Janice Smith Bers Ed’39 writes that she was named Fundraising Volunteer of the Year for 2001 by the greater Philadelphia chapter of the Association for Fundraising Professionals; she was nominated for her work by Abington Memorial Hospital, Jenkintown Day Nursery, Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel, the old camp council of the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania, and Penn.

1940s

Dr. Sidney Wertimer W’42, Clinton, N.Y., a professor emeritus of economics at Hamilton College, in September began his 50th-consecutive year in the classroom, teaching one course in financial accounting.

Jacques Levine W’43 celebrated his 80th birthday with all his children, Harold Levine W’67, Alan Levine W’70, Minna Levine OT’72, and Dr. David Levine M’77, and his eight grandchildren including Rachel Levine SW’01 and Eric Levine C’01. The family gathered on Labor Day weekend at the Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, N.Y. Jacques continues to be active in Middletown Footwear and serves on the boards of the Orange County (N.Y.) Land Trust and the Gomez Hill House Foundation.

Edward W. Madeira Jr. C’49 L’52, a partner and chair emeritus of the Philadelphia-based law firm of Pepper Hamilton LLP, in August was appointed chair of the ABA’s Commission on the 21st Century Judiciary, which is charged with identifying methods to diffuse the increasing partisan efforts to control state court judiciaries. He has previously served as chair of the ABA’s Commission on Separation of Powers and Judicial Independence and its Commission on State Judicial Selection Standards.

1950s

Dr. Madeleine M. Joulli� G’50 Gr’53, the Class of 1970 Professor of Chemistry at the University, in August received the 2002 Arthur C. Cope Senior Scholar Award from the American Chemical Society for “her work designing and constructing compounds useful in fields ranging from medicine to forensics.” A colleague who nominated her for the award noted she is particularly distinguished for her pioneering, ongoing research with didemnins, compounds isolated from marine animals such as sea squirts and which show anti-cancer properties. Dr. Joulli� joined Penn’s faculty in 1953; she was profiled in “Alumni Profiles,” Gazette May-June 2001, for other of her recent achievements.

Arnold Zaslow W’50 <[email protected]> e-mails he was featured on the cover of the Dec. 10, 2001, issue of Forbes magazine, with several other members of his family. The cover story also featured a full-page photo of the entire family on page 143. Among them were Jerome M. Zaslow W’45, Spencer Zaslow W’47, Janet Zaslow Wischnia C’81, and Robert Zaslow W’89. “Frankly, I never thought I’d be a ‘coverboy.’ So far, 12 of us work in the family firm, ATD-American Co., manufacturers and distributors of textiles, furniture, safety and security equipment and medical supplies and equipment to institutional and government agencies.”

Dr. George B. Kauffman C’51, professor of chemistry at California State University at Fresno, received the 2002 Helen M. Free Award for Public Outreach from the American Chemical Society. In the past two decades he has made regular contributions to the Encyclopedia Britannica, including annual articles for its Yearbook of Science and the Future. These articles gave general readers some of the earliest word on superconductors, lithium batteries, fuel cells, photovoltaics, optical fibers, pesticides, cold fusion, and genetic engineering. He was also one of the first writers to tell the public about consumer products such as soft-contact lenses and artificial sweeteners.

Hyman Lovitz W’51 is of counsel to the Philadelphia law firm of Lovitz & Gold, P.C. He was recently appointed to the board of the Glaucoma Service Foundation to Prevent Blindness; established in 1982, it supports glaucoma research and education at Wills Eye Hospital through its Glaucoma Service Research Center, glaucoma clinical-fellowship program, and a variety of public-education initiatives.

Carol Helitzer Shedlin CW’51, a vocalist and cabaret singer in New York, had a six-performance cabaret act, Fresh as a Daisy, in October and November at Judy’s Chelsea. She has performed there often in “my 10-year new career.”

