1930s

Bernard Frank L’38, an attorney in Allentown, Pa., in March received the Wallenberg Tribute Award from the Institute for Jewish-Christian Understanding of Muhlenberg College. He had received an honorary doctorate from Muhlenberg in 1987, and its alumni-achievement award in 1988. This month he will be named a fellow of the administrative-law and regulatory-practice section of the ABA; he had served as chair of the ABA and of the Federal Bar Association. A past president of the International Bar Association’s institute and chair of its ombudsman committee, he has received awards from the U.S. Ombudsman Association and the International Ombudsman Institute. In 1980 he received the Swedish Order of the North Star “for his services to the ombudsman concept”; ombudsmen began in Sweden in 1809.

1940s

Margaret Black Warres PSW’44, a past president of the Child Study Association of Maryland, was honored early last year as one of its distinguished members, for her work over the decades with the association and many other agencies. She was also honored by the Baltimore Central Scholarship Bureau, where she was executive director from 1952 to 1988. And she was included in the millennium edition of Marquis’ Who’s Who of American Women. Margie and her husband, Dr. H. Leonard Warres, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in June last year.

Josephine Arader Hueber CW’47 in April received the Angell Medal from the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology for her distinguished service as a Museum supporter, most recently organizing the “44 Celebrity Eyes in a Museum Storeroom” exhibition.

Dr. Slater E. Newman W’47, professor of psychology at North Carolina State University, has been elected to the national advisory council of the American Civil Liberties Union.

Alice Lee Chun Ed’48 writes “You are never too young or is it you’re never too old to start a new career? At age 75 I am concluding my second year in show biz. It has been exciting.” A few of her appearances: with the Backstreet Boys in a TV commercial for Sears; in a January episode of Third Watch (NBC); as an extra in the Mary Tyler Moore TV-film reuniting her character and Valerie Harper’s Rhoda from the 1970s television show; as a Japanese tourist with Demi Moore in the film Passion of Mind, and as a mother with her daughter in New York’s Chinatown for a PeoplePC print ad. “To my peers: join me in this exciting new field for the elderly.”

Dr. Henry N. Michael CCC’48 Gr’54, a long-time senior fellow in the Museum Applied Science Center for Archaeology and a pioneer in the field of dendrochronology, in April received the Director’s Award from the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology for his exceptional volunteer work.

Bernard J. Taylor W’49, West Chester, Pa., former chair and chief executive officer of the Wilmington Trust Co., was inducted late last year into the Delaware Business Leaders Hall of Fame. Head from 1979 to 1992 of the state’s largest bank, he directed its entry into commercial banking there, where it now controls half the market, and has become a leading provider of holding-company services. He was quoted that he is most proud of the financial record Wilmington Trust achieved during his tenure: generating an average 25-percent earnings growth each year as profits rose from $3.5 million to $72.8 million, and with the stock price rising from $1.75 to $29. The Hall of Fame is on permanent display in the historic Hagley Museum in suburban Wilmington.

1950s

Dr. Frederick B. Cohen G’50, an oncologist at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and former director of its Flo Okin Oncology Center, was honored at the center’s gala in May. He also serves as chair of the New Jersey Commission on Cancer Research.

Donald Parker W’50, a retired high-school social studies teacher who was a founding member of the New York Civil Liberties Union of Nassau County and co-founder of the Long Island Coalition Against Censorship, received a Hugh M. Hefner First Amendment Award last November for his “nearly 40 years indefatigable dedication to free speech.” He wrote the school texts Civil Liberties and the Law (1965) and Civil Liberties Today (1974), as well as creating exhibits displayed in schools, public libraries, colleges and university libraries throughout the country.

Carl Di Stefano W’50 moved to California soon after graduation, and “enjoyed a very successful 43-year career with Allstate Insurance Co.; just retired Jan. 1.” He has two children and three grandchildren. “Love traveling, gardening and enjoying the good life.”

Melvin Westley ChE’50 met Hannah Cook Westley CW’52 at an Alpha Chi Rho fraternity party; they were married Oct. 22, 1950. Throughout this year they are celebrating their 50th anniversary with friends and family across the country.

Dr. George B. Kauffman C’51 in March received the American Chemical Society’s Award for Research at an Undergraduate Institution. Now retired as emeritus professor of chemistry at California State University at Fresno, he was recognized for his “43 years of guiding students to think and act imaginatively and independently.” As a professor at a primarily undergraduate university, he listed the students who helped him conduct research as co-authors on 152 published articles. Dr. Kauffman remembered, “When I was a freshman at the University of Pennsylvania, my teaching assistant, Lou Baker, allowed me to work in his lab; I guess I decided to repay the debt.”

Fred N. Kronfeld W’51 retired in 1994, and now spends winters in Naples, Fla., and summers in Alpine, N.J. “My sons are running my former company, Sprite Industries; both are married and Zelda and I enjoy our three granddaughters and one grandson.”

