sutures—now used worldwide.

Dr. William A. Frank W’43 retired from IBM in 1989 and now winters in Longboat Key, Fla.

Jerome J. Shestack C’43, chair of the litigation department of the Philadelphia law firm of Wolf, Block, Schorr & Solis-Cohen, was named to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council in November.

Eleanore Hess Ed’46 GEd’48 was inducted into the Pennsylvania Lacrosse Hall of Fame in February. Pete had coached lacrosse at George School 1949-56, and at Swarthmore College from 1957 to 1986, the year it hosted the Women’s Lacrosse World Cup.

Dr. Henry Gaines D’47, Brightwaters, N.Y., received the distinguished-service award of the Dental Society of the State of New York in December. Retired, he had practiced dentistry in Brentwood for 41 years.

1950s

Robert Schwartz W’52, a retired Ernst & Young tax partner who specialized in consolidated returns for more than 30 years, wrote a chapter on excess losses published on (lexis.com) as part of Matthew Bender’s Federal Income Taxation of Corporations Filing Consolidated Returns.

J. Russell (Czerniejewski) Hawthorne MtE’53 has retired. In 1984 he had joined Materials Engineering Associates, Inc., a R&D firm specializing in structural-materials research, and in 1996 he formed his own company that consulted on radiation effects to nuclear-reactor materials. He founded the International Group on Radiation Damage Mechanisms in Structural Materials.

John J. Fallon Jr. W’53 is the president and majority owner of Glenoaks Food Inc., which manufactures beef (and turkey, ostrich, venison and buffalo) jerky. A former mechanical engineer, he was already in his 60s and living quite comfortably on the income from an industrial park he owns in Sun Valley, Calif., when, three years ago, one of his tenants was unable to pay the rent. Rather than evict the tenant, John had another idea—he took over the company. Now, while many of his contemporaries “while away their days on the golf course,” he finds himself coping with production delays, and equipment and cash-flow problems. He has found it exhilarating watching the new business grow.

Harris Ominsky W’53 L’56, a partner in the Philadelphia law firm of Blank, Rome, Comisky & McCauley LLP, was presented with the Philadelphia Bar Association’s first “Good Deed Award” at its real-estate section meeting in November, for his excellence in the practice of law and legal education.

Robert W. Denney C’54 was inducted a fellow of the College of Law Practice Management in November. He wrote How to Market Legal Services, “one of the first books many in the profession have read.”

Dr. Valerie F. Levitan Ed’54 has been elected to the board of the National Organization for Rare Disorders. She is also the executive director of the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation, which is based in Chicago.

Dr. Theodore H. Rupp Gr’54 participated in the Lancaster County Senior Games last June. “I won gold medals in the 100m, 400m and 1600m races and a silver medal in the 1600m race-walk in the 80-and-up age group.”

Charles C. Rieger Jr. W’55 writes that he is “returning for the 45th Reunion, with roommate Karl King Hoagland Jr. and good friend Ken Kurtz. We are trying to get Class members to join us, and particularly members of our fraternity, Delta Psi.” He adds that in November he received a distinguished-athlete award from his high school, William Penn Charter School. “Am now retired and looking forward to returning [to Penn’s campus] to see the vast improvements.”

Normand B. Bleecher C’56 has been living in Boca Raton, Fla., since his retirement in 1988. “I have been married for 24 years to Ivy and we have one daughter, Stacy, who is a sophomore at Florida Atlantic University. Looking forward to our 50th Reunion in 2006.”

P. Gerald White W’56 writes “I just had eye surgery and can now see all my classmates with unlimited clarity.”

Dr. Bernard S. Baker ChE’57 GCh’59, founder of Fuel Cell Energy, Inc., in Danbury Conn., received the International Grove Medal at the Sixth Annual Fuel Cell Symposium in London last September. He started his fuel-cell career in 1959 when studying on a Fulbright scholarship at the University of Amsterdam with carbonate fuel-cell pioneer Dr. G. H. J. Broers, and has more than 20 U.S. patents for fuel cells and electrochemical systems.

