Dr. Frank R. Braden Jr. C’30 M’33 writes, “It has been many a year since Class of 1933 and Medicine 1933, and most of those who may have remembered me are long gone. My social fraternity, Sigma Pi, gave up the ghost many years ago as did my medical fraternity, Alpha Kappa Kappa. All of my buddies from Sigma Pi, the close little group, are long dead but there are a few of my medical friends still alive and kicking. When I remarked to Dr. Bernie Behrend C’29 M’33 that there were only 30 some left out of a class of 125 or so—and doubted the veracity of the count—he remarked, ‘Hey, Buck we’re old!’” Dr. Braden was featured in a spread in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in June, describing his recent 90th birthday celebrations and his life and work in Coraopolis, Pa. Still maintaining his practice, he makes house calls—in some cases to folks in their nineties whom he attended high school with. By consulting the computers at Sewickley Valley Hospital he keeps up with his patients there, and sees them every Thursday; he was on staff there for 35 years. Buck even played patient to himself, when he lay in bed reading his own x-rays while recovering from broken ribs after falling on ice in the winter. In the summer, he took a trip to Scotland with his daughter. He quipped in his letter: “… if you ever live long enough, everyone who might remember youthful indiscretions dies off—and you’re home free.”
1940s
Herman M. Steinberg WEv’45 writes that after Penn he was employed as the comptroller of a mutual casualty and fire insurance company, and in 1948 “proceeded to develop my practice in public accounting for the following 40 years or so. I am retired now and living in sunny southern California near our children and grandchildren. My biggest thrill and pleasure came when one of my grandsons, Todd Golditch, was accepted and admitted to the Wharton School where he [has] entered his junior year. Todd has made his parents and grandparent very proud.”
1950s
Norman P. Zarwin C’52 L’55, the senior member of the Philadelphia law firm of Zarwin, Baum, DeVito, Kaplan & O’Donnell, P.C., has a long-term involvement with the retail petroleum industry and its trade associations; in September he spoke on “The Future of Retail Gas Marketing” to a meeting of New Jersey Texaco and Shell gasoline dealers.
Dr. Robert G. Gallager EE’53, professor of electrical engineering and computer science at MIT, in June received this year’s Harvey Prize for science and technology from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel, for “outstanding achievements in industrial microbiology and biotechnology and his unique role in promoting cooperation between industry and academia.”
Harris Ominsky W’53 L’56 is a partner in the law firm of Blank, Rome, Comisky & McCauley LLP, where he practices in the field of real-estate acquisitions, financing and leasing. He led a roundtable at the August ABA annual meeting, and spoke on “Tenants’ Rights to Assign Commercial Leases in Bankruptcy.”
Neil R. Greene Ar’56 <[email protected]> served as chief architect in the U.S. Air Force H.Q. Systems Command, for more than 12 bases 1977-92, and as chief of engineering at Andrews Air Force Base, retiring as chief of planning in 1995. After 31 years with the Air Force Reserve, he retired as an Air Force colonel and the reserve commander of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. And he lectured at various Air Force bases across the country on architecture and urban planning. Currently Neil is a director of the Potomac Valley chapter of the American Institute of Architects (he is a past president), and is chairing a “2020 Vision” seminar on Washington regional planning and transportation for architectural and planning professionals at the AIA national offices. Very involved in planning and transit groups, he is an advocate of the Maryland governor’s “Smart Growth” program.
Dr. Harold P. Koller M’59 has been re-elected to a second term as chair of the ophthalmology section of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He also recently received the Outstanding Tulane Eye Alumnus Award at the Tulane Eye Alumni meeting earlier this year.
Peter Steffian Ar’59 is chair of Steffian Bradley Architects, the Boston firm of 75 architects, interior designers and environmental graphic designers. He was recently elected first vice president, president-elect of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards; he previously served as second vice president and treasurer.