Dr. Eugene N. Myers W’54 is professor and the Eye and Ear Foundation Chair in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. In May he lectured on “Neck Dissection: An Operation in Evolution” at the annual meeting of the American Head and Neck Society, and attended the 31st Congreso Nacional Asociaciàn Colombiana de Otorrinolaringología Cirugía de Cabeza y Cuello, Maxillofacial y Estética Facial in Santa Marta, Colombia, where he gave a number of lectures. And in June he delivered the J. Ryan Chandler Visiting Professor lectures at the Department of Otolaryngology of the University of Miami.

Sidney Scott Smith Ar’56 <[email protected]> e-mails, “I’m still a full time sole-practitioner architect, operating out of my house in St. Michaels, Md. All drawings on CADD—what a way to fly. Recently booked the third largest project of my 41-year career, a 23,500 sq.ft. adult daycare center in Chestertown. Would love e-mails from former classmates who toiled at the erstwhile Fine Arts building across from Weightman Hall. As the TV commercial goes: Some things cost lots of money, but to me Penn is—priceless.”

Dr. Noel Wilkie D’57 and his wife, Connie, recently established an endowment of $250,000 for the College of Health Sciences at the University of Wyoming; he recently completed a term as president of the University of Wyoming Alumni Association and currently serves on the college’s advisory board. He continues to publish a newsletter for specialists in prosthodontics, The ProsStars Newsletter. Noel and Connie have retirement homes in Rockville, Md., and Bethany Beach, Del.

Dr. Edwin M. Epstein C’58 is an emeritus professor in the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley, where he has been on the faculty since 1964. He recently returned to Berkeley to chair its peace and conflict studies group, after seven years as dean of the School of Economics and Business Administration at Saint Mary’s College of California at Moraga. His wife, Dr. Sandra P. Weinstein Epstein Ed’60, is administrator and COO of the Jewish Home in San Francisco, a skilled-nursing facility for the elderly in San Francisco; she has served in this role since 1984, after completing her doctoral studies at Berkeley. They live in Berkeley.

George H. Heilmeier EE’58 recently received the Pioneer of Stealth Award for “visionary leadership and trailblazing contributions of enduring national significance in the development of low-observable aircraft.”

Dr. William P. Graham III M’59 was honored in June by the establishment of an endowed professorship in plastic surgery in his name at the Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine. He was the founding first chair of the Division of Plastic Surgery there.

1960s

Dr. Richard A. Hogarty WG’60, Marblehead, Mass., is professor emeritus of political science and a senior fellow with the John W. McCormack Institute of Public Affairs at the University of Massachusetts at Boston. His book, Massachusetts Politics and Public Policy: Studies in Power and Leadership, was published by the University of Massachusetts Press in August.

Barbara Hoffman Steinberg CW’60 writes, “I am now living in Atlantic City, where I am still working as a psychotherapist. I am widowed; my husband was David Steinberg, director of planning at Parkview Hospital in Philadelphia. My two children, Dr. Eric Cantor and Glenn Cantor, are both doing well. I have three wonderful grandchildren, Melyssa, Daniel, and Avi.”

Fred Jaffin W’64 <[email protected]>, captain of Penn’s varsity football in 1963, e-mails, “I attended a special dinner program in Hyannis, Mass., and I wanted to note that two of our former Penn players received special awards at the All-America Football Foundation Dinner on Aug. 2: Dan Challis C’64 WG’66 and Whitney Smith W’66 received the ‘Bill Wade Unsung Hero Award.’ Don’s last year of varsity football was 1963 and Whitney’s was 1965.”

Dr. Solomon Green GrS’65 is emeritus professor of social work at the Wurzweiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva University in New York, having served on its faculty for 30 years. In 1966 he founded the school of social work at Bar Han University. He and his wife moved to Israel in 1990.

Steve Adelson C’66 L’69 is enjoying the practice of real estate law in his new firm, Cherwin, Theise, Adelson & Loria, LLP, in Boston. His daughter is Leslie K. Adelson C’99.

