’48 | Dr. Robert Langs C’48 writes, “I am a physician and psychoanalyst and the author of 45 books for the profession and general public. My most recent book came off-press in October: Beyond Yahweh and Jesus: Bringing Death’s Wisdom to Faith, Spirituality, and Psychoanalysis. The publisher is Roman & Littlefield. There is much in this book that is quite original and promising for both the secular and religious individual. You can go to the publisher’s website and read what they say and examine reviews. The book is also offered on the Amazon and Barnes & Noble websites.”
Liz Smith CW’48, Waterloo, Ont., writes, “Life speeds along, and suddenly I’m 79. My husband, Philip H. Smith Jr. Gr’60, who was also 79, died suddenly in his sleep in 2006. And last March my MD said I could no longer live alone in the wonderful, big old house we’d lived in since 1971. Fortunately, neighbours found someone who loved the house, from the street and then from the inside, so we happily sold it to him. Great to find someone who loves it. [I now live] just two blocks from my old house, in the same area where I always did my shopping, so it is wonderfully convenient. My children are all busy and independent. Thea, my eldest, is a writer and just finishing her second novel; she is married to a professor of philosophy at St. Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Jennifer, the middle one, teaches Grade 3 in Scarborough, really part of Toronto. Philip is a computer guru in Virginia, outside Washington. I do wish one of them lived closer. Once school begins I don’t see much of Jen, even though she’s the closest. I have a suite of two rooms and kitchenette. I have my piano, guitar, television, VCR, and DVD player. And in the bedroom I have my office with computer, printer, and even a fancy new typewriter, which is nearly a computer. Why a typewriter? To write to my few friends not on email.”

’50 | L. Charles Scipione Ar’50 was honored recently for his 28 years of service as an elected official on the board of supervisors of Westtown township, Chester County, Pa. The state bridge, on Rte. 926 & Westtown Road, was dedicated in his name, the L. Charles Scipione bridge.
’52 | Janice A. Oser CW’52 publishes the Internet magazine www.Eldercountry.com. She profiled Hon. Norma L. Shapiro L’51, senior judge of the U.S. District Court, in the September issue (it remains online and is available in the archives). Essays, mostly humorous, by her husband, Alan S. Oser C’52, formerly of The New York Times, are a regular feature of the e-magazine (also archived). ’54 | Joan Lepow Steinberg Ed’54 lives in Bala Cynwyd, Pa. Her late husband was Alan A. Steinberg ME’54,, who died in Dec. 2006. Close friends of theirs anonymously donated $1 million in his memory to the Abramson Cancer Center at Penn to establish the Alan Steinberg Scholars in Cancer Research Fund.
’56 | Tom McGraw C’56 was recently inducted into the Wall of Fame of the Mining and Mechanical Institute in Freeland, Pa., in the Academic Achievement category.
1960s
’60 | Robert M. Rosenthal W’60 is founder of the Spirit of America Tour, a non-profit which takes “top entertainers to military installations around the nation: 92 shows to American military bases since its inception five and a half years ago.” Recently he received the Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service, the highest award given to civilians for their support of the military. He was joined at the ceremony by Charlie Daniels, of the Charlie Daniels Band, one of the principal groups involved in the Tour.
’62 | Hon. James J. Fitzgerald III C’62 writes that he “was appointed by Governor Edward G. Rendell C’65 Hon’00, and unanimously confirmed by the Pennsylvania Senate, to serve as an interim justice on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. I was vice president of my senior class, president of the Kite and Key Society, and rowed on the varsity crew for three years. After graduating from Villanova University School of Law in 1966, I served 12 years in the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office. In 1989, I was elected to the Philadelphia Common Pleas Court, where I served for 17 years. The last five years were as the administrative judge of the trial division, before being appointed to the state supreme court. I am married to Carol McCullough Fitzgerald CW’63, who is executive director of the Pennsylvania Society. We have three children and three grandchildren: one daughter is Melissa A. Fitzgerald C’87.”
’65 | Jill Norgren CW’65 recently published a biography of the first woman to run a full campaign for the U.S. presidency: Belva Lockwood: The Woman Who Would be President (New York University Press). She will shortly also publish a young-adult biography of Lockwood.
’67 | Marcus M. Diamond C’67 in September became vice president for development and alumni relations at the University of Vermont. Previously he had been chief advancement officer and secretary of Bryn Mawr College, near Philadelphia, since 1999.

Dr. Harry M. Rosen W’68 is chair of management at the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College, CUNY. In June he was elected board president of Care for the Homeless, a not-for-profit that provides care to about 10,000 homeless New Yorkers in 28 sites throughout the city; this month it will open in the Bronx, a shelter for 180 homeless women.
’69 | Dr. Justin Lavin C’69 M’75 GM’79 received the outstanding clinical-faculty award from the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. He serves as professor of obstetrics and gynecology there and chair of maternal-fetal medicine at Children’s Hospital Medical Center of Akron.
Patrick M. Norton C’69 in July joined Steptoe & Johnson LLP as a partner in its international department in the Washington office. Previously he was a partner at O’Melveny & Myers LLP, and head of its Beijing office. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations.

