1930s

Capt. Herbert F. Rommel WEv’39 retired from the U.S. Navy in 1969 and lives in Newport, R.I. He e-mails, “My certificate of proficiency from the Evening School was instrumental in getting a commission as an ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve. [I] was on board USS Oklahoma at Pearl, and commanded a destroyer on a radar picket station at Okinawa. We had as instructors at the Evening School giants who wrote the text books: Sullivan for law, Heebner for insurance, Parker for finance.”

1940s

Dr. Richard C. Guise V’44 is a resident of the Masonic Homes in Elizabethtown, Pa. He writes that his son, Dr. Mark B. Guise V’82, was installed last autumn as president of the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association, and this is the first time a son has followed his father as president of this association. Dr. Richard was president in 1961-2, and then the Pennsylvania delegate to the American Veterinarian Medical Association for 16 years. He had also maintained a general practice in the Harrisburg area. Dr. Mark maintains a general practice at the Lockwillow Animal Clinic in Harrisburg, caring for both large and small animals.

Bob Evans W’45 writes “that the second NROTC Reunion was held at the Clarion Hotel in Carlisle, Pa., on June 1-3. (The first reunion was held in June 1998 and was [mostly] for the group that enrolled in September 1942 and graduated February 1945.) They wanted to have a repeat reunion, and since some from other Classes wished to be included, this reunion included NROTC graduating Classes from 1943, 1944, 1945 and 1946. (The first NROTC Class graduated in February 1943 and consisted of six members. There were three additional graduating Classes in 1943, in May, August and October. During the early years of World War II it was a requirement that a NROTC graduate also receive his university degree. Later this requirement was changed and the U.S. Navy did not insist on the candidate receiving his degree at the same time as his commission.) The other NROTC Classes involved in this reunion were: February and June 1944, February, June and October 1945, and February 1946. The total attendance including wives was 68, and the group asked the reunion committee to have another reunion in a few years. At Friday night’s banquet each man had a chance to tell about his life either at Penn, in the Navy or other experiences: there were lots of laughs and a few tears. On Saturday night Col. Frank Harris USMC (ret.) recited the poem, “Toast to the Flag,” and then led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. A memorial service was held commemorating the deaths of our departed classmates with Rev. Ted Nace officiating: a designated member of each Class lit a candle and as he recited the classmate’s name a symbolic ship’s bell was struck. In concluding this service the group sang the Navy Hymn. Our evening guest speaker was Col. John A. Clauer USMC, Penn’s director of naval science. His speech was very interesting and inspiring; he also gave the group an insight as to the current status of the NROTC program at Penn. Joe Etris and Irwin Waldman very capably handled the programs as our Masters of Ceremonies for Friday and Saturday nights respectively. Our evening activities concluded with the singing of ‘Anchors Aweigh’ and ‘The Marine’s Hymn,’ accompanied by Lovina Nace (Ted’s wife) on the piano with Hunter Davis playing his harmonica and leading the group in “Hail Pennsylvania!”

Dr. Matti Kibrick Gershenfeld CW’46 WG’51, a psychologist in Jenkintown, Pa., was installed last July as president of the International Council of Psychologists at its 58th annual conference at the University of Padua in Italy; she also presented an invited paper at the quadrennial convention of the International Association of Applied Psychology in Stockholm. In September she was the honoree at the Gift of Love Luncheon of Jewish Women’s International (formerly B’nai B’rith Women).

Dr. Anna Janney De Armond Gr’47, Hockessin, Del., professor emeritus of English at the University of Delaware, recently received from the Delaware Humanities Forum the Joseph P. del Tufo Award for Distinguished Service to the Humanities.

Arthur L. Iger W’49, a retired marketing communications executive, has been an adjunct professor of communication arts at the New York Institute of Technology for the past 18 years. His book, Music of the Golden Age, was published by Greenwood Press in 1998. And his name has been added to the 2000 edition of Who’s Who Among American Teachers.