Jim Delehanty C’52 writes that his daughter, Patty Delehanty, has just completed her second season as coach of the Blackbirds, the Long Island University’s women’s basketball team. Their home is the Schwartz Athletic Center in Brooklyn, once more famously known as the Brooklyn Paramount Theatre, a glittering showcase for the stars from 1928 to 1962. Nowadays visiting teams playing in the gymnasium gaze upward at the beauty of the artwork.

Jeanne Korns Clark Nu’53, a retired nurse who lives in Old Lyme, Conn., in February volunteered with Global Volunteers, teaching English and other subjects at a school in northern India.

Harris Ominsky W’53 L’56, a partner in the real-estate department of the Philadelphia law firm of Blank, Rome, Comisky & McCauley LLP, led a workshop at an ABA section meeting in March on “Tenants’ Options: Using Them and Losing Them.” He also spoke at a meeting of the Delaware County Apartment Owners Association in late April.

Robert Goldman C’54, the national collegiate foil champion in his senior year, was inducted into the University of Pennsylvania Fencing Hall of Fame in April.

Dr. Eugene N. Myers W’54, professor and chair of otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, received its medical-alumni-association recognition award from its Class of 1999 last year. He also recently gave a number of lectures and addresses throughout the country and in Italy, Turkey, Greece, Spain and Germany.

David Fuchs W’56 and his wife, Mona, have retired to The Landings on Skidaway Island in Savannah, Ga. Their older son, Graham Fuchs C’93, majored in communications at Penn.

Alan Siegel W’56 is a partner in the New York law firm of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld L.L.P. and serves on the boards of Thor Industries, Inc., The Wet Seal, Inc., and Ermenegildo Zegna Corp. “Sandy and I live in Manhattan and Woodstock, N.Y. Our sons (and our grandson) live in California, where we spend as much time as possible.”

Lee Zeidman Mu’56 owns the Everglades Literary Agency, representing authors who write “books for healthful living.” She lives in Pompano Beach, Fla., with her husband, Dr Herman M. Zeidman, author of Conquer Stress: Staying Sane in an Insane World. For the past 15 years, Lee has interviewed students who live in South Florida for Penn’s Secondary Schools Committee.

Lynn Sandler Hubschman CW’57 SW’64 is a marriage and family counselor and had served as director of social work at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. She recently published Transsexuals: Life From Both Sides, based on her counseling experience of more than 25 years with transgendered clients and their families, and currently is working on a similar documentary video. Earlier she had published Hospital Social Work Practice.

Alan H. Molod W’58, Elkins Park, Pa., a senior partner in the Philadelphia law firm of Wolf, Block, Schorr & Solis-Cohen, was honored at the May ball of the Golden Slipper Club & Charities, which has the “mission to serve the area’s youth, elderly and needy.” He has been active in the organization for more than 20 years.

William H. Hansell Jr. W’59 WG’72, executive director of the International City/County Management Association, based in Washington, received the Donald Stone Practitioner Award from the American Society for Public Administration in April. 

Prof. Robert M. Skaler Ar’59, forensic architect and past president of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Victorian Society, was the keynote speaker at the opening reception of the annual national meeting of The Victorian Society in America, held in Philadelphia in May. His article on using old postcards as historic documentation appears in the July-August issue of The Old House Journal.

Charles K. Williams C’59, known professionally as C. K. Williams, won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for his latest book of poetry, Repair,published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

1960s

Barbara Price Shamir CW’61 is married to Shimon and has been living in Israel since 1969. “I have four sons and 10 grandchildren (so far). I retired from running the travel agency of the Youth Hostels Association of Israel, and am working on travel through the Internet. I will be delighted to hear from anyone at <[email protected]>.”

Dr. Augustus M. Filbert Gr’62, retired director of technical services at Corning, Inc., and now a private consultant, was appointed chair of the council of Alfred State College, part of SUNY College of Technology.

Dr. Howard S. Pitkow C’62 G’63, professor of physiology at the Temple University School of Medicine and president-elect of the National Association of Academies of Science, co-edited Ethics in America, writing its introduction and preface. His Web site is (geocities.com/HotSprings/Spa/3189).

Sheldon S. Toll C’62, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., a partner in the Detroit law firm of Honigman, Miller, Schwartz & Cohn, spoke at the Asbestos Litigation 2000 Conference in May. He represented the Asbestos Health Claimants Committee (1991-97) in the Celotex bankruptcy case in Tampa, Fla.; the company’s re-organization was one of the largest and most complex Chapter 11 cases ever filed, with a $1 billion trust fund established to pay the asbestos victims.

Lee Copeland GAr’63 GCP’63 GFA’63, the Daley Professor Emeritus of Architecture and City Planning, has been a principal for the past six years in the Seattle firm of Weinstein Copeland, Architects. In May he received the AIA Seattle Medal for a “distinguished lifetime achievement in architecture, including design and professional practice, and service to the profession, the community, education and the arts.”

Joan L. Sandler Forman CW’63 Ed’68 has very much enjoyed herself since she retired from teaching in the Philadelphia school system in June last year. Beryl Lieff Benderly CW’64 G’64 received the June Roth Memorial Award for Medical Journalism in the magazine category at this year’s annual meeting of the American Society of Journalists and Authors.