Richard S. Wilson W’57 was inducted in November by the Fixed Income Analysts Society, Inc., as the 10th member of its hall of fame; this award recognizes the lifetime achievements of outstanding practitioners of fixed-income securities and portfolios analysis.

Melvin D. Brownstein SW’58 <[email protected]> retired in 1990 after almost 20 years of teaching in the School of Social Administration at Temple University. “In the years since, my interests and energy have gone into work with and for the mentally ill. I am active with the Alliance for the Mentally Ill and other mental-health organizations. In 1998 my wife and I relocated to Vermont. I would enjoy hearing from old friends and classmates.”

Rhoda Gordon Weinstein CW’58 has retired from the New Jersey Child Support Enforcement Probation Services, and relocated to Denver from Englewood, N.J.

Dr. M. Howard Lee C’59 Gr’69 was last year named Regents Professor of Physics at the University of Georgia, where he has served on the faculty since 1973. Only one Regents Professor is named a year and it is considered the highest honor there for faculty members.

1960s

Albert M. Tantala C’60 CE’61 was appointed to the board of the Frankford Hospital Foundation in Philadelphia.

Stephen A. Cozen C’61 L’64, founder and chair of the Philadelphia-area law firm of Cozen and O’Connor, was elected to the board of the Regional Performing Arts Center in Philadelphia. Under construction at Broad and Spruce Streets, it will be the home of the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society and other groups.

Alexander Fisher W’62 and Enid Fisher are pleased to announce that his daughter, Abby Goldstein, and David Goldstein had a baby boy, George, on Aug. 27, and that their daughter, Leigh Fisher C’95 married Avi Savar in New York on Nov. 13. After selling his insurance brokerage firm, Alexander formed a new company for risk-management consulting in New York and Brookfield, Conn. 

Robert E. Hoagland CGs’62, a professional genealogist, announces the publication of his new book, Augustine Stilwell (1769-1842) of Hunterdon and Mercer Counties, New Jersey, and His Descendants. It focuses on Stilwell and collateral families who were subsistence farmers in rural New Jersey.

Nat Greenfield W’63 GL’67 and his wife, Ann, the owners and directors of Camp Robindel for Girls, have completed their 23rd year operating the resident summer camp on Lake Winnipesaukee, near Center Harbor, N.H.

Edward F. Mannino C’63 L’66, chair of the litigation section in Philadelphia of the law firm Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld L.L.P., was last year named to the National Law Journal list of the top 10 trial attorneys in Pennsylvania.

Bill Novelli C’63 ASC’64 was appointed associate executive director for public affairs with AARP. Most recently, he served as president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, the nation’s largest privately-funded organization established to focus attention on reducing tobacco use among children. Earlier, he was co-founder and president of Porter/Novelli, the public relations agency that is now part of the Omnicom Group. He retired from there in 1990 to pursue a second career in public service.

Samuel S. Pearlman C’63 L’66 is pleased to announce that the law firm of Berick, Pearlman & Mills, which he co-founded in 1986, merged in January with the global law firm of Squire, Sanders & Dempsey LLP; he has become a partner in its Cleveland office, continuing his practice of real-estate law. He recently chaired a panel at a local bar association law institute. And he was listed in the recent edition of Woodward & White’s The Best Lawyers in America.

Ronald L. Rose W’63, a member of the bankruptcy practice group of the Detroit-based law firm of Dykema Gossett PLCC, was inducted into the American College of Bankruptcy last November.

Dr. Barbara Wojciechoski Crockett CW’64 recently completed a two-year fellowship in psychopharmacology with Duke University Medical Center and Glaxo Wellcome, 1997-99. While there she received a new-researchers award for her poster in obsessive-compulsive disorders treatment at NCDEU. She also was first author of a chapter on PTSD in Textbook of Anxiety Disorders(APA in Press). And last July she was appointed research assistant professor of psychiatry and director of clinical trials in mood and anxiety disorders at the University of North Carolina medical school.

