1920s

Dr. Joshua Simon Somers C’27 D’28, who lived and practiced dentistry in the Logan section of Philadelphia from 1928 to 1992, celebrated his 92nd birthday with more than 100 well-wishers in Plymouth Meeting, Pa., in May. Josh (or “Slick” as he was known to his classmates) shadow boxes, does 50 push-ups, and walks three miles of the Wissahickon trails daily. His two sons are Penn grads, Dr. Laurence A. Somers C’52 M’56 and Dr. Robert G. Somers C’54, as are four of his grandchildren and three of their spouses, Dr. Jonathan Somers C’82 M’86 and Dorothy Mayson GEd’81 W’85, Dr. Debra Lynn Somers Copit C’85, Dr. Marjorie Somers M’90 and Dr. Frank Silvestry M’90 GM’93, and Dr. Liza R. Somers M’93 and Dr. Daniel Mines M’85 GM’99 GM’99. Josh invites all alumni to his 100th birthday—“if they are still alive.” And he calls attention to the days when Class cheers were more colorful, his being “(belch) … pardon me, something I ate, Pennsylvania twenty-eight.”

1930s

Bob Bolton W’30, senior chair of Bank One in Alexandria, La., received the first ever lifetime-achievement award of the Louisiana Bankers Association in April. An Alexandria native, he returned there in 1932 to work at the Rapides Bank, now part of Bank One.

Dr. Eleanor Anglin Price Ed’31 G’34 received a lifetime-achievement award from the National Association of Social Workers in June. She retired as professor of social work and guidance counselor at Northern Illinois University College of Education in 1974, and has volunteered with the H. Douglas Singer Mental Health Center, where she worked with sexually abused children. Recently she completed training to become a court-appointed special advocate and already has a caseload. “I found myself when I started to work with families,” she said. “After I retired, I figured I needed to find kids to work for. That is what helps me keep going.”

Theodore K. Warner Jr. C’31 L’34 was presented with a medallion, as a new, 50-years member, by the American Law Institute in May.

Dr. Richard S. Lane D’35, Indian Wells, Calif.,writes: “By the time you read this I will have celebrated my 92nd birthday. My family and friends gave me a big party. Also, I will be finishing my 18th year as a student at the local College of the Desert; it is a two-year college that requires 60 units to graduate: I already have 95. I refuse to graduate because when you do you can’t continue to take classes, and I hope to continue at COD.”

Bernard Frank L’38 in March received the Wallenberg Tribute Award from the Institute for Jewish-Christian Understanding at Muhlenberg College, and in July he was made a fellow of the ABA’s administrative-law and regulatory-practice section.

1940s

Dr. Leonard Apt C’42, professor of ophthalmology at UCLA and emeritus head of pediatric ophthalmology at its Jules Stein Eye Institute, was honored by the American Academy of Pediatrics establishing an annual lecture in his name to reflect his pioneering career: he was the first physician in this country to be board-certified in both pediatrics and ophthalmology and helped create the medical sub-specialty of pediatric ophthalmology.

Dr. Kenneth D. Cohen C’49 GM’81 “returned [in June] after 11 days in Moscow and St. Petersburg. I was teaching and supervising (through translators) in three separate psychoanalytic institutes. We stayed in flats (apartments) with the local people. The program was under the auspices of the American Psychoanalytic Association. But all was not work; evenings were spent at the Bolshoi, the Mosiev Folk Dancers and the opera, as well as a concert led by Maestro Riccardo Muti with the La Scala Orchestra. This was our second such trip and it was a most interesting and rewarding experience.”

1950s

Dr. Robert B. Daroff C’57 M’61, chief of staff and senior vice president for academic affairs at the University Hospitals of Cleveland and professor of neurology and associate dean at Case Western Resrve University, is president-elect of the American Headache Society, assuming the position in 2002.

