Grace K. Coulson NTS’40 writes that a reunion was held last October of graduates of the three-year nursing program of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, which closed in 1978. “We celebrated the 120 years of instruction. There was a breakfast, a tour of the Nursing School, and a trolley tour of all the campus. Three nurses of the HUP unit, the 20th General Hospital in India, were honored by a standing ovation by the over 300 graduate nurses. The next reunion is scheduled for 2011.”

Antoinette Walker Martignoni FA’41 is an octogenarian artist. At 88, she is a great-grandmother who found her life’s work at age 73! An artist in the Human Potential movement, she paints “Inner Portraits,” having drawn more than 700 over the past 15 years. She exhibited some portraits in Newtown, Conn., last August, and is planning a book, to be published this year, tentatively called “You Are Seen.”
Michael C. Rainone L’41 was recently honored last year by the Philadelphia Bar Association, “In recognition of many years of distinguished service to the community and to the profession in the finest tradition of the Philadelphia lawyer.”

Tony Franco W’49 reports that he was again chosen to represent the U.S. in the Gardnar Mulloy Cup matches for 80-and-over tennis players. Matches were held in Turkey, and the U.S. team came in second to Austria, after beating Ireland, Sweden, South Africa, and Australia. Then he won the singles and doubles titles in the World Individual Championships the following week. He thinks that Wallace Johnson and Whitey Graham would be proud.

Alan Miles Ruben C’53 G’56 L’56, emeritus professor of law at Cleveland State University, spoke on “New and Developing Arbitration issues in the Interpretation of Collective Bargaining Agreements” at the ABA annual meeting last year, where he was also inducted as a fellow in the College of Labor and Employment Attorneys.
John Weichsel C’53 WG’56 was honored by his town, Southington, Conn., for serving 40 years as its town manager. It is believed to be the longest tenure in the country for a city manager.

Robert M. Rosenthal W’60 writes, “The Spirit of America Tour,which I created after 9/11, has now completed its 75th show for America’s Armed Forces. The concerts have such great stars as Charlie Daniels, Clint Black, Lorrie Morgan, Patty Loveless, and the Oak Ridge Boys. Our morale building shows have touched the lives of over a million members of the Armed Services by bringing headline entertainers to their bases to do these shows and to show their support for the military. This year I received a certificate of appreciation from the Secretary of Defense and the Patriotic Civilian Service Award from the Department of the Army. I have also been honored by the Freedom Foundation of Valley Forge with their national service award. This has been the most fulfilling thing I have done, and every day starts with the realization that America’s great treasure are the men and women who serve their country in the military.”

To celebrate this sense (illusion?) of freedom, Kay and I traveled to Antarctica in late December (with Penn Travel). This year will provide an opportunity for introspection and reflection, which is fine with me after 16 years of law practice and 26 years in retail.”
Fred MacFadden Gr’61 writes, “In 2006, my papers, all read by proxies, were severally presented at Pepperdine University (Calif.), Xavier University (La.), Anderson College (S.C.), Abilene Christian University (Tex.), and St. Francis College (N.Y.). These papers, part of my ongoing project in pursuit of the father figure in literature and theology, contributed to various regional gatherings of the Conference on Christianity and Literature. Steve Stovall W’62 ASC’63 writes, “I am in my 11th year teaching marketing courses in the business school of Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo. In fall 2005 I was also appointed faculty athletic representative. I looked for any representatives from Penn at the NCAA convention the next January, but couldn’t find any! I have now run in 11 cross-country meets (here, at Fort Lewis), ‘informally representing the University of Pennsylvania.’ Do I have any athletic eligibility left? I wear an ancient PENN shirt in every race or triathlon I enter. In fact last May I set an age-group course record in a 5K race in Colorado Springs, wearing my ancient PENN singlet, of course. I do my best to represent Penn in all the races I run. Our youngest son is now off to college, so my wife, Denise, and I run our sheep ranch in Hesperus outside of Durango.”

Bob Anthony W’70 was the only Republican, out of nine statewide races in Oklahoma last November, to win election (with 59%): He was re-elected to a fourth, six-year term on the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, which regulates energy and transportation in the state. He was first elected to the commission in 1988, the first Republican in 60 years; in 2000 he again set a record, receiving more votes than any candidate for statewide office in Oklahoma history.
Arthur H. Keeney III WG’70, president and CEO of the East Carolina Bank, is current chair of the North Carolina Banker’s Association. He also serves on the boards of the North Carolina Aquarium Society and the Pungo District Hospital.
Sam Schwartz GCE’70, New York, is president and CEO of Sam Schwartz PLLC, a multi-disciplinary traffic and transportation engineering and planning firm with offices in New York, New Jersey, and Canada. Also known as “Gridlock Sam,” under which name he writes a daily traffic column in The New York Daily News, he has become the Dear Abby of traffic; last year he wrote an op-ed in The New York Times that evaluated the conflicts between bike riders and pedestrians sharing public space. He has also been hired to provide transportation recommendations for the Central Delaware River Waterfront in Philadelphia, in coordination with Penn Praxis. Sam lives in Manhattan with his wife, Daria, and children David and Deena.