Philip L. Leifer C’60 EE’61 GEE’64 won an Emmy from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences this year for his role as project engineer and chief designer of the Videotek VTM-200, television studio-broadcast equipment for the testing and monitoring of color-television signals. Dr. Michael J. Uricheck C’62, a senior member of the chemistry department at Western Connecticut State University, received its professional-achievement award in recognition of his outstanding work in the field of chemistry. His research has included the chemistry of snake venom and the role of vanadium in the prevention of dental caries.
Kitsie Converse Schelter CW’63 GGS’95 was part of the Expedition Inspiration team climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro in February, to raise money for breast-cancer research. “I was thankful to receive over $16,350 in donations, many of them from my Penn friends. As the result of these contributions, many colorful, personalized tribute flags accompanied me up the mountain. Seeing them flying around the campsites during the week’s trek was an overwhelmingly beautiful sight. A real high.”
Dr. Ronald Jeremiah Schindler C’64 Gr’78 has been reappointed visiting professor of intellectual heritage at Temple University for this academic year.
Dr. Andrew Glass M’65 is senior investigator and director of oncology research at Kaiser Permanente’s Center for Health Research in Portland, Ore. He has extensive experience in designing and implementing breast-cancer clinical trials; two recent projects he has been involved with are the STAR clinical trial and the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast Project. The STAR trial, which began this year, compares tamoxifen and raloxifene to determine the effectiveness for preventing breast cancer and the frequency of side effects; 20,000 women will be administered one of the drugs for five years, and monitored for two years. This year he is conducting a trial to determine the effectiveness after surgery of intensive, short-term treatment as compared to less-intensive, long-term treatment.
Peter Greenberg C’65 L’68, a partner in the law firm of Schnader, Harrison, Segal & Lewis, received the ABA pro bono publico award this year with another partner for their work representing a young woman in Lancaster County (Pa.), currently serving a life sentence for murder; the case is pending before the U.S. Supreme Court and the Pennsylvania Superior Court.

Dr. Happy Craven Fernandez G’70 was appointed president of Philadelphia’s Moore College of Art and Design in August. She had served two terms on the City Council (and also ran as the first woman seeking the Democratic nomination for mayor) and previously was professor of social administration at Temple University and director of its Child Care and Family Policy Institute.
Sherrie Raiken Savett CW’70 L’73 is a partner in the Philadelphia law firm of Berger & Montague, P.C., where she is chair of its securities-litigation department. She was named by Philadelphiamagazine (in its March survey) as one of the best class-action litigation lawyers in the Philadelphia region, citing her successful recent settlement of a record $220 million in cash for shareholders in a federal securities-fraud case. Also, in late May she appeared on CBS Evening News with Dan Rather to discuss securities-fraud litigation.
Jeffrey M. Weingarten W’70, London, announced in September the opening of Buttonwood Capital Partners there; he is one of the principals.

