1930s

HERMAN WOLF, W’33, Huntington, Conn., writes that he is a “fortunate 85-year old, recovered from colon cancer, with four children and six grandchildren” and that his 18-year-old daughter is finishing up her freshman year at Boston University. He is still working in public relations and is completing a book on Buckminster Fuller, with whom he worked for nearly forty years, including the latter’s final years as professor-in-residence at Penn.

MORTYN K. ZIETZ, W’36, Hollywood, Fla., was featured in an article last fall in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. He and his wife (they celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary last September) had retired there in 1984; he earlier had practiced law in Rhode Island for many years as a special counsel to large agricultural firms. After two years of retirement, he was bored and soon working from his home as a financial strategist. He later set up a financial consultancy with old friends from the Ft. Lauderdale law firm of Ruden, McClosky, Smith, Schuster, & Russell. Now, at 81 years, he serves as a special counsel there, finding loan funds for emerging companies and working three ten-hour days-the rest of the week is left for golf. “‘If, when, I go to bed at night, I’ve known a little more than when I got up that morning, then it’s been a good day. I’ve still got plenty to learn.”

1940s

LORRAINE ROSENAU ALEXANDER, CW’45, Huntington Valley, Pa., had her collage paintings displayed at Artforms Gallery in Manayunk; she incorporated hundreds of handmade, patterned papers, collected on worldwide travels, to create her images.

1950s

FRANK NICHIPORUK, W’51, Cinnaminson, N.J., a consultant, announced his retirement after a 50-year career in finance and management. From 1989 until his retirement last year, he was president and CEO of Frank Manning Associates, which specializes in restructuring firms that have severe financial and manufacturing problems.

CAROL HELITZER SHEDLIN, CW’51, New York City, performed her fourth solo cabaret act, Pick Yourself Up, at Judy’s, on 44th St., across from the Penn Club.

DR. A. ROYALL WHITAKER, C’52, Gr’65, retired after 31 years of teaching economics at the United States Naval Academy. He and his wife, Dorothy, are looking forward to spending more time in Annapolis with their eight grandchildren; two of their three sons are teachers, as was his father, Dr. Arthur P. Whitaker, who taught history at Penn for 35 years, making three generations of Whitakers in the teaching profession.

CLAIRE PINELES GOLD, CW’53, Westport, Conn., former superintendent of schools there, last year was named Connecticut Educator of the Year, for her work on behalf of minority students and the cause of school desegretation. She served as an educational consultant after retiring in 1988, and was instrumental in the establishment of the Six-to-Six magnet school in Bridgeport in 1993; when the Connecticut Supreme Court ordered the state to achieve racial desegregation, this school was cited as a possible model to achieving that.

DUNCAN A. BRUCE, W’54, New York City, writes that he is half-owner in several corporations which invest and trade in the stock market; one of which owns and imports Dram Select, a single-malt Scotch whisky. He wrote The Mark of the Scots, presenting the achievements of people of Scottish ancestry throughout the world, published by Birch Lane Press, last November. His wife, Tamara, is an executive at the Rudin Management Co., and their daughters, Jennifer and Elizabeth, are musicians and singers, appearing in New York nightclubs.

DR. EUGENE N. MYERS, W’54, Pittsburgh, has been appointed coordinator for international affairs for the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and international editor of the journal Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery.

REV. MARGARET E. HOWLAND, CW’55, Yonkers, N.Y., recently went white-water rafting for seven days down the Colorado River, running all the rapids for 280 miles through the entire length of the Grand Canyon, and, spent a week scuba-diving and doing underwater photography in the Red Sea on her third trip to Egypt. In October, she had an article on scuba-diving, with several of her photos, published in Markets, a new Dow Jones magazine.

DR. CHHAGANBHAI B. BHAKTA, C’56, Rosemead, Calif., a microbiologist, retired in November 1995 after 30 years with the Los Angeles Department of Health. Since his retirement, he and his wife, Sarojben, have travelled to South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and the U.K. He serves as vice president of the Indo-American Society for Health Science Professionals.