Lou Sinopulos Ar’49 retired to Deerfield Beach, Fla., in 1994 after serving as a project architect for Harrington and Abramovitz in New York. He was knighted by Patriarch Athenagoras in 1967 in “Constantinople” for his service to the Orthodox Church.

1950s

J. Alden Butler W’51 retired from investment management with First Colony in 1994, and is now a part-time arbitrator for the National Association of Securities Dealers.

Amaranth Roslyn Ehrenhalt FA’51 will have some of her “very colorful abstractions,” oil on canvas, included in the exhibition Abstract Expressionism: Then and Now at the Hofstra University Museum in Hempstead, N.Y., during April and May.

Dr. Lionel Gold GD’51 is associate director of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and associate professor at Jefferson Medical College. In October he received the 2000 Presidential Achievement Award from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, as an educator and contributor to the specialty literature.

Janet Surman Klein Ed’51, president of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, was recognized as a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania in October for her 25 years work with small community groups and large state and national organizations in historic preservation. She also serves on the Philadelphia Historical Commission and the Museum Council of Delaware Valley.

Nick Lyons W’53 had his 19th and 20th books published last fall: Full Creel: A Nick Lyons Reader (Atlantic Monthly Press) and Hemingway on Fishing, a collection of the Nobel Prize-winner’s best writing about angling, edited with an introduction by Nick and published by The Lyons Press. Nick founded this press nearly 20 years ago and it is now run by his son, Tony.

Harris Ominsky W’53 L’56 is a partner in the law firm of Blank, Rome, Comisky & McCauley LLP, where he practices in the field of real-estate acquisitions, financing and leasing. In October he spoke on “Landlords, Tenants and Technology” at the American College of Real Estate Lawyers Conference.

Tom Silberman W’53 in October received the Rosalie Anixter Spirit of Life Award from the Anixter Center (a Chicago human-services agency for people with disabilities) for his advocacy for deaf and hard-of-hearing people.

Skip Litz C’54 <[email protected]>, now retired after a 40-year career in advertising and cable television, has published his first book, College-Boy Lieutenant, about “a 1950s era graduate who enters the service through ROTC and experiences a different kind of lifestyle as a defense counsel for special courts-martial. Dr. Claude W. Springer D’54 writes that “in six-and-a-half years of retirement, I have written 250 poems, of which 45 have been printed. I am in my 35th year of singing bass in the Great Neck (N.Y.) Choral Society. I enjoy cooking and baking. My wife, Marcia, and I play bridge, take courses, walk and travel. I exercise with a trainer twice a week, weight-lifting. We are having a great time and looking forward to our 50th wedding anniversary.”

James J. Heffernen W’56, Plymouth Meeting, Pa., and his wife, Fay, in September established the Bob Hays Sr. Golf Endowment at Penn, in the amount of $100,000; it is named after Bob Hays W’43.

Mark C. Jacobs C’56, a patent attorney in private practice in Sacramento, Calif., vacationed in Paris and Giverny, France, last summer. In September he celebrated his 65th birthday at a large party given by his sister, Jeanine Jacobs Goldberg Ed’60 of Los Angeles; among the attendees were Dr. Abram Kaplan C’56 M’60 and his wife, Rachel Gold Kaplan CW’62, of Ventnor, N.J.

Dr. Allan S. Shaw C’56 D’59 GD’61, chair of the Department of Dental Medicine and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia, was honored by the American Heart Association and the National Institute of Emergency Care last year for his outstanding efforts over the past 20 years to bring Basic Cardiac Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support into the office oral surgical setting.

Charlotte Shivvers CW’57 has retired from the active Unitarian Universalist ministry. She holds an M.Div. from Starr King School for the Ministry (Berkeley, 1983) and is minister emerita of the Sepulveda Unitarian Universalist Society in Los Angeles. She has served as interim minister in Omaha, Neb., and Kansas City, Mo., and now lives with her husband, Bob Baker, on the Iowa farm where she was born. Besides restoring and caring for that 1882 farm site, Charlotte and Bob visit children and grandchildren in Florida, Seattle, Japan and Southern California.