’70 | Charles C. Coyne W’70 has joined the business and finance department of the law firm of Obermayer, Rebmann, Maxwell & Hippel, LLP in Philadelphia.
D. Dodge Thompson C’70 has been made a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French minister of culture. Since 1980 he has been chief of exhibitions at the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
’72 | Jeff Otto EE’72 recently retired after 35 years at General Dynamics C4 Systems, formerly GTE Government Systems, in Massachusetts. He was director of army tactical-communications programs, following a career of developing and managing advanced-communication technologies for the military. He received a patent and numerous awards. He is looking forward to spending time pursuing his many outside interests and activities, as well as traveling with his wife of 34 years, Alison; they have two grown sons, and plan to split their time between their Massachusetts house and their summer cottage in Maine. Sharon Frant Brooks SAMP’73 writes that she is currently working as a contracting occupational therapist doing assessments for a health-care agency for highly specialized wheelchairs and assistive technology. In addition, she has been coordinating a resource center for students with differing learning needs in a Jewish congregational school in Lawrenceville, N.J. “All while going for an advanced graduate degree at the William Davidson Graduate School of Jewish Education at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York.” She had an article published last May in the national Advance for Occupational Therapy on providing rehabilitation services for aging Holocaust survivors. Her younger daughter, Danielle N. Brooks SW’09, is at Penn, in the School for Social Policy and Practice, after graduating with highest honors from Rutgers University. Her older daughter, Heather Rose Brooks, got both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Rutgers as well and is a special education teacher in Piscataway, N.J. Sharon recently visited Wladylowowo, Poland, where she worked as a therapist doing athlete assessments for Paralympic Table Tennis players at Poland’s Olympic Training Center.
Bonnie Fishbein Yedlin SAMP’73 and her husband, Mark, joyfully celebrated the marriage of their son Adam Yedlin C’04and Jennifer Ingerman C’05 on June 3. Adam is completing his final year at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and Jennifer is working on her doctorate in child psychology at St. John’s College, Queens.
’75 | Emily Chalef Sanders CW’75 is president and CEO of Sanders Financial Management, Inc., an Atlanta-based financial and investment management firm. Earlier this year it was included (for the third time) in “America’s Top Wealth Managers” by Wealth Manager magazine.

Andrea R. Kramer L’76 is an employment and labor lawyer who maintains a private practice in Bala Cynwyd, Pa. She was recently appointed chair of Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania. ’79 | Susan Komisar Hausman C’79 writes, “Though I spent the early part of my career as an accountant, I now write. I’ve had four essays published in the last year, including one in The Green Couch, the Kelly Writers House student publication. I write mostly about my life and experiences. I am finishing up a children’s book for use by therapists and educators about child sexual abuse (CSA), a cause near and dear to my heart. Last October I became a facilitator for Darkness To Light, a nonprofit based in Charleston, S.C., that is spreading its wings across the country and abroad. I lead a workshop for adults called ‘Stewards of Children,’ that educates on recognizing, preventing, and reacting responsibly to CSA. Originally intended for youth-serving organizations, we now also take the workshop to neighborhoods under the ‘Not In Our Backyard’ initiative. Darkness To Light’s premise is that it is adults who keep kids safe and that resolving CSA is an adult task. Neil Plakcy C’79 neil@mahubooks.com, wrote Mahu Surfer (Alyson Books), the second in his “Hawaii mystery series starring openly gay Honolulu homicide-detective Kimo Kanapa’aka. In this new book, Kimo heads to the north shore of Oahu to discover the killer of three surfers.” In 2006, Neil was granted tenure as a professor of English at Broward Community College in south Florida.