Bruce H. Hoffman W’66 e-mails, “Several members of the Class of 1966 recently had a mini-reunion over a long lunch at the Penn Club of New York. Some of us had been having an annual dinner, but this was an expanded lunch as several out-of-state classmates were in the New York area for the first time in many years. The group included Norris Wolff W’66, Dr. Richie Stern C’66, Steve Marcus W’66, Dave Fortunoff W’66, and myself from the New York-metro area. Coming more of a distance were Chuck Landy C’66 (Washington), Jay Samoff C’66 (upstate New York), Steve Pottash W’66 and Myron Kowal W’66 (New Jersey), Mark Cohen C’66(Philadelphia), and Dr. Jon Fratkin C’66 (Jackson, Miss). The group includes several lawyers (Chuck Landy, Norris Wolff, Steve Marcus, Jay Samoff), two doctors (Jon Fratkin and Richie Stern), a professor/consultant (Marc Cohen) and the Wharton guys who are in a range of businesses (Dave Fortunoff, Myron Kowal, Steve Pottash, and Bruce Hoffman). C. Murray Saylor Jr. W’66 WG’67, a partner of the Saylor Law Firm LLP in Atlanta, was elected president of the American Association of Attorney-Certified Public Accountants earlier this year. Murray practices law with his wife and partner, Jacquelyn Saylor, chair-elect of the sole-practitioner/small-firm section of the Atlanta Bar Association. A resident of Ansley Park, Murray is treasurer of the Georgian Chamber Players, and he is a board member and past president of Penn’s Atlanta Alumni Club.

Dr. Mark H. Shapiro Gr’66 has entered the faculty early-retirement program at California State University at Fullerton, where he has been a member of the physics faculty since 1970. For 10 of those years he served as department chair. He plans to use the extra free time afforded by a reduced teaching assignment to continue research in surface physics, and to expand his role as editor and publisher of The Irascible Professor, an online journal of commentary on education issues (irascibleprofessor.com).

William Cecil Jones G’67 and his wife, Adrienne Roos Jones G’71, “have been enjoying frequent visits to Maison Desirée, our new house in Provence; and we were gratified after 10 years of building our company, Just France, to find it named in the Aug. 12 issue of Fortune magazine as one of the top 25 villa companies in the world. Our son, Leonard Wood C’00 G’00, in June received his M.Phil. degree from the University of Oxford (he was at St. Antony’s College), finishing first in his program and receiving the Zander Prize. He began studies for his Ph.D. at Harvard this fall. Brendan is completing a two-year course in French and English literature at St. Edmund Hall at Oxford, and Laura is enjoying her third year of undergraduate studies in business at Northeastern University in Boston.”

Dr. David L. Evans C’68 joined the Smithsonian Institution in September as under-secretary for science. An oceanographer, he had served with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration since 1993, most recently as assistant administrator for research; while there he led the White House Global Climate Change Initiative, coordinating activities of 12 federal agencies.

Dr. John R. Feussner C’68 in July was appointed professor and chair of medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Previously he was chief of research and development for the Veterans’ Health Administration in Washington; his research focus is public health and geriatric medicine. He and his wife, Carol Blessing-Feussner, live in Mt. Pleasant; their daughters Krista Lauren lives in Reston, Va., and Whitney Blessing attends Virginia Technology technological, and their son, Derek John, is a student at the Porter-Gaud School in Charleston.

Ed Friedrichs GAr’68 is chief executive officer of the global architecture and design company Gensler, and an overseer of the Graduate School of Fine Arts. He was quoted in The Washington Post(Aug. 31) for having coined a new design mantra, ‘enlightened realism,’ explaining “Workplace design is quickly getting realistic … While the New Economy was all about speed and how to harness technology to win the race, now it’s about understanding the pace at which people really work and the nature of collaboration. … Innovation will be on the potential of people, rather than experimentation for its own sake.”

