1940s

Camillus Kenihan Eisele CW’49 writes of “the rather unusual accomplishment of my friend, Sonia Lippincott CW’49, of Markleville, Ind. Her backyard has been certified a wildlife habitat in the Backyard Wildlife Habitat program of the National Wildlife Federation.” A retired social worker, Sonia lives on the two-acre property that boasts a thriving natural wetland in the front yard and a lush wild garden in the back. She does not like mowing, is never battling weeds or trimming hedges, though she spends several hours a day tending the habitat. As she puts it, she likes Mother Nature to reign in all her wild glory” “I like messes; I am trying to get my lawn as small as possible.”

1950s

John E. Keating WEv’51 writes, “I re-applied and was selected for membership in the Sigma Kappa Phi Honor Society, 50 years after graduating. The initiation ceremony banquet was held at the Inn at Penn on June 16, and was a very enjoyable and memorable evening. Guests included my wife, Dolores, and daughter Diane and her husband, Jim Geddes. Daughter Mary Ann and her husband, Bill Davis, and son, Jack Keating Jr., were unable to attend. I continue to serve as the retirement plan administrator for Reedman Corp. in Langhorne, Pa., having retired in Feb. 1989 after serving 30 years as comptroller there. I am still playing golf regularly at Yardley Country Club.”

David E. Field ChE’52 has been retired from Raytheon Engineers and Constructors of Philadelphia, where he was a project manager. He lives in Haddonfield, N.J., and has started a new career there making musical instruments, Appalachian dulcimers and levered folk harps; he has exhibited at many juried craft shows in the greater Delaware Valley. “Would be delighted to hear via e-mail from classmates at <[email protected]>.”

Donald R. McIlvain ChE’52 GCh’59 and his wife, Martha, have been elected to the board of trustees of The Fund for West Chester University of Pennsylvania, and he was appointed treasurer and chair of its finance committee.

Dr. Charles L. Walter C’52 e-mails that he enjoys e-mail and snail mail from old College friends. He also is keen to hear from anyone interested in over-the-road truck driver traumatic stress <[email protected]>. A retired Veterans Affairs clinical psychologist, he and his wife, Janet, live in Johnson City, Tenn., and have five grandchildren. His son, Wesley, teaches physics at Denison University; his daughter, Bernadette, and her husband, Tracy Eells, practice and teach clinical psychology at the University of Louisville. Charles keeps active in church, in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and in the field of trucker stress.

William Polk Carey W’53 and his firm, W. P. Carey & Co. LLC, a corporate real-estate investment-banking and net-lease firm based in Manhattan, were honored by the Newcomen Society of the United States for leadership and business success in the corporate real-estate financing industry, and his philanthropic and educational contributions. With Nobel Prizewinner Dr. Lawrence R. Klein he helped establish Penn’s Economics Research Institute.

Harold L. Gechtman C’54 writes, “In September I became of counsel to the law firm of Skoloff & Wolfe, P.C., in Livingston, N.J., specializing in family law and real-estate tax appeals. I am a member of the family-law section of the New Jersey State Bar Association and have lectured at Rutger’s Law School for the Institute for Continuing Legal Education. I have written various articles including those for the New Jersey Law Journal.”

Stanton A. Moss W’56 is president of Stanton A. Moss, Inc., a Philadelphia-area nonferrous-scrap trading company. In November he received the Phoenix Award from the mid-Atlantic chapter of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries in recognition of his lifetime achievements in the industry. He started his career in 1956 with George Sall Metals Co., a secondary aluminum and brass ingotmaker. In 1974 he started his own company as a trader in nonferrous scrap, primarily aluminum.

Frederick Cohen W’57 L’60 e-mails he was recently appointed to be a U.S. bankruptcy, chapter 7, trustee.

Howard Isenberg W’58 <[email protected]> e-mails, “After 38 years in the packaging business I [retired] at the end of [last] year. One of the highlights of my career included developing and managing a packaging joint venture in China. My future activities will include volunteer work, travel, and spending more time with my granddaughter. My son, Alan Isenberg C’01, graduated from the College last year.”

Prof. Robert M. Skaler Ar’59 will have his first book published early this year as part of Arcadia’s Images of America series. West Philadelphia, University City to 52nd Street is a pictorial history, the first in almost 100 years, of West Philadelphia’s development that includes many images of the University City neighborhoods as they looked at the turn of the century. He used his extensive real-photo post-card collection for the book. He has also written several articles on Philadelphia architecture for Victorian Homes magazine.