R. THEODORE MOOCK JR., W’56, Dallas, retired from the investment business after a 34-year career. His new book, Get That Interview-The Indispensable Guide for College Grads, published by Barron’s, was reviewed in the November Gazette.

P. GERALD WHITE, W’56, Wilmington, Del., reports that after 17 years of running his own business, he decided to join Cushman & Wakefield, the national/international real estate services firm; he is senior director of the company’s office in Wilmington.

PAUL H. ZUCKERMAN, W’57, a New York City attorney with his own practice in trusts and estates, was interviewed on CNN in November and answered questions from viewers around the country. He was quoted in the International Herald Tribune (Feb. 8-9, 1997), discussing wills. He is looking forward to seeing his classmates at the 40th Reunion.

DR. ART SHRIBERG, W’66, Cincinnati, professor of management and entrepreneurship at Xavier University, is also a senior project consultant for J.B. Reid and Associates. Starting in February, his weekly column, “A World of Difference,” was syndicated in 20 newspapers in the United States and Canada. His most recent book, Practicing Leadership: Principles and Applications, was published by John Wiley and Sons, Inc.

WILLIAM KELLER, C’73, Bayside, N.Y., has recently joined the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation as deputy executive director in charge of business development and strategic planning for Metropolitan Hospital Center, and as the chief financial officer of the Generations Health Network.

AMY MacDONALD, CW’73, Falmouth, Maine, had two of her picture books, The Spider Who Created the World and Cousin Ruth’s Tooth, published by Houghton Mifflin and Orchard publishers respectively. She also wrote Little Beaver and the Echo, published by Putnam’s Sons and since translated into 14 foreign languages. Her other book, Rachel Fister’s Blister (Houghton Mifflin), was selected one of “the Best of 1990” by Parents magazine.

DR. HARRY D. FISCHER, C’74, New York City, was recently named chief of the division of rheumatology at Beth Israel Medical Center.

CLAIRE MARCUS, CW’74, GFA’78, has been named to the Pennsylvania Roster of Artists in Education. She will be an inaugural resident artist at the Banana Factory Studios, commencing in Bethlehem this fall.

JOHN F. SOPKO, C’74, e-mails that his article, “The Changing Proliferation Threat,”was published as the cover story of the winter 1996-97 issue of Foreign Policy. It was based upon a series of hearings he managed for Sen. Sam Nunn (Ga.), who was the ranking Democrat on the U.S. Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. On the job front (with the retirement of Senator Nunn), John was recently hired by Sen. John Glenn (Ohio) as a senior counsel on the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs, responsible for helping conduct the investigation on campaign-finance abuse in the 1996 Federal election.

DR. MICHAEL J. YAROS, C’74, Cherry Hill, N.J., an ophthalmic and cosmetic surgeon, was recently named president of the West Jersey Medical Society, and also membership chair of the New Jersey Jewish Medical Society. He and his wife, Anne, wish to announce the birth of their second child, Laurel Gwynne, on December 3.

DR. DON FETTEROLF, C’75, M’79, e-mails that he recently changed job titles, to become the medical director for Alliance Ventures, Inc. NATHAN D. ISEN, W’75, Miquon, Pa., “announces the opening of yet another art gallery in Main Street in Manayunk,” specializing in modern and contemporary art and French antiques. He also co-wrote Louis Icart: The Complete Etchings, which is currently getting ready for its third printing.

KATHERINE REIER, Nu’75, Boyerstown, Pa., has been “called” as director of music and organist at New Hanover Lutheran Church. She will direct a comprehensive music program for the 1200-member, 297-year-old congregation. She will also “continue her ‘hobby’ as a critical-care registered nurse, part-time, at Pottstown Hospital.”

POLLY E. MOORE, SAMP’76, Durham, N.C., the physical-therapy consultant at the Durham V.A. Medical Center (and for outpatients of Duke General Medicine seen at the center), has established a primary-care physical therapy clinic within the ambulatory-care service there.

JONATHAN V. COHEN, W’78, has become associate chief of the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau of the Federal Communications Commission. Previously, he directed the FCC’s first auction of wireless telephone licenses (which generated $7.7 billion for the U.S. Treasury) and appears in the Guiness Book of World Records as the largest auction ever. He lives in Bethesda, Md., with his wife, Aileen Miller Cohen, and their kids, Aaron (four) and Hayley (two), for whom he has sacrificed his golf game.