Dr. John A. Buesseler GM’51 was recognized in May as founding dean and emeritus vice president for health affairs and health sciences at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. He was founding dean of the medical school and CEO of its medical center from 1970 till August 1998.

Sen. Arlen Specter C’51 was recognized by the Eastern Pennsylvania chapter of the Arthritis Foundation as its community leader of the year, for his nearly four decades of service to the people of Philadelphia and Pennsylvania. He was also credited for achieving increased funding for the National Institute of Health: “… funding for arthritis research and programs will see an increase of $49 million” next fiscal year.

Laurence I. Guthmann W’52 <[email protected]> is chair of Supreme Finance Corp., a commercial-finance company in Chicago. He lives with his wife in Highland Park, and they have nine grandchildren. They winter at Frenchman’s Creek in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Harris Comisky W’53 L’56, a partner in the real-estate department of the Philadelphia law firm of Blank, Rome, Comisky & McCauley LLP, spoke at the April meeting of the Tri-State Commercial and Industrial Association of Realtors on “Recent Changes to the Real Estate Licensing and Registration Act.”

Charles F. Ludwig C’53 L’56 was recently elected vice-chair of the Schuylkill River Development Council, which is building a new park running 1 1/2 miles along the east bank, from the Fairmount Dam at the Art Museum south to Lombard Street. The council has been designated the planner and coordinator of development of the entire tidal Schuykill, from the dam to the Delaware River, including environmental, recreational, commercial and residential development.

Phyllis Rubin Polk CW’54, public-relations coordinator of Philadelphia’s Office of City Representative, was elected chair of the Philadelphia Public Relations Association in June.

Douglas Ann Boutin Bohman OT’55 recently “completed her second term as chair of the Board of Selectmen for the town of Chatham, Mass., which is at the elbow of Cape Cod. She was the first woman ever elected to this post, the highest elected official in the town, since it was incorporated in 1712,” writes her husband, Ray Bohman W’55.

Dr. W. Benson Harer Jr. M’56 GM’60, San Bernardino, Calif., chief of staff at Riverside County Regional Medical Center, was installed as president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in May. He is the founding past-president of the California Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and a past president of the American Society of Forensic Obstetricians-Gynecologists.

Hugh Jascourt C’56 was one of four officials honored at the Penn Relays as a master official. Currently he is a mediator and arbitrator and serves as president of the Agency for Dispute Resolution and Synergistic Relations.

Dr. Michael Eigen C’57 has written a new book, Damaged Bonds, soon to be published by Karnac Books. His Toxic Nourishment was published by Karnac. He was a keynote speaker for the Institute for Expressive Analysis last autumn, for the European Association of Psychotherapy and the Irish Council of Psychotherapy in June, and the Westchester (N.Y.) Institute for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis in September.

J. Michael Everett Ar’58 GAr’59 has stepped down as dean of architecture and design and professor of architecture and landscape architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design. Joining RISD in 1969, he has served as head of landscape architecture, faculty chair, and, for the last five years, dean. After an accrued year’s leave, he will retire to focus on stencil prints, sculpture and garden design, and to set up a new organization for community policy, operations and design.

Peter M. Fass W’58 has joined the New York law firm of Proskauer Rose LLP as a corporate partner. He specializes in tax-advantaged financing for the real-estate industry, and is the author of the eight-volume work, Tax Advantaged Securities, LLPs, Pass Throughs and Other Vehicles.

Stanley Warchaizer EE’58 retired from Lockheed Martin in 1998 as vice president of classified programs for management and data systems. Since then he has audited courses at Penn and volunteered at the University Museum and at the Engineering School.

1960s

Charles A. Heimbold Jr. L’60, chair and CEO of Bristol-Myers Squibb, in June received the Nelson Mandela Award for establishing the Secure the Future program, which provides care and support for women and children in Southern Africa infected with HIV/AIDS.

William Boyd Katz W’60 had his second book, on federal tax law, philosophy and socio-economics, placed on the library shelves of the Inn at Penn Hotel and the relocated Faculty Club.