I’m living in London, and in December joined one of my former clients, the owner of Head Holdings (one of the world leaders in tennis, skiing and scuba products under the Head, Tyrolia and Mares brands) to buy additional companies. We were successful in our effort and in May added Penn, the world’s number-one-selling tennis ball to the Head company. On the business front, I am actively looking to buy established private companies with sales in excess of $10 million.”
Geraldine B. Laybourne GEd’71 is chair and CEO of Oxygen Media, a multimedia company she runs with her husband, Kit. She had been at Viacom, instrumental in the creation and development of Nickelodeon, the popular children’s cable-TV network; then was with Disney, running its cable properties. Since leaving there in May of last year, she has built up Oxygen Media. Geraldine was included in the Fortune magazine’s 50 Most Powerful Women (www.pathfinder.com/fortune/mostpowerful). She was quoted, “‘I see some amazing opportunities. … Women are underserved and underestimated as consumers. Plus, the Internet is this phenomenal, organic and democratic vehicle that’s ideal for communicating with women. It will eventually converge with television.’”
Jay Lurch WG’71 <[email protected]> celebrated his 25th anniversary with Kraft Foods on September 30. He is director of sales information for its divisions located in Westchester County, N.Y.
Mona Goldman Yudkoff Nu’71, Bala Cynwyd, Pa., has run, since 1990, Mona Yudkoff Rehab Consultants, which provides private case management to people with catastrophic injuries who are involved in litigation with life-care plans. She is married to Marc Yudkoff; one daughter, Dari, is a junior at Penn, and Aliza and Shira are in high school.
Dr. Carol Lynn Mandle Nu’72 GNu’75 is an associate professor at Boston College and co-director and senior scientist at the Mind Medical Institute of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School. She and her husband, Dr. Robert J. Mandle Jr. Gr’75, recently celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary with their three children, Jonathan, David and Elizabeth.
Dr. Louis E. Baxter Sr. C’73 recently was named the medical director of the physicians’ health program of the Medical Society of New Jersey; this is the first full-time program in the country. Last year named a fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, he serves on a number of state and national committees. He and his wife, Olivia Holmes Baxter, have two children, Louis Jr. and Tia.
Ed Flanagan C’73, the Vermont state auditor, had raised $221,000 in the first half of this year—enough money in the Green Mountain State for a serious bid by him next year for either a congressional or U.S. Senate seat. Being openly gay has not been a setback in past campaigns, as he emphasized his fiscal accomplishments.

Most recently she was deputy treasurer and general counsel for the State of Rhode Island. Neil Groberg W’75 opened a law practice last year in Middlefield, Conn., after almost 20 years as an employment attorney in a variety of for-profit and non-profit institutions and government. Sunny Mindel SAMP’76 was appointed press secretary to New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani in June; she had been director of public affairs in the Mayor’s Office for Emergency Management, and earlier, chief spokesperson and press secretary for his re-election campaign in 1997.

Michelle Extract Schimel SAMP’78 is the Democratic candidate for town clerk of North Hempstead, N.Y.; the election is this month (November). Co-founder, with Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, of the Long Island chapter of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, she currently is its co-chair, and serves on the board of the state group. Her husband, Mark Schimel C’77 WG’80, was written about in The New York Times earlier this year for his work with It’s Easy, a Manhattan company that expedites passports and visas for people in a hurry. They live in Great Neck with their two sons, Alex and Spencer.

Kimberly Haas C’79 and John Diliberto C’76 have spent 1999 celebrating the 10th anniversary of their daily national radio program, Echoes (www.echoes.org). Heard on over 150 Public Radio International stations from Puerto Rico to Alaska, it is “a soundscape of world fusion and ambient music, with interviews and concerts.” They commemorated the actual anniversary with special programs of their top ten artists, and the top ten musical trends of the past decade.

Carl Loo W’79 has started NextEd, a Hong Kong-based provider of infrastructure for universities, corporate training organizations and adult-education providers to market their courses on the Internet. Katherine E. Newmann C’80 married John R. Enea on May 16. They are both on the staff of the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, N.J., a state regional theater.
Randi Brosterman W’81 WG’88 was recently made a partner at Deloitte & Touche LLP. The financial-services industry leader for the New York tri-state region management solutions and services practice within Deloitte, she is a consultant to securities and investments firms on operations and information technology. Randi married Bob Hutchens WG’88 nine years ago, and they have two beautiful children, Jonathan (five) and Jennifer (three). Bob is a principal with A.T. Kearney, a management-consulting firm in New York; one of his responsibilities is leading its recruiting efforts at Wharton this academic year. In September, Randi and Bob moved from Manhattan to a new home in Chappaqua, N.Y.