Dr. Leonard Abrams GD’59, clinical professor of periodontology at the University’s School of Dental Medicine, was granted honorary membership by the American Academy of Periodontology last September.

Shaun F. O’Malley W’59 was elected chair of the board of trustees of the Curtis Institute of Music in September. On the board since 1981, and its vice-chair since 1997, he serves with James R. Ledwith L’63, the secretary, and Scott M. Jenkins WG’84, treasurer.

1960s

Stephen A. Cozen C’61 L’64, founder and chair of the Philadelphia-area law firm of Cozen and O’Connor, was recently named one of the “Power 100” by Philadelphia magazine in its annual list of the Philadelphia area’s “mightiest movers and shakers.”

Eliot Kenin C’61 writes that he has “finally got a decent-paying job, after 36 years as a low-income full-time musician.” His dixieland jazz band, The Spirit of ’29—“music from the last depression for the next one,” played for all of the San Francisco Giants home games last year and hopes to do the same this year.

Dr. Howard Pitkow C’62 G’63, professor of physiology at Temple University School of Medicine, co-wrote the new book, Ethics in Academia. Earlier this year, he was named president-elect of the National Association of Academies of Science.

Sheldon S. Toll C’62, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., a partner in the Detroit law firm of Honigman, Miller, Schwartz & Cohn, was selected for the 2000-01 edition of Best Lawyers in America. Currently, he is co-counsel for the Commercial Creditors’ Committee representing $1 billion of debt in the Dow Corning bankruptcy re-organization.

Barry R. Yaffe SAMP’62 practices physical therapy in the Delaware Valley. A licensed U.S. Coast Guard captain, he also does professional fishing along the New Jersey coast out of Ventnor. Recently he was
certified as a captain for the International Game and Fishing Association—one
of only a 100 worldwide who have been certified.

Barry L Solar C’63 is now a realtor with the Back Bay office of Caldwell Banker Hunneman in Boston. He writes, “My first fine-arts course, (History of Art 140?) ignited my interests in architecture, especially contemporary and Bauhaus styles. As a real estate lawyer I was able to keep involved with this interest, but after 33 years at Burns & Levinson LLP, and having watched the firm grow from 7 to over 100 lawyers, and having served as the first chair of its real estate department, I decided to give a new slant to my interests by becoming a residential broker. I would love to hear from and help Penn alumni moving into, out of or around the Boston area. Our daughter, Rachel Solar-Tuttle C’92 L’95, is a writer.”

Lois Foster Hirt DH’64 <[email protected]> e-mails, “I just had my non-fiction short story, ‘If You Live Long Enough,’ published in Hot Chocolate For The Mystical Lover, edited by Arielle Ford (Plume Books). It’s the story of my mother who finally got together with the man she was going to marry almost 60 years ago. Yes, they married, and ironically both new stepsisters are also hygienists. Coincidentally, one stepsister is married to a Penn alumnus who was an undergraduate when I was there and remembers me. I started a ‘fun’ column called ‘Hygienist In Print: Fiction & Non-Fiction’ about five years ago for the Los Angeles Dental Hygienists’ Society. It has blossomed into my writing for Access, the American Dental Hygienists’ Association’s magazine, The Jewish Press, the travel site Distinctive Travels, and Los Angeles Sisters-In-Crime’s Desserticide II, which includes my sponge cake recipe listed as Foul Play Sponge Cake. Joe and I have three children and four grandkids. Any dentists or hygienists, or [anyone interested in] dental aspects in any media, or in the other coincidences, contact me.”

Trudy Dittmar CW’66, a freelance writer in Dubois, Wyo., received a 2000 Rona Jaffe Foundation Writer’s Award in September. She is working on a collection of essays on nature and the environment, to be published by the University of Iowa Press.

Dr. Margaret H. Hager CW’66 e-mails she “went to Temple Med and did my family-practice residency at Chestnut Hill Hospital. I have been with the Clinical Care Associates of the University of Penn Healthcare System since 1994. My practice is located in the Roxborough district of Philadelphia. I have two grown children. The news is that in August I was listed in Town and Country magazine as one of the top family docs in the U.S.; 578 doctors (internist and F.P.s alike) were chosen. My most enjoyable avocation is writing poetry.”