Warren E. Peterson W’62 <[email protected]> has retired from The Boeing Company in Seattle, where he was a business-operations manager in the space and communications group.

Ya’akov (Jerrold) Aronson Ed’61 <[email protected]>, university librarian of Bar Ilan University in Ramat Gan, Israel, received a British Council scholarship to attend a week-long seminar at Loughborough University in February on “The electronic library: strategic, policy and management issues.” He was also awarded a grant by the Littauer Foundation to attend the June convention in Washington of the Association of Jewish Libraries, where he delivered a paper on the Rambam Library in Tel Aviv, its history and functions. Four of his five daughters are married and he has, to date, 13 grandchildren.

Stephen A. Cozen C’61 L’64, founder and chair of the Philadelphia-area law firm of Cozen and O’Connor, was named one of the country’s 100 most influential lawyers by the National Law Journal in July “for his innovative approaches to litigation in major complex cases and for leading his firm to the top ranks of the country’s law practices.”

Dr. Thomas C. Lowe GEE’62 GrE’66 <[email protected]> in March visited his missionary family, his late-wife Marilyn’s daughter, her husband and their six youngest children, in Trinidad. In April he and Kathleen T. Dowd announced their engagement to be married in October.

Dan Rottenberg C’64 was appointed editor of Family Business, the national quarterly for and about family-owned companies, effective with this autumn’s issue (www.familybusinessmagazine.com).

Judith Lipton Yellin CW’64 <[email protected]>, founder and owner of Managing Partner Organizing Services (www.managing-partner.com), was re-elected for a second term to the board of New England Professional Organizers. Judie lives in Newton, Mass.

Beverly Rutman Budin CW’65, a partner in the estates department of the Philadelphia law firm of Ballard, Spahr, Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP, made a presentation on “Gift Tax Finality” to a taxation-section meeting of the New Jersey State Bar Association in May.

Kevin B. Cronin C’65 was recently appointed administrator of the natural-gas division of the Wisconsin Public Service Commission in Madison. Previously, he served the commission as chief counsel of the electric division and assistant general counsel. In addition, he was listed in both Who’s Who in America (55th ed.), and Who’s Who in American Law (11th ed.), for the second time. He lives with his wife, Patti, and son, Kevin (15), in Middleton.

Dr. Nohad A. Toulan Gr’65, dean of the College of Urban and Public Affairs at Portland State University in Oregon, was recognized as a fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners in April.

Marty Weinstein W’65 <[email protected]> lives in Berkeley, Calif., with his wife, Carol, and is executive director of Bay Area Community Resources, which just received a national competitive Americorps grant. Marty has “discovered the joy of being a grandfather along with a passion for ceramics. Tennis and golf are also a constant.”

Dr. Dorothy Brooten Nu’66 GNu’70 Gr’80, dean and professor of nursing at Case Western Reserve University, in May received the Honor A Researcher Award from the childbearing section of the Midwestern Nursing Research Society for her contributions to nursing research on women’s health.

Maurice Heckscher C’67 is “still running my own recruiting business and still playing squash, believe it or not. My oldest boy is married and running a mutual fund in Bermuda, while my other four are still fancy-free: one teaching in New Orleans, two at Cornell (sorry) and the last (hurrah) a junior in high school. Thomas R. Bond CGS’67, Philadelphia, director of the workers’ compensation group in the regional defense-litigation law firm of Marshall, Dennehey, Warner, Coleman & Goggin, in May was re-appointed to the board of PCI Insurance, Inc., the insurance arm of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Commerce.

Jeffrey B. Albert C’68, a shareholder of the Philadelphia law firm of McKissock & Hoffman, P.C., concentrates his practice on the representation of attorneys and other matters involving the legal profession. Two of his articles appeared in the April issues of the Independence chapter newsletter of the Association of Legal Administrators and the Pennsylvania Bar Quarterly. He spoke at the “Dispute Resolution Institute Personal Injury Potpourri” seminar in Philadelphia in June.