Michael Simon C’81 has been appointed president of American Corporate Services, an international investment-banking firm; he joined the company in 1984 and served as managing director since 1989, instrumental in its overseas expansion. Dr. Deborah D. Wright C’81 successfully completed a doctor of psychology degree, specializing in organizational psychology, from Rutgers University in May. For this academic year she has accepted a one-year, renewable, full-time adjunct teaching position at Beaver College, and is “working with a national consulting group whose areas of expertise include call-center environments and telecommunications. And if that’s not enough, I also provide organizational consulting services to local businesses in the Delaware Valley area. As you can see, I’ve been quite busy during my post-Penn days. Although completing the doctoral degree was an arduous task, I feel it was well worth the investment. In some ways, there is a sense of joy and understanding that all things are possible; a feeling of personal accomplishment that I have not experienced since the day I graduated from Penn.”

Dew C’83 <[email protected]> continues to provide a variety of legal services in areas ranging from IT to HR for the U.S. subsidiary of the recently merged French health and beauty conglomerate, Sanofi-Synthelabo. He and his wife, Lynda, welcomed the arrival of their first child, a boy, in the middle of the night on May 3; his name is Ian William—and Kevin’s “former work-study colleagues from the Financial Aid Office are invited to figure out the pun(s).”
Howard Leist C/EAS’83 has been appointed director of architectural design for Swanke Hayden Connell Architects in New York. He had both large- and small-firm experience, being the design leader on projects in this country and overseas, including the China Overseas Building in Shanghai and the Korean Army Pension Tower in Seoul.

Prendergast C’83 <[email protected]> recently accepted the position of senior director in cancer research at DuPont Pharmaceuticals, where his research group located last summer from the Wistar Institute at Penn. A small laboratory will remain at Wistar as will appointments there and George will be on staff at the Department of Genetics as adjunct associate professor. “At DuPont we aim to develop a novel cell-death process we discovered at Wistar to attack advanced cancer.”
Peter Schakowitz C’83, his wife, Kathy and their daughter, Carly, are happy to announce the birth of Carly’s little sister, Casey Rose, who was born in Beverly Hills, Calif., on June 29. Peter has an overall development deal with Jonathan Goodson Productions in Hollywood, heading its Reality Television department and being in charge of development and production of a number of television programs. He is currently in production on several pilots for CBS Eyemark, Tribune Broadcasting and Barry Diller’s Studios USA. He “misses New York terribly. Cantor Howard A. Shalowitz C’83, an attorney in St. Louis, recently was awarded the highest accolade of an AV rating from Martindale Hubbell, after only 10 years in practice. He was also elected treasurer of the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis. He still serves as cantor throughout North America and officiated at Temple Beth Shalom in Roslyn, N.Y., for the High Holy Days this year.
Susan E. Zernik C’83 GEd’96 <[email protected]>, her husband, Chris Mastrangelo, and their daughter, Elisabeth, were thrilled about the arrival of Alexandra Lauren on May 21, 1998. “Everyone seems to be adjusting so far.” Elisabeth completed her first year at a Montessori preschool and is doing extremely well. After five years being the reading specialist at a middle school, Susan is moving to become the reading coordinator at J.E.B. Stuart High School in suburban Virginia. Chris is still working as an independent computer analyst and software developer.
Dr. Cynthia Armstrong Persily GNu’84 GrN’93<[email protected]> was recently appointed associate dean for academic programs with the West Virginia University School of Nursing, southern region, and appointed to the tenured rank of associate professor there. She continues to hold the position of chair for the Charleston division. And she is married to Dr. Eric Persily GM’93, an anesthesiologist in private practice in Charleston; they have two children, Aaron David, born October 13, 1995, and Alexandra Beth, born October 21, 1997.
Alison Towers GAr’84 and Peter Miller C’82 announce the formation of their partnership, Towers & Miller Architects. In practice since March, the new Philadelphia firm has designed institutional and residential projects, including Mishkan Shalom, a new synagogue in a former mill building in Manayunk, and two houses in Cape May Point, N.J.
Suzanne Carter CAS’85 <[email protected]> is the principal research coordinator for an NIH study to determine whether pregnancy screening for Down syndrome is better in the first or second trimesters. The study is being conducted at the Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, where she was recently promoted to senior genetic counselor. Additionally, she has won several national and international prizes for her nature photography.
Dr. D. Christopher Chung C’85 <[email protected]> and his wife, Debbie, happily announce the birth of their son Nicholas Grant in April. He joins older sister Phoebe Noelle, who is now two years old. Chris is completing his residency in pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Sheryl Cohen Greenberg C’86 and Lawrence Greenberg W’85 <[email protected]> have moved north from New York to Briarcliff Manor in Westchester County where they live with their two sons, Daniel (almost five years old) and Michael (21 months), and their 12-year-old cocker spaniel, Samantha. Sheryl and Lawrence both continue to work in New York: Sheryl as vice president and group head of the Royal Bank of Canada’s USA credit and lending management group and Lawrence as president of Pearlgreen Corp., a family-owned business that distributes contractor and janitorial maintenance supplies. The family has taken very well to suburban life and continue to keep in close contact with many Penn friends in the area.