Robert Balter C’69 <[email protected]> e-mails, “This has been a year of significant professional publication and teaching for me. My article, ‘Drafting Suggestions for Irrevocable Life Insurance Trusts,’ originally appearing May last year in the Journal of Financial Service Professionals (v.55 n.3, p.76), was re-published last fall in 55 Tax Lawyer 185. This year I taught ‘Using Life Insurance to Fund Estate Planning For Subsequent Marriages’ at an August Pennsylvania Bar Institute seminar in Philadelphia and Mechanicsburg; I published an article, ‘Using Life Insurance To Fund Buy Sell Agreements for LLCs,’ in 29 Estate Planning 460 (September); and I have another article being published in BNA Estates, Gifts and Trusts Journal,(v.27, either in September or in November), entitled ‘Using Trusts as Buyers in Buy Sell Agreements.’ I am very busy, but enjoying my position as director of business for estate planning with Karr Barth Associates, Inc., in Bala Cynwyd, Pa. On a personal note, my daughter, Meredith, has made Dean’s List in all four of her semesters at Florida State University in Tallahassee, where she is majoring in interior design.”

My son, Mark Lion,added to our family resume by completing his degree as part of the Class of 2001.”

Dr. Douglas Wolf C’69 Gr’77, Syracuse, N.Y., is associate director of the Center for Policy Research and the Gerald B. Cramer Professor of Aging Studies in the Maxwell School of Syracuse University. In April a paper on bone strength he had co-written was published in the Journal of Gerontology: Biological Sciences, and he presented a paper on simulated kin networks at a California workshop on “Future Seniors and their Kin.”

1970s

Alan Aidekman W’70 <[email protected]> e-mails, “Truly A Judge, a thoroughbred owned with two partners, was shipped to Philadelphia Park and won the Claiming Crown Jewel Stakes on Aug. 31. This brings his total earnings to $220,000 since he was purchased for $20,000 in October 2001. The partnership also owns a two-year-old colt, Unfurl The Flag. Both horses will race at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park in the fall. I am also helping my wife, Donna, open a Curves franchise, a 30-minute fitness and weight-loss center for women, in Orange Park Acres, in Orange, Calif., where we currently live.”

Dr. David Straus C’70 e-mails, “While I still am closely associated with the Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies, where I have been since 1988, I also have recently accepted an appointment as professor of climate dynamics at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. At COLA we do basic research on the theory of seasonal predictability, and we advise GMU doctoral students. We are also developing a new Ph.D. program in climate dynamics for GMU. My wife, Susan, a child psychologist, and I continue to live in Owings Mills, Md., and are still trying to keep up with our grown daughters, Rebecca (23) and Emily (20).”

Allen Warshaw C’70 <[email protected]> recently joined the law firm of Klett, Rooney, Lieber & Schorling as a shareholder in its Harrisburg, Pa., office; his primary practice area is commercial litigation. More importantly, his youngest son, Bobby, was just selected for the ODP national soccer pool in the 1988 age group. His wife, Dr. Shirley Nes Warshaw CGS’71 WG’76, is a professor of political science at Gettysburg College who has published several books on the U.S. presidency.

Dr. Mary Slotsky Muscato CW’71 and Dr. Joseph J. Muscato C’71 M’75 were jointly selected to receive the Laureate Award from the Missouri chapter of the American College of Physicians, the highest award in the state society and the first ever awarded jointly. They both practice hematology and medical oncology in Columbia.

James S. Holt CE’71 e-mails, “I work as a professional structural engineer in Baltimore for Parsons Corporation, a worldwide engineering firm. In my first ever bid for political office, I recently defeated the incumbent mayor of Mount Airy, Md., a town of over 6,400 residents. I ran as a write-in candidate against the unchallenged three-term incumbent; the election results were challenged in court, and the Circuit Court of Carroll County ruled in my favor. Alan Neibauer WG’71 <[email protected]> e-mails, “I have written over 64 books on computer hardware and software—and two novels, Type A and No Waiting to Die, both published by Belayne Publishing. Type A is the newest, a coming-of-middle-age story about a character loosely based on my wonderful wife of over 35 years (www.belayne.com/typea.htm). The book is a tribute to her: she is undergoing treatment for a rare form of cancer, and all of the profits from the book go to the Foundation for Thymic Cancer Research that we have set up (www.neibauer.net).”

Peter Anderson GAr’72 GCP’72 GFA’72<[email protected]> is a planning and preservation consultant in New Haven, Conn., and New York and is principal of the design and planning firm, Main Street Partners, LLP. He e-mails that he was recently awarded membership in the American Institute of Certified Planners, one of only eight Connecticut planners certified this year (certification requires specific education and professional experience, plus the passing of a national-planning examination given throughout the U.S. and Europe.) He has served on the board of the New Haven Preservation Trust, and as a commissioner for historic preservation for Sedona, Ariz.