MARK D. COHEN, C’78, Madison, Wis., who graduated with a master’s in sociology from the University of Wisconsin, last year received an A.A.S. in computer-information systems from Madison Area Technical College.

DR. PIERRETTE MIMI POINSETT, ChE’78, Modesto, Calif., e-mails to announce the birth of her firstborn, Joshua Mandela Poinsett, on January 24, after a high-risk pregnancy. “He is feisty, healthy and growing fast. I am probably learning more pediatrics as a mom than I ever did in residency!” This spring, she plans to return to the public sector as a medical consultant and child advocate; most of her medical career has been in public medicine, including a three-year stint in the National Health Service Corps (in Las Vegas, Nev., and Lamont, Calif.). Since moving to Modesto a year ago, she has been active in the community, serving on the steering committee of the Perinatal Substance Abuse Coalition of Stanislaus County and the Stanislaus County Head Start Health Advisory Committee. “I also have been active in lactation consulting, environmental pediatrics, and bringing gardens to local schools, as a member of the Modesto Garden Club.”

DR. SHERYL B. COOPER, C’79, recently completed her Ph.D. in educational administration and supervision at

Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. She is currently employed as the coordinator of the sign-language program at Towson State University in Baltimore, and as a consultant on sign language and deaf-related issues. Sheryl and her husband, Eric K. Reisman, celebrated the birth of their second daughter, Lianna Cooper Reisman, in June 1996. Big sister Kayla Cooper Reisman, age four-and-a-half, loves her new role!

JAMES M. MARINO, W’80, has been appointed senior vice president for investments at First Albany Corporation; he works out of the Garden City, N.Y., office and is living Massapequa with his wife, Laura, and daughters, Nina and Christine.

DR. BRUCE L. ROSEN, C’80, Englewood, N.J., a gastroenterologist in private practice, married Elise S. Rosensweet, a senior project manager at a marketing research firm in Paramus, N.J., on June 8.

CINDY KRAMER SHARE, C’80, an attorney, writes that she and Dr. Jerold M. Share, an endocrinologist in practice in Washington, D.C., were engaged to be married, with a wedding on March 9, in Santa Barbara. “I’ll return to the East Coast after an eventful 10 years in Los Angeles, as Cindy K. DR. DANIEL T. COLEMAN, C’81, Yonkers, N.Y., is now reviewing new drug applications at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. His wife, Irene, gave birth to their second child, Hewitt, on August 9, “while en route to the hospital!” Irene is now back at work at Standard and Poor’s.

ROBERT DONAGHY, CGS’81, Rock Springs, Wyo., a registered histotechnologist (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) and a diplomate in laboratory management, has been appointed assistant editor of the Journal of Histotechnology.

DR. AMY WAGNER, C’81, Chicago, a senior staff therapist at the Family Institute, and her husband, Dan Sabol, welcome their second child, Lily Anna, on March 12.

MATRICE ELLIS-KIRK, C’82, Dallas, has been named vice president of administration for the Texas Business Hall of Fame Foundation. She is a director with Spencer Stuart.

ROBERT LUNDGREN, LAr’82, e-mails that he was third-place winner in a competition for the Indian Memorial proposed by the National Park Service for the Little Big Horn Battlefield National Site in Montana. He was chosen from 550 entrants and received a $5000 cash award. The park service was looking for ideas for a memorial to the Indian victors in the battle of 1876. The three winners were announced in mid-February and a reception was held in Denver in March. DR. ALAN S. PENZIAS, C’82, e-mails that he has been appointed assistant professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive biology at Harvard Medical School, and has joined the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Boston IVF.

MARK YOUNG, C’82, and his wife, Laurie, moved to South Natick, Mass., in July and had their second son, Matthew, in February.

HOLLY J. MINDICH, W’83, and her husband, DR. GREG TRUBOWITSCH, C’83, live in El Paso. Holly is the CFO and co-owner of Main Strike Telecommunications, which provides fax-on-demand, broadcast fax, and international-callback services. Greg is a retina surgeon with Southwest Retina Consultants. They have two girls, Marielle, age 19 months, and Jamie, four months.

