Dr. Jared L. Cohon, CE’69, was elected president of Carnegie Mellon University this spring; he had served as dean of the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies at Yale University since 1992. In January, he was appointed chair of the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board.
Thomas T. Winant, G’69, returned to Japan from the U.S. in 1990, as dean of the International Christian University in Tokyo, serving three two-year terms before being appointed assistant to the president and assistant to the managing trustee there; this role combines various duties, including secretary to the university trustees and includes voting membership in the university senate and the university executive committee (cabinet). “As is often the case with faculty in Japan, I moonlight as a lecturer in comparative and international law at Rikkyo University, also in Tokyo.” He also serves as a trustee of the American School in Japan. And he has been involved in the reestablishment of the New York offices of the Japan International Christian University Foundation, which will be a liaison between the university and the North American academic communities.

Capital Cities/ABC, in which a federal jury awarded a $10 million libel judgment as a result of a story that appeared on ABC’s 20/20. After a short stay in the ICU, Allison was doing well and is growing quickly. Shari Birnbaum Dreier, C’88, and David Dreier, C/W’89, announce the birth of their first child, Melissa Jennie Dreier, on December 29, 1996, “an auspicious day for the daughter of two tax lawyers.” Shari has been a tax associate at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison in New York City since graduating from Harvard University with her J.D. in 1991; she received her Masters in Law in taxation from NYU in 1996. David has been working as a tax associate at White & Case in New York City since graduating from Columbia University with his J.D. in 1994; he is currently pursuing (on a part-time basis) his Masters in Law in taxation at NYU Shari and David reside in Secaucus, N.J.
Diane Gwin, C’88, GEd’91, e-mails that she has finished her second year at Boston College Law School, and recently worked as a summer associate at the Boston law firm of Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky & Popeo. After graduating in 1998, she will have a one-year clerkship with a justice on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (the state’s supreme court).
Melanie Pong, C’88, married Jean Salata, W’88. in Hong Kong on April 24. Her brother, David Pong Chun-Yee, W’91, e-mails that “they met at Penn more than 10 years ago and they started dating in April 1987 when they were seniors. Finally, 10 years on, they are husband and wife! We are all totally thrilled.”
Dr. David I. Rose, C’88, M’92, GM’94, and Amy L. Baboff Rose, SW’91, proudly announce the birth of their second daughter, Amanda Lindsay, on March 22. They live in Brookline, Mass., with their three-year-old daughter, Jessica. David and fellow Penn classmate, Dr. Archie R. McGowan, C’88, served as co-chief residents in radiology for the 1996-97 academic year at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston. David will be a fellow in mammography at the Brigham after completing his residency.
George F. Cicotte, C’89, is currently practicing law with the national employment-law firm of Littler Mendelson, resident in the Denver office. He married Wendy Gunter in December 1994. “Wendy and I had our first daughter, Madeline, in April 1996, and I am in the process of adopting my two stepdaughters, Taylor (five) and Abigail (two).”
Nancy Gluck Collet, C/W’89, Los Angeles, e-mailed that, in the spring, she celebrated the one-year wedding anniversary to Christophe Collet. They recently returned from St. Maarten where she worked as a stuntwoman on the film, SPEED 2, released last summer. She has started a new job as the coordinator of the AFI Los Angeles International Film Festival “and would love to hear from any old friends I have lost touch with. Karin Johnson Cryan, C’89, after graduation, traveled abroad for a few months and, upon returning, “packed up my car at home in New Hampshire and headed out to the San Francisco Silicon Valley area,” where she worked for five years as a technical sales writer/editor for 3Com Corporation (which makes the behind-the-scenes networking hardware products that pave the Information Superhighway). “I spent my free time in California windsurfing, rollerblading — and I also earned my private pilot’s license. In June 1996, I married Christopher Cryan, a professional pilot, and my flight instructor.” They now live in the Fort Lauderdale area of Florida. She notes that, as a sign of the times, she teleworks into 3Com in California over ISDN from her home office.
Bret Flaherty, C’89, and Helen Gym, C’90, GEd’96, Philadelphia, announce the birth of their daughter, Carina Mee-Hae Flaherty, on April 21; they also celebrated their second wedding anniversary in July. Dr. Jodi Magness, Gr’89, Medford, Mass., has been promoted to associate professor of Classical and Near Eastern archaeology, without limit of time, in the Classics and art history departments at Tufts University. She was awarded a fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies and a fellowship in Byzantine studies at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C., for this academic year, enabling her to pursue research on early Islamic settlement in Palestine.
David Rutchik, C’89, left his position as an associate in the high-technology/outsourcing group of the Washington, D.C., law firm of Shaw, Pittman, Potts & Trowbridge in January to become the associate general counsel of WinStar Telecommunications, Inc., which is headquartered in Tysons Corner, Va. WinStar is a competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC), currently rolling out a national network to provide local, long distance, and Internet services to businesses.
Patrick Steel, C’89, married Lee Satterfield on May 3, on Edisto Island, S.C. Several Penn classmates attended the ceremony, including Evan Haymes, C’89, and Scott Hamilton, C’89, who served as groomsmen. The couple met while working together at the White House (where Lee is a special assistant to the President and staff director of the Office of Public Liaison); Patrick recently left the White House to serve as deputy chief of staff at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. They live in Washington.