Kris Muench C’86 currently serves as the intelligence-systems officer for III (US) Corps at Fort Hood, Texas, “the largest and most powerful combat organization in the free world.” He had e-mailed that he was to “activate and assume command of a new military-intelligence company, the Analysis and Control Element (ACE) of 1st Cavalry Division in October.” A former insurance and securities broker, Kris has served as a brigade intelligence officer in the 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized), the Army’s experimental force, and as an air-defense artillery officer in Germany. He spends his free time pondering the wisdom of his “mentor and spiritual guide, Joe Murphy of Murphy’s Tavern fame.”

Hoyt had been senior associate in the corporate-securities department of Brown & Wood LLP. In 1995 he took a leave of absence from that firm to serve as the first law clerk to the president of the South African Constitutional Court during its inaugural session.

Noah Isenberg C’89 wrote Between Redemption and Doom: The Strains of German-Jewish Modernism, which was published by the University of Nebraska Press in May. A review in Publishers Weekly(June 28) called it “a provocative account of the complexitites of German-Jewish identity in Weimar modernism.”

They had their first round of funding in mid-October.

Meesh Joslyn W’93 WG’98 <[email protected]> and Mydung Tran W’92 <[email protected]> have “left the corporate world to take our Internet start-up, snacki.com, to new heights.” L.A.-based and launched in mid-October, the company caters to universities and student organizations so that customers can upload their own graphics, design their own tee-shirts and hats for events, and pay for everything online. They had their first round of funding in mid-October.
Garrett C. Klein C’93 <[email protected]> and his wife, Stacy, are proud to announce the birth of their son, Bennett Derby, on May 9. “Despite being born nine weeks early, he is doing very well and was 6 lbs. 1 oz. on his original due date of July 9.” The Kleins live in Nashville, where Garrett was recently promoted to associate director of admissions at Vanderbilt University and Stacy teaches physics and advanced mathematics at the University School of Nashville.
Rebecca Bergman Maher Nu’93 married Christopher Maher in Door County, Wisc., on June 26. After graduating from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a master’s in nursing in December 1997, Becky has been working as a certified pediatric nurse practitioner at the Taft Healthy Start Clinic in Redwood City, Calif.; she and Chris live in San Francisco.

Newberry C’93 <[email protected]> and his wife, Beth, have bought an old farm house in Union Village, R.I., “partly to finally get away from congested city life and partly so that our daughter and any other children we might have can attend public schools when that time comes.” Brian has co-founded an appellate-practice group at his law firm specializing in handling both civil and criminal appeals in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. His primary focus is still commercial litigation, but he hopes to develop more specialty appellate work over the years as well as branch out into Internet and high-technology law.
Evelyn S. Pan C’93 <[email protected]> married Paul S. Bavier in Middlebury, Vt., on August 21. They now live in the Boston area, where Evelyn has recently begun work in exhibition and grants management at the Harvard University art museums; Paul is an associate at Ropes & Gray in Boston.
Ryan C. Seiger C’93 <[email protected]> was recently appointed counsel to the Subcommittee on Water Resources and the Environment of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. He lives with his wife, Danielle, in Springfield, Va.