Dr. Michael Bentley GEd’72 reports, “I’ve been appointed associate professor of science education at the University of Tennessee. Would like to hear from alumni in the Knoxville area.”

Steven Mait W’72 is happy to announce that Andrew Watkins C’71has joined him as a partner at Wachovia Securities in Coral Springs, Fla. “I have been involved in the financial industry for the past 30 years with a number of New York Stock Exchange firms, as well as my own arbitrage company, in the U.S. as well as Europe. Andy has worked as a CPA for his own company as well as an NYSE-listed company for the past 30 years in New York. He has been a guest speaker numerous times on Bloomberg radio as an expert on taxation for individuals in the sports area, professional media, and international businesses. Susan Miron CW’72, a book critic and harpist, performed in the program, Masters of Chamber Music, at the Eighth World Harp Congress in Geneva last July with her husband, Dr. Burton Fine C’51, a violist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Her latest CD, A Birthday Hansel: Music for Voice and Harp, was released on Chandos Records in the spring. She has also just completed a recording of her own transcriptions of Scarlatti’s keyboard sonatas for harp.

Dr. Andrew I. Schafer M’73 in September was appointed the Frank Wister Thomas Professor of Medicine and chair of the Department of Medicine at the University. Previously he was chair of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Tex. His clinical and research areas of expertise are in hematology, thrombosis, platelet function, and vascular cell biology. The author of over 180 papers, he has edited or co-edited five textbooks and serves on the editorial boards of several scientific journals. His wife, Pauline, is an educator, and they have three children, Kate, Pamela, and Eric.

Mark P. Zelisko C’73 and Julie Chico Zelisko are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Lauren Alessandra, on Jan. 23. “Her brothers, Mark (four) and Vincent (two), share our happiness; we can be contacted at <[email protected]>.”

Dr. R. Wayne Randolph V’74, a small-animal practitioner in Flemington, N.J., in April was installed as a distinguished practitioner member of the National Academies of Practice; it was founded in 1981 to promote interdisciplinary collaboration across the primary health professions.

Richard Busis C’75 G’80, Wynnewood, Pa., is chair of the securities department of the Philadelphia-area law firm of Cozen O’Connor. In September he gave a presentation at a seminar sponsored by the firm on the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.

Dr. Edward C. Halperin W’75, the L. R. Prosnitz Professor and chair of radiation oncology at the Duke University Medical Center, has been named vice-dean of the Duke University School of Medicine.

Rachel Osborn CW’75 in August was named director of foundation and government relations for the Allentown (Pa.) Art Museum. She lives in Allentown with her husband, Nicholas Butterfield, her daughter Laurel Butterfield, a freshman at Syracuse University, and her son, Theodore Butterfield, a freshman at Moravian Academy in Bethlehem, Pa.

James H. Shalek C’75 in July joined the N.Y.-based law firm of Proskauer Rose LLP, as a partner in its patent-litigation practice. Previously he was the managing partner and head of the New York office of Lyon & Lyon.

Dennis O. Wilson C’75 <[email protected]> recently returned to Philadelphia to join the Rohm and Haas Company as senior counsel. In May he was elected assistant corporate secretary, and is now responsible for corporate governance, securities laws, and compliance, in addition to his litigation and counseling responsibilities. He and his wife, Lynell, live with their son, Matthew, in Blue Bell, Pa.

David A. Gross C’76 <[email protected]> e-mails, “Betsy Gifford W’76 and I just celebrated our 24th wedding anniversary by vacationing in Capri, Italy, and planning a trip to visit Penn with our son, Robbie, who is a rising high-school senior. I was recently nominated by President Bush and confirmed by the U.S. Senate as Ambassador for international communications and information policy. For the past year I have been deputy assistant Secretary of State for international communications policy, responsible for the country’s international-telecommunications policy. The job is extraordinarily interesting and challenging, as I head the U.S. delegations for meetings with other countries, either individually or at large multilateral conferences. One of the real highlights was giving a speech recently before the entire U.N. General Assembly.”

