He consults on this topic and is responsible for two industrial post-doctoral researchers in New York state, with whom he coordinates by tele-conferencing from his home in Copley, Ohio, where he also does volunteer work for the University of Akron Research Foundation. He has also been granted a recent patent, approximately his 210th, on a phosphorus-based flame retardant which is in commercial evaluation for circuit-board applications. He also advises on environmental aspects of plastics and chemicals.

Dr. Eugene N. Myers W’54, a Distinguished Professor and an emeritus chair of otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh, lectured to the American Society of Geriatric Otolaryngology in May on “Deciding on when to operate on the elderly patient.” He also participated in the XIX World Congress of Otolaryngology in June, and received a Gold Medal from the International Federation of Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Societies for his work for the federation and international otolaryngology.

Recently he was elected to the board of the Eastern Psychological Association and was invited to the editorial board of Neurobehavioral HIV Medicine. In August he received the 2009 Urie Bronfenbrenner Award for Lifetime Contribution to Developmental Psychology in the Service of Science and Society from the American Psychological Association.

An associate governor of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, in June he received an honorary fellowship for his professional achievements and his commitment to that university and Israel. He has directed preservation work on the 1976 restoration of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, followed in 1980 by the restoration and conversion of the Bellevue Stratford Hotel, as well as work on Independence Hall, the Academy of Music, Girard College, the Reading Terminal Train Shed, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Philadelphia City Hall. He also led the restoration projects for the Pennsylvania Capitol Building in Harrisburg, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Later that year I transferred to UPenn, and 32 years later his brother ran into my brother in New York. The rest is history. It was like we were never apart. I highly recommend this to all recent alums: if you’re lucky, your parents will still let you lick the spoon when they bake. After four months of unemployment and licking spoons, I decided to go to med school and am now enrolled at Temple University in Philly. I’m also still freelancing occasionally for National Geographic magazine and recently had a piece in the September issue.” 

07 | Francis M. Hult Gr’07 has been appointed to the editorial board of the International Journal of the Sociology of Language.

Joanna A. Johnston C’07 and Jonathan R. Stott C’07 L’10 became engaged in the spring, and will marry in August 2010 in Philadelphia. She is an associate at the Civitas Group, a Washington-based advisory and investment firm that specializes in national security, and he is a third-year law student at Penn.

Stefanie M. Lopacinski SW’07, [email protected], received a doctorate of human sexuality and an EdD (doctor of education) from the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in San Francisco.

08 | Kerith Finegan Nu’08 married Jay Hiatt C’06 on April 25 at Woodland Presbyterian Church in West Philadelphia; the reception took place at a Victorian home in East Oak Lane. Bridesmaids included Janine van Vliet C’08, Camille Hardiman C’07, Amani Hirr C’07, and Stefanie Lenz C’08; the groomsmen included Ryan Strash EAS’06. Several alumni also attended the celebration. “Jay and Kerith met in 2004 at a Bible study through InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, and started dating after he asked her out on the steps of an Engineering building. They honeymooned in Belize and just bought a house in West Philadelphia; she is a registered nurse and he is a high-school teacher.”