Robin P. Hartmann W’64 has become a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.

William A. Runner Jr. WEv’64 W’66 <[email protected]>, Shavertown, Pa., was recently elected president of the Luzerne County Community College Foundation; he joined that board in 1994 and has served as treasurer. He retired from PNC Bank in 1996 and currently is a consultant for their capital-markets group.

Dr. Ronald J. Schindler C’64 Gr’78 has been invited to join the Owl Club at Temple University, in recognition of his generous financial support for the crew team.

Dr. Linda K. Hanson CW’65 G’67 Gr’76 received an outstanding faculty-member award from Ball State University in August.

David Kirk C’65 WG’67, head of Kirk & Co. in Boston, is the president-elect of the Counselors of Real Estate, the counseling affiliate of the National Association of Realtors; last year he received a CRE service award for his outstanding contributions to its education committee.

Robert Temple C’65 e-mails that his 10th book will be published in the U.K. this April by Century of Random House. The Crystal Sun, presents evidence of rudimentary telescopes in ancient times and reports on more than 450 ancient optical artifacts which he has discovered—“as well as some surprising findings in Egypt.” His last book, written jointly with his wife, Olivia, is Aesop. The Complete Fables, a Penguin Classic; see his Web site (www.robert-temple.com) about these books. He also was appointed adjunct professor of humanities, history and philosophy of science at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. And he is active in business: though based in England, for years he has commuted to Beijing, and for almost two years has been a strategic partner of Xerox Corporation in China through his company, China InfoNet Ltd.

Dr. Ralph W. Shrader EE’66 assumed the position of chair and CEO of Booz, Allen & Hamilton Inc., the international management and technology consulting firm, in October.

Dr. Fredric H. Schiffer C’67, a psychiatrist on the faculty of Harvard Medical School who is associate attending psychiatrist at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Mass., last October received the Grawemeyer Award in Psychology for his work on the dual-hemisphere structure of the nervous system and its implications for psychology and psychiatry.

Hon. Ronald M. Gould W’68 was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit; formerly a partner in law firm of Perkins Coie LLP, he maintains his chambers in Seattle.

James Oleg Kruhly C’69 and his firm were elected as the architect for a $9 million, multi-faith center for Pennsylvania State University at University Park.

1970s

Dr. Bruce Berger C’70 has joined Abington Medical Specialists, and practices cardiology at Abington Memorial Hospital. His daughter, Suzy, is a member of the Class of 2002.

Dr. Ted Miller GCP’70 Gr’75 received the excellence-in-science award of the injury control and emergency-health services section of the American Public Health Association last year. He also recently co-wrote an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association on gunshot medical costs.

Morris A. Nunes C/W’70 a Virginia attorney, was reappointed to and re-elected as chair of the Virginia State Board of Professional and Occupational Regulation, which oversees all commercial licensing in that state.

Dr. Harvey A. Shapiro GCP’70 is in his 29th year of residence, teaching and doing research in Japan. He proudly writes of the graduation of his daughter, Mona Rose-Ann, with a BA in graphic design from Chapman University in Orange, Calif., last May, and the return of his other daughter, Mina Lorine, from Benin where she had served for two years with the Peace Corps as a medical assistant. Both are now back in the country of their birth, Japan, planning the next phase of the lives.

Joel A. Brown C’71 <[email protected]> has been promoted to associate at HLW International, a New York architectural and engineering firm. His current project is the new university center at St. John’s University in Queens.

Howard Brod Brownstein C/W’71 has become a partner in the national turnaround-and-crisis-management firm, Nachman-Hays-Centrus, headquartered in suburban Philadelphia. “My firm is the result of a merger and more acquisitions are planned. I have recently served as interim CEO of a high-end, ladies-shoe retail chain and expert witness in a $4-billion malpractice case. Still a single dad, living in Penn Valley, Pa., hoping to settle down soon with six kids from combined households, possibly relocating into a large shoe.”