David H. Laufman C’80 has joined the Washington law office of Kelley Drye Collier Shannon as a partner; he specializes in white-collar criminal defense and internal corporate investigations, government ethics, and international trade controls. Previously he was assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia and chief of staff to the deputy attorney general.
Jan P. Levine C’80 joined the law firm of Pepper Hamilton LLP in July as a partner in its Philadelphia office. A commercial litigator, she was previously with Dechert LLP, where she was a litigation partner and chair of its health-law group.
Perry Ninger W’80 has been named director of finance of the International Erosion Control Association in Steamboat Springs, Colo. He had held various financial positions at American Express, including three years as treasurer in Canada. And he owned and managed a building-products company in Steamboat Springs, where he has lived since 2001.
Anthony C. Stanowski C’80 in December becomes president of the Healthcare Planning and Marketing Society of New Jersey. He continues at his “day job” position as an executive with Thomson Healthcare.
Dr. Douglas Swift M’80 GM’83, Philadelphia, is an anesthesiologist at Pennsylvania Hospital. Recently he was inducted into the Wall of Fame of Nottingham High School in Syracuse, N.Y.
’81 | Leslie Sutton-Smith C’81 wrote in late July, “After 11 years as registrar of the University of Tampa I have relocated to Cambridge, Mass., to become the registrar of the Harvard Law School. I will miss my friends and colleagues in Florida, but am excited about this wonderful opportunity and, actually quite ready to leave the Florida humidity behind. My daughter, Kelly Sutton-Skinner C’08, returned from her Penn junior spring in Barcelona just in time to hit the road and relocate north. We are now closer to my sister Mary Sutton-Smith C’81 and other siblings in the Northeast.”
’82 | Mark Banash C’82 writes, “I have left my director position with a Texas nanotechnology firm and have accepted the position of vice president for engineering with Nanocomp Technologies of Concord, N.H. It is poised to become a world leader for materials based on their long carbon nanotubes, producing yarns and other fiber-based products that have the advanced properties of nanotubes, but which can be handled and processed much like conventional textiles. I am also happy to be moving back to the Northeast, where I can experience seasons and good pizza.”

Col. Donna N. Hershey GNu’82 was recently appointed commander of the 2290th U.S. Army Hospital, a 500-person unit in Washington that is part of the Walter Reed Health Care System. Previously she was director of care and outcomes for the Masonic Village at Elizabethtown, Pa. She and her husband, Scott, have two children, Laura and Scott.
Barry Klein C’82 rejoined the law firm of Blank Rome LLP in August as a partner in the employment, benefits, and labor group, and based in its Philadelphia office; he had begun his legal career there. He previously served as partner in the employee-benefits and executive-compensation group of Ballard, Spahr, Andrews & Ingersoll LLP.
Robin Nydes W’82 emailed on Aug. 24, “Today at 4:56 p.m., Tilly gave birth to a healthy 9 lb. 1 oz. (I think) baby boy, Theo Tristram Jules Nydes. Mum is also doing very well. As to the name, Tilly started calling him Theo when he was the size of a thumbnail, so I pretty much had no say in the matter. Tristram, because he was born in Nantucket (while we were staying in the oldest house still operational on the island, built in 1724 for Josiah Coffin. Tristram Coffin was the head of one of the five, first non-Indian families who settled the island in the 1600s, and acted as the first governor). Juleswas the name of my father, who passed away in 1977.”

It’s about a 15-year-old girl, her mysterious guy, her Indian dad, her American mom, her evil aunt, and tons of drama and laughs. He is co-editor of Basic Border Econometrics (2006). “Border economics is a field in which unsubstantiated claims abound and references to accurate empirical analyses are infrequent. This book collects 10 studies on a diverse range of topics for which careful empirical analyses have been attempted.”
’89 | Adrian P. Kendall C’89 writes, “After leaving Penn, I earned my J.D. from the University of Maine School of Law, cum laude. While I intended to return to my native D.C., Maine’s people and natural beauty soon captured my heart! I have developed a commercial and international law practice in the Portland firm Norman, Hanson & DeTroy, LLC, where I have been a member since 2001. I married my Texas belle, Rebecca Blaesing, in 1997 and we have two sons, budding soccer star George Gustav (six) and ‘Destructo’ Kurt Fritz (three). Our 1830s farmhouse in Cumberland is a never-ending source of projects! I was appointed as a special adviser to the governor on his state trade mission to Germany in 2004, and briefed the governor prior to his trade mission to Europe in 2005. I’m pleased to say that my German studies at Penn have brought much personal satisfaction. After seven years of close cooperation with the German consulate in Boston, in May I was appointed honorary consul of the Federal Republic of Germany for Maine and New Hampshire, the first German honorary consul in New England. I still keep up my contacts with Penn and serve as chair of the secondary-schools committee in Maine, and also speak at high schools on the importance of foreign languages in career choices. In all of my ‘spare time’ I enjoy fishing, hiking, skiing, and winter mountaineering in Maine and the White Mountains. I have now completed ‘bracing’ mid-winter ascents of Mount Washington and Mount Katahdin—proof that older does not always mean wiser. It focused on his dual-degree background in law and clinical psychology, and how he uses techniques from both disciplines in his Beverly Hills-based family-law and child-custody litigation practice.
Greg Merrell C’90 W’90 writes, “I will be joining the Indiana Hand Center as a hand surgeon. I am on the board of Covalon Technologies, a Canadian biomedical company. We just had a second son in May, Connor James.”
Peter Rokkos C’90 W’90 emails that he is “extremely excited to be returning to work in Philadelphia as general counsel of Comcast Interactive Capital, a venture-capital fund focused on broadband, enterprise, and interactive technologies and affiliated with Comcast Corporation. It’s rather surreal being back in town every day after 17 years, and I’m looking forward to hitting all my old favorite spots. I’m hoping to have an excellent view of campus from my office at the top of the new Comcast Center when it opens up [in the spring] as the tallest skyscraper in Philadelphia. My wife, Diane, and I continue to have our hands full raising our three wonderful troublemakers: George (six), Catherine (three), and our newest addition, Alexander (one).”
’91 | Patti Pruett C’91 was promoted to Southeast franchise director for Sports Illustrated/SI.com last January. She has lived in Atlanta for almost three years and “absolutely loves it.” Any chance she gets, she tries to travel; in the last year, she has been to southern Spain, Mexico, Dubai, Kenya, and Tanzania.
’92 | Sandra Berkowitz Gaffner C’92 and her husband, Scott Gaffner, are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Diana Faye Gaffner, born July 9. They live in White Plains, N.Y., where Sandy is in private practice doing acupuncture and Scott does equity research at Lehman Brothers.

