Dr. Thomas W. Kirkman, C’43, Atlantis, Fla., pastor emeritus of the Royal Poinciana Chapel, writes that the chapel published a biography of him, which includes 16 sermons he preached there.

Dr. Jerome Zwanger, C’44, Massapequa Park, N.Y., is “now semi-retired but still very active in the practice of radiology in Long Island;” he formerly served on the faculty of S.U.N.Y. at Stony Brook. He is a member of the Visiting Committee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He serves as President of the Class of 1944.

1950s

Charles H. McKinney, W’52, Elkhart, Ind., recently retired from Jayco, Inc., manufacturers of recreation vehicles, as vice president of sales and marketing. Chuck and his wife, Jean, will continue to live in Elkhart and plan to do a lot of traveling in their motor home.

Dr. Lewis B. Weisfeld, C’52, Philadelphia, was awarded the 1997 Honor Scroll of the Philadelphia Institute of Chemists, for his numerous contributions to the science and technology of polymer stabilization, and for his concern with and long involvement in the environmentally sound manufacture and use of chemicals in ways that also protect the safety and health of those who produce and use them. Stuart A. Kernus, W’53, Rockville, Md., writes that he has retired from the Washington-area office of Kershenbaum, Abel, Kernus & Wychulis, where he was the managing partner for the past 10 years. “I now have five grandchildren, and I am looking forward to spending more time with them and my three sons.”

Paul T. Nettler, W’53, WG’54, Greenvale, N.Y., and his wife, Susan, proudly announce the births of their first grandchild, Melanie Francine Nettler, on March 4, and their second grandchild, Maxwell Duke Nettler, on March 27.

John Weichsel, C’54, WG’56, Town Manager of Southington, Conn., completed two terms as chair of the Connecticut Interlocal Risk Management Agency, that supplies insurance to townships and special districts in the state.

Irene Sofian Herman, C’56, Sarasota, Fla., writes that after more than 15 years as a theatre critic on radio, tv, and in print, she returned to performing in the musical Taking My Turn that showed last spring there, “to unanimous critical acclaim and positive audience reaction.” She continues to write an arts-review column for a local paper and is a contributing writer to This Month on Stage, a national theater guide.

Dr. Charles Knecht, V’56, Opelika, Ala., retired in June as professor of small-animal medicine and surgery and head of the small-animal clinic at Auburn University.

1960s

Dr. Leonard C. Marcus, V’62, Newton, Mass., received a distinguished service award from the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association for his expertise in diseases transmitted from animals to humans.

Roberta Drayer Berger, CW’63, Phoenix, joined the estate-planning and probate group of the Phoenix office of Snell and Wilmer in June. Previously, she was Western regional fiduciary counsel to the Banc One Corporation. She serves as chair of the continuing legal-education committee of the Maricopa County Bar Association.

Nat Greenfield, W’63, GL’67, and his wife, Ann, are the owners and directors of Camp Robindel for Girls on Lake Winnipesaukee, near Center Harbor, N.H. Last summer was their 21st year operating the resident sports camp.

Dr. Robert C. Solomon, C’63, the Quincy Lee Centennial Professor of Philosophy and Business and a Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, and his wife, Kathleen M. Higgins, recently had two books published by Oxford University Press, A Short History of Philosophy, and A Passion for Wisdom, now a Book-of-the-Month-Club alternate selection.

Bob Driegert, W’64, Richardson, Tex., a partner in the Dallas law firm of Friedman, Driegert & Hsueh, was named the Dallas metropolitan chair for the United States Olympic Committee. He serves as national treasurer of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. And he is chair of the Dallas County Republican Party. He also serves as president of the Richardson Children’s Theater Board.

Beryl Lieff Benderly, CW’67, G’66, Washington, D.C., a freelance writer, won an EMMA (Exceptional Merit Media Award), which is sponsored by Radcliffe College and the National Women’s Political Caucus, for an article in SELF magazine, in September 1996.