Sue Ellen Grossman C’76 will be “leaving New York, after over 20 years as an options trader on the American Stock Exchange, and moving to Sault, in the Vaucluse department of France, with my husband, Patrice Bertrand. Our new address is La Barbane, Rue de la Barbane, Sault 84390, France.”

Nina M. Gussack C’76 GEd’76 is chair of the health-effects litigation-practice group and vice chair of the executive committee of the Philadelphia-based law firm of Pepper Hamilton LLP. She was recently named vice-chair of the drug and medical-device committee of the Defense Research Institute for 2002 and 2003. She will assume the chair in 2004. She serves on the ethics committee of the Wills Eye Hospital.

Richard C. Brodhead G’77 in August was named associate dean for academic and faculty affairs at the Esther Boyer College of Music and Department of Dance at Temple University. Teaching composition at Boyer since 1986, he also served as acting dean for the last academic year. He is a director of the Musical Fund Society of Philadelphia and serves on the board of the Theodore Presser Company.

Dr. Jay Fagan SW’77, Elkins Park, Pa., associate professor of social work at Temple University, was named acting dean of its School of Social Administration in July; he joined the faculty in 1990. His research and clinical interests focus on fathers and fathering: he is general editor of the scholarly journal Fathering: A Journal of Theory, Research, and Practice About Men as Fathers. His Clinical and Educational Interventions with Fathers was published last year, and a new book, Fathers and Early Childhood Programs, was published recently by Delmar Publishing.

Jeffrey Harris W’77 is senior managing director of Warburg Pincus, LLC, the private-equity firm in New York, and chair-elect of the National Venture Capital Association. His firm, Architects James Dart AIA, received an AIA 2002 Honor Award for their project, the Barn Renovation + Lath House Addition, at Philadelphia’s historic Bartram’s Garden. The awards are the profession’s highest recognition of excellence of design in architecture, interiors, and urban design. The jury described the project as “an ingenious addition to an historic barn that creates interest by contrasting the assembled nature of the new with the monolithic quality of the old.”

A neurologist and neuroscientist, Ken is professor in the neurology and anatomy & cell biology departments at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. He is also director of its Laboratory for Cellular and Molecular Cerebral Ischemia that focuses on therapies for neurological disorders, such as stroke and Alzheimer’s disease. He recently enjoyed visiting professorships in Tokyo, Beijing, and Sicily and is about to publish a new book on neuronal and vascular plasticity in the nervous system.

We met in Sydney, a long way to come to meet a boy from County Leitrim, Ireland. We are now both living here, at least for the near future. Chris Hsu C’95 writes, “Matt Sadowsky C’95 W’95, Rich Carvajal C’95 W’95, Todd Hazelkorn C’95 W’95, and I along with three other friends ran the longest relay race in the country on July 19-21, distancing a total of 275 miles. The race took place in northern Michigan across various terrains ranging from sand and pavement to swamps and river crossings. We competed against over 65 other teams (numbering 8-10 runners per team) from other parts of the country. We were the smallest team in the whole race with only seven runners but, despite the size of our team, we were still able to beat a few 10 person teams. They met at a dot.com party on an aircraft carrier in San Francisco, and one of their early dates was spent writing a guest column together for the now-defunct magazine Industry Standard. They have “ridden out the tech craze”: he has stayed with FreeMarkets for the past 3 1/2 years, where he is currently senior manager for strategic marketing, and she is senior manager with Andersen (now KPMG) business consulting. Both continue to write and speak frequently about strategic sourcing and supply-chain management.

Jones SW’99, a second-year law student at the Rutgers University School of Law at Camden, N.J. received a $2,000 Garden State Bar Association Scholarship in recognition of scholarly excellence and commitment to community service. She serves as vice president of the Black Law Student Association, lead state constitutional-law editor for the Rutgers Law Journal, and was recently named a Marshall-Brennan Fellow, allowing her to teach constitutional law in Camden schools in 2003.