Andrew Epstein C’64 L’67 has joined the West Orange, N.J., law firm of Lampf, Lipkind, Prupis & Pettigrow, P.A., as a litigation partner. He is married to Myra Wiener Epstein CW’66.

Dr. J. A. Leo Lemay Gr’64, the H. F. du Pont Winterthur Professor of English Literature at the University of Delaware, last December was named Honored Scholar of Early American Literature by the Modern Language Association. He is writing what the MLA describes as “the definitive biography” of Benjamin Franklin. A seven-volume work, it is based on his Web site, Benjamin Franklin: A Documentary History(www.english.udel.edu/lemay/franklin/).

Hyman Myers Ar’64 GAr’65, principal, chief preservation architect and director of historic-preservation programs at the Philadelphia firm of Vitetta Architects and Engineers, received this year’s History and Heritage Award from the Philadelphia section of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He and his wife, Sandra Kittner Myers CW’63,live in Merion, Pa.

John Henry Alvarez Correa W’65 and Jeanette Alvarez Correa CW’66 write of the wedding of their daughter, Susan Rachelle Alvarez Correa W’92, to José Mauricio Silva Aguilar at the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue in Willemstad, Curaçao, on March 25. Robert S. Blank L’65 is co-chair and co-CEO of Whitney Communications Co., an owner and operator of newspapers and cable-television systems, and senior partner of Whitcom Partners in New York. In January he was appointed to a five-year term as an alumni trustee of the University.

Kathleen Hill Zichy CW’66 WG’71, senior vice president for corporate development at the NYU Downtown Hospital, announces the engagement of her daughter, Elizabeth Ann Zichy, a certified transplant coordinator for the New York Organ Donor Network, to Michael A. Kelly, an assistant stock trader with Letco Specialists; a September wedding is planned.

Thomas R. Bond CGS’67, Philadelphia, director of the workers’ compensation group in the regional defense-litigation law firm of Marshall, Dennehey, Warner, Coleman & Coggin, was recently elected a member of the Federation of Insurance & Corporate Counsel. In March he spoke on CLE II to the Insurance Society of Philadelphia.

Paul C. Williams W’67 directs the exchange-traded funds and global-market development group at John Nuveen & Co., Inc., in Chicago; he is responsible for product management of the company’s $30 billion exchange-traded fund complex and new-product development. Having served as an overseer of the School of Arts and Sciences since 1994, in January he was appointed an alumni trustee of the University.

Dr. Sheldon L. Gerstenfeld V’68 recently published his eighth book, The ASPCA Complete Guide To Dogs (Chronicle Books). He was also cited by Philadelphia magazine (February) as being one of the “23 Great Vets” in the Delaware Valley.

Lawrence C. Nussdorf W’68 is president of Clark Enterprises, Inc., and vice president and treasurer of its subsidiary, The Clark Construction Group, Inc., the nation’s largest privately-owned building contractor. In January he was appointed an alumni trustee of the University.

Adrian L. DiLuzio C’69 L’72 and his wife, Kim, “greeted the arrival of our sixth child, Jamie, on Dec. 2. He joins Zachary (eight), Rachel (seven), Jeremy (six), Jesse (three) and Rebecca (two). With reference to me and not Kim, who is a mere 36 years of age, I suppose one can refer to this as a late start. On the other hand, it’s beginning to look like a late finish as well.”

Dr. William R. Ferris Jr. Gr’69, chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities, spoke at the spring convocation of Davidson College in North Carolina; he is also a 1964 graduate of that college.

Dr. David “Murph” Henkel C’69 G’69 <[email protected]> next month becomes director of the community and regional planning program at the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of New Mexico. The program offers graduate degrees in planning, and several dual degrees with Latin American studies, public administration, public health, and soon an undergraduate degree in environmental design.

Marc B. Lasky C’69 has become resident partner in the energy, utility and infrastructure group of Thelen Reid & Priest LLP, in its recently opened office in Morristown, N.J.

Karen J Orlin CW’69, Coral Gables, Fla., has been of counsel to the law firm of Akerman, Senterfitt & Eidson, P.A., since mid-October; based in its downtown Miami office, she specializes in general corporate, securities, mergers and acquisitions, and commercial-finance matters. “I am proud to report that, within my law firm, all ethnic, racial and religious groups enjoy a collegial, cooperative and professional environment, regardless what may occur from time to time a few blocks from our office building.” Karen currently serves on the professional-ethics committee and the corporations and securities committee of the Florida Bar. Her daughter received a B.A., with a major in architecture and minors in anthropology and ballet, in May, and plans to work in New York, Washington or Chicago before applying to graduate school: “any of these cities will be exciting places for me to visit her, although I currently plan to reside in South Florida indefinitely (I enjoyed visiting her in Florence during summer 1999, where she attended summer school). My ‘empty nester’ goals include learning to play the piano, increased bicycle riding, pursuing my auctioneering avocation, enjoying more theatre and dance performances, traveling, and writing non-technical material for publication. Although I enjoyed our 30th Class Reunion, I do not currently plan to return to the Northeast before our 35th Reunion, otherwise than for business (I am a member of the New York Bar) or visits to my daughter and other family. I hope to entertain my classmates when they travel to South Florida.”

