HELEN RAUSCHER KLINE, CCT’18, Cheltenham, Pa., celebrated her 100th birthday on September 23, at the Unitarian Universalist House in Germantown, just a few blocks from her childhood home where she lived until just a couple of years ago and from where she commuted to Penn.
1920s
Benjamin Loscher, W’28, and his wife, Edna, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on September 6; he then celebrated his 95th birthday in November. He is a retired lawyer (degree from Temple) and postal supervisor. They live in Philadelphia and have two children: Barbara LOSCHER Friedrich, Ed’57, who lives in Merion, Pa., and Robert Loscher, ChE’58, GCh’60, a retired engineer and computer-services supervisor who lives in Cape Coral, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

DR. T. NOEL STERN, G’40, Gr’42, South Dartmouth, Mass., emeritus professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, has published a dozen op-eds concerning casinos and gambling for The Boston Globe, The New Bedford Standard-Times, and The Dartmouth-Westport Chronicle.
DR. STANLEY SCHOR, C’43, G’50, Gr’52, Hawley, Pa., received the annual Career Achievement Award from the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America for significant contributions in the field of biostatistics and its pharmaceutical applications. (He received a similar award for lifetime contributions to the statistical sciences from the Philadelphia chapter of the American Statistical Association several years ago.) Dr. Schor taught at Penn for 16 years before moving to Temple University’s medical school and then to Merck Research Laboratories, where a scholar-program and a fellowship for Merck statisticians to pursue doctoral studies in biostatistics at the University of North Carolina were named after him. He retired in 1991 and splits his time between Florida and the Poconos
1950s
ARTHUR R. DUNLOP JR., CE’52, Tallahassee, Fla., has retired after 32 years as senior vice president of Bart, Dunlop & Associates, a transportation engineering- and planning-consulting firm in the Southeast. For ten years after graduating from Penn, he held supervisory engineering positions with the Pennsylvania Railroad in Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland.
DR. ROBERT A. ERB, Ch’53, Valley Forge, Pa., has been elected president of the American Anaplastology Association. Currently he is an independent scientific consultant and serves as technical director of SiliClone Studio and is involved there in the development of external, silicone prosthetic devices.
WILLIAM S. CUNNINGHAM, W’56, Sao Paulo, is a partner in Spencer Stuart, the executive recruiting firm. He has been working in Brazil since graduating from Penn.
Dr. Howard D. Greyber, Gr’53, Potomac, Md., e-mails that incidentally while still staying active and publishing in theoretical astrophysics, this Penn Ph.D. physicist completed a “Minimed Dr.” course at the National Institutes of Health, and is now taking a course in immunology that NIH offers. “It’s good to keep intellectually active.”
DR. EUGENE N. MEYERS, W’54, Pittsburgh, professor and chair of otolaryngology at the University of Pitsburgh, was invited to join the editorial board of Auris Nasus Larynx, published by the Society for Promotion of International Otorhinolaryngology.
JOHN WEICHSEL, C’54, WG’56, Southington, Conn., town manager of Southington, was recently elected chair of Tunxis Recycling Operating Committee, a consortium that covers 14 towns in the area.
DR. MORTON F. RUBINSTEIN, C’57, Cinnaminson, N.J., chair of Hahnemann University School of Medicine Alumni Association from 1994 to 1996, associate in Pediatrics at Rancocas Valley Hospital, Willingboro, New Jersey, clinical associate at Cooper Hospital/University Medical Center, Camden, New Jersey, and associate in Pediatrics and clinical instructor at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, Philadelphia, Pa., was recently recognized as a 1996 Alumni Award recipient.

DR. MANUEL SCHONHORN, G’59, Gr’63, Milford, Pa., professor of English at Southern Illinois University, retired after 27 years teaching there. He joined the faculty in 1968 as associate professor and was made full professor in 1973. SIU honored him with a teaching award in 1970.
ELAINE GAYLON SMITH, CW’65, a Philadelphia attorney, celebrated her 20th year in practice and her 15th year in the partnership of Smith and Leibel, which specializes in domestic relations. Elaine has also been married to Dr. Robert A. Smith for more than forty years.

CAROL A. KIRYLUK, CW’68, Orlando, Fla., has been appointed senior vice president of human resources for the Tupperware Corporation.
DR. WILLIAM D. RUTENBERG, C’68, Highland Park, Ill., has been appointed Deputy Medical Director for the John Hancock Signature Advantage Health Plan. He is also a senior consultant with the consulting firm MedStrategies, Inc. He is also a member of the editorial board of Healthcare Innovations and was a speaker at the National Managed Healthcare Congress in Washington, D.C. He and Marsha Davis Rutenberg, CW’70, are proud parents of Craig Rutenberg, C’95, and Diana Rutenberg. When not at home, they can be found actively involved in community theater on the North Shore.

