Marjorie Oberman C’76 writes, “I am a psychotherapist, living in Versailles, France for the past 21 years. When I married a Frenchman, I did not at first realize to what extent I had married a new culture. Out of my own experience of adaptation I have been able to help many other Americans deal with the emotional rollercoaster of choosing to live in this beautiful country. For the past decade, I have been privileged to also work with American university students who have come to France for study-abroad programs. Students will come here excited to have the ‘time of their lives,’ and then are surprised by what I call the ‘unforeseen opportunities for emotional growth’ which await them. Most often, the students I counsel are confronting a range of emotional and mental-health issues they brought with them to France, which are then exacerbated by difficulties in adjusting to the culture. In recent years, I have included working on Skype with working in person; at first I worked on Skype for students who returned home or went to study or work in another country. Now I have expanded to work with students in different regions of France. I also have discovered that this generation, with their intense programs of study, work, and travel, sometimes prefers to work on Skype even when they are within easy travel time from Paris to my home. I can be reached at honestemotions@orange.fr and am listed in the information book at the American Embassy in Paris.”

Alice Sheplar C’76 writes, “In 2008-09, I took 12 months off to travel to Asia and other parts of the US to find ‘inner peace’ and to renew ‘my passion for life.’ There is sweetness in doing nothing. Then I moved from Savannah, where I have lived for 20 years, to Washington. I am now working again, in healthcare IT at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where I am humbled by the selflessness and courage of the wounded warriors. Sounds like Eat, Pray, Love? Contact me at aws1976@alumni.upenn.edu.”

77  Joan Tabb-Waisbein C’77, Foster City, Calif., writes, “My husband, David Waisbein, and I just launched our son, Daniel, to Pratt to realize his dream, since six, of becoming a car designer. Good for him, looks like he’s truly on his professional trajectory. Now, back to my career. While he was busy separating from us, rather than have my feelings hurt continually, I put my corporate-business brain back in gear and set up two community-employment networks, putting 100+ people back to work during this tough economy. In doing so, I realized I had the material for a book, which is now out, Great in 8: Job Seeking Skills, available on Amazon. I have built a career-coaching practice around it, developing and managing careers for back-to-work parents, unemployed professionals, career transitioners, executives looking for career reinvention or reinvigoration, and college and post-graduate students. Check out my site www.greatin8coaching.com; I am always happy to get back in touch with old Penn friends, too.”