1970s

John H. McKoy GCP’70 in April was appointed president and chief executive officer of DC Agenda, a community-assistance organization whose purpose is “to strengthen civic life and improve local government functions in Washington.” Skip joined the agency in 1997 and was soon appointed its executive vice president.

Bernard Schenkler C’70 <[email protected]> has become of counsel to Orloff, Lowenbach, Stifelman & Siegel, P.A., in Roseland, N.J., where he practices commercial litigation. He also recently became a black belt in Isshyn Ryu karate.

Toni Schmiegelow CW’70 e-mails that “our classmate, Linda Cheatham CW’70, is a candidate for the school board in Alexandria, Va.”

Robert R. Tarter Jr. W’70 has been appointed executive vice president and a member of the executive operating group of State Street Corporation in Boston, a servicer of investment assets for institutional investors. He is responsible for the global performance and analytics business; previously he was senior vice president and director of sales and marketing in the institutional-investor services division. Robert and his wife, June, live in Dover, a suburb of Boston.

Gary S. Young C’70 is a law partner in the firm of Mandelbaum, Salsburg in West Orange, N.J. His wife, Wendy, is a hearing officer with the New Jersey Public Employment Relations Commission. Of their children, Rebecca is in her first year at Seton Hall Law School, Jonathan is a junior at the College of William & Mary and William will be a College freshman at Penn this fall.

Sam Kauffmann C’72, was promoted to associate professor of film at Boston University, where he teaches courses in film production and film editing. His book on the editing system used to cut nearly all feature films and network television shows, Avid Editing: A Guide for Beginning and Intermediate Users, was recently published by Focal Press.

Deborah Forbes Lindell GNu’72, an instructor in community-health nursing at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western University, is assisting a project of faculty and students from both CWR and the University of Virginia to provide nursing services and health education in a Mexican village, 20 miles from Mexico City.

David Tulowitzki C’72, district attorney for Cambria County, Pa., received a distinguished-service award from the alumni association of the Dickinson School of Law of Pennsylvania State University.

Dr. Lawrence R. Beaber Gr’73 <[email protected]>, history assessment specialist with the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, N.J., was awarded a Freeman fellowship by the China Institute in New York to participate in a two-week series of workshops and historical-site visits conducted by Chinese historians at universities in Beijing, Chengdu and Xi’an; this is for his work preparing for the new College Board Advanced Placement world-history course and examination, to be offered for the first time in 2001-2. Employed by ETS since 1970, he also works with the committees of historians who create the AP European history course and examination, and the SAT II World History Test. His spouse, Patricia Vasel Beaber G’67<[email protected]>, is head reference librarian at the College of New Jersey in Ewing.

Robert B. Drumheller C’73 <[email protected]> recently left the old Mobil Corporation after 24 years and has joined the federal Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) as vice president for finance. He lives in Potomac, Md., with his wife, Debra, and two children, Byron and Chelsea. “Byron is finishing 10th grade, and we are hoping he will become the third generation in the family to attend the University of Pennsylvania.”

Lawrence Finkelstein W’73 L’76 <[email protected]>, a partner and co-chair of the tax and fiduciary department of the Philadelphia law firm Blank, Rome, Comisky & McCauley LLP, was recently honored as man-of-the-year by the Philadelphia/Delaware Valley chapter of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America. Currently he is chair of the chapter, having served as president for four years. “I am the father of Andrew Finkelstein W’02. My wife, Barbara, and I will celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary in August.”

Dr. Joseph M. Furman C/EE’73 M’77 Gr’79, a member of the otolaryngology department at the University of Pittsburgh, co-wrote an article on benign paroxysmal positional vertigo that was published last November in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Dr. Stanley A. Glassman C’73 <[email protected]> was proud to attend this year’s Commencement, as his son, Mark Glassman, joined the family ranks of alumni with his graduation from the College of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Jack M. Gorman C’73 and Dr. Lauren Kantor Gorman CW’73 are proud that the oldest of their two daughters, Rachel, received early-decision acceptance and will be a freshman at Penn this fall. Jack is now the Lieber Professor and vice-chair for research in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University and director of the Mental Health Clinical Research Center for Schizophrenia Research there. Lauren maintains a private psychiatric practice in New York. Another daughter, Sara, is a freshman at the Horace Mann School.

Roger Marks C/W’73 has been appointed president of the international division of H2O Plus, Inc., a worldwide manufacturer and retailer of skincare, bath and body products, and cosmetics. He also assumes the position of senior vice president, general counsel and secretary of the company. When not traveling for business, Roger and his wife, Debbie, a clinical psychologist, travel to remote corners of the globe to observe and photograph tribal ceremonies and rituals.