Dr. Virginia R. Cassidy Nu’71 <[email protected]>, professor in the School of Nursing at Northern Illinois University, was last year appointed assistant provost for academic planning and development.

Gloria Kaufer Greene CW’71 SAMP’71<[email protected]> is the author of The New Jewish Holiday Cookbook (published in September by Times Books/Random House and already in its second printing), and creator and webmaster of the corresponding Web site (www.JewishCuisine.com). She is married to Dr. Geoffrey E. Greene C’69, an allergist with Kaiser Permanente in Largo, Md. Their oldest son, Dylan, is president of TeacherReviews.com, a popular Web site where students around the world review and grade their college professors.

Jay Rosner C’71 lives in Mill Valley, San Francisco Bay Area, with his partner, Kate Vogt. “Two grown daughters still live on the East Coast. For the sixth straight year I’ll address the Div. I men’s basketball coaches (at the Final Four) on the SAT and NCAA eligibility. While I’m an SAT expert and critic (Penn should make it optional), I also run the nation’s largest SAT and MCAT preparation programs serving underrepresented minority students. I love my work as executive director of The Princeton Review Foundation. Nonprofit student advocacy, including successful litigation against ETS, has been a recurring feature of my post-Penn life. Clark Elliott C’72 is a space planner and new-work-practices consultant who has been based in Petit-Lancy, near Geneva, for the last 15 years; he recently established his own consulting company to work with companies in achieving complex organizational changes. He also lectures at two Swiss universities at the post-graduate level and speaks internationally about work practices, and he was interviewed for an article, “the Toxic Handler,” in the Harvard Business Review (July-August).

Dr. Carol Springer Fishbein GEd’72 has relocated from Miami to Palm Beach Gardens and opened a new psychology office there, specializing in the cognitive treatment of eating and severe anxiety disorders and depression. She and her husband, Bernard A. Strauss, are cheerfully unpacking in their new house.

Camille Moffatt Bertram CW’73 is a consultant with Dunbar Educational Consultants, Inc., in New Canaan, Conn., where she works with boarding-school, college-bound and special-needs students.

Dr. Bruce F. Corsello C’73 is an allergist in a group practice in Rochester, N.Y., where he has lived with his wife and two children since 1987. Son Steven (18) is one of 20 students nationwide who were named to the 1999 High School Academic All-America First Team by the Gannett News Service and USA Today.

Dr. Robert I. Grossman M’73, professor of radiology, neurosurgery and neurology at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, received a Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award from the National Institutes of Health. This $4 million funding will support his research on neurological disorders of people with multiple sclerosis.

Michele J. Hooper CW’73 has joined Voyager Expanded Learning in Dallas as its chief executive officer. Previously she was president and chief executive officer of Stadtlander Drug Co.

Larry Judelson EE’73 <[email protected]> is extremely happy to report that his oldest daughter, Rebecca, has received early admission to Penn, Class of 2004.

William Keller C’73 <[email protected]> married Lynn Steinberg on Oct. 29. They live in Jamaica Estates, N.Y., with his two children, Emma (10) and Sean (7). Bill is deputy commissioner of the NYC Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.

Arnold Rochvarg C’73 received last year’s outstanding full-time faculty award of the University of Baltimore School of Law, where he has been a professor since 1979. He has two daughters, four and two years old.

Steven J. Miller C’74 has become general counsel and secretary of InterPacket Networks, Inc., a provider of satellite communications and other Internet services to ISP’s around the world (www.interpacket.net). 

John F. Sopko C’74 has been appointed the deputy assistant secretary of commerce for export enforcement. He recently served in the Commerce Department as chief counsel for special matters, representing it before Congress and other agencies in a number of sensitive legal matters.