Don Morrison C’68 and Ann Pepek Morrison G’68 have moved to London to co-edit the Europe edition of Time, “the first Time co-editors since Henry Luce and Britton Hadden founded the magazine 77 years ago.”

Mark G. Yudof L’68, president of the University of Minnesota, recently returned from a trip to China and Taiwan, where he visited universities with which Minnesota has academic-exchange programs and made contact with Minnesota’s alumni there. He also received honorary professorships from Peking University, Fudan University in Hong Kong, Xi’an Jiaotong University in Shanghai, and the Fourth Military Medical University.

Mark Lieberman W’69 <[email protected]> has been elected a director of the Citizens Union, “the oldest, largest and most influential good-government organization in New York.” He was also recently elected treasurer of the Brooklyn Public Library, of which he has been a trustee since 1998. He continues in his “day job” as senior vice president, credit, and risk-management coordinator of The Dime Savings Bank of New York.

Donald J. Stastny GAr’69 GCP’69 GFA’69, the principal planner at Stastny Brun Architects of Portland, Ore., was recognized as a fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners in April.

1970s

Timothy J. Carson W’70, Philadelphia, a partner in the regional law firm of Saul Ewing, was elected chair of the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission and chair of its executive committee, till June next year. (The Delaware Valley is the fifth largest metropolitan region in the country.) He is currently vice president of the Pennsylvania Bar Association.

John S. Hoffman C’70 <[email protected]> e-mails that after graduate school at MIT he was a consultant in Chicago, then headed stratospheric ozone at the EPA, where he went on to start its Energy Star and Green Lights programs. Three years ago he founded WorkSmart Energy, and has since “incubated three new companies, marketing with breakthrough energy technologies WorkSmart developed and patented.” Married to a “wonderful wife, [with] one beautiful and bright and happy daughter, [he is] having a fine time and hope others are too.”

Dayton Duncan C’71 was recently awarded an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Drake University for his work in bringing American history to the public through his six books and documentary films with Ken Burns for PBS. It is his second honorary degree: in 1999 he was awarded a doctorate in humane letters from Franklin Pierce College. Duncan lives in Walpole, N.H., and is currently working with Burns on a film biography of Mark Twain, scheduled to air on PBS in the fall of next year.

Bob Hallock W’71 and Fritzi Kolker Hallock C/W’83 are pleased to announce the birth of Charles Stuart Hallock on March 10. Charlie joins big brother Stephen and big sister Amanda in Baltimore, where Bob is the general manager of Lion Headwear (a cap and hat manufacturer) and Fritzi is president of MarketSmart (a real estate consulting firm).

Dr. Jason Mann C’71 and Dr. Belle Sheppard Mann CW’71 have moved to Portland, Ore.: he has accepted a position as an oncologist-hematologist at Kaiser NW Permanente, and she will teach yoga. They can be reached at <[email protected]> and <[email protected]>.

Dr Eileen Landy G’72 Gr’78, professor of sociology at the SUNY College at Old Westbury, was honored with this year’s State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Robin Lichten Palley CW’72 is now senior vice president of WebMD Health, an Internet site that helps families manage their health care. She and her husband, Gilbert, are delighted that their son, Josh, matriculates at Penn this month, while their daughter, Alexis, enters her second year in medical school at MCP Hahnemann.

Elaine Smith CW’72, a teacher at Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, received the 1999 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the nation’s highest award for mathematics teachers.

David S. Romanik W’73 <[email protected]> was appointed president and CEO of Gulfstream Park Racing Association, Inc., a thoroughbred racetrack in Hallandale that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Magna Entertainment Corp.; previously he had served as its general counsel.

