Dr. Samuel Heiman, ChE’30, Gr’48, past national president of the American Electroplaters and Surface Finishing Society, was recently elected a fellow, one of 38 in this society with a membership of about 10,000. The honor was awarded in recognition of his contributions to the advancement of the science and technology of surface-finishing, and for leadership in the dissemination of this knowledge. A national honorary member of the society, he has published many papers and holds several patents in this field. And after retirement as head of the plating and coatings section of General Electric’s Missile and Space Division, he served in the International Executive Service Corps.
Edward Hamburg, W’49, Cherry Hill, N.J., has retired from Gloucester County College, where he was a professor in business studies. He was awarded the Citizens Medallion for service to the college and the county. Having chaired the college’s Awards and Scholarship Committee for 20 years, Barnes and Noble honored him with the establishment of a continuing business scholarship in his name.
Dr. Lionel D. Wyld, C’50, Gr’59, wrote The Navy in Newport, a pictorial history tracing the U.S. Navy’s presence in the harbor of Newport, R.I., from Colonial times to after the Second World War. It was published by Arcadia Publishing, an imprint of the British house Chalford Publishing Corp., in its Images of America series.
Arthur J. Greenbaum, W’52, is senior partner of the intellectual-property group at the New York City law firm of Cowan, Liebowitz & Latman. He was awarded the first Pattishall Medal for Teaching Excellence of Trademark and Trade Identity Subjects at the International Trademark Association meeting in May. In 1991, he retired as an adjunct professor of law at New York University, where he taught trademark law for many years.
Sonya Friedman, CW’53, New York City, is the librettist and videomaker of Memoirs of Uliana Rooney, a chamber opera with video-projections, that tells the story of a fictional American composer who humorously confronts startling changes in society from the avant-garde 1920s to the present-day. This 65-minute piece was staged at Penn’s Annenberg Center in February and March, and presented by Relache the Ensemble, in collaboration with American Opera Projects. Sonya is the originator and writer/producer of opera subtitles for television productions of operas, from 1976 to today; she is the principal writer of the subtitles for The Metropolitan Opera Presents and Live from Lincoln Center. Since 1983, she has also written and produced supertitles for opera companies throughout the country, including the Met, New York City Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Seattle Opera. She has written, directed, and produced a number of other works for film and television in the U.S. and Europe.

Dr. Gerard J. Brault, Gr’58, the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of French and Mediaeval Studies at Pennsylvania State University, edited Rolls of Arms of Edward I, 1272-1307, a two-volume work published in April by the Society of Antiquaries of London. Rolls of arms began to be compiled in the 13th century to keep track of coats of arms, then proliferating among Western European knightry and nobility.
Alexander E. Fisher, W’62, Bridgewater, Conn., has opened a new office in New York and Florida, A. Fisher Co., Inc., which provides outsourced risk-management services. His daughter, Abby, is receiving her master’s in special education this year, while Leigh Fisher, C’95, is attending NYU to obtain a master’s in social work, and Ruth will be entering the freshman class of Tulane.
Dr. Robert M. Bliss, C’65, e-mails that after 28 years in England, 27 spent at teaching at Lancaster University, he and his wife, Paulette, moved back to the USA. In August, Bob took up his new post as dean of the Pierre Laclede Honors College at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. At Lancaster, where he was also principal of Grizedale College, he directed degree programs in independent studies and American studies. His book, Revolution and Empire: English Politics and the American Colonies in the Seventeenth Century, won the 1993 Distinguished Book Award from the Society of Colonial Wars, a prize previously won by Drs. Richard S. Dunn and Mary Maples Dunn, Hon’95, “a pleasing coincidence” — while Bliss was at Penn, Dr. Dunn was his academic adviser.

William W. Jones, C’70, in the spring stage-managed performances at the Annenberg Center of Memoirs of Uliana Rooney, a new 65-minute, multimedia, chamber opera, by composer Vivian Fine and librettist Sonya Friedman, CW’53. The work was presented by the Philadelphia-based group, Relache the Ensemble, in collaboration with American Opera Projects, which is devoted to the development and presentation of new American opera, and based in New York City’s SoHo district, near New York University, where Bill is a faculty member of the Division of Libraries. (Sonya is the originator and writer/producer of opera subtitles, for television, and of supertitles for live productions.)
Dr. Michael A. O’Connell, W’70, has earned his Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Washington. He has a practice in Everett, Wash., specializing in the evaluation and treatment of sexual deviancy. He co-authored Working With Sex Offenders (Sage 1990). He recently received the Graduate Research Award of the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers for his study, “Using Polygraph Testing to Assess the Deviant Sexual History of Sex Offenders.” He lives in Seattle with his wife, Lee Nelson.

