Dr. Philip J. Fialkow, C’56, Seattle, dean of the School of Medicine at the University of Washington and a leading figure in medical genetics and auto-immune diseases; October 1996 in western Nepal with his wife, Helen, and three others when their hiking camp was buried by a sudden snowstorm. He was a former chief of medicine at the Seattle V.A. center. In 1988, he received a merit award from the National Institutes of Health for his work on the genetic basis of leukemia. He led the Washington medical school to open clinics in Seattle that now serve 90% of King County’s population.

Dr. Kathelyn S. Steimer, Gr’79, Benicia, Calif., vice president for research at Chiron Vaccines; November 16, 1996. In 1984, together with colleagues, she played a major role in the first sequencing and cloning of HIV. She was a principal investigator or co-investigator of six federally or state-funded research projects studying HIV infection or vaccines. And she served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Immunotechnology and AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses.
