Hon. William T. Coleman Jr. C’41 Hon’76 is a senior partner and the senior counselor in the Washington office of the international law firm of O’Melveny & Myers. He had served as Secretary of Transportation in the Ford administration, and was a former president of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. In February he was honored at a Washington symposium in tribute to him, hosted by Pennsylvania’s U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, and in commemoration of Black History Month.

George Wills W’49 was inducted into the Middle States Tennis Hall of Fame this past October. As a student, he had played varsity tennis for four years and was captain during his senior year. He is co-president of the Class of 1949.

Maxine Weisman Greenberg Ed’61 writes, “My son Erik Greenberg Anjou wrote, directed, and produced the new film 8: Ivy League Football and America, which features a lot about Penn. I am a real-estate agent with Prudential Fox and Roach; my area is Margate, Longport, Ventnor, and AC [in New Jersey].”

Frederick Rankin MacFadden Jr. Gr’61, a professor emeritus at Coppin State University in Baltimore, wrote the story “I Got You Now, Tom Sawyer,” which was accepted for the April conference of the Western division of the Conference on Christianity and Literature. It is about “a homeless, mentally challenged woman, an aficionado of Injun Joe; she pursues a boy, whom she identifies as the witness that testified against her hero in the novel.” He also wrote an autobiographical paper: “To Draw the Tadpole, Then the Frog: A Demonstration School for My Expanding Aquarium.” It traces his intellectual growth “in the culture of knowledge, chiefly through the bio-spiritual studies of man and man’s zoological stewardship connection with creation.” By request, that paper was submitted to the Rowan University library.

Murray A. Greenberg C’65 L’68 has joined the Miami law firm of Stearns, Weaver, Miller, Weissler, Alhadeff & Sitterson as of counsel in the land-use, environment, and government-affairs department. Previously he was county attorney for Miami-Dade County. He serves as an adjunct professor at the law schools of the University of Miami and the Florida International and St. Thomas universities, teaching state and local government, taxation, and election law; he is also certified as a mediator and an arbitrator. With a career that “has focused on all aspects of local-government law,” he is special counsel to the Miami-Dade County School Board. He is married to Phyllis Kirschner Greenberg CW’67: their sons are Ben Greenberg C’93 and Jerry Greenberg C’96 G’96.

Robert Temple C’65 writes that he and his wife wrote The Sphinx Mystery, published in February in the USA by Inner Traditions. They live in England, where they also “run a theatrical-design archive, a Romanian cultural foundation, a Green-cement company (holding international patents on a new process with the potential to reverse climate change by producing cement with zero-carbon emissions; the cement industry being the worst air-polluter of any industry), and a new music mini-label which has just issued ‘The Art of the Fugue’ by Bach, played on solo piano.” Robert is also a visiting professor of the history and philosophy of science at Tsinghua University in Beijing.

Theodore B. Robinson V’74 received the 2008 Meritorious Service Award from the American Veterinary Medical Association for the project he began eight years ago providing veterinary care on Native American reservations, and in which PennVet students participate.

John F. Sopko C’74 has joined the international law firm Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld LLP as a partner in its Washington office. Previously, he was chief counsel for oversight and investigations for the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Dr. Michael C. Coleman Gr’77 is a professor of English at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland. He is a dual citizen there and of Ireland. Two years ago he published his third book in the U.S.: American Indians, the Irish and Government Schooling: A Comparative Study. In March 2008 he was named “Teacher of the Year” at his university. Last October he was appointed professor; he became a tenured lecturer in 1972 (most members of European faculties are lecturers). In March he was named “Teacher of the Year in Intercultural Environment” by his university’s student union.

Dr. Christian E. Newcomer V’77 is associate provost for animal research and resources and associate professor of comparative medicine at Johns Hopkins University. He was recently appointed executive director of the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care.

Dr. Vanessa Northington Gamble M’78 G’84 Gr’87 joined the faculty at George Washington University in 2007 as a University Professor of medical humanities. In March she was honored by the American Medical Student Association with a Women Leaders in Medicine Award for her “demonstrated leadership and lifelong commitment to the field of medicine and public health.” Specializing in equity and justice in healthcare, she chaired the committee that led the successful campaign to obtain an apology in 1997 from President Clinton for the infamous U.S. Public Health Syphilis Study at Tuskegee.

He was also named a “Top 10 Professor of the Year” in 2007 and 2008 by the national German student magazine Unicum Beruf. Bob’s most recent article, “Is accounting at odds with corporate governance?”, was published in the European Journal of International Management in January.

These last years I’m also serving as president and CEO, so I have reduced my clinical time by half and changed my focus to running it as a business, but managing it as a practice. It’s great here: the shore is minutes away, Philadelphia (Penn) about an hour, and New York, where we’re from, about two hours. Rick Ohye C’85 writes, “I went to medical school at Ohio State University: I stayed for my general- and thoracic-surgery residencies before going to the University of Michigan in 1998 for a fellowship in pediatric-cardiovascular surgery. However, most importantly, my wife, Bonnie, and I have two loving daughters, Maddie (eight) and Lily (seven), and a rescued Border Collie mix, Gina (three). Joseph E. Ingoldsby GLA’89 runs Landscape Mosaics. A recent exhibition was Requiem for a Drowning Landscape at the New York Hall of Science, which showed the impact of climate change on the New England coastline; pictures were in Orionmagazine (March-April). Vanishing Landscapes and Endangered Species will be at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum this May and June; its focus is the Midwest and New England. Also in June, “a monumental earthwork, called Endangered Species, is to be completed in Illinois, following the ancient tradition of animal-effigy mounds.” He is planning another installation, Spirits of Whooping Cranes, for this summer. A recent publication is the monograph Vanishing Landscapes: The Atlantic Salt Marsh (Leonardo journal, April).