AMY BLATTE BRAUNSTEIN, C’84, GEd’85, and DR. RICHARD E. BRAUNSTEIN, C’85, Roslyn Heights, N.Y., announce the birth of Andrew William’s brother, Michael Benjamin, on January 20. Amy is the computer-math specialist in the Roslyn School District and Richard is an ophthalmologist in Manhattan.

He resides in Philadelphia with his wife, Melissa, and two year old daughter, Naomi.

STEPHEN OLDER, C’85, New York City, was named partner in the New York office of the law firm of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld. He and his wife, Michele, recently gave birth to a son, Andrew James.

DR. THOMAS R. PERELES, EAS’85, Waynesboro, Va., an orthopaedic surgeon in private practice in Fishersville, and SUSAN HOROWITZ PERELES, C’88, an attorney, announce the birth of their son, Zachary Austin, on September 18.

STRICKER C. SANFORD IV, C’85, and his wife, Jennifer, report the birth of their second daughter, Virginia, on January 12. Rick is a member of U.S. Senator John Warner’s staff, handling military matters in Norfolk, Va. He is also a lieutenant commander in the Naval Air Reserves, flying the E-2C Hawkeye with VAW-78 in Norfolk.

PAMELA JOY PISCATELLI FABER, W’86, Virginia Beach, Va., and her husband, John F. Faber Jr., are pleased to announce the birth of their twins, Nathaniel Andrew and Jillian Paige Faber, on January 22. The twins are the couple’s first children. On January 1, Pamela was made a partner of the Norfolk-based law firm of Kaufman & Canoles; she practices in the Virginia Beach office, specializing in commercial real estate and land use.

STEPHEN D. GALOWITZ, C/W’86, writes that he recently left his legal career to join UtiliSave Corp., which provides utility-bill and other services to the real estate industry. This firm, based in Forest Hills, N.Y., was founded six years ago by his friend, MICHAEL STEIFMAN, W’86. Stephen and his wife, JILL KESSLER GALOWITZ, W’87, live in Merion, Pa., with their two children, Emily Margot (three) and Ethan Myles (two). Jill has worked for six years in marketing for Campbell Soup Co., where she was recently promoted to director of sales planning.

DR. DAVID R. SCHLESSEL, C’86, and KAREN HANDWERKER SCHLESSEL, W’87, announce the birth of their daughter, Zoe, in August. Zoe’s brother, Mark, turned three in March. Karen is the finance manager for Northern Telecom’s Central Region, and David will complete his cardiology fellowship at the University of Chicago in June.

KATHLEEN HYSON ACCURSO, C’90, Greenwich, Conn., who married David F. Accurso on July 8, 1995, graduated with a MAT in elementary education form Manhattanville College, May 11, last year; and just days later, on May 18, gave birth to their first child, Mary Teresa. “P.S. LEWIS P. PERLING, C’90, Atlanta, an attorney specializing in insurance defense, is pleased to announce that he has become associated with the firm of Drew, Eckl and Farnham, in Atlanta. He is also pleased to announce that he was married to Rhonda Elkins, of Savannah, on November 24.

JAMES RYU, W’90, and HE YOUNG RYU, C/W’90, recently celebrated their first anniversary. James is finishing up his last semester at Columbia University Business School while He Young is an assistant treasurer at Credit Lyonnais in New York City. James’s roommate, TONY DESPIRITO, W’90, is an equity analyst in New York, after graduating from Harvard Law School and working as a lawyer in Boston for a few years. “We still keep in close touch with GREG MERRILL, W’90, who is studying medicine at Yale after working as a consultant and entrepreneur after graduation.”

MILES YAKRE, W’90, Miami, a vice president at John Alden Life Insurance Co., married Judy Ferrao, on August 24; she is a customer-service supervisor in the John Alden group of companies.