1960s

Dr. Kenneth P. Mortimer C’60 WG’62, Bellingham, Wash., in July was elected to the board of Puget Energy. He is president emeritus of the University of Hawaii, and had earlier served as president of Western Washington University (1988-93).

Selma Roseman Davis CW’61 G’62 lives in Bala Cynwyd, Pa., with her husband of 38 years, Edgar P. Davis C’49. With their three children, all Penn grads, they share 11 degrees. Selma and Edgar are prize-winning freelance journalists with the local newspaper Main Line Life, which has won best paper in North America, three years out of the last five. Selma’s book, Hula Kapu, a murder story set in Hawaii, was published last year by XLibris.com, and it is available in the large bookstores.

Donald J. Schneider WG’61 is president of Schneider National Inc., the large North American truckload carrier based in Green Bay, Wis., and founder of Schneider Logistics, Inc. In November he was named person of the year by the Logistics, Transportation & Supply Chain Management Society of the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland. He also serves on the board and executive committee of the Green Bay Packers Football Team.

Dr. Jeremy Sabloff C’64, the Williams Director of University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, in July was appointed chair of a commission to review the Smithsonian Institution’s scientific research and make recommendations for its future direction.

Dr. Ronald J. Schindler C’64 Gr’78 was invited by the World Association for Case Method Research and Application to speak to business students at the University of Vienna early this month on “FDR and the Social Security Act of 1935: Assessment of Business Student Psychological Reactions to Teaching the Value of State Intervention During Crises of Capitalism.” It is to be published.

Peter B. Frank W’65 WG’66 recently joined Daymon Associates, Inc., in Stamford, Conn., as executive vice president of finance and chief financial officer. The company is a marketer of corporate brand products and a broker of private label food products. He had retired after a 36-year career at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he was vice-chair, served on its policy board and management committee, and most recently, was a member of its global-leadership group. Fred Greene C’65 WG’67 was recently elected chair of Boyden, an international executive-search firm with 325 partners and offices in 42 countries. In addition to his role as head of the global firm, he also is the managing partner in the San Francisco office.

Martin H. Wiener W’65, an attorney, is board-certified as a trial advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.

John R. Doman C’66 has joined the cast of The Wire, a new HBO series being shot in Baltimore. He is also featured with Robert DeNiro in City by the Sea, a film released last year by Warner Bros.

Dr. James S. Foley D’67 writes, “I’ve finally retired, after 33 years of practicing dentistry. I bought a six-acre farm in Albion, Maine. It is my ultimate dream: rural, pristine, unadulterated land. I want to hike, bird watch, snow-mobile, and camp. My e-mail is <[email protected]>.”

Paul C. Garner C’67, an attorney, is board-certified as a trial advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.

Jay Robert Stiefel C’68 G’71 <[email protected]> wrote Philadelphia Cabinetmaking and Commerce, 1718-1753: the Account Book of John Head and The Head Account Book as Artifact, which inaugurated the American Philosophical Society’s online historical journal, the Library Bulletin, vol.1, no.1, new series (www.amphilsoc.org/library/bulletin/20011/head.htm). The articles chronicle the discovery and significance of the earliest surviving account book of Philadelphian cabinetmaker, John Head (1688-1754). Jay has since lectured on his discovery to the members of the Decorative Arts Trust and the graduate students of Winterthur Museum.

Robert Balter C’69 <[email protected]> recently taught a course at the section-day presentations of the Greater Philadelphia Society of Financial Service Professionals on “Using Trusts as Buyers in Shareholders’ Buy-Sell Agreements.”

Dr. Francis J. Harvey Gr’69, Los Gatos, Calif., vice chair of The IT Group, Inc., the environmental and infrastructure corporation based in Pittsburgh, was named in July to the board of the Bridge Bank of Silicon Valley.

Marc D. Jonas C’69 L’72, a real estate partner in the Lansdale Pa., office of the Philadelphia law firm of Fox, Rothschild, O’Brien & Frankel, LLP, recently appeared on the Fox News television program, Hannity & Colmes, where he discussed the Federal Religious Land Use and Institutional Persons Act of 2000. He represented a group of neighbors and a Montgomery County church in zoning disputes under this legislation.