Dave Sterling C’93 <[email protected]> received his MBA in finance and competitve and organizational strategy from the William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Rochester in June. He lives in Arlington, Va., and is a consultant with American Management Systems.

Bowers in Seattle on August 4, 1996. “Several alums made the trek out to the Great Northwest including: Leanne Chukoskie Coleman C’94 and Jeff Coleman W’94, Sara Jablon C’94, Jen Kershaw Nu’95 GNu’98 and Michael Monson C’94. It was a rare sunny day in Seattle, and a lovely time was had by all.” Hilary is a fourth-year at the University of Washington School of Medicine and planning a career in pediatrics. Dr. Olivia Johnson C’94 M’99 received her M.D. from Penn this past May. She is now deeply in debt, and has “been forced into slave labor at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.” She is also moving into year four with her “commitment-phobic boyfriend, a starving architect.”
Elizabeth Kopple C’94 WG’99 <[email protected]> graduated from the Wharton MBA program in May, and has joined American Express as a manager in the small-business services division in Manhattan. She is also planning a wedding next May to Chuck Gillman W’92.

Paul G. Rozelle C’94 <[email protected]> and his wife, Susan, both graduated from Duke Law School in May, celebrated their fifth anniversary in July and moved to Boston in August. They both will be clerking for Justices on the Massachusetts Appeals Court for a year before practicing law in Boston.
Sabrina Rubin C’94 <[email protected]> married Peter Erdely, a Philadelphia attorney, in July. She is a senior writer at Philadelphia magazine and a contributing writer for Cosmopolitan. “We live in Philly. We were married at my parents’ home in Atlantic Beach, N.Y. Many, many Penn alums attended.”

Jay Yepuri C’94 <[email protected]> is in his third year of medical school at the University of Louisville School of Medicine “here in the Bluegrass State,” after earning an M.S. in neuroscience there last year. He married Soniya C. Gadre in Orlando, Fla., on June 12, and “was fortunate to have Raj Khokha W’94 as my best man. Bouabuchar June Klavikorn Yu C’94 graduated from Columbia Business School last year and is an associate in the real-estate investment-banking group at Prudential Securities. She recently married Patrick Yu; Kulwadee Wangkeo W’94 was one of the bridesmaids at the wedding.
Si Deane GPU’95 <[email protected]> and his wife, Angela, are proud to announce the birth of their second son, Stephen Harrison Deane, on July 16; he was 7 lbs. and 7 oz., and born on the same day as his brother, who is now three years old. The Deanes live in Nashville, where Si is a public-relations and public-affairs consultant.
Eva Domotorffy Nu’95 married Woody Paik C’95 in Cleveland on June 12. Eva’s sister, Katinka Domotorffy C’97, was the maid of honor. Peter Giannakoulis W’95 and Chris Johnson W’95 participated in the ceremony as ushers. “Many other dear alumni friends were in attendance.” Eva and Woody moved from San Diego and Los Angeles, respectively, to New York in August. The newlyweds report that “only the proximity to cheesesteaks, soft pretzels and Penn can offset the fear of cold winter months they developed during their time in sunny California.” Eva, a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, will begin work as a Naval medical recruiter this fall while attending a graduate-nursing program at New York University. Herrmann Nu’95 GNu’98 <[email protected]> has been employed full time by Barrow Neurosurgical Associates in Phoenix, since graduating from the gerontological-nurse-practitioner program in August last year. “I enjoy the challenges of my job, mountain biking, and playing ‘beat the heat.’ I miss Billybob’s chicken cheesesteaks, though.”