Dr. Philip Scranton, C’68, Gr’75, director of historical research at the Hagley Museum and Library in Wilmington, Del., was appointed to the Kranzberg Professorship in the History of Technology at the Georgia Institute of Technology for this academic year; he will continue to reside in Philadelphia, commuting to Atlanta during the school year. His book, Endless Novelty: Specialty Production and American Industrialization, was published this year by Princeton University Press.

Dr. Jared L. Cohon, CE’69, was elected president of Carnegie Mellon University this spring; he had served as dean of the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies at Yale University since 1992. In January, he was appointed chair of the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board.

Thomas T. Winant, G’69, returned to Japan from the U.S. in 1990, as dean of the International Christian University in Tokyo, serving three two-year terms before being appointed assistant to the president and assistant to the managing trustee there; this role combines various duties, including secretary to the university trustees and includes voting membership in the university senate and the university executive committee (cabinet). “As is often the case with faculty in Japan, I moonlight as a lecturer in comparative and international law at Rikkyo University, also in Tokyo.” He also serves as a trustee of the American School in Japan. And he has been involved in the reestablishment of the New York offices of the Japan International Christian University Foundation, which will be a liaison between the university and the North American academic communities.

1970s

Helene B. Kornblatt, C’70, is a principal with the consulting firm of Shapiro & Associates in Seattle. She lives nearby in Kirkland, Wash., with her husband and 10-year-old son.

Mary McGinnis, C’70, Sante Fe, N.M., was a finalist in the poetry category for the 1997 Literary Awards of PEN Center USA West, for her Listening for Cactus, published by Sherman Asher Publishing.

Dr. Harvey Shapiro, GCP’70, received a doctorate in ecological regional planning from Kyoto University in Japan. He continues teaching that field at Osaka Geijutsu University, where he has been teaching since 1971.

Dr. Kay Cothran Craigie, Gr’72, Paoli, Pa., is one of 15 directors of the American Radio Relay League, Inc., the national society of amateur radio (ham) operators; this year she is serving on the board’s executive committee.

James D. Morris, C’72, L’75, announces the formation of his new law firm, Langsam Stevens & Morris LLP, in Philadelphia, as a name partner concentrating in environmental law and general civil litigation.

David D. Schein, C’73, Houston, an attorney-mediator and human resources consultant, announces transition of his practice from employment law to full-time mediation and consulting, starting this summer. Douglas Block, C’74, Philadelphia, has become a counsel for the Pennsylvania Securities Commission, in its enforcement & litigation division. Micheal J. Haubenstock, ChE’74, Stamford, Conn., is a partner in Price Waterhouse, New York City, specializing in financial-services risk-management strategies.

John Sopko, C’74, e-mails that “after 14 wonderful years on the Hill, I am moving on.” As of May, he joined the general counsel’s office of the Department of Commerce, in charge of all investigative matters.

Dr. Louis E. Baxter Sr., C’75, a general internist who serves as medical director of the alcohol and chemical dependency service of Penn State Geisinger Health System, in Danville, Pa., was appointed to the board of the Physicians Health Program of the Pennsylvania Medical Society’s Scientific Trust Association. Recently, he was also appointed to the newly established Forensic Medicine Committee of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. He is also a charter member of the board of the Pennsylvania Society of Addiction Medicine. He was also selected as one of the ‘the Best Doctors in America’ for addiction medicine.

Larry Schecker, W’75, and his wife, Rene, are proud to annouce the birth of Sarah Emily Schecker on December 22, 1996, who joins her brother, Justin (seven). Larry is an attorney-adviser in the Office of General Counsel of the Federal Communications Commission.

Mike Triantafellou, C’75, Arlington, Tex., was recently elected president of the North American Truckstop Network at its annual membership meeting in Nashville. He also serves on the board of FFP Partners, Ft. Worth, and is its vice president of retail operations.

Judi Brown, C’76, was recently promoted to the position of strategic planner for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and is relocating to Washington, D.C., from Brooklyn, N.Y. “I am delighted to know that Howard Gensler, C’83, is alive and well, and funny!”