Dr. Judith S. Beck CW’75 Gr’82, a clinical assistant professor of psychology in psychiatry, and her father, Dr. Aaron T. Beck, the University Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry, celebrated the fifth anniversary of their founding the Beck Institute of Cognitive Therapy and Research; they are director and president respectively of this nonprofit institute that is located in suburban Philadelphia.

Howard Scott Pearlman C’75 is promoting the phrase “Philadelphia means I love you” as the next slogan for the City of Brotherly Love.

Peter Van Allen C’75 WG’83 and family have moved to Washington; He is principal of Van Allen Associates, specializing in marketing and business-strategy consulting.

Joe Ryncavage C’76 received his third Amos Award during AFLAC’s national convention in New York; this marks the third year he has been the leading broker nationwide with AFLAC. He lives with his son, Justin, in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area of Pennsylvania.

Lisa Lapidus Cohen C’77 and Richard S. Cohen W’78 moved to the Chicago area last August. Their daughter, Meryl, will celebrate her bat mitzvah in May with her siblings, Rachel and Daniel, and her parents, family and friends.

Joseph J. Forish GEd’77 was promoted to vice president and director of human resources at Rohm and Haas Co. in December.

Liz Michael W’77 is running for the Republican nomination for the California State Assembly for the 43rd District, which comprises Burbank, Glendale and parts of Los Angeles. Currently she is the chief executive officer and vice president of operations for Analon, Inc., an Arizona-based computer-manufacturing company. Describing herself as “a staunch economic conservative and a social libertarian,” she opposes the current Knight initiative there.

David W. Unger W’77 sold his cable interests, Avalon Cable, to Paul Allen’s Charter Communications, and has set up a venture capital fund, Avalon Equity (www.AvalonEquity.com) that specializes in investments in communications and media. “You might be interested that I own The New Hope Inn, the largest inn in New Hope (34 rooms), as an avocation to my venture capital business. New Hope is a great artsy town just 50 miles or so from Philly. Yet I know I never went there when I was in school.”

Elinore White C’77 was recently promoted to senior vice president at Ruder-Finn Healthcare, directing public relations programs for pharmaceutical and nutrition companies. In 1997 she relocated from Boston to New York, and now lives nearby in Rye.

Hon. Patricia Madi Brown W’78 was appointed a federal bankruptcy judge for Oregon; she maintains her chambers in Portland.

Jeffrey H. Marcus C’78 is assistant general counsel of Hay Group, Inc., the international management-consulting, information and electronic-commerce firm with headquarters in Philadelphia. Responsible for intellectual property and contracts, he also counsels the Hay Group e-business unit. Before joining the company, Jeff was of counsel for Rohm & Haas.

Ronald E. Alper W’79 <[email protected]> has been promoted to the supervisory position of branch chief in the Office of Public Utility Regulation at the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington.

Dr. Sylvia-Lee Arleigh GrEd’79 writes that she has successfully completed research proving to the Society of Mayflower Descendants her 15 lines to seven of the Pilgrims who arrived on the Mayflower (including John Alden and Myles Standish), and is completing research to prove three more. She has also discovered that her sister-in-law is a descendant of William Bradford.

Sarah A. Kelly GEd’79 L’85 has joined the Philadelphia-area law firm of Cozen and O’Connor as a member of its labor and employment-law department. She has been a senior counsel with PNC Bank Corp.

Brian S. Mudge EE’79 GEE’84 L’91 <[email protected]> has been elected partner of Kenyon & Kenyon, an intellectual property law firm. He specializes in rights relating to the Internet and developing electronic-commerce technology.

Peter Thomas Roth W’79 and his wife, Noreen Donovan Roth, sent a copy of the front page of “The Roth Times” for Oct. 12 which announced the birth that day of their second child, Brendan Thomas Roth; brother Ryan was exactly 18 months older. “In keeping with the Roth family tradition of new-born babies, Brendan achieved a 9.9 APGAR. This phenomenally high score prompted his parents to ask if they could get a two-for-one discount at Ivy League schools.”

