Hon. William T. Coleman Jr. C’41 Hon’76 is a senior partner and the senior counselor in the Washington office of the international law firm of O’Melveny & Myers. He had served as Secretary of Transportation in the Ford administration, and was a former president of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. In February he was honored at a Washington symposium in tribute to him, hosted by Pennsylvania’s U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, and in commemoration of Black History Month.

Frederick Rankin MacFadden Jr. Gr’61, a professor emeritus at Coppin State University in Baltimore, wrote the story “I Got You Now, Tom Sawyer,” which was accepted for the April conference of the Western division of the Conference on Christianity and Literature. It is about “a homeless, mentally challenged woman, an aficionado of Injun Joe; she pursues a boy, whom she identifies as the witness that testified against her hero in the novel.” He also wrote an autobiographical paper: “To Draw the Tadpole, Then the Frog: A Demonstration School for My Expanding Aquarium.” It traces his intellectual growth “in the culture of knowledge, chiefly through the bio-spiritual studies of man and man’s zoological stewardship connection with creation.” By request, that paper was submitted to the Rowan University library.

Murray A. Greenberg C’65 L’68 has joined the Miami law firm of Stearns, Weaver, Miller, Weissler, Alhadeff & Sitterson as of counsel in the land-use, environment, and government-affairs department. Previously he was county attorney for Miami-Dade County. He serves as an adjunct professor at the law schools of the University of Miami and the Florida International and St. Thomas universities, teaching state and local government, taxation, and election law; he is also certified as a mediator and an arbitrator. With a career that “has focused on all aspects of local-government law,” he is special counsel to the Miami-Dade County School Board. Robert Temple C’65 writes that he and his wife wrote The Sphinx Mystery, published in February in the USA by Inner Traditions. They live in England, where they also “run a theatrical-design archive, a Romanian cultural foundation, a Green-cement company (holding international patents on a new process with the potential to reverse climate change by producing cement with zero-carbon emissions; the cement industry being the worst air-polluter of any industry), and a new music mini-label which has just issued ‘The Art of the Fugue’ by Bach, played on solo piano.” Robert is also a visiting professor of the history and philosophy of science at Tsinghua University in Beijing.

Dr. Michael C. Coleman Gr’77 is a professor of English at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland. He is a dual citizen there and of Ireland. Two years ago he published his third book in the U.S.: American Indians, the Irish and Government Schooling: A Comparative Study. In March 2008 he was named “Teacher of the Year” at his university. Last October he was appointed professor; he became a tenured lecturer in 1972 (most members of European faculties are lecturers). In March he was named “Teacher of the Year in Intercultural Environment” by his university’s student union.
Dr. Christian E. Newcomer V’77 is associate provost for animal research and resources and associate professor of comparative medicine at Johns Hopkins University. He was recently appointed executive director of the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care.

A recent exhibition was Requiem for a Drowning Landscape at the New York Hall of Science, which showed the impact of climate change on the New England coastline; pictures were in Orionmagazine (March-April). Vanishing Landscapes and Endangered Species will be at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum this May and June; its focus is the Midwest and New England. Also in June, “a monumental earthwork, called Endangered Species, is to be completed in Illinois, following the ancient tradition of animal-effigy mounds.” He is planning another installation, Spirits of Whooping Cranes, for this summer. A recent publication is the monograph Vanishing Landscapes: The Atlantic Salt Marsh (Leonardo journal, April).

Christopher Mora L’99 is a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve JAG Corps. In Oct. 2007 he accepted an active-duty recall appointment as the Navy’s military legal counsel for installations in Louisiana. In May last year he was awarded the U.S. Navy’s commendation and achievement medals for his work on a real-estate partnership to “redevelop Naval Support Activity New Orleans as Federal City.” And in June he graduated from the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, R.I., with a master’s in national security and strategic studies. He writes that he was “selected to the New Orleans Regional Leadership Institute Class of 2009 and the New Orleans CityBusiness Leadership in Law Class of 2009, as one of the top 50 attorneys in the greater New Orleans region.”

She found that teachers, without training in online pedagogy, struggle to transform their practices from the brick-and-mortar to the online classroom. Currently an instructional coach at Academy Park High School in Folcroft, Pa., she is pursuing a K-12 principal certificate from Neumann College. She also teaches education and social-science courses at several colleges and universities, both traditional and online, and is a distance-learning consultant through her company, DLC.