Lolita K. Jackson EAS’89 writes, “As reunion chair I am looking forward to seeing all of my classmates. We had several successful pre-reunion events in various cities around the country, kicked off by a great Los Angeles event in November with our last event taking place in New York in April 23, the Thursday before Penn Relays. Scott Kurashige C’90 has received the 2008 Albert J. Beveridge Award from the American Historical Association for The Shifting Grounds of Race: Black and Japanese Americans in the Making of Multiethnic Los Angeles (Princeton University Press). He is taking a residential fellowship for this academic year from the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History at Harvard University.

Emily Levin Mendell W’90 lives in Wallingford, Pa., with her husband, Dave Mendell C’90, who teaches fourth grade and two sons, Noah (11) and Chase (nine). She has been head of communications for the National Venture Capital Association for the last five years, and is also a regular contributor to Babble.com and iParenting.com, and co-authors a daily blog www.mothersofbrothers.com.

Charisse Y. Tang W’95 and her husband, Timothy, are very happy to update classmates about the birth of their fifth child, Joshua (8 lbs., 21 inches), on April 13, 2008. He joined his three older sisters, Grace (seven), Christine (five), and Mary (three), and older brother Paul (two). Charisse writes that she truly enjoys raising her children as a full-time mother. Timothy continues to work at Hughes Network Systems as a marketing director. Dr. David Casarett GM’99 is an associate professor in the geriatric-medicine division at Penn Medicine and staff physician and director of the palliative-care service at the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He will lead an initiative established late last year by the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs to improve the quality of healthcare throughout its system that veterans receive at the end of life.

B. Lafe Metz L’99 was promoted in February to shareholder of the Pittsburgh law firm of Buchanan, Ingersoll & Rooney PC. He specializes in state and local tax litigation.

Christopher Mora L’99 is a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve JAG Corps. In Oct. 2007 he accepted an active-duty recall appointment as the Navy’s military legal counsel for installations in Louisiana. In May last year he was awarded the U.S. Navy’s commendation and achievement medals for his work on a real-estate partnership to “redevelop Naval Support Activity New Orleans as Federal City.” And in June he graduated from the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, R.I., with a master’s in national security and strategic studies. He writes that he was “selected to the New Orleans Regional Leadership Institute Class of 2009 and the New Orleans CityBusiness Leadership in Law Class of 2009, as one of the top 50 attorneys in the greater New Orleans region.”

Karen Plotkin C’99 married Roben Farzad on Oct. 26 in Richmond, Va. They were honored to have close friend Rabbi Annie Tucker C’99 co-officiate at the ceremony. Carolyn Faulkner-Beitzel GEd’01, [email protected], in November received a PhD in professional-studies education (specializing in K-16 online teaching and learning) from Capella University. She found that teachers, without training in online pedagogy, struggle to transform their practices from the brick-and-mortar to the online classroom. Currently an instructional coach at Academy Park High School in Folcroft, Pa., she is pursuing a K-12 principal certificate from Neumann College. She also teaches education and social-science courses at several colleges and universities, both traditional and online, and is a distance-learning consultant through her company, DLC.

Gina M. LaPlaca C’01 recently joined Verizon New Jersey as director, state-government affairs, after a three-year stint as deputy budget director and associate general counsel for the majority office of the New Jersey General Assembly. She graduated from Fordham University’s law school in 2004.

Abhishek Sharma EAS’03 married Nidhi Mehrotra in the Raj Palace in Jaipur, India, on Feb. 26. “Although I am from Dubai, we figured we will have a destination wedding with all our friends. Chris Stanchak WEv’03 writes, “An article in the winter edition of MBA Jungle gives a ‘play-by-play’ look inside the life of an entrepreneur as I manage the growth of TicketLeap.com, Web-based event-ticketing for small- to medium-sized events and organizers.” He founded the company at Penn; it was launched from within the Wharton venture-initiation-program incubator.

Andrew Olsen W’05 married Sarah Scott Nu’06 on Sept. 26 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Doylestown, Pa., followed by a reception at the Aldie Mansion. They met in April 2003 and got engaged at the BioPond Garden on campus in July 2007. Kathryn Cunningham Hall C’08 M’12 founded the non-profit Power Up Gambia in 2006, after she had volunteered at the Sulayman Junkung General Hospital there and was appalled by its lack of electricity. In March she helped in the setting up of solar panels at a hospital in Bwiam (www.powerupgambia.org.

Dr. Casey Kurtz V’08 has joined the French Creek Veterinary Hospital in Pottstown and the County Companion Animal Hospital in Morgantown, Pa.