That follows a few years updating Internet marketing and technology for the national headquarters of Big Brothers Big Sisters. She lives in Philadelphia with her husband, Gilbert (an ER doctor at Graduate Hospital). “It’s a year of big news: daughter, Alexis (an ER doc like Dad, finishing residency at Cooper Hospital in Camden and headed for an ultrasound fellowship in New York), married Benjamin K. Langsfeld C’02 last October; and son, Josh Palley C’05, a healthcare consultant, is engaged to wed Julie Berstein C’03 in the fall, after her graduation from Temple Law.”
Terry Pranses W’72 writes that his company, Pranses Research Services, in Hoboken, N.J., provided a study, “Ethnic Eating and Foreign Flavors,” for the International Association of Culinary Professionals. Representing the hands-on experiences of over 400 member chefs, restaurateurs, food writers, and test-kitchen directors, it gave insights on what flavors and ingredients are “hot” today and in the near future. Terry’s firm has also been active with many other food studies, along with work with non-profits and in the real estate industry. A highlight last year for him was getting to “informally host” club night at The Penn Club of New York; he spoke on how marketing influences which foods arrive at supermarkets and restaurants.

Ann Martin Dapice Nu’74 Gr’80 writes, “After completing my Ph.D., I served in teaching and administration at Widener University in Chester, Pa., and the Penn State Abington campus, and then returned to Tulsa, Okla., in 1990. Here, as a Lenape-Cherokee, I became active in the American-Indian community and began teaching courses in Native American studies on Oklahoma campuses, as well as the courses in social sciences I had previously taught. I also began work in American-Indian recruitment and retention analysis and Native-American studies development on campuses. As director of education and research at the Indian organization T. K. Wolf, Inc., I have worked in an unofficial role at Penn for the past four years with American-Indian students, interested faculty, staff, administrators, the Greenfield Intercultural Center, Development and Alumni Relations, and Indian alumni to develop Native American programs and resources for Indian students on campus. In June 2005, with the committed work of the School of Nursing and others, we held the ‘Summit on American Indian Health Care, Bridging the Canyon: Strategies to Reduce Health Inequities for American Indians,’ the first-ever Indian-health conference at an Ivy League campus. He is a fifth-grade student at Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia. I have served for eight years as a member of the Board of the Justinian Society of Philadelphia, an organization of Italian-American attorneys; currently I am treasurer of the Justinian Foundation, which awards scholarships to law students. For the last six years, I have served on the hearing committee of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court Disciplinary Board. Hope A. Comisky L’77, a partner in the labor and employment group of the Philadelphia law firm of Pepper Hamilton LLP, in January became professional-responsibility counsel for the firm, advising it and its lawyers on ethical issues, and is in charge of legal-ethics education.

James M. Morris L’77 has been appointed general counsel of the Farm Credit System Insurance Corporation, based in McLean, Va. It guarantees the timely payment on bonds and debt obligations issued by the Farm Credit System banks, which have approximately $154 billion in assets. Previously he was counsel to the chair of the Farm Credit Administration, which supervises the banks.

The company operates in the U.S., Mexico, and Panama. After 10 years in Richmond, Va., Ted and his family will have relocated to Kansas City, Mo., by this spring.

LoBue W’80 G’89 writes, “In October I received my doctoral degree in management (Doctor Oeconomaie) from the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland; my dissertation is entitled ‘Agency assurance: the role of the audit committee in corporate governance.’ Effective in October, I was appointed dean of the faculty of the School of International Business at Reutlingen University in Germany: I have been professor of accounting and finance there since 1999. Our school holds the No. 1 rankings for business schools and programs in all small and mid-sized universities in Germany. For each of the last five years, we had three or four German-American Fulbright scholars. I thoroughly love teaching, and find it so much fun to keep the classroom an exciting place to learn. Training adults in human-resources management was great, but teaching elementary-school kids is truly invigorating. Dave and I also keep very busy with our three great kids, Dan, Zachary, and Jen. He and his wife Gina, “also own and operate one of the most successful Togos-Baskin Robbins restaurants in California.” Their son Jonathon is a senior at the University of California at Irvine.