Lorraine Schechter GFA’69, a Santa Fe artist and arts educator, was hired in October as the city’s arts-education coordinator. She is well-qualified for this as she has taught at all levels, from pre-school and grade school, through to the college level, having taught at Swarthmore College: “I feel very deeply the need for arts education in our schools. It is as important as English, math, or science for educating the whole person.” Her work has also been exhibited in numerous one-woman shows and group shows around the country, and in various public collections. And she recently completed an art-instruction book, The Book of Yes: Everyperson’s Guide to Becoming an Artist.

Hon. Richard B. Teitelman C’69, a judge of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District, in September was elected president of the Missouri Bar for 2001-02. He was also appointed to a one-year term as chair of the ABA’s Commission on Mental Health and Physical Disability Law. And in October he received the Difference Maker Award from the ABA’s Young Lawyers’ Division and the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis.

1970s

Edward M. Watters III L’70, a partner in the Berwyn, Pa., office of Pepper Hamilton LLP and a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, in October was named chair of the Pennsylvania Joint State Government Commission’s advisory committee on decedents’ estates laws, which consists of non-legislators drawn from the bench and probate bar.

Dr. Clarence C. Hoover III GEd’71 <[email protected]> was appointed superintendent of Vineland, N.J., public schools, effective Sept. 1. The district has approximately 10,000 students and 2,100 staff members.

Hon. Charles S. Shapiro C’71 was last year nominated and confirmed as the U.S. Ambassador to Venezuela.

Stephen G. Smith C’71, former editor of National Journal and U.S. News and World Report, has joined Winner & Associates, a Publicis Consultants company, as executive vice president managing the Washington office.

Dr. Georges A. Fauriol G’72 Gr’81 was appointed in September vice president for strategic planning at the International Republican Institute in Washington. Most recently he was director and senior fellow of the Americas program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He is the author or co-author of nine books and more than 50 other publications; his articles have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, The Miami Herald, The Baltimore Sun, and Foreign Affairs. He frequently testifies before congressional committees.

Bill Keller C’73, Jamaica Estates, N.Y., and Lynn Steinberg are pleased to announce the birth of Jacob Benjamin Steinberg Keller on June 22. He enjoys playing with his sister, Emma (12), and brother, Sean (nine). “Jake and family can be reached at <[email protected]>.”

Susan Peikes Gantman CW’74 G’74, Narberth, Pa., is a member of the Conshohocken office of the law firm of Cozen O’Connor and co-chair of its family-law department. She spoke in October at the Beth Or Synagogue sisterhood dinner on “The Jewish Marriage: Keeping Our Covenants to Each Other.” Prior to joining Cozen, she was a partner at Sherr, Joffe, & Zuckerman, and served as assistant district attorney for Montgomery County. A frequent lecturer for the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, she is a certified instructor for the legal aspects of abuse. Active in the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, Susan is co-chair of its Women, Money, and Power lecture in April.

Aldonna R. Ambler SW’76, president of Ambler Growth Strategy Consultants, Inc. in Hammonton, N.J., spoke on resilience at the annual convention of the New Zealand Speakers Association in November. She has written Bound To Make Sense and Celebrate Selling: The Consultative Relationship Way.

Mitchell Feldman C’76 <[email protected]> e-mails, “After a peripatetic career in the U.S. as an arts-marketing and media-relations specialist that included staff positions at BMG Classics, the 92nd Street Y, and Symphony Space in Manhattan, and the Vilar Center for the Arts in Beaver Creek, Colo., and consultancies with such clients as the Cultural Olympiad of the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta and Jazz at Lincoln Center and Blue Note Records in Manhattan, I moved to Italy in June 1999. I am currently active as a freelance journalist (i.e. Italy correspondent for the jazz magazine Down Beat and a contributor to the features section of the International Herald Tribune supplement Italy Daily), and also as a copywriter and translator.”

Barry M. Hartman C’76 had re-joined the law firm of Kirkpatrick & Lockhart, LLP, as a partner to head the Washington office’s environment and natural-resources practice. He was with the company from 1992 to 2000, after completing four years of service in various roles at the U.S. Department of Justice, including as acting assistant attorney general for the environment and natural resources division. From March 2000 he was senior vice president and general counsel of Horsehead Industries, Inc., the New York-based recycler of zinc products. Currently, he is also editor-in-chief of the EPA Enforcement Manual.

Joseph Yohlin C’76 and Pamela Yohlin C’78 GEd’78 received the David Ben-Gurion Award from the State of Israel Bonds. The tribute dinner in their honor raised more than $1 million in investment capital to strengthen Israel’s economy.