CHARLES C. COYNE, W’70, East Fallowfield, Pa., an attorney with Hepburn, Willcox, Hamilton & Putnam in Philadelphia, has been elected chair of the Chester County Health and Educational Facilities Authority, which issues tax exempt bonds on behalf of Chester County hospitals, health-care communities, schools and colleges, and affiliated institutions.
DR. ROBERT S. ADELAAR, M’71, Richmond, Va., professor of surgery and vice chair of orthopaedics at the Medical College of Virginia and chief of orthopaedics at McGuire Veterans Hospital, was re-elected to the board of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.
Sandy Dechert, CW’71, moved to St. Cloud, Minn., last year with her partner, Dr. Amy E. Harrison, assistant director of the family-practice residency program at St. Cloud Hospital, and their two-year-old daughter, Alyson F. Dechert. While on the East Coast, Sandy received the Health Sciences Communications Association’s Mobius Award, and other awards (some international) for her work in medical advertising, environmental science, and software instruction. Sandy now produces consumer, patient, practitioner, and sales information under the name “Phrasemaker” from sandydecaol.com (website in progress!).
DR. CLIFFORD C. DACSO, C’72, Houston, was named the John S. Dunn Research Professor in Internal Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and the Methodist Hospital of Houston; he is chief of general medicine at Baylor and vice chair for clinical affairs in medicine at Methodist.
GARY H. LIEBERMAN, C’72, a public defender in Las Vegas for 19 years, and his wife Mara are pleased to announce the birth of their third child Anna Rachel on July 4.
DR. JACQUELINE E. WADE, SW’72, Gr’83, Murfreesboro, Tenn., was named the director of the Wilbur N. Daniel African American Cultural Center at Austin Peay State University. Wade is also founder and chief executive of Wade Educational Programming and Consulting Services.
Linda Rabben, CGS’74, Takoma Park, Md., has founded Human Rights Umbrella, a non-profit organization, to help survivors of human-rights abuses. She is Brazil co-group coordinator of Amnesty International USA and was recently elected to the American Anthropological Association’s Committee for Human Rights.

MARINA ANGEL, GL’77, Philadelphia, professor of law and associate dean for graduate legal studies and external programs at Temple University, received the Sandra Day O’Connor Award of the Philadelphia Bar Association last fall.
REGINA SOKALER WOLGEL, SAMP’77, Chicago, and her husband Sanford celebrated the birth of their daughter Kayla Chaviva on September 10. Regina is the Illinois OT clinical manager for Therapy Network Resources, a Midwestern contract agency for rehabilitation services.
DR. DANIEL ABESH, C’78, a primary-care physician in Cherry Hill, N.J., and his wife JANE EISEN ABESH, SAMP’78, announce the birth of their second son Jonathan Franklin; he joinds his sister Jesse and brother Joseph.
Michael H. Diamant, C/GEd’78, e-mails that he and his wife Robin are pleased to announce the birth of their first child Marc Benett on July 11. Zachary R. Fraser, EAS’78, an engineer with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (US Department of Transportation) e-mails that he and his wife Marybeth Griswold proudly announce the birth of their twin boys Michael and Kevin on August 19. They live in Arlington, Va.
DR. ROBERT A. GERVASI, WG’78, Batavia, Ohio, dean of academic and student affairs at Chatfield College, has been named dean of the two Kentucky centers, at Louisville and Radcliff, of McKendree College, whose home campus is in Lebanon, Ill.
DR. Tamar E. Granor, C’78, GEE’81, Gr’86, Elkins Park, Pa., e-mails that she is the editor of FoxPro Advisor magazine and an independent database developer. She has spoken about Microsoft FoxPro at a number of conferences and user groups, including the last three Microsoft FoxPro International Developers Conferences. She notes she is also the mother of a member of the high-school class of 2000.

RONALD, W’80, and JAYNE (DAVIS) PERILSTEIN, W’80, Bala Cynwyd, Pa., co-founders of the Arjay Group, Inc., will receive the State of Israel Bonds New Leadership Division’s Jerusalem 3000 Award, presented annually to those who have exhibited outstanding leadership qualities in their Jewish communal activities.
JOHN EDWARD ROSENBAUM, C/W’80, Fresno, Calif., an attorney affiliated with the Los Angeles-based law firm of White & Case, and his wife Elaine Hannah, a principal of Solutions, Inc. (a San Francisco-based company which specializes in healthcare management and cardiac-rehabilitation programs sponsored by insurance companies), announce the birth of their first son Benjamin on July 12. They note they are certain that “he will be a fourth-generation candidate for admittance to the University of Pennsylvania”.