Michael will join his siblings Vincent Jr. and Serena and his Mom and Dad for a visit to College Green on May 12 for the 25th Reunion of the Class of 1982. Vince is president of Fair Oaks Anesthesia Associates, in Fairfax, Va., which employs over 100 anesthesia providers and support staff. [His] stirring talk, “Rumi’s Teachings on Peace and Harmony,” actually made front page news in the major newspaper.”

Charles S. Marion C’86 W’86 L’89 is a partner with the Philadelphia law firm of Pepper Hamilton LLP who specializes in complex-commercial and intellectual-property litigation. In December he was elected vice chair of the Philadelphia Bar’s federal-courts committee for 2007 and chair for 2008. As vice chair he will be responsible for the Federal Bench-Bar Conference this spring, which provides the interchange of ideas, educates the bar members in court practice, and encourages civility in the courts. He often leads investigative teams for the Bar’s Commission on Judicial Selection and Retention.
Randall Sell C’86 G’88 has been appointed an associate professor of community health at Drexel University; previously he was an assistant professor of public health at Columbia University. He specializes in the methodology of sampling sexual orientation.

Eugene A. Bolt Jr. C’88 GPU’01 co-wrote The University of the Arts; published last year it is the first published history of that school and its predecessor institutions in 130 years. Part of the Arcadia Campus History Series, it presents for the first time images from that university’s archives and other Philadelphia institutions. Gayle Meyers C’92 is very excited to announce that she is engaged to marry Hillel Cooper; the August wedding will take place in Israel. She has lived in Jerusalem for the last two years, working for Search for Common Ground, an organization that tries to bridge gaps between Israelis, Palestinians, and others in conflict. She has gotten involved with the local English-speaking theater scene and recently played the lead role in Proof. “Hillel is a Canadian who has lived in Israel all his life. He works in software for a cellphone company; in his previous career, he did what he calls ‘a lot of dangerous stuff’ in the army and the police.” They will make their home in Tel Aviv.

I completed my fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School in 2003. He completed his fellowship in orthopedic surgery, sports medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in 2001. Erica Fisher C’03 and Steven Battle EE’03 are planning their wedding for September in New York at the Pegasus Suite at The Rainbow Room—marking seven years together since meeting at Penn. The best man will be Steven’s twin brother, Robert Battle EAS’03, and Santosh Vardhana C’02 will be a groomsman. Steven obtained his master’s in microelectronic circuits from Columbia University, and is now designing computer processors for IBM. Erica acquired a master’s from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, and has accepted a position at the Philadelphia Museum of Art working on exhibitions in their Modern and Contemporary Art department. They live in New York, despite their respective commutes, and they can be reached at <[email protected]> by any alumni that wish to catch up.”
Lara Hoffman G’03 GPU’03 spent last summer working on human-rights cases (homelessness legal policy, especially former foster youth) with Paul Hoffman, the former director of ACLU Southern California, and with Paul Freese, director of litigation and advocacy at Public Counsel; this was funded by the law firm Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal LLP.
Judah Lebow C’03 and Kelila Jaffe C’03 are happy to announce their engagement. No date has yet been set. They live in Honolulu, where he is an environmental scientist and she teaches archaeology and anthropology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Hawaii Pacific University.
Mark Levitch G’03 Gr’07 wrote Panthéon de la Guerre: Reconfiguring a Panorama of the Great War, which was published last year by the University of Missouri Press. The Panthéon is a very large panorama, that is now in Kansas City, Mo.
Piper Julie Silverman C’03 G’03 married Kevin M. Hughes on Sept. 3 at the Rincon Beach Club in Santa Barbara, Calif. Alumni attending included her father, Joel M. Silverman W’69, and uncle Stanley L. Silverman W’64. The bridal party included Kelila Jaffe C’03, Judah Lebow C’03, and Sarah L. Thompson C’03. Other alumni present included Katherine L. Peer C’03 and Stuart J. Holzer C’69. Piper and Kevin are enjoying their new life in North Carolina.

Steve Ressler G’04, Washington, was on the cover of Federal Computer Week magazine (Oct. 9 issue) as he had received the Rising Star Award, which recognizes future leaders in federal IT service. This was for his work as an IT auditor for the Department of Homeland Security and as co-founder of Young Government Leaders (www.youngovernmentleaders.org), a professional organization for young federal employees. He lives in Washington, and would love to hear from any fellow Quakers at <[email protected]>.