Dr. Judith Rodin CW’66, president of the University, was recognized as a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania in
October for being the first permanently appointed woman president of an Ivy League university, and for her community service, including her work on the executive committee of the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and on the board of Greater Philadelphia First.

Thomas R. Bond CGS’67, Philadelphia, director of the workers’ compensation group in the regional defense-litigation law firm of Marshall, Dennehey, Warner, Coleman & Goggin, was selected to be included in the forthcoming edition of The Best Lawyers in America, and to serve on the board of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business & Industry.

Walter G. Reinhard C’67, Fanwood, N.J., an attorney with Norris, McLaughlin & Marcus, P.A., in Somerville, N.J., who specializes in public-utility law, was selected for inclusion in the 2001-2002 edition of The Best Lawyers in America. He lives in Fanwood.

Marilyn Ware CW’67, Strasburg, Pa., chair of the American Water Works Co., the large, national investor-owned management firm, was recognized as a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania in October for her long years of philanthropic service. Currently she is chair of the executive committee of the board of the Eisenhower Exchange Fellowship, a trustee of both the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center and the University of Pennsylvania Health System, and a board member of the National Council of the Conservation Fund.

Dr. Robert E. Wenger C’67 GM’75 was associate director of Penn’s Counseling and Psychological Services (1995-98) and former associate director of psychiatric services in the old Student Health Service (1990-95). While serving in these positions, he was also elected to the national organization, Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry, serving on its college-health committee. He co-authored its publication Making the Grade: Helping Students Adapt to Graduate School (The Haworth Press, 1999) which also appeared as a special edition that year of the Journal of College Student Psychotherapy.

Dr. Eric R. White GEd’67 GrEd’75 <[email protected]> wrote the chapter, “Developing Mission, Goals, and Objectives for the Advising Program,” in Academic Advising: A Comprehensive Handbook, published by Jossey-Bass in August.

Michael Crow C’68 WG’70 e-mails that in a mid-life change of career, he recently completed his doctorate in experimental psychology and will begin teaching this spring at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

Dr. William McGucken Gr’68, professor and chair of history at the University of Southern Indiana, wrote Lake Erie Rehabilitated: Controlling Cultural Eutrophication, 1960s-1990s, published last March by the University of Akron Press.

Paul H. Ross W’68 <[email protected]> is now a high-yield corporate-bond manager at ING Furman Selz Asset Management in New York. “Despite the current market volatility, the buy-side is preferred to the sell-side, much more satisfying.” Paul spent more than 20 years at Salomon Brothers, from 1975 to 1995.

Lenore J. Sayers CW’68, a certified purchasing manager and senior buyer at PictureTel in Andover, Mass., was elected to the board of the Purchasing Management Association of Boston for this fiscal year.

Robert Selsam C’68 is senior vice president and manager of the New York office of Boston Properties, Inc., a national office real estate investment trust headed by Mortimer B. Zuckerman WG’61. In November he was cited Developer of the Year by the Associated Builders and Owners of Greater New York, primarily for his company’s part in the redevelopment of Times Square.

Frederick M. Herrmann C’69, executive director of the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission, edited a series of articles on campaign financing for Public Integrity, a quarterly journal of government ethics; they appear in the fall and winter editions. The fourth edition of his Campaign Financing and Lobbying Bibliography was published by the Council on Governmental Ethics Laws late last year.

Dr. Betsy Hoffman G’69 Gr’72 is the newly appointed president of the University of Colorado; she had served as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Hon. Richard B. Teitelman C’69, a judge of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District, in September was elected president of the Missouri Bar for 2000-01.

1970s

James B. Craver L’70, has joined the Boston law firm of Burns & Levinson LLP as a partner in its corporate group. He lives in Dover with his wife, Ellie, and their two daughters.