Ji-yul Kim, C’81, writes that after earning a master’s degree in East Asian studies from Harvard University in 1991, he pursued a career in the US Army, entering the military-attache program, with a focus on northeast Asia. LAURIE ALLEN, C’82, has recovered from surgery for the removal of cancer and has resumed her managerial responsibilities in her position at PepsiCo’s world headquarters in Purchase, N.Y.
KEITH BANK, W’82, in October, started his own venture-capital firm, KB Partners, which provides both capital and expertise to companies in a range of industries. He and his wife Barbara live in Highland Park, Ill., with a son Kyle, almost five years old, and a daughter Valerie, almost a year old.
Bill Dow, GAr’82, Essex, Conn., e-mails that he is currently a vice president and project manager at Jeter, Cook & Jepson Architects in Hartford. Since March 1992 he has been project architect for the Foxwoods Resort Hotel & Casino in Mashantucket, which is now the largest casino facility in the world (over 5.5 million sq. ft.) and was designed and built in the last six years, on the fast-track. “It has been more than entertaining.” He notes that JCJ is always looking for good, young talent, and interested Penn architecture grads should feel free to send him their resume for review; it is a 76-person firm working on all sorts of building types, and on projects from Connecticut to Korea.

DR. Mark Lieser, C’85, is a fellow in gastroenterologic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota; he and wife, Yael Loewenberg Lieser, C’85, have four children, Talia, Tzofia, Amitai, and Gilad.
JAMES CORNER, GFA/GLA’86, Erdenheim, Pa., is assistant professor of landscape architecture and regional planning at the University. He has been practicing as a landscape architect and teaching in Manchester, U.K., London, and New York. He has lectured and exhibited his work around the world; and he edited The Recovery of the Landscape, published by the Architectural Association, in 1995.

ALAN BUTSCH, C’88, recently got married to Melissa Roberts. They bought, are living in (and are very slowly renovating) a 120-year-old house in Hagerstown, Md., that is on the National Register. Alan, who is working for the Montgomery County Department of Fire and Rescue Services, was recently promoted to the rank of lieutenant and is assigned to the Sandy Spring station.

Ellen completed her MBA at the University of Chicago and accepted a position as special assistant to the president of the University of Chicago Hospitals and Health System; Doug is an attorney with the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.
DR. DARREN L. HALLMAN, EAS’90, Clifton Park, N.Y., received a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Purdue University, and has joined the GE Research and Development Center in Schenectady.
Jeffrey A. Pfaendtner, EAS’90, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering at Penn, won a bronze medal for rowing in the lightweight four without coxswain at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Susie Wise, C’90, e-mailed that she is working as a multimedia producer in San Francisco, looking to go back to school for an advanced degree in education. She is also hoping to begin filming a documentary on ‘Rodeo Princesses’ early this year with fellow College grad Corey Weinstein, C90, GFA’91.
DR. SUSAN M. BEGELMAN, C’91, Cleveland, received her M.D. from Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia in May of 1996. She is currenlty doing her residency in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

LILLIAN BENEDICT, C’92, Huntingdon Valley, Pa., recently became an associate in the commercial litigation department of the Philadelphia-based law firm of Cozen and O’Connor. She will concentrate her practices in the areas of general commercial litigation, including contract and employment disputes, securities and common law fraud actions, class actions, and preliminary injunctions.
Peter Ganzenmuller Jr., EAS’91, Sea Cliff, N.Y., began teaching elementary school (2nd – 8th grade) at St. Hilda’s and St. Hugh’s School in New York City, last fall.
NOREEN REILLY HARRINGTON, C’92, Boston, is a clinical fellow in psychology/psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School and a doctoral candidate in clinical psychology at Temple University. She married Dr. Joseph Harrington on May 26.
L. Janusz Hooker, W’92, Hong Kong, who is working for Asian Infrastructure Fund Advisers there, won a bronze medal representing Australia in the men’s quadruple sculls at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.
DR. Diane Y. Jerng, C’92, and Dr. Norman H. Liu, C’92, were married on June 2 in Irvine, Calif. Diane recently received her M.D. from Washington University in St. Louis and Norman recently received his M.D. from the University of California, San Francisco. They are both first-year residents at hospitals in the Long Beach area.
CHAD G. BOONSWANG, C’93, Ardmore, Pa., graduated last May from Villanova Law School, and is now an associate in the workers-compensation department of the Philadelphia law firm of Swartz, Campbell & Detweiler.
MARK SULLIVAN, C’93, Havertown, Pa., has been named production editor of the Rutgers Law Journal. He has also taught special education in the Baltimore school system.
Lisa Hope Brichta, C’94, was recently promoted to a consultant in the New York office of Towers Perrin’s general management services division. She has been involved in recruiting Penn undergraduates for Towers Perrins’s associate program.

DR. MIKHAIL CHKHENKELI, G’94, Gr’96, Williamstown, Mass., was appointed an assistant professor of mathematics at Williams College.

Matthew B. Kratter, EAS/W’95, recently joined Merrill Lynch Investment Banking’s telecom, media & technology group as a second-year analyst. He spent his first year out of Penn as an analyst with the mergers and acquisitions boutique, the Lodestar Group (now Societe Generale Investment Banking).