Dr. Jeff Schoenwald Gr’73 <[email protected]> shifted careers in June. “After two-and-a-half-years with Schafer Corporation, a technical consulting and services company with strength in large optical systems (like space-based telescopes) and directed-energy systems (laser weapons), I took a position with Solus Micro Technologies, Inc., as director of systems engineering. It develops telecommunications components, optical cross-bar switches and wavelength tunable filters, based on the combination of silicon micro-electro-mechanical systems and elastomeric material systems. We have recently demonstrated that a Fabry-Perot tunable etalon, which selects optical wavelength with very high resolution, can be tuned over the entire ITU spectrum with a single device. I find myself in the very fast moving world of telecom start-ups, venture capital, strategic partners and mergers. It is very exciting. While at Schafer, I was collaborating with the Claremont Graduate School to prepare a proposal to the U.S. Department of Energy to monitor the national electrical-power-grid system for instabilities using chaos theory. I hope CGU wins, but I doubt if I will be able to participate, as my new job is more than compensating for the relative life of leisure that I previously led.”

Jane McCallister CW’74 WG’76, a partner in the New York office of Heidrick & Struggles International, Inc., the international executive-search firm, relocated to its Philadelphia office in May; she is a member of the firm’s global health-care practice. Previously she was vice president and director of global marketing for Citibank. Jane lives in Princeton, N.J., with her husband and two chidren.

John F. Sopko C’74 <[email protected]> was recently promoted to deputy administrator and deputy assistant secretary for the National Telecommunications and Information Administration in the U.S. Department of Commerce; “it is the primary advisor to the President and administration on telecommunications and information policy. In that position I am the most senior career employee in NTIA.”

Daniel F. Clancy C’75 GAr’78 has been “happily married to Adele for the past 17 years with one son, Sean Kirkpatrick Clancy (14). As a licensed architect and certified value specialist for Olympic Associates in Seattle <[email protected]>, I lead design charrettes and value-engineering studies, 20 in the last two years for the Alaska district of the U.S. Corps of Engineers. I’m the past president of the local chapter of the Society of American Value Engineers. Career highlights include designing a new fraternity house at WSU in Pullman for high-school chum and Microsoft co-founder, Paul Allen, as well as a new birthing suite where my son was born. I recently had lunch with Lawrence Houston C’74, who practices architecture here in Seattle and is married with four young children.”

Dr. Louis E. Rossman D’75 GD’77, a full-time endodontist in Philadelphia, was elected to the board of the American Association of Endodontists.

Philip M. Small C’75 has joined the law firm of Brown, Rudnick, Freed & Gesmer in its Hartford, Conn., office.

Dr. Robert Baron G’76 Gr’94, director of the folk-arts program of the New York State Council on the Arts, was appointed by the National Endowment for the Humanities to a year-long position as its folklore consultant.

Dr. Toby Gordon OT’76 is vice president for planning and marketing for the Johns Hopkins Hospital, the Johns Hopkins health system and Johns Hopkins Medicine. An associate professor in the School of Hygiene and Public Health there, she was senior editor of Evidence-Based Surgery, newly released by B.C. Decker Publishers, Inc.

Ira D. Riklis W’76 WG’77 and Diana Rausnitz Riklis C’76 GEd’77 are “very proud to announce that our daughter, Jordana Leah Riklis, graduated from the School of Arts and Sciences in the Class of 2000, summa cum laude, and led the procession of degree candidates down Locust Walk bearing a Penn banner as undergraduate Class secretary.” Ira is “the principal of Sutherland Capital Management, Inc., a private holding company primarily involved in the home-security market. A portfolio company, C.O.P.S. Monitoring, is the second largest wholesale monitoring company in the country. Combined with sister company, SafeGuard Security (an alarm installation, service and monitoring company), the recurring monthly revenue would rank in the top 50 companies (out of 15,000 companies) in the U.S. Additionally, stakes are held in other companies involved in home and commercial alarm accounts. Other investments include an Internet-service provider, a hedge-fund consolidation company, a ladies-clothing designer and marketer, a ski-equipment rental chain, and various real estate partnerships with an emphasis on strip-shopping centers. Diana teaches students in need of remedial training at the Park East Day School, where she had previously created an arts and sciences enrichment program. She is a member of the board of the Ramaz School, a private, pre-school through 12th grade school. [A member of] the executive committee of the Board of Jewish Education of Greater New York, where she previously chaired the early-childhood liaison committee, she is also an active member of the education and community-services affiliations-review committee of the UJA-Federation of New York and the United Jewish Appeal’s committee for early-childhood education, and most recently, the Rose Biller endowment-fund committee. She also sits on New York’s Mt. Sinai Hospital Children’s Foundation board. Our younger daughter, Talia Jill Riklis C’02, is pursuing a degree in economics at Penn.”

