“It’s been a cool buildup,” singer/songwriter John Legend C’99 told the Gazette more than a year ago [“Making a Legend,” January/February 2005]. “We’re getting ready to make it real big.”

Looks as though the buildup is finally over.

On February 8, shortly after performing in the pre-game show for this year’s Super Bowl, Legend hit the Grammy Awards.

“In the least suspenseful award of the night, John Legend won the Grammy for best new artist,” began the Associated Press dispatch on the Grammys. In fact, Legend—known during his Penn days as John Stephens—picked up three Grammys, including best R&B album for Get Lifted and best male R&B vocal performance for the song “Ordinary People.” He had been nominated for no less than eight Grammys, which put him in a tie for the most with his friend and mentor Kanye West, the rapper and producer whom Legend met through his roommate (and West’s cousin), Devon Harris W’99.