Terri N. Gelberg CW’70, president of Gelberg & Associates, which provides legal services to investors and emerging entrepreneurial companies, spoke at the ABA’s annual meeting in London last September on “David vs. Goliath: Solo and Small Firm Practitioners Among Global Law Firms.”

Sam Gugino C’70 announces the publication of his fourth book, Low-Fat Cooking to Beat the Clock, last January by Chronicle Books. This is the sequel to Cooking to Beat the Clock: Inspired, Delicious Meals in 15 Minutes, which was named one of the 10 best cookbooks of 1999 by Amazon.com. His syndicated bi-weekly newspaper column based on these books can be seen in publications such as the San Jose Mercury News and Palm Beach Post. He is also celebrating the one-year anniversary of SamCooks, his bi-monthly newsletter, available free through his Web site (www.samcooks.com).

Dr. Helen Frame Peters CW’70 G’74 GrW’79 was appointed dean of the Carroll School of Management at Boston College. She had served as managing director of the global-bond group of Scudder Kemper Investments.

Andrew M. Fischer C’71 completed the 100-mile New York City Bike Tour sponsored by Transportation Alternatives, together with fellow cyclists Alan Lewis C’82 and Roger Machlis W’82. Ted Munice W’71 <[email protected]> has joined the New York office of Milliman & Robertson as a consulting actuary. “I still live in Marlboro, N.J., with my wife, Rhonda, and almost-grown kids, Justin and Laura. I maintain contact with Penn by being an alumni interviewer: I get to meet some fantastic kids that are dying to go to Penn.”

Hon. Mark Rindner C’71 <[email protected]> was appointed in October to the Alaska Superior Court in Anchorage, where he has lived for the last 21 years. He is a recipient of the Alaska Bar Association’s distinguished-service award for 2000 and its 1997 Pro Bono Award.

William A. Squires C’71 was named a Paul Harris Fellow by District 7890 of Rotary International for service to the community. This is the second time he has been so honored; the first was by the Enfield (Conn.) Rotary Club.

David S. Brody W’72 recently received the North Carolina Hospital Association 2000 Trustee Service Award: in February he completed his 16th year on the boards of Pitt County Memorial Hospital and the University Health System of Eastern Carolina, including the last two as chair. He is a managing partner of Brody Associates, a real estate development company, and serves on the board of the Brody Foundation. David and his wife, Laura, have three children, Reuben, Matthew and Jennifer.

Dr. Kay Cothran Craigie Gr’72 <[email protected]> designed a long-term education project for the American Radio Relay League, Inc., the national association for amateur radio, of which she is a vice-president. This program aims to increase the use of amateur radio as a teaching strategy in American classrooms.

Dr. Michael G. Goldstein C’73 is an associate director of the Bayer Institute of Health Care Communication in West Haven, Conn., and an adjunct professor of psychiatry and human behavior at Brown University Medical School. Beginning this April, he will serve as president of the Society of Behavioral Medicine, a multidisciplinary society dedicated to understanding the interrelationships between behavior, health and illness. He lives in Barrington, R.I., with his wife, Rebecca, son, Noah (18), a freshman at Lafayette, and daughter, Annie (15), a high-school sophomore.

Shirley Hunter CW’74 received a KPMG Minority Accounting Doctoral Scholarship in order to pursue her doctorate at Texas A&M University.

Ronald H. Levine W’74 recently received the Department of Justice Director’s Award for Superior Performance in a Managerial Role. Chief of the 80-lawyer Criminal Division of the United States Attorney’s Office in Philadelphia, Ron was cited for his role in implementing an office intranet, developing continuing legal-education programs and supervising substantial prosecutions in the areas of public corruption, health-care and commercial fraud, and narcotics and firearms trafficking.

Richard A. Matasar C’74 L’77 was appointed president and dean of the New York Law School in July. A scholar of civil procedure and federal jurisdiction, he had served as dean of the Frederic G. Levin College of Law at the University of Florida.

Patrick G. Dills W’75, executive vice president for sales with First Health Group Corp., was elected vice-chair of the disability management/benefits integration program of the advisory board of the Workers Compensation Research Institute.