David D. Schein C’73 <[email protected]> relocated his law and mediation practice to Alexandria, Va. He helps businesses prevent and solve problems in the human-resources area.

James H. Brothers IV C’74 and Joanne Hehre Brothers C’77 e-mail that their daughter, Nancy Chance Brothers, was admitted, early decision, to Wellesley College. She had also been awarded a four-year U.S. Air Force scholarship, and she made the distinguished honor roll last fall at the Chesterfield Mathematics and Science High School in Virginia.

Dr. Michael H. Harrison Gr’74 recently stepped down as president of Behavioral Healthcare Network, Inc., which he helped found in 1994. He will focus on his private practice as a psychologist in Orchard Park, N.Y.

Sheila Biberman Leventhal CW’74 G’74 L’77 has been promoted to managing editor, state and local taxes, at the Research Institute of America. She lives in Edison, N.J., with her husband and 17-year old daughter, Jessica. Her son, Danny, is a sophomore at the University of Delaware.

Randi Faith Mezzy CW’74 <[email protected]> is the “proud mom of two wonderful teenage boys: David, a freshman at Bard College (of Steely Dan fame) and Andrew, an 8th-grader at Hamden [Conn.] Middle School. They are both avid music fans and have been drilled since birth to name songs on the radio in three notes. Two summers ago, the three of us made the pilgrimage to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland: it was amazing. I am a legal-aid attorney specializing in public benefits and get paid to be righteously indignant on a daily basis, most recently serving as co-counsel in federal litigation v. evil HMOs who dare to deny my poor clients medically necessary treatment and don’t even bother to give them notice of the denial. I was happily unmarried in 1998, and enjoyed the 25th Reunion in 1999. Still friends with Dr. Linda Hamashima CW’74 GEd’75 Gr’81, Susanna Lachs CW’74 ASC’76 and Dr. Danielle Volckmar Kulicke CW’74, who were on my floor in Ashhurst-Magee freshman year. No one else on earth gets the joke like Penn alums.”

Marjorie Woldow Plackter CW’74 is a lawyer and the pro-bono coordinator for Cape-Atlantic Legal Services, Inc., in Atlantic City, N.J. “I am married to Jack, managing partner of an Atlantic City firm which just merged with the Philadelphia firm of Fox, Rothschild, O’Brien and Frankel. I am pleased that my son, Rick, will be a freshman at Penn next year; he will join his sister, Lauren Plackter C’02.

Jack Rubin WG’75 joined Hotel Reservations Network, Inc., late last year as chief financial and strategic officer; based in Dallas, the Internet company provides discount hotel accommodations worldwide. Less than two months after his joining, it completed an IPO and trades under “ROOM” on Nasdaq. Jack previously was a senior vice president of NCH Corp., responsible for a portfolio of distribution and manufacturing companies, and concurrently served as CEO of multiple subsidiaries during periods of high growth and industry consolidations. He initiated, completed and integrated over 20 acquisitions and multiple divestitures in the U.S. and other countries. Jack and his wife, Marilyn, live in Dallas; their son, Daniel, graduated from Northwestern and now works in Connecticut; daughter Lindsay is a sophomore at Stanford.

Barbara Dooner Brzowski Nu’76 received a post-master’s certificate from the University of Delaware in December, as a women’s health nurse practitioner.

Barry M. Hartman C’76 was appointed in March to senior vice president and general counsel of Horsehead Industries, Inc., in New York. It is the parent company of ZCA, a prominent producer of zinc in the country and of value-added zinc products worldwide, and HRD, a recycling firm that services the mini-mill steel industry. He had been a partner in the law firm of Kirkpatrick & Lockhart, LLP, in Washington.

Elaine Yannone McGowan Nu’76 is a wound-outcomes manager for the Hill-Rom Company in Batesville, Ind. She co-wrote a journal article, in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (1998), that described the clinical and financial outcomes of a four-year wound-care program at an acute-care hospital where she served as a consultant.

Gary Mendell C’76, president and founder of Meridian Finance Group in Los Angeles (www.meridianfinance.com), was recognized in April with an award from the Export-Import Bank of the U.S., for helping American exporters expand and finance their international sales. Gary’s company specializes in cross-border financing, especially for companies which are trying to penetrate emerging foreign markets.

David L. Chanko W’77 was recently appointed finance director of the City of El Mirage, a suburb of Phoenix, Ariz. Previously he had been the finance director of Ontario, Ore., and the banking-relations manager of New York City.

Joan Tabb-Waisbein CW’77 married in 1998 for the first time and is the proud mother of Daniel. She has been in Silicon Valley since 1980, managing marketing organizations for high-tech companies. In 1992 she started her own consultancy practice, branding and launching high-tech start-ups. He continues to practice general and business litigation, dispute-resolution and real estate law; his new firm concentrates its transactional and litigation practice in banking, cooperative and condominium real estate, and general corporate law. “I am in my 11th year as a member of the New York Virtuosi Chamber Symphony, a not-for-profit orchestral organization dedicated to presenting quality musical performances in concerts throughout the New York metropolitan area, on international tours and in recordings. It also participates actively in youth education, with an emphasis on exposing underprivileged children to classical and other orchestral music. My wife, Daryle, and I finally have developed the wisdom to realize, and intestinal fortitude to acknowledge, that our nine-year-old twins, Harlan and Rachel, run the household.”