Dr. Morton Owen Schapiro G’76 Gr’79 was inaugurated president of Williams College in Massachusetts last July, having taught and served in administration there. Until this summer he was dean of the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, vice president for planning and professor of economics at the University of Southern California. He is an expert on the economics of higher education.

Dr. Ronald C. Brodsky C’77 was the top fundraiser for the Hampton Roads chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society 2000 MS-150 Bike-a-thon. Raising close to $10,000 from individual sponsors, he rode in his 12th consecutive MS-150 bike tour this year—and is already planning next year’s ride. Ron also completed his fourth Operation Smile Mission, this time journeying to Bolivia; he has traveled with Operation Smile to Venezuela, Colombia and the Philippines over the past three years. Professionally he is chief of anesthesia at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, Va., where he has practiced for the past 15 years.

Dr. Paul J. Carling G’77, after a 25-year career in mental-health research and policy, has resigned as professor of psychology, director of the national graduate program in community mental health and executive director of the Center for Community Change International at Trinity College of Vermont, in order to pursue full-time study at the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass., for priesthood in the Episcopal Church. He continues limited consulting around the globe in mental-health policy. Paul’s two sons, Oliver and Nathaniel, are both happily married, and he was made grandfather in June. His wife, Dr. Cherise Rowan, has just completed her residency in pediatrics at the University of Vermont and will begin a three-year fellowship in neonatology at UVM. Eric Fraint W’77, owner of Your Part-Time Controller, LLC, a financial-services firm in Cherry Hill, N.J., was appointed to the board of the Philadelphia Foundation.

Dr. Richard D. Lackman M’77 <[email protected]> in April was named the Magnuson Associate Professor and chair of orthopaedic surgery at Penn; he had served as interim chair since last November.

Michael D. Garz GAr’78 was recently promoted to manager of the central region, based in Douglassville, Pa., of STV Inc., an engineering, architectural, environmental and construction management firm. He lives in Philadelphia with his wife, Sandra L. Garz GCP’75, and their two children.

Dr. Tamar Ezekiel Granor C’78 GEE’81 Gr’86 received the highest honor in her field, the developer’s choice award at the Visual FoxPro Developers’ Conference in May, for her recent, co-authored book, Hacker’s Guide to Visual FoxPro 6.0 (Hentzenwerke Publishing); the award came just as her latest book, Microsoft Office Automation with Visual FoxPro, was published by Hentzenwerke. “Hacker’s Guide is an irreverent and exhaustive reference to Visual FoxPro, Microsoft’s programming environment for developing data-oriented desktop applications and middle-tier components.” Tamar lives in Elkins Park, Pa., with her husband and two sons.

Stanley H. Greene C’78 was appointed chief executive officer of 4anything.com, an online network of interest and city guides that is based in Wayne, Pa. Previously he was president and chief operating officer of Tri-State Media and The Box-USA.

Vincent T. Lombardo C’78, an assistant Ohio attorney general in Cleveland, was honored by the Cleveland-Marshall Law Alumni Association of Cleveland State University for his outstanding service in overseeing its mentor program, and his active participation, both in mentoring students and in recruiting other attorneys as mentors. Vince is also a trustee and life member of the association. He graduated from the Cleveland State law school in 1981.