G. Talmadge Nix III C’95 <[email protected]> e-mails that “on a financial whim and during a bout of temporary insanity, I recently purchased a 19,000 sq.ft. ‘money pit’ in Sherman, Texas. The former warehouse/department store was in such a state of disrepair the preservation society essentially gave it away on a promise I would do something with it. So I have. In a few months it should house the newly formed office of G. Talmadge Nix III, Attorney at Law. Over the next few years the remaing 17,000 sq.ft. will be converted to commercial and residential space. If you get arrested, divorced, a large object falls on you or you need a funky loft apartment in north Texas, then I am your man. Or just call to say hello; I am accepting all lawyer/slumlord jokes.”

Benjamin Prusky EAS’96 was appointed in August to head the newly opened New York office of Omnient Corporation. Rana Prasad EAS’96 joined the firm in September as strategic director of the New York office. He had previously been with Ernst & Young’s management-consulting practice. Michael T. Upshur C’96 <[email protected]> was recently promoted within the Vanguard Group to management trainee in the institutional division. He will handle matters for clients with 401(k) and 403(b)(7) retirement plans managed by Vanguard. The promotion moves him and his family back into the Delaware Valley.
Stephanie C. Boddie SW’97 <[email protected]> is a Fontaine fellow completing her doctoral studies at Penn in social welfare. She was recognized by the Penn faculty as outstanding doctoral student, and as an emerging scholar by the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action for her research on religious congregations and their social and community involvement. She also received a dissertation grant from the Indiana University Center for Philanthropy. Recently she presented the findings from a new national study on congregations and social services at the Inter-University Consortium for International Social Development in Capetown, South Africa. Her research led her to co-write, with her faculty adviser, Dr. Ram Cnaan, The Newer Deal: Social Work and Religion in Partnership.
Saikat Chaudhuri EAS/W’97 has left his position in corporate development at Mannesmann, having received a fellowship to pursue a doctorate at Harvard Business School. “This move comes earlier than planned, as some research of mine on high-tech acquisitions from Stanford has been published: the September-October 1999 issue of Harvard Business Review carries an article of mine, and I have the great honor of having become the youngest author in the history of the journal! Ross B. Nicholas C’97 has joined the North Highland Company, an Atlanta management-services firm, as a consultant specializing in call-center and help-desk development.
Justin Piergrossi W’97 became an assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of San Francisco in June; it is a division-I school and competes in the West Coast conference. He is responsible for monitoring academic progress, scouting opponents, running individual workouts, film exchange and numerous other tasks. The season opens up at the University of Maryland in the pre-season NIT on November 17. Justin had spent the last two seasons coaching at Hanover College in Indiana.
Keren Polsky Rabin C’97 and Ira Rabin C’95<[email protected]> were married in Chicago on June 21, 1998. Many alumni and current students attended the simcha. Keren is entering her third year at Harvard Law School, although she will complete this year as a visiting student at Penn Law School. After a year of research in Boston, Ira has returned to Jefferson Medical College, where he is a third-year medical student. Jonathan M. Miller W’98 <[email protected]> married Sari Beth Oppenheim in Feasterville, Pa., on June 27. They honeymooned in Hawaii, and now live in Bethlehem, where Jonathan works in the purchasing department of Bethlehem Steel and Sari teaches elementary school.
Nina Young Smith C’98 married Daniel Smith on June 19. Laura Ardizzone C’99 <[email protected]> moved to Manhattan and works at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center on a thoracic medical/surgical unit. She lives with two other Penn graduates, Crystal Caliguiri W’99 and Audrey Heinel Nu’99. Audrey also works at Sloan-Kettering, on a neuro-surgical floor. “We are all loving every moment of it, but working very hard.”
Dina Bass C’99 married Jon Kaufthal C’99 on August 22. Edward Mercado W’99 recently moved to Los Angeles, where he is pursuing a career in film; he hopes to “join the ranks of other esteemed Penn alumni such as Marc Platt C’79 and Stacey Snider C’82.” He also writes that Erick Wollschlager W’99 has moved to Lyons in France, and is teaching English to French high-school students while attending classes at university there.