Jay M. Levin C’77 L’81 is an attorney in the Philadelphia office of Cozen O’Connor who serves as chair of the company’s insurance-coverage department. In November he co-chaired “Earth, Wind & Fire: Key Issues After a Catastrophe,” a regional program sponsored by the ABA’s tort and insurance section.

Joan Levin C’77 is a partner in the law firm of Schwartz, Levin & Milano in New York and White Plains. She and her husband have two young sons and live in Armonk.

David J. Abeshouse C’78 <[email protected]> e-mails, “After resigning in mid-2000 from my partnership at a law firm where I ‘lived’ for 14 years, I am in my second year of solo law practice (continuing my focus on business litigation and alternative dispute resolution), and enjoy the autonomy and the opportunity to spend more time with my wife, Daryle (a school nurse) and our 10-year-old twins, Harlan and Rachel. I also serve as president of the New York Virtuosi Chamber Symphony, a not-for-profit professional orchestra based in the New York metropolitan area, on Penn’s secondary-schools committee for Long Island, and as an active member of various committees in several city and suburban bar associations.”

Diane Kaplan CW’78 was recently named chief executive officer of the Rasmuson Foundation in Anchorage.

James Weissman C’78 <[email protected]> e-mails he and Julia Weissman have fled Silicon Valley and relocated to beautiful Charlottesville, Va., with their son, Jonah.

Jo Beth Dudley C’79 <[email protected]> e-mails, “As of January last year, I was appointed associate dean at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine. Prior to that I served as director of the oncology program of the UW Comprehensive Cancer Center and the UW Hospitals and Clinics. I live outside Madison, with my three children, Chris (16), Emily (eight), and Mariah (six). Needless to say, trying to keep up with three children and work doesn’t leave me with much free time, but I still try to get back home (northern N.H.) occasionally to hike or ski. This past summer I had a great vacation rafting in Wyoming.”

Dr. James R. Rummel V’79 <[email protected]> is owner and hospital administrator of Camboro Veterinary Hospital, Inc., in Edinboro and Meadville, Pa.. He was recently elected president of the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association.

1980s

Dr. Bernard Duroc-Danner WG’80 Gr’86, is chair, president, and chief executive officer of Weatherford International, Inc., a Houston-based oilfield-services company. In July he was elected to the board of Peabody Energy, a private-sector coal company.

Andrea Haas Hubbell C’80 has been named the Connecticut Filmmaker of the Year by the Connecticut Film Commission. Her documentaries have won more than 30 film and video festival awards, including four Emmys.

Lesley N. Stone C’80 <[email protected]> e-mails, “I only have time for a quick note as I am in the middle of my first year of law school. In 1980, I received an M.P.H. from Columbia University, so I hope I will eventually find a position in health-care law. I have the best study group of all: my son, Tommy (12) and my daughter, Megan (nine). I would appreciate any words of support from anyone who got past their first year of law school.”

Vickee Jordan Adams C’81 in October was appointed senior managing director of the new media-communications practice of Hill and Knowlton USA, the public relations and public affairs firm based in New York. Previously she was director of corporate communications for the Dow Jones & Company. She is a trustee of the WNYC Radio Foundation and serves on the board of the Women Executives in Public Relations Foundation.

Amy Blechman-Soren W’81 and Joel Soren are very happy to announce the birth of Benjamin Elliott Soren on March 14. Big sister Gerri is also thrilled to welcome Benjie into the family; they live in north suburban Chicago.

George W. Moore W’81 L’85, of counsel in the personal-law practice group in the Philadelphia office of the law firm Morgan Lewis & Bockius, LLP, has been re-elected to the executive board of the Southeastern Pennsylvania chapter of the American Red Cross, where he is serving a second term as chair of its public-support committee, which oversees fundraising and public relations. His practice focuses on real estate matters for high-net-worth individuals, estates and trusts, including the acquisition, sale, financing, and development of personal and business properties, with experience in counseling fiduciaries in such matters.

John D. Woodward Jr. W’81 <[email protected]>, a Thouron Scholar 1981-83, is a senior policy analyst at Rand, a “nonprofit institution that helps improve policy and decision-making through research and analysis.” He works on national security, intelligence, and technology-policy issues in its Washington office. Previously he was an operations officer in the Central Intelligence Agency. His recent publications include Biometrics: Facing Up to Terrorism, Super Bowl Surveillance: Facing Up to Biometrics, and Army Biometric Applications: Identifying the Sociocultural Concerns.