Andrew Winston, C’90, and Alison Strasser Winston, C’89, announce the birth of their son, Noah Benjamin Winston, on December 2. Andrew is working as a computer consultant for Base One International Corp. in New York City. Alison is a staff psychologist at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.
Cpt. Tom Davies, W’91, assumed command of Q Troop, 4th Squadron, 2d Armored Cavalry Regiment on April 28 at Fort Bragg, N. C. The air cavalry unit consists of eight OH-58D Kiowa Warrior armed reconnaissance helicopters and their crews. This summer, “Quickstrike Six” trained his unit at Fort Polk, La., for an extended overseas deployment this fall.
Justine A. Fitzgerald, C/W’91, over the summer, was an associate at Sutherland, Asbill & Brennan in Washington, D.C. This fall, she began her final, third year at Georgetown University Law Center, where she is an editor of the Georgetown Law Journal. On August 9, she married Adam M. Scheinman in Washington, D.C., with Helaine Bader, C’91, and Jennifer Burke Hausmann, C’91, in the wedding party; they live in Arlington, Va.
John S. Owens Jr., W’91, Evanston, Ill., and his wife Laura announce the birth of their son, John S. Owens III, on April 22. John graduated from the Kellogg Business School in June with an MBA in management. In August, he began working as assistant product director for the marketing department of McNeil Consumer Products in Fort Washington, Pa.

Stephen Bell, W’92, and his wife, Julie Berliner Bell, C’93, both moved to Northern Virginia in August. Stephen currently works for Andersen Consulting and will be on a three-year project in the area. Julie resigned from the Plano (Tex.) Independent School District as an 8th-grade mathematics teacher to join her husband. “We are both excited, as this will be the first time we have actually lived together in three years.”

Tara Friend, C’93, Potomac, Md., writes that in March she became engaged to her boyfriend of five years, David Goldstein. Last year she passed the Maryland CPA exam, and was one of the top 10 scorers; she is currently with Aronson, Fetridge & Weigle, in Rockville, Md.

Jennifer Kornreich, C’93, after receiving an M.F.A. in creative writing at Emerson College in Boston, moved to Manhattan, where she has been working as a freelance journalist for almost two years. “I’ve already written for over 25 publications, including The New York Times, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Observer-and, of course, good old Philadelphia magazine, where I got my very first article published (well, after the DP). Rob Janssen, EAS’94, Hackensack, N.J., is one of six partners who started an Internet-products company approximately two years ago. The company is called SurfXpress, LCC (www.sxpress.com), and two other Penn graduates are partners Henry Chen, EAS’93, and Warren Lee, EAS’93. SurfXpress is based in Hackensack, N.J., and provides Internet access to the northern New Jersey area as well as Web-hosting services nationally. They also design and market their own Internet concepts; one example is Surf University (www.surfu.com), a site that educates new Web users and serves as a reference for finding top-quality Web sites for specific areas of interest. “We are currently all working on SurfXpress in addition to our day jobs. However, our customer base is growing, and we are hoping to move into fulltime work at SurfXpress during the next year.”
Adam Korengold, C’94, Washington, D.C., has been working for the last two years at the IRIS Center, a think tank and technical-assistance organization at the University of Maryland’s Department of Economics. Two of his colleagues are also Penn alumni, both from the Economics Ph.D. program: Dr. Peter Murrell, Gr’77, and Dr. Satu Kahkonen, Gr’92. “Peter has worked on projects in Mongolia and Russia, while Satu’s projects have been in India and, more recently, Africa. On the side, I write book reviews for The American Reporter, an online newspaper with correspondents throughout the world. Jane Havsy, C’96, joins me on the book-review staff. I’m also playing a lot of soccer this spring.” This fall, he started work towards a Master of International Affairs degree at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.

Heather Berner, C’96, New York City, a graduate of Georgetown School of Foreign Service and MBA progam, has just completed her first year at Columbia Law School and plans to pursue a career in entertainment law. She is engaged to be married to Andrew Sachs (a former investment banker with Morgan Stanley, who works for a Broadway theater merchandising company). They will be married next March and plan to move to Los Angeles after Heather’s graduation.

The wedding date is September 26, 1998, in my hometown of Grosse Pointe, Mich., and Dave and I are looking forward to a lot of alums attending. I’m presently working for Ford Motor Company in finance and Dave is finishing up his master’s degree in higher-education administration from the University of Michigan.”