James Weissman C’78 and his wife, Julia, proudly proclaim the birth of their first child, Jonah Robert, on April 24. The birth took place at home in Mountain View, Calif., <[email protected]>.

E. Joyce Gould GNu’79 received an award last spring from the American Nurses Association for significant contributions to nursing practice and health policy through political and legislative activity. She was recently director of the New York State Nurses Association’s legislative program.

Dr. David Katz D’79 and Jessica Ring Katz SW’77 are proud of daughter, Samantha R. Katz, being accepted at the Wharton School, Class of 2004.

Dana Day McGahey C’79 FA’81 and her husband, Dan, an electrical engineer and trombone player, live in Norristown, Pa., where they home-school their four daughters, Rachel, Sarah, Anna and Mary.

Michael E. Scullin C’79 was appointed executive director of Multilaw, the multinational association of independent law firms. Though it is based in London, he is establishing an Americas office in Philadelphia. He had been a partner in the Philadelphia law firm of Monteverde, McAlee, FitzPatrick, Tanker & Hurd.

Jackie Braun Weinstein C’79, Wellesley, Mass., was elected to the board of Jewish Family & Children’s Service in May. She had earlier served on its disabilities committee, and on the boards of Camp Starfish, a special-needs summer camp, and the Wellesley Players Community. Previously he was a managing director with Banker’s Trust/Deutsche Bank. Dr. Marc J. Kahn C’83 M’87, director of the internal-medicine residency program and associate professor of medicine at Tulane Medical School, received its Gloria P. Walsh Award for inspiring excellence in teaching and promoting high ethical standards. Marc was also elected chair of the general medical faculty of the medical school and chief of staff for the Tulane University Hospital and Clinic for 2000-01.

Scott Wallace Kraft C’83 and his wife, Nadine van der Velde, won a Daytime Emmy (outstanding special-class animated program) for his writing on the Disney Channel’s Rolie Polie Olie. The film East of A, which he and Nadine acted in and co-wrote, recently won the emerging-filmmaker award at the Santa Barbara International Film Fest. I am just ecstatic about being back at my alma mater and working in and around the campus. Dan Rosenberg W’87 is the Democratic candidate for Congress for the 19th District of California (Fresno area). Although he has never held elected office, he won his party’s primary in March with over 68 percent of the vote. He is challenging the three-term incumbent, Republican George Radanovich. Largely agricultural, the 19th district has a 14-percent unemployment rate, and it includes Yosemite, Kings’ Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. After graduating, Dan worked on Wall Street, ran his own screen-printing business, and then helped run a non-profit business employing people in recovery from drug addiction. Heerak C. Kim C’90 e-mails that that he has published “my first novel on-line at (www.fatbrain.com). The novel is entitled Bat Yam. Bat Yam is a city in Israel and also means daughter of the sea in modern Hebrew. I draw on my three-plus years of experiences and observations while living in Israel and conducting doctoral research in ancient Jewish history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Patrick Yau W’95 e-mails that “after two, truly great years at Newbridge, I have left to join AsiaTech Ventures, one of the first venture-capital firms to invest in Internet companies in Asia (www.asiatechv.com). The portfolio includes early round investments in renren.com, asiacontent, AMO, and U.S. companies, phone.com and USWeb.”

Dr. Mark Deshur EAS’96 graduated from the Medical College of Wisconsin in May, and has begun an anesthesiology residency at the New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center program in New York.

Chipman Flowers Jr. C’96 <[email protected]> graduated from the Georgetown University JD/MBA program in May, and in August began with the mergers and acquistions Group of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP in Wilmington, Del.