Robert Z. Bliss W’82 <[email protected]> is founder and general partner of Windmill Partners LP, a hedge fund located in New York. “I am also the President of Galt Trading Corp., a day-trading firm based in Boca Raton, Fla. I live in New York with my wife, Laurie, and sons Ryan (six) and Henry (four).”

Dr. Maria Pavlis Glasser EE’82 <[email protected]> e-mails, “Living in my hometown of Greenwich, Conn., and married to Dr. Steven Glasser, an internist, with two sons, Philip (five) and David (21 months). A practicing cardiologist, doing diagnostic cardiac testing (stress tests and echocardiograms) part-time. I am enjoying the balance between motherhood and career: it can be done. Larry Lipoff W’82 has left Deloitte & Touche and is a tax principal with the accounting firm of Weinick Sanders Leventhal & Co. LLP in New York.

Dan Carmel ME’83 GME’84 was appointed in July vice president for marketing and business development with iManage, Inc., a provider of Internet content and collaboration software, based in San Mateo, Calif. Previously he was vice president of worldwide marketing at Selectica, an Internet selling-systems provider.

Cantor Howard Shalowitz C’83, an attorney who practices law in St. Louis and serves as vice president of the Bar Association for Metropolitan St. Louis, recently became a distinguished fellow of the St. Louis Bar Foundation. He also won the 2000 national Telly Award as the host of a weekly television show See/Hear. Chair of the ambassador committee of the Cantor’s Assembly, he travels throughout this country and Canada to officiate at synagogue services and lecture on Jewish music. Dr. Howard R. Underwood W’83 <[email protected]>, formerly associate vice president and actuary at CIGNA HealthCare, has been recruited to join the management-turnaround team at Aetna Insurance Company. His new role, head of medical informatics and quality measurement for Aetna/USQA, will be based in Blue Bell, Pa., the site of the former headquarters for US Healthcare. He is the first physician actuary.

Dr. Laurie Cohen C’84 and her husband, Ron Samuels, are pleased to announce the birth of their son, Brian Scott Samuels, on Sept. 4. He joins his big sisters Rachel (almost five) and Julie (three). Laurie has been living in Boston for the past 10 years, where she is on staff at Children’s Hospital as a pediatric endocrinologist.

Thomas A. Culmo C’84, an attorney, is board-certified as a trial advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.

Stephen Jacobs C’84 was named in July vice president and chief financial officer of American Lawyer Media, Inc., the legal journalism and information company based in New York. He had served as vice president for corporate affairs and general counsel there since 1998.

Claude Nichols III GM’84, Williston, Vt., was appointed as chair of orthopaedics and rehabilitation at the University of Vermont College of Medicine and clinical leader of the orthopedics and rehabilitation service at Fletcher Allen Health Care.

David Weiss C’84 is now a writer for The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn on CBS. He lives in Studio City, Calif., with his wife, Joan, and his son, Max.

Jennifer Bilfield C’85 <[email protected]> has been promoted to general manager of the North American office of music publisher Boosey & Hawkes. She also serves on the boards of several arts organizations, including the Music Publishers Association, and is a member of the symphonic and concert committee of ASCAP. Jenny and her husband, Joel Phillip Friedman, a composer and music professor, are parents of a “vivacious toddler, Hallie Eliza Friedman (aka Hallie-mander), born July 15, 2000. The three live in New York with two very verbal parrots.”

Amy Hoberman Kohrman C’85 <[email protected]> e-mails, “I’ve been living in sunny Palo Alto for the past two years with my husband, Matthew, an anthro professor at Stanford, our daughter, Asa, and her sibling whom we expect in March. I’ve been working as a manager at Art Technology Group, a personalized e-commerce software company for four years now.”

Jeff Korenstein C’85 <[email protected]> and his wife, Sandra LeBrun, are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Nicole Concetta, on Aug. 22. As their first child, Nicole is “quickly teaching us the fine art of childcare.” Jeff is a corporate account executive specializing in IT companies with wireless provider Nextel Communications, and Sandy is taking a temporary break from her job as a high-school French teacher in Sharon, Mass. They live in Waltham, and would love to hear from alumni in the Boston area.

Allan Rimland EAS/W’85 has joined First Union Securities in New York as managing director of its healthcare investment-banking group; he had previously served in a similar position with Banc of America Securities.

Kathryn Gregorio C’86 has been the producer at Hancock Productions, LLC, since 1998. The company produced three 30-second regional commercials for New York City Councilmember Eva Moskowitz C’86, who “won her 2001 re-election campaign by a landslide.” Kathryn also produced the company’s most recent documentary, Exclusions & Awakenings: The Life of Maxine Greene(distributed by the Center for Media & Independent Learning, UC Berkeley). She and her partner, director Markie Hancock, produce media for nonprofit organizations and foundations.

