Dr. Laurence E. Earley, Bryn Mawr, Pa., former chair and professor emeritus of medicine in the Perelman School of Medicine; March 13. He served as the senior associate dean for international medical education, 1991–95. After leaving Penn, he was professor of clinical medicine at the University of North Carolina. He co-edited the textbook, Diseases of the Kidney. Past president of the American Association of Physicians, he was a former chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Paul Fussell, Medford, Ore., the Donald T. Regan Professor Emeritus of English; May 23. He joined the Penn faculty in 1983. He became an emeritus professor at Penn in 1994. He wrote many books, notably The Great War and Modern Memory (1975); about the myths of World War I and that war’s impact on literature, it won the National Book Critics Circle Award in Criticism that year and the National Book Award (1976). Abroad: British Literary Traveling Between the Wars (1980) has been described as a pioneering academic examination of travel literature. His Class: A Guide Through the American Status System (1983) was controversial and BAD: or, The Dumbing of America (1991) increased his status as a public curmudgeon, which he relished. Dr. Fussell also wrote Wartime: Understanding and Behavior in the Second World War (1989), which drew on his experience as an infantry lieutenant in Europe during World War II, and his memoir, Doing Battle: The Making of a Skeptic(1996). He appeared in the ABC documentary The Century: America’s Time (1999) and the PBS documentary The War (2007). Dr. Fussell, who had received a Guggenheim Award and a Lindback Award while at Rutgers University (1976-83), was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1977.

Hon. Louis Pollak, Philadelphia, a US District Court judge for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, who had served as dean of the Penn Law School, 1975-78; May 8. He joined the faculty as the first Albert M. Greenfield Professor of Human Relations and Law in 1974. Appointed to the federal bench in 1978, he retired from Penn, though he continued to teach a seminar as an adjunct professor until his death.
William Petrick, Philadelphia, retired assistant director for operations in the Penn Bookstore; May 12. He had worked there for over five decades, where part of his duties included ordering, distributing, and receiving back the thousands of academic gowns worn in the Commencement ceremonies.

Amos Vogel, New York, emeritus professor of film studies in the Annenberg School for Communication; April 24. Described in his New York Times obituary as having “exerted an influence on the history of film that few other non-filmmakers can claim,” Vogel created the pioneering film society Cinema 16 and cofounded the New York Film Festival before joining the Annenberg School’s faculty in 1973. He taught a variety of film courses at Penn—including a popular undergraduate introductory course informally known as “Monday Night at the Movies”—until retiring in 1991. His best known work is the seminal Film as a Subversive Art (1974), and he also wrote a children’s book, How Little Lori Visited Times Square(1963) that was illustrated by Maurice Sendak.