Dr. Graham Gaylord Ashmead M’78, director of the fetal diagnostic center at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, gave a series of lectures last fall in Volgograd, Russia, on maternal-fetal medicine, fetal ultrasound diagnosis and in-utero fetal surgery. The lectures were sponsored by hospitals in Cleveland and Volgograd, twinned cities. “Maternal and fetal mortality are many times higher in Russia, while basics, such as antibiotics, blood for transfusions and good prenatal care, are difficult to obtain. The average Volgograd doctor earns only 800 rubles ($32 in 1999) a month … My daughter, Alexandra Ashmead is now 15-plus, doing well in school (advanced-placement and A’s), and unimpressed that her allowance per month is more than the average physician’s monthly salary in Russia. To quote Alexa, ‘This is America!’ Hard to believe I now have a teenager: it seems only yesterday I was in anatomy lab at Penn Med. Currently I am treasurer for the Cleveland Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and have been nominated as president-elect for 2000 to 2001.”

Dr. Wayne L. Goldner M’78 and Laura H. Goldner GEd’78 have made Live Free or Die, “a documentary chronicling our family’s fight for women’s reproductive rights. It is expected to get significant national attention.” It was shown at the International Human Rights Film Festival at Lincoln Center in June and will be broadcast nationally on PBS on Sept. 26. To quote the press release: “It tells the story of Dr. Wayne Goldner, a Bedford, N.H., obstetrician-gynecologist, who has chosen to perform abortions as part of his practice. The film shows the dramatic effect Dr. Goldner’s pro-choice stance and actions have on his personal and professional life. He becomes deeply involved in the merger of two local hospitals (one non-sectarian, the other Roman Catholic) fearing that the union will undermine women’s health care. We watch as Dr. Goldner fights to continue his volunteer teaching in the local school system after anti-choice activists frighten the school board into having him dismissed. Set against the climate of fear created by anti-choice protestors, the film shows the costs incurred by physicians dedicated to the ideal of women’s reproductive rights.” Wayne will also be featured in a 60 Minutes story by Morley Safer.

Dr. Maryanne McGuckin GEd’79 GrEd’81, a senior researcher in Penn’s Department of Medicine, spent the 1998-99 academic year as a visiting researcher at the University of Oxford, studying the local healthcare system. Her husband accompanied her with their two children, “who loved attending (high) school in Oxford and rowing on the Thames.” Following her research in this country (described in “Gazetteer,” November 1997), she started a hand-washing monitoring project in an Oxford hospital. The program has now been adopted elsewhere in the U.K., and in Sweden, Germany and France. In this country, a company has been licensed to introduce it nationally, and by this spring more than 1,000 hospitals had requested implementation.

Dr. Marisa Weiss C’79 M’84, Wynnewood, Pa., a radiation oncologist at Paoli Memorial Hospital, in March received a Take the Lead Award 2000 from the Girl Scouts of Southeastern Pennsylvania, recognizing her achievements in the fields of science and technology.

Andrea Kremer C’80 and her husband, John Steinberg, had their first child, William Raymond Steinberg, on Jan. 26. “John and I live in Los Angeles, where he teaches archaeology at UCLA and I am the national correspondent for ESPN. Will arrived a month early and was born in Atlanta where I was working the Super Bowl for ESPN and ABC Sports. He flew home at 11 days old and has been doing just great since then.”

Dr. Margaret K. Willard-Traub C’80 completed a Ph.D. in English and education at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1998, “married a wonderful man named Paul the same year,” and now is assistant professor of rhetoric at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich.

Dr. Cory F. Newman C’81, director of Penn’s Center for Cognitive Therapy, has been promoted to associate professor of psychology in the Department of Psychiatry. Summers C’81 M’88 Gr’88 GM’89<[email protected]>, a radiologist and researcher at the Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center at the NIH, in April received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. He was selected for the award, one of only two given this year to NIH intramural researchers, for his research “developing special radiologic-visualization techniques, such as virtual-reality presentations, that permit doctors and patients to better understand disease and better plan treatment.” Ron and his wife, Nancy Finkelstein Summers C’77 L’84, live in Potomac, Md. “Nancy has ‘retired’ from the practice of law and is enjoying the world of non-paying work.”