DR. ERIC L. BRITTON, C’91, M’96, and CONRAD ROEBER, WG’94, are happy to announce their engagement to be married. Eric is currently interning in family and community medicine at San Francisco General Hospital and will be leaving this June to take up medical training as a hospital house officer in the United Kingdom. Conrad has recently been promoted to engagement manager at Spectrum Strategy Consultants, in London. They will live in central London.

DAN IANNICOLA JR., W’91, e-mails that he recently left his position as an attorney with John Deere in Moline, Ill., and returned to his hometown of St. Louis to join the Office of Legal Counsel of the May Department Stores Co.

CRISTINE (RICE) RICKETTS, W’92, Albany, N.Y., graduated with a masters in international business from the University of South Carolina in May last year, and married Eric Ricketts on June 8. Crissie works for GE Consulting and Eric is with PP&G.

NANCY SHACKLETON, W’92, graduated from the UCLA Law School in May 1995 and is currently with O’Melveny & Meyers in Newport Beach, Calif.

REGAN ALLAN, C’93, and JAMES FLEISCHER, W’93, Tuckahoe, N.Y., e-mail that they were married in West Hartford, Conn., on July 13, during Hurricane Bertha. “Although we lost power, the food, drink, and dancing seemed to make everyone have a good time.” Regan is a kindergarten teacher at a public magnet school for the arts and humanities in New Rochelle. DONNA GIARRATANO, W’93, is in her second year at Harvard Law School, and lives in Cambridge, Mass.

MEGAN HOPPEL, W’93, married Seth Goldblum on Nov. 9 in Norristown, Pa. She works for AT&T, and they will be living in Yardley. He is an accountant with Deloitte and Touche in Philadelphia.

SUZANNE KIMBALL, C’93, Phoenix, is a regional marketing director for the Harlem Globetrotters there. suzannek@harlemglobetrotters.com is her e-mail address. Previously, she was a sports marketing representative for the Phoenix Firebirds, a triple-A baseball team, and community-relations coordinator for Super Bowl XXX. WALTER PIECYK, W’93, and JESSICA BRICKMAN PIECYK, C’94, were married on July 6 at Tavern on the Green in New York City. Walt is currently a vice president in PaineWebber’s equity-research department, covering the wireless industry. Jessica will graduate in May with an M.P.A. from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.

MICHELE STEIN, C’93, is engaged to DENNIS MENDOZA, W’93; they will be married on July 26, in Boston. She is a fourth-grade teacher in Hastings, N.Y. They live in New York City.

MAXIMILIAN WEISE, EAS/W’93, and MIREYA KAM, C/W’93, were married in Panama on December 28. Max was an associate in the Caracas office of Booz Allen & Hamilton and is a first-year MBA student at Wharton. Mireya graduated from Tulane Law School last May and is currently an associate with the law firm of Palmer Biezup & Henderson in Philadelphia, practicing primarily in the areas of maritime law and insurance-defense litigation.

JENNIE ROSENBAUM MATTHEWS, C’94, e-mails that her husband, PATRICK MATTHEWS, C/W’93, is a consultant with MRA International, a sports and entertainment consulting firm in Center City, Philadelphia; she is the special-events coordinator at the Wharton School.

LISA AARONSON, C’95, and MICHAEL ROUB, W’94, were married on July 6, in Los Angeles. They currently reside in Chicago, where Michael is pursuing his MBA at the University of Chicago and Lisa is working in convention management at Smith, Bucklin & Associates.

ADAM ANHANG, W’96, and RONDA JANOWSKI, C’94, New York City, had one of their sheva brachot celebrations, after their wedding on December 22, at the Off-Broadway comedy, Grandma Sylvia’s Funeral. Adam is a real estate investment banker with the Athena Group and Ronda is in her second year at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

SUMA CM, C’96, e-mails that graduation from Penn was not the end for her; she “is she is off and running, working a day job in New York while [also] working as an artist and freelance writer based in Cherry Hill, N.J.” From Monday through Thursday, she is in the medical-acquisitions department at Marcel Dekker, Inc., a scientific-technical-medical publisher in Manhattan. On Fridays and weekends, she’s coming up with designs, filling orders, and seeking new markets for her art and writing. Suma works in a variety of media: watercolors, collages, and recently, she has been using natural materials, especially pressed flowers and leaves.