Joel Millman C’76 has opened the new, U.S.-Mexico border bureau for The Wall Street Journal in San Diego, Calif., from where he reports on trade and immigration issues. He and his wife, Dagmar Obereigner, are pleased to announce the birth of
his daughter, Anna Karina Millman, in Encinitas, on June 13.

Dr. Gary J. Stilwell W’77 WG’84 <[email protected]> graduated from Temple University School of Medicine in May and started his internship in Seattle.

Karen Drayne C’78 <[email protected]> and Rob Lloyd C’79 <[email protected]> have renewed their friendship after a 22-year hiatus. They lost track of each other after Penn, but Rob was able to locate Karen again recently through the wizardry of the Internet. He used Web search-engine extraordinaire Dogpile (www.dogpile.com) to fetch Karen’s award-winning Web site, Is it a Book? and her poetry published in The Boston Review. She works for Staples & Charles, a museum exhibit-design firm in Alexandria, Va., and Rob works for the U.S. Department of State doing government contracts. As it turns out, Rob and his wife, Linda, happen to live in Alexandria, not far from Karen’s office and her home in Chevy Chase, Md. Karen’s son, John, is a freshman at McGill University and her son, Charlie, is now in high school. Karen’s poems have appeared in many publications, including The New Republic (e.g., March 30, 1998), and she also received the Academy of American Poets Prize. Some of her works may be found through Rob’s Web site (www.creamband.com), which also features many of his publications on government contracting. Karen and Rob have already teamed up on one paper and plan to collaborate on writing projects for many years to come.

Barry Rabin W’78 <[email protected]> writes a weekly humor column that was recently syndicated by iSyndicate, an Internet syndication company. His columns, which have appeared in The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune and The Philadelphia Inquirer, can be seen at (www.barryrabin.com). Besides his writing, Barry practices law in Thorndale, Chester County, Pa. He is married to Bridget M. Doyle ASC’94, and they announce the birth of a baby daughter, Megan Annette Rabin, on Feb. 1 last year.

Shepard Siegel C’78 lives in Hong Kong with his wife, Risa Starr W’85, and their three sons, Skyler (seven), Sander (five) and Mason (two). Shep works on distressed-debt trading at Goldman Sachs.

Jeffrey Sterling W’78 <[email protected]> is “happily living in the Seattle area with my wife and five boys (soon to be six). Working on my second Internet start-up having successfully sold the first a couple years ago. Life is good.”

Michael J. Ossip L’79, a partner in the Philadelphia office of the law firm of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, was appointed co-chair of the federal labor-standards legislation committee of the ABA in October; he is also co-editor of a forthcoming ABA publication on the Family Medical Leave Act. He has served on the faculty of the School of EEO Studies at Cornell University since 1987.

Mark D. Seltzer C’79 has joined the Boston office of Holland & Knight LLP, serving in the firm’s financial-institutions and white-collar-crime defense practices; previously he was with Goulston & Storrs. He serves on the editorial board of the Business Crimes Bulletin and the White Collar Crime Reporter. Mark and his wife, June, live in Needham with their two children.

Daniel Dorff G’80 wrote the score to Blast Off!, “launched” on the 100th NASA Space Shuttle mission of Oct. 5. The work, for narrator and orchestra, imagines a trip through space from a child’s eyes, “ideal for space-themed family and children’s concerts.”

Lt.Col. Oleh W. Hnatiuk C’81 was appointed chief of pulmonary and critical-care medical service at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington in Sept. 1999. That year he was also promoted to associate professor of medicine at the F. Herbert School of Medicine in Bethesda, Md., and he received his second Meritorious Service Medal for duties performed while officer-in-charge of the biological special-medical-augmentation response team of the North Atlantic Region Medical Command.

Nancy Newberger Ludin C’81 is the newly appointed campaign director for the Jewish Federation of Greater Orlando. She lives in Maitland, Fla., with her husband, Craig, a CPA in private practice, and their three sons ages 13, 11 and 6.