I lived in Manhattan 1986-96, and have since lived in Summit N.J., striving to enjoy as dull a bourgeois existence as I am able to attain. I got a master’s degree in statistics from City University of New York in 1992. Yes, night school. On the professional side, or what-I-have-been-doing-for-money side, I’ve worked on Wall Street since I got out of school. I have been a member of the American Stock Exchange and have worked at various investment firms, generally called hedge funds, since 1986. I was the head U.S. equity trader at the hedge fund D. E. Shaw and Co., which some people may have heard of, from 1989 to 1994, and have since been a portfolio manager for another hedge fund, Millennium Partners LP (which very few people if anybody has probably heard of—we like it that way) and have been not unsuccessful at it. David R. Goffin C’90 married Jody Ann Sabah at the Sephardic Temple in Westwood, Calif., on Feb. 26. He had worked in Boston for five years as a consultant with Corporate Decisions Inc., a strategy consulting firm, but 
left to pursue a career in entertainment; he completed a master’s degree in motion picture and television producing at the University of Southern California Graduate School of Cinema-Television in 1997. After stints as a creative executive at MGM and Columbia Pictures, David currently works as a senior producer at Fox Sports Network in Los Angeles. Jody is a third-grade teacher at the Westwood Charter School. They live in Encino.

Michael Hartman W’90 is a director of marketing at Pepsi-Cola, running the Lipton Brisk brand. Emily Levin Mendell W’90 <[email protected]> and her husband, David Mendell C’90, live in Media, Pa., and are enjoying their two sons, Noah (almost three) and Chase (eight months). “I am working from my home office as a senior counsel to The Weiser Group, a PR/communications agency in New York and Chicago. After working at AMS since graduation, Jeff moved to The Washington Post a year ago, where he is director of advanced systems; he remains “fascinated by the process of churning out an outstanding newspaper every day.” He and Melissa live a short distance from the Post in a townhouse in the Foggy Bottom section. Bernstein W’92 e-mails from Shanghai that he has started a new company, Emerge Logistics. “After my partner’s acquisition of my investors’ and my stake in EverReach, I have decided to develop a new business related to distribution logistics: Emerge Logistics is poised to capture the burgeoning market for e-commerce and office and distribution logistics services in China. (This industry, called fulfillment, sprouted up in the U.S. in the aftermath of the big bang of e-business, and is now due for arrival in China.) Internet usership [here] skyrocketed from 9 million to 40 million over a year and half, and new, commerce-related Web sites are sprouting up by the dozens. Reports commonly cite “poor logistics” as the major limitor of e-business in China, with little hope for improvement on the horizon. Enter Emerge. Karyn J. Smith W’94 graduated from the University of Miami School of Law in May, and is now an associate with the law firm of Bilzin, Sumberg, Dunn, Price & Axelrod.

Aaron A. Wernick C’94 <[email protected]> taught, through a Penn program, at Fudon University in Shanghai for one year, then went to law school at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, graduating at the top of his class. Instead of practicing law, he moved to Flagstaff, Ariz., and started a shuttle business from scratch. Called Switchback Shuttle, it services aiports in Arizona, has more than a dozen employees and the flights are frequently booked. Aaron recently signed on with Amtrak, so shuttle customers can book through it.

Troy J. Prinkey C’95 <[email protected]>, currently at the University of Virginia, successfully completed exams as requirements for a doctoral degree in Hispanic literature. The areas examined were contemporary peninsular literature, peninsular realism to the generation of 1898, 19th-century Latin American literature and contemporary Latin American literature. In addition to recovering, he is also making preparations for fellowship-sponsored travel to Resistencia, Argentina, to conduct research for his dissertation. While there he will participate in a program, “Literatura Argentina en la Argentina: crítica y creación,” at which the prominent Argentine authors, Mempo Giardinelli, Luisa Valenzuela and Reina Roffé, will be in residence.

Dr. Melissa Rosin C’95 is pleased to announce that after several years in school on the East Coast, she is finally returning to sunny southern California. Melissa received her medical degree from Pennsylvania State University in May, and is completing a residency in pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Orange County.

Wendy Byrd C’96 announces her engagement to Jason Marks; the wedding is set for June 2001. She recently completed a master’s degree in elementary education and now teaches first grade in New York. He is a talent agent.

Silas Deane GPU’96 was in April named president and chief executive officer of Logic Media Group, a Nashville, Tenn.-based full-service public relations firm with an emphasis on technology-driven companies. He joined the company after his previous firm, Deane Communications Group, was acquired by LMG in 1999. Prior to founding it, Silas was a senior account supervisor at Atkinson Public Relations.

Lauren Abrams C’97 married Scott Anchin W’96 at Brae Burn Country Club in Purchase, N.Y., on June 17. Scott is the son of James Anchin W’65 WG’66. The wedding party included Lee Anchin W’98, Caryn Young C’97, Leah Fischman C’97, Stephanie Kahane Pomerantz C’97, David Fenig C’96, Daniel Abrutyn C’96 and Josh Rosen C’96. “There were many other alumni at the wedding, but too many to list.” Lauren and Scott live in New York, where she works for NetZero, an Internet company, and he is an accountant at Anchin, Block & Anchin.

Scott Friedberg W’97 has joined Mimeo.com, the online, secure, business-document printing, binding and delivery firm based in Memphis, Tenn., as manager of online partnerships.