Niraj Gusani EAS’94 W’94 M’98 and Nehal Patel Gusani C’95 W’95 are pleased to announce that they have moved to the Harrisburg-Hershey area in Pennsylvania. He has joined the surgery faculty of the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center (focusing on gastrointestinal oncologic surgery) and she is senior business manager at the New World Pasta Corporation (makers of the brands Ronzoni, San Giorgio, and Prince). Most important, they are thrilled to announce the birth in March of their daughter, Anjali Niraj Gusani, the newest member of the family and of the Class of 2029.

Ken Merriam EAS’02 graduated from MIT in June with an MBA and a master’s in civil engineering. His wife, Jacqueline Bueso-Merriam C’02, spent part of last year as a research associate at MIT’s poverty-action laboratory, after having graduated from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government with a master’s in public administration, international development. Before, they had lived in Luxembourg for six months, while he was developing his thesis at Amazon.com’s European headquarters (a project with supply-chain optimization, for which he later received honorable mention from MIT). They traveled in Europe, including Greece and the Czech Republic. And they celebrated their third wedding anniversary on July 17 this year. Hillary Cohn C’04 married Daniel Aizenman on May 27 at the Red Lion in Boulder, Colo. Susan Francia C’04 G’04 won a gold medal at the 2007 Rowing World Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland. She stroked the U.S. women’s 8+ boat, which beat second-place Germany by over 2 seconds across the 2000m course. She walked on to the rowing team at Penn as a sophomore, and continued her rowing career after graduating. She hopes to represent the United States at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Sam Gabbita WG’04 and Jessica Kennedy W’04 are very excited to announce their engagement! He proposed on July 21, during a surprise weekend at the Meadowood Resort in the Napa Valley. Although their paths had crossed many times at Penn, they did not meet until they shared an elevator one day in New York. Jessica: “He was the most gentlemanly, sincere person. And I thought it was a great sign that he loved Bernese mountain dogs!” Sam: “I thought she was sparkly (if that is a word!) and brilliant. We met at the perfect time.” They live in San Francisco with their Cavalier King Charles puppy, Sunflower. Jessica recently left investment banking at Goldman Sachs to pursue a Ph.D. at Berkeley in organizational behavior. Sam is working in clean-technology venture capital at DFJ Element.

Abby Rosenstein C’04 married Daniel Remick C’03 on July 21 at the Cicada Restaurant in Los Angeles. Lesley Horton C’05 was featured in an article, “Fully Prepared for Anything,” in The New York Times (Aug. 5) on her apartment hunt last spring. She is at law school at New York University. She found a one-bedroom for $1,400 in Park Slope, “near where her boyfriend, Daven Johnson EAS’04 W’04, lives. ‘I never realized how proud a person could be of their credit report,’ she said. ‘[the landlord] said, “You look like a nice girl, and your credit score is better than mine.” So I am cheering inside. He didn’t really glance at the other documentation. He just told me the apartment gets really warm in the summer and a little nippy in the winter. It was pretty much anti-climactic.’ She painted some walls, added shelves, and filled them with mementos of Ghana, where she had studied. She bought a ladder and borrowed a drill from her boyfriend so she could install curtain rods. ‘That is the only time I dreaded having all those windows, because it took so long,’ she said. Daven, who now works in digital media, said the landlord was right about the summer heat. ‘I gave her a lot of trouble with not having air-conditioning.’ So she bought a window air-conditioner and installed it herself. ‘Daven was quite shocked at this,’ she said. “He said, ‘Call me if you need my help.’” But she didn’t. ‘Once you put the bracket in,’ she said, ‘it wasn’t that difficult.’”