Jan Schorr SAMP’79 has left Bear, Stearns and relocated from New York to Denver to join George K. Baum as a vice president in its health-care public-finance group.

1980s

Rex F. Brien GRP’80 has been a shareholder with the law firm of Christie, Pabarue, Mortensen & Young in Philadelphia. He concentrates his practice in insurance law. And he has been a board member of the Clean Air Council since 1995.

Gary Butler ME’80 GEE’82 WG’82 and Lesley Fitzgerald Butler C’80 announce the birth of their son, Evan Christopher, on June 3. They recently relocated to Wytheville, Va. Gary is plant manager of two plants for Hutchinson Sealing Systems.

Robin M. Potter WG’80, head of a sales & marketing consulting start-up, was elected last December to the board of Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia.

Robert Sonnenblick W’80 is married, with three children, and lives in Pacific Palisades, Calif. He is a partner in a large West Coast-based real-estate development firm which specializes in high-rise construction. “Having spent two years living in High Rise North while at Penn, I now design all of my new buildings in a similar architectural motif—just kidding!”

Daniel P. Weinreb W’81 has joined Paragon Realty Group LLC as principal. He lives in Purchase, N.Y., with his wife, Wendy, and their three sons.

Jonathan Guy Flatow C’82 and his wife, Caroline, announce the birth of their third child and second son, Michael Edward Odell Flatow, on Aug. 13, weighing 9 lbs. 10 oz. They live with Kristin (four) and William (two) in Chicago.

Susan L Friedman-Becker C’82 GCP’82 and her husband, Mitchel, are “realizing the American dream in Raanana, Israel. We are now homeowners, complete with our two sons, Yishai (12) and Micha (10) and now a dog, Chuckie. Mitchel set up a private psychology clinic at home and I went out to join the world of marketing in Israeli hi-tech start-ups at RegiSoft, an e-commerce player in electronic-license distribution. Laura Feinland Katz W’82 and her husband, Steven Katz, are pleased to announce the birth of their first child, Joshua Samuel, on June 15. As a landscape architect, I saw the crimes committed to the environment by unknowing home owners. Managed lawn care and multi-set lawn treatments typically involve pesticides, herbicides and petroleum-based fertilizers. All of these elements can be toxic to healthy natural soils and can also lead to build-ups in carpets of homes. An alternate method is to care for the soil with compost and create a healthier environment for us all. I urge us all to feed the worms, save the bugs and get your lawn off drugs. As a 1999 exhibitor at the ASLA convention in Boston I was astonished that there seemed to be no messages from this fine society of professionals that the Earth or the natural environment was part of their thinking. The McHarg mentality that we, as keepers of the Earth, might show some leadership as stewards, was absent. I feel the need now more strongly to work diligently in my profession to protect the environment. In this area of lawn care I see great changes needing to occur. We are poisoning our own Earth for the sake of a green lawn: it must change.”

Kelly J. Wallace W’87 has been a CNN White House correspondent since October. “So far I’ve covered the marathon budget negotiations, the Middle East peace summit in Oslo and Campaign 2000. Before taking on the CNN position, I worked as a reporter/ producer at the State Department for Fox News Channel … [and] did two one-one-one interviews with the Secretary of State, and provided daily live reports on the Kosovo conflict. My on-air career began in 1996, in Albuquerque, N.M., where I worked as a general-assignment reporter. And before heading out West, I spent six years at CNN in Washington, as an off-air reporter and a producer for some of the network’s public-affairs shows. But my television career truly began at UTV, when I, along with a few other Penn students, worked on a news magazine called Penn P.M.”

Jonah joins big sister Ariel Shayne, who turned three on Sept. 16. A musician skilled in a number of instruments, he has toured the country with musical groups and released two group albums, mentioned in Billboard magazine.