Priya Hemrajani C’96 <[email protected]> recently married Vivek Nagrani at the Huntington Townhouse on Long Island, N.Y. He is president of OHC (www.ovadafut.com). They currently live in Los Angeles, but plan on moving to New York in the next couple of years. Rosalind Greenberg Karlin C’96 <[email protected]> married Joseph H. Karlin at the James Michener estate in Bucks County, Pa., on May 24, 1998. Alumni in the bridal party included Rachel Bluth Smith W’96, Brandi Katz C’96, Melissa Rosenthal C’96, Joseph Bongiovanni C’95, Lori Karlin Schleinkofer W’97 and Raymond Schleinkofer W’95, Kim Van Naarden Braun C’95 and Andra Fogel C’96. In May Rosalind graduated from Temple University School of Law and will pursue her career as an attorney in Manhattan. Since they lived in Cambridge, Mass., Joseph completed his studies there, and will work in Manhattan as a management consultant with Fortune 500 companies.

Jordan Katz W’96, after four years of working in private equity for Colony Capital in Los Angeles, has joined eVolution Global Partners, a global venture-capital and services firm founded as a joint venture between Kleiner, Perkins, Caulfield & Byers, partners of Texas Pacific Group, and Bain & Co. It is domestically based in San Francisco, though Jordan still maintains his Los Angeles residence.

Dr. Richard G. Miller C’96 graduated from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in May, and has begun an internship at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va.

Dr. Heidi Salsbury C’96 married David Shaff on May 28. The wedding party included Eric Shaff C’98, Dr. Harvey Shaff D’70, Tracey Bowen W’96, Deborah Goodman W’98 and Joanna Diakos C’96, and Alex Abell C’96, Ben Frost W’96, Ian Glazer EAS’96, Adam Goldberg W’95, Dr. Don Nelson D’70 and Dr. Fred Googel D’70 attended. Heidi “graduated from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in June. We are now both doing our medical residencies in Boston; I am currently doing my pediatric training at Children’s Hospital.”

Amanda Schnitner Nu’96 is engaged to Dr. Jonathan Baum; the wedding is planned for May 6, in Scotch Plains, N.J. She graduated from NYU this past May with a master’s in nursing, and then moved to Newburgh, N.Y., where Jonathan is in practice (this note was sent in by Elisa Ahrend Nu’96).

Diane Gross C’97 married David Hess W’97 on June 18. They live in Manhattan, where she writes for TheStreet.com and he is an investment banking associate with Goldman Sachs.

Howard Kozloff C’97 received a Master of Urban Planning degree from the Harvard University School of Design, and will spend this academic year in Sydney on a Harvard fellowship.

Belinda Wong C’97 married Robert Hsu W’97 on May 27, celebrating with family and friends at the Catalina Room in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. Robert is helping launch a new Internet venture in Los Angeles, and Belinda is working in strategic finance for Live Action Films of Dreamworks SKG.

Blaine S. Zavod C’97 graduated from the Emory University Law School with honors in May. He is an associate in real-estate law with the Philadelphia law firm of Dechert, Price & Rhoads. He is happy to be back in Philadelphia.

Roberta Harting C’98 is “pleased to announce my engagement to Matthew Ralph. We will be married in August 2002. In the fall, I
will be a second-year law student at Boston University, concentrating in health and intellectual-property law. Matthew is a physical-commodities trader.”

Matthew J. Peck L’98 has joined the Cleveland law firm of Benesch, Friedlander, Coplan & Aronoff LLP as an associate in its corporate and securities practice group.

Michael W. Tantala EAS’99 completed two years of graduate studies at Princeton, passed his generals, and is now a Ph.D. candidate in civil engineering.

Marisa Toccin C’99, the Young Alumni chairperson of the South Florida regional scholarship gala, was named volunteer-of-the-year for South Florida. She serves on the board of the Dade County Alumni Club.

Joshua Zeichner C’99 reports that the 1999 Poor Richard’s Record (yearbook) won first place for cover design in the Golden Circle Awards of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

Gregory Saldana G’00 <[email protected]> joined the award-winning architectural firm of R. J. Heisenbottle Architects in Coral Gables, Fla., in June. He is currently working on the restoration of the Colony Theater in the Miami Beach historic district.