Amy Krinsley Nu’97 and Lee Huang W’95 tied the knot at Woodland Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia on April 15. The bridal party included Eun-Jin Jeong C’96, Allyson Fuller Felo Nu’97, Kathy O’Brien Nu’97, Ashok Kurian C’96 GEd’99 and Glenn Standifer EAS’97. Amy is a nurse at HUP and Lee works at The Enterprise Center <[email protected]>; they live in University City, where they recently bought a house.

Erica Levine C’97 and Perry Choset C’96 are engaged, and will be married on Dec. 9, at the Woodbury Jewish Center on Long Island. They are looking forward to celebrating with their special Penn friends. Erica is a physician assistant at a family practice in Manhattan, and Perry is an equity analyst for Centurion Investment Group, a Manhattan money-management firm.

Kelly Rivenbark W’97 married Bryan Coffey in an outdoor ceremony at “the gorgeous Meadowlark Gardens” in Vienna, Va., on March 26. Kelly now lives in Annapolis, working as a healthcare consultant. Fellow colleagues Kathy Nguyen C’97, Alicia Peters W’97 and Gloria Yang W’97 (who sent in this note) were bridesmaids, and Ed Lomotan C’97 and Jon Guljord W’97 also attended.

Lindsay B. Waltower CGS’97 successfully completed the MBA program at Eastern College in St. Davids, Pa., majoring in management, finance and entrepreneurship. “Additionally, I am president & CEO of the Waltower Foundation, an Internet startup formed in 1998, that provides human-resource training and information-technology solutions to small and medium-size companies (www.waltowerfoundation.com).”

Hindi Wilding-White W’97 moved from Virginia to Boston in May to pursue a master’s degree in MIS at Boston University. Since graduating, she has been working for American Management Systems, Inc., in Fairfax. “I have been a member of the Alpha Phi Alumni chapter in Northern Virginia, and encourage anyone in a fraternity or sorority to contact their local alumni chapters—it is a great experience. Duncan Alvarez WG’98 and Lucía Santistevan-Alvarez GGS’98 have added a member to their family: Sebastián Mario Alvarez entered the world on March 22; he weighted 6 lbs. 10.5 oz. and measured 19.25 inches. “Both mother and baby are well and dad and sister, Isabel, are very excited.” Duncan and Lucía relocated to the Dallas area as a result of the merger between Exxon and Mobil: Duncan is working in the treasurer’s department at the corporate headquarters in Irving.

Debbie Gortler C’98 <[email protected]> will be entering Penn Dental with the Class of 2004.

Rebecca Seidel C’98 and Dr. Gary Frank M’00 are happy to announce their engagement. She will be a first-year medical student at Jefferson Medical College, beginning in August <[email protected]>. He has begun his pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. They plan to marry in August next year.

Lt. Phoebe S. Choi C’99 <[email protected]> e-mails that “After four challenging years of Navy ROTC, I was finally commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Navy in August 1999.” From November to March she was in division-officer core training at the Surface Warfare Officer School Command in Newport, R.I., then went through billet specialty training, “completing all my training on May 12. After that, Uncle Sam and his Navy are sending me to serve overseas as first lieutenant aboard the USS John S. McCain (DDG-56), forward deployed out of Yokosuka, Japan.” Leaving for Japan in June, she hopes “to be back on U.S. soil after completing my 24-month-long assignment.”

Stephanie S. Hong W’99 <[email protected]> was engaged to Albert I-Ming Chen in February. This month she starts in the media group of Morgan Stanley’s investment-banking division. He is a research specialist at Penn’s Medical School. Their close friends, Stephen L. Chen C’96 and Lisa M. Chang C’96 were married in December 1998; they are both medical students at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine, graduating next June.

Leslie Koo C’99 departed for Haiti in March to begin her Peace Corps service as a small-enterprise development volunteer. Previously she worked for the Corporation for National Service and various U.N. organizations, and volunteered with Amnesty International, UNICEF and a number of tutoring and mentoring projects.

Senior Class Gifts

Never too late: The Brahin family had two causes for celebration at Penn’s Commencement ceremonies in May. Father and son Dr. Conrad M. Brahin C’45 and Eric Brahin EAS’00 both received their diplomas from the University. Conrad’s undergraduate education was interrupted by World War II. During the War, medical schools only required three years of college credit; he left Penn early and earned his medical degree from Hahnemann Medical College in 1948. Eric has been accepted to Penn’s graduate program in bio-medical engineering and will start this fall. Conrad, who retired from medical practice 13 years ago because he has multiple sclerosis, “will continue his retirement from the field of medicine with the happy thought that he will finally be given his B.A. degree.”

In keeping with their apocalyptic graduating year, the Class of 2000 smashed all previous records for senior class gift. The total exceeded $43,000, raised from more than 570 donors. The previous monetary record was $17,851, set by the Class of 1998, and the highest number of donors was 497 in 1994.
The highly visible purpose of the gift—it will fund the Class of 2000 Walk in the Perelman Quadrangle, and seniors who gave $100 or more were able to have their names on the gift plaque—and a year-long effort to build participation through campus signs, mailings, phone and e-mail solicitations, along with the “unselfish hard work of everyone involved” were credited with the unprecedented response.