Dr. Valerie J. Hoffman CW’75, is associate professor of religion (Islam) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where in October 1996 she was named University Scholar. This is a recognition of excellence in research, and includes a three-year grant to be used for research purposes. She published Sufism, Mystics, and Saints in Modern Egypt with the University of South Carolina Press in 1995.

David, an attorney, is a partner with Kleinbard, Bell and Brecker, a law firm in Philadelphia, where he has a government relations and litigation practice. It depicts a fictitious encounter between the young genius painter, Picasso (played by myself), and the young physicist, Albert Einstein, at a cafe in Paris … The action takes place just before Einstein has published his Special Theory of Relativity and Picasso has painted his ground-breaking Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, and is a reflection on the nature, elusiveness and serendipity of genius. I would like to arrange group rates and alumni discounts for Penn alums for this production.” It will be staged in a number of cities, including three-week runs in Los Angeles in late January and Fort Lauderdale in late February and two-week runs in West Palm Beach in late March and Toronto in late April.

John Sturrock, GL’85, Edinburgh, is the first director of training and education at the Faculty of Advocates in Scotland, responsible for the introduction of advocacy-skills training to the Scottish Bar. The program which he established won an award for the best use of training in the legal profession in the U.K. last year. He has also been appointed to the newly established Judicial Studies Committee, which is responsible for the training of judges in Scotland. In the past two years, he has taught in the advocacy-teacher training program at Harvard University. He and his wife, Fiona, have three children, Jennifer, David, and Michael.

Michelle K. Napoli Schaaf, C’91, a state assessor with Dauphin County Aging, married Carl J. Schaaf, an electrical engineer in management with Bell Atlantic, on January 4. They live in Harrisburg, Pa.
Marc R. Wolf, C’91, is proud to announce that he has been appointed vice president of Motion Picture Development for Di Novi Pictures in Santa Monica, Calif., which is affiliated with Warner Bros. Prior to this, he was a development associate for Goldie Hawn’s Cherry Alley Productions at Disney. “This has been quite a departure for me since I dropped out of medical school in ’91, and I could not be happier.”
Darryl Anderson, EAS’92, wed Rhonda DeFlorimonte, W’92, on May 10 “in our nation’s capital.” The freshmen year sweethearts exchanged vows amid well wishes from Penn pals: Diara Holmes, C’92, Nicole Bell-Simon, W’92, Robert Elliott, W’92, Chuck Moore, EAS’93, Shelly-Ann Smith, EAS’93, Karen Wright Saunders, C’92, Iris Melendez, W’92, and Catherine Barnett Ferguson, C’92. The couple resides in Philadelphia.
Jonathan Blum, C’92, recently graduated from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University with a master’s degree in public policy. “I will be working as a program examiner for the Executive Office of the U.S. President in the Office of Management and Budget.”

John R. Lennon, C’92, and his wife, Rhian Ellis, write to announce the birth of a son, Owen Henry Ellis Lennon, on June 30. The couple are writers and live in Missoula, Mont.
Mary Wallace, C’92, and Dr. Aaron Donoghue, C’92, were married on May 31 in Valley Forge, Pa. Mary has just completed a master’s in elementary education at the University of Oxford and New York University; Aaron is a first-year resident in pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Christopher C. Lee, C/W’93, finished law school at the University of Minnesota in 1996, and has joined the Seattle law firm of Gregory S. McElroy, PLLC, as an associate; he practices in environmental and land-use law and litigation.
Christine Arakelian, C’94, recently celebrated her first wedding anniversary with Brendan Ross, an American attorney she met while working at a law firm in Germany. She also finished her first year of law school at the University of Virginia, and is currently working in the State Department, actively pursuing a career in public international law. “I would love to hear from any old friends with whom I lost contact.”
Oliver J. Graves, C’94, and his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth Lewis, are engaged to be married sometime this winter.
Richard Leit, C’94, and Jaclyn Israel, C’93, were married in West Orange, N.J., on June 8. They are living in Alexandria, Va. Richard is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in clinical psychology at American University. Jaclyn is working as a social worker in Washington, D.C.
Drew Pearson, C/W’94, and Shiva Sarram, C’94, were engaged in August and are planning their wedding for next summer. Drew is currently working for General Atlantic Partners in Greenwich, Conn. Shiva is working for Tiger Management in New York City.

Siller, C’95, Washington, D.C., e-mails that after working for two years at Brintnall & Nicolini, Inc., a company that provides worldwide market research for the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries, he is pursuing a Master of Science in Foreign Service at Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service; his expected date of graduation is May 1999.