Dr. Julie Bright Stewart C’89 and Dr. Daniel Stewart C’89moved to New York in July: Daniel is in his first year of a psychiatry residency at Mt. Sinai Hospital and Julie is a neuropsychologist at the Rusk Institute for Rehab Medicine, part of New York University Medical Center. She received a Psy.D. in May 1998 from Widener University’s Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology. Daniel graduated last May from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. “We’ve been working on our careers, with no children for now, but happily married for seven years.”

Founder of the New York-Japan Chamber of Commerce, he also serves as Japan chair of the Asian-American Advisory Council in New York, a liaison organization between the Asian community and the city. Fluent in five languages, he is often called upon to translate local rules and regulations for ethnic business owners.

Mary Brush G’91 was part of the Thornton-Tomasetti Engineers team that won Chicago’s first CANstruction competition, in which architects, engineers and interior designers create structures from aluminum cans and other food products, that are later donated to local food banks. After 10 hours the T-T team erected a raised bascule bridge, made of cracker boxes and tomato-paste cans, spanning a pool of Green River soda cans, while a coffee-can traffic-court building and a tuna-can Marina Towers provided the backdrop.

We are loving the winter weather after years of living in Santa Cruz, Calif. Even my two-year old is learning to ice skate, and during one recent hockey skirmish my oldest son was heard to say, “Nice shot, eh?” just like a true Canadian. (I am certainly not encouraging this.) We will return to Santa Cruz towards the end of winter, and get back to the real world, where I will finish off the school year homeschooling Alaric and re-open my preschool business, while Lennard gets back to game programming.

Joshua Kopelman W’93, co-founder of Infonautics, was named one of 40 individuals under the age of 40 who have made the biggest impact on the Philadelphia region by the Philadelphia Business Journal last year. He also is head of a new Internet start-up called Half.com, that “will change the way person-to-person commerce is handled online. … [It] offers people an organized, retail, online marketplace (www.half.com) to buy and sell previously owned, high-quality consumer entertainment merchandise—with no auctions, bidding or competition.” The company is based in Conshohocken, Pa.

Kabir Akhtar C’96 has been working as a freelance TV/film editor in Los Angeles, most recently putting together episodes of VH1’s hit series Behind the Music.

Joel Chasnoff C’96, a comedian and actor, served as master of ceremonies at an early January event in Israel for Project Birthright, a joint work of North American Jewish organizations and philanthropists. He performed stand-up comedy to more than 4,500 people.

Ananya Dash C’96 is an associate in the law firm of Riker, Danzig, Scherer, Hyland & Perretti LLP in Morristown, N.J. When at Georgetown, she was a panelist on CNN’s Burden of Proof.

David C. Quattrone EAS/W’96 married Robyn Quattrone in September 1998. She is a litigation associate in the Washington office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, LLP. David recently joined a northern-Virginia start-up technology firm, Cvent, Inc., as director of product development. The company is developing an online event-management system and an engine for direct, one-to-one, e-mail marketing. Dwayne Sye EAS’95 is director of technology there.

Rebecca Simon Nu’96 GNu’98 <[email protected]> and Darren Bramen WG’99 announce their engagement; an August wedding is planned. “We are currently living and working in the suburbs of Philadelphia: Darren is a portfolio manager at Hawthorn, an investment management firm, and I am enjoying my position as the nurse practitioner at Villanova University’s student health center.”

Amiel Weinstock C’96 passed the Massachusetts Bar and completed an LLM in taxation at the Boston University Law School. In January he joined Lurie & Cutler, a Boston tax firm. Catherine Hardy Pakaluk C’98 married Michael Pakaluk at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Worcester, Mass., on Aug. 15. She is a graduate student in economics at Harvard University and Michael is a professor of philosophy at Clark University. They live in Worcester and are pleased to be expecting a son, Joseph, in May. The wedding was featured in a recent issue of Boston Bride magazine, as something of a modern Sound of Music story: Michael has six children who lost their mother to breast cancer. Catherine reports that she thoroughly enjoys her counter-cultural life as newlywed, expectant mother, adoptive mother of six, freelance writer, homemaker and student in a demanding doctoral program.