Paul Kornman EAS’86 and Sharone Frisch Kornman C’86welcome Joseph Anthony Kornman, who was born in Hartford, Conn., on Aug. 13. He joins his brother Jacob (eight) and sister Isabel (six). All live in West Hartford.

Rod J. Rosenstein W’86 <[email protected]> in September was appointed deputy assistant attorney general for the tax division of the U.S. Department of Justice where he supervises the criminal tax enforcement program. Previously he was an assistant U.S. attorney in Greenbelt, Md. Rod lives in Bethesda, with his wife, Lisa Barsoomian, and their daughter, Julia.

Deborah Hardy Telman C’86 <[email protected]> e-mails, “I am happy to report that I have recently been elected a partner at Winston & Strawn. I am also the very proud mom of twin boys, Nigel F. Telman II and Nicholas A. Telman, who were born on Oct. 2, 1998. The lads are fantastic and are already being groomed for Penn, Class of 2019. Their father, a Cornell grad, is trying desperately to sway them to Ithaca. Maybe we will send one to each. Despite all of my good news, I still miss the good old days of two-for-one drink nites at O’Hara’s with my sorors.”

Susan Kleinman Wechsler C’86 <[email protected]> and Dr. Steve Wechsler D’87 are “delighted to announce the birth of our first child, Galia Rose Kleinman Wechsler, on May 29. We live in White Plains, N.Y., where Steve practices general and cosmetic dentistry, and I write for interior-design publications and women’s magazines.”

Doug Cohen C’87 e-mails, “My wife, Nadine (a non-Quaker), and I welcomed our third child, Benjamin Matthew Cohen, on Nov. 8. He joins big sisters Briya (three) and Adena (18 months). Dr. Daniel M. Feinberg C’87 and Dana Feinberg announce the birth of their second child, Hannah, on Oct. 29. “I am clinical assistant professor of neurology at Penn and the medical director of performance improvement at Pennsylvania Hospital. I look forward to my 15th Reunion in May.”

Dr. Kim F. Hall G’90 in September became first occupant of the Mullarkey Chair in English Literature at Fordham University, its first chair in the humanities. A Renaissance scholar, she previously was an associate professor of English at Georgetown University. Her award-winning Things of Darkness: Economies of Race and Gender in Early Modern England (1995), uses black feminist theory to examine early-modern literary and historical materials. Currently she is working on two books: an edition of Othello for the Bedford St. Martin’s Text and Contexts series, and “A Taste of Empire: Women and Material Culture in Early Modern England,” which examines the cultural effects of the sugar trade in 17th-century England and its Caribbean colonies.

Dr. Mark Mendel GEng’90 Gr’95 is a managing director and founder of RiverVest Venture Partners in St. Louis, and serves on the board of its portfolio company, Cydex, Inc. Previously he was a vice president at ARCH Venture Partners, a seed and early-stage venture fund based in Chicago, establishing a New York operations for the firm. He has worked in medical research at Penn’s Scheie Eye Institute, in product development (he was part of a team that developed an automated blood-chemistry analyzer for use in physician’s offices), in manufacturing at Polaroid Corporation, and in software development at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Dr. Carladenise Armbrister Edwards C’92 GEd’93 graduated with a Ph.D. in medical sociology from the University of Florida on Dec. 15. Her dissertation, “A Multidimensional Approach to the Study of Prenatal Cocaine Exposure,” explores the physiological and sociological influences on the behavior and development of children prenatally exposed to cocaine. She was selected to serve as a presidential management intern in the Department of Health and Human Services, where she is a public-health analyst in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration in Rockville, Md.

Brandon Slay W’98, winner of a Gold Medal in wrestling at the 2000 Olympic Games, recently conducted a workshops-and-lectures tour at high schools throughout the country. “I am extremely blessed and humbled to be able to inspire with some of the lessons I have learned … At the end of the talks, I pull out the gold medal and tell the kids, ‘There is a much greater gold to life than winning gold medals.’ And that they need to turn stumbling blocks into stepping stones.” Brandon, who blew out his right knee in a water-skiing accident in June, wants to compete in the Athens Games in 2004. The rehabilitation would take nine to 12 months to complete. “It’s going to be tough, because that leaves only three years to get ready,” he said. “But I am working out every day.”