Dr. Michael Alec Rose C’81 G’82, Nashville, Tenn., wrote Symphony No. 1 (Paths of Peace), a tribute to Albert Schweitzer, which was performed by the Nashville Symphony in October. He was invited to compose it as part of the year-long celebration, on the 125th anniversary of Schweitzer’s birth, of his contribution to Western thought.

Eugenio Sevilla-Sacasa WG’81 has been promoted to vice president, Mexico operations, with Ryder Systems, Inc., a logistics and transportation management firm. He lives in Coral Gables, Fla., with his wife, Frances, and their three children.

Dr. Mark B. Guise V’82 was installed last autumn as president of the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association. He is son of Dr. Richard C. Guise V’44. This is the first time that a son has followed his father as president of this association. Dr. Richard was president in 1961-2, and then the Pennsylvania delegate to the American Veterinarian Medical Association for 16 years. He had also maintained a general practice in the Harrisburg area. Dr. Mark maintains a general practice at the Lockwillow Animal Clinic in Harrisburg, caring for both large and small animals.

In March 1999 I moved from El Paso, Tex., where I was an operations research analyst at JTF-6, to Washington, to continue working as an analyst on weapons of mass destruction. While in D.C., I started working on a five-year advanced-concept technology demonstration that focuses on how to recover better after a chemical or biological attack. Lillian Rozin C’84, a singer-actress, performed Silly People: A Tribute to Stephen Sondheim on his Seventieth in Philadelphia in December. She returned to Philadelphia after a five-year stint in Boston, where she was part of the cabaret show, The Will & Lil Show; this spring, her one-woman musical Depression! The Musical! will have its Boston-area premiere.

John S. Summers L’84, a founding shareholder of the Philadelphia law firm of Hangley, Aronchick, Segal & Pudlin, has been elected to the board of The Reinvestment Fund, “a community-development financial institution dedicated to building wealth and opportunity for low-wealth communities and low- and moderate-income individuals.” His practice includes complex commercial and professional malpractice and misconduct matters, and construction, employment and health-care law.

Dr. Sean Bidic C/W’92 <[email protected]> is in his second year of a three-year Masters of Fine Arts program at Carnegie Mellon University. Prior exhibition/performance sites over the last year include the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh and the Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art. One recent sound and video installation, in the absence of voyeurism, was part of the 2000 Pittsburgh Biennial, from September to early November. Other venues included the “Intersecting Art/Technology and the Body” symposium at Penn State in late October; and this coming February, at Exchange in Amsterdam. During his three-year school/research hiatus from residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Sean has continued his investigations with Carnegie Mellon University’s Bone Tissue Engineering Center, where he is co-author of two Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative funded-research projects. His most recent study, “Healing Rabbit Calvarial Defects using Caprotite Bone Scaffolds,” was presented at an international tissue-engineering meeting in Innsbruck, Austria. Son EAS’97 <[email protected]> was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Navy after graduation, attended the Navy Surface Warfare Officer School in Newport, R.I., and then, stationed on the frigate, USS Vandegrift, was forward-deployed in Yokosuka, Japan. “I served as the anti-submarine warfare officer. We made a number of port visits to a number of countries and territories (and states) including South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, Guam, Hawaii, Saipan and even Shanghai, where the ship’s company had an opportunity to fly to Beijing and even climb the Great Wall). After my 19-month tour I finally returned to the States in January [1999] only to return to school: this time a Navy school, the Navy Nuclear Power School in Charleston, S.C. Right now I’m in the second half of this school but this time in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., where I currently work at a nuclear reactor, until March. After that I’ll be stationed on a aircraft carrier probably in Norfolk, Va. I’d love to hear from old friends who I’ve lost touch with. I hope this isn’t too long for someone who just graduated but sailors move around a lot.”

Alli Feldman C’98 started a new job in October as an assistant media planner with the advertising agency, Ogilvy & Mather, where she works in the media management group on the IBM account. The first game, Little Nicky, is based on the Adam Sandler feature released in November. The second game, Batman: Chaos in Gotham, is based on The New Batman Adventures cartoon.