Alan H. Fein, W’76, Key Biscayne, Fla., a shareholder in the Miami law firm of Stearns, Weaver, Miller, Weissler, Alhadeff & Sitterson, P.A., was recently lead counsel for the plaintiffs in Levan v. Capital Cities/ABC, in which a federal jury awarded a $10 million libel judgment as a result of a story that appeared on ABC’s 20/20. He writes that for four consecutive years he “has returned to Philadelphia, donned his football gear, risked life and limb, and played against Penn’s lightweight football team in the annual alumni game;” he salutes “coach Bill Wagner and the 1996 lightweight football team on their first ELFL title.”

Sunny Mindel, SAMP’76, New York City, was named deputy press secretary for Mayor Rudolph Giuliani’s re-election bid this year. She had been director of public affairs for the city’s Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications. She writes that her brother, Lee Mindel, C’73, had his design for the recently built Fila headquarters in Baltimore featured in the June issue of Interior Design, and his design for a 3800-sq-ft. Manhattan rooftop-duplex expansion (“no minor accomplishment in New York City”) as the cover story in April’s Architecture magazine and featured in the May issue of House and Garden.

Melanie Smith Glogower, W’77, Monroe, N.Y., e-mails that she and her husband, David, are “the proud parents of two wonderful babies — Johanna and Adam.” During naptime, she dons her hat as publisher of the Smith University Funding Report and the Smith Medical Funding Report, providing information to the research and medical communities about private foundation-grant opportunities. “And, here and there I am still playing the piano, most recently for a community-theater production of The King & I. I look forward to hear from my long-lost Penn friends.”

Dr. Michael Neuman, ChE’77, GCP’86, GFA’86, received a Ph.D. in city planning from the University of California at Berkeley in 1996, and has founded the Michael Neuman Consultancy, located in Berkeley, which specializes in strategy, management, and design for sustainability in city, regional, and environmental planning.

Dr. William Charles Hale, Gr’78, e-mails that, in the years since leaving full-time teaching, he has been ordained as a priest in the Episcopal Church and now works full-time as spiritual-care case manager for the Hospice of Michigan. Divorced, with one child, he lives in Detroit.

Dr. Kurt B. Nolte, C’78, and his wife, Dr. Bronwyn E. Wilson, C’78, GEd’79, M’88, Albuquerque, N.M., announce the birth of their second daughter, Averill Sage Nolte. They both are on the faculty of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.

Dr. Leialoha Mark Perkins, Gr’78, Makaha, Hawaii, was the convenor of the first oral-traditions segment at the International Popular Culture Conference of the Pacific, held in Honolulu in January 1996, which was co-sponsored by the University of Hawaii and Brigham Young University (Hawaii).

Fred A. Schneyer, C’78, recently returned to the Philadelphia area from North Florida; he is now a financial writer at the Vanguard Group in Malvern, Pa.

Richard J. Lobron, C’79, is the deputy executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. He and his wife, Mary, and their daughter, Maria, reside in Berwyn, Pa.

Jeanne Rand Naglak, C’79, has joined MetLife Trust Company as senior vice president and chief fiduciary officer, managing their personal-trust division. She is also on the board of trustees of the College of New Jersey (formerly Trenton State College). Her husband, Kenneth Naglak, W’78, is vice president and relationship manager in the commercial-banking division of PNC Bank. They have a two-year-old daughter, Stephanie Blair Naglak, and are living in West Windsor, N.J.

1980s

Allan N. Rauch, C’80, L’83, has been named general counsel at Bed, Bath & Beyond, a national housewares retailer. He lives with his wife and three children in Short Hills, N.J.

Barbara Salinitro-Nicholas, C’80, Douglaston, N.Y., was appointed a New York State Family Court Judge last December; she is currently sitting in Brooklyn. Previously, she was the head of New York City’s family-court division in the Bronx.

Dr. James C. Zgoda, C’80, and his wife, Susan, announce the birth of their second child, Justin Peter, on January 19. Jim is owner-director of Otterkill Animal Hospital in Campbell Hall, N.Y.

Christine L. Beattie, C/W’81, and her husband, H. Tres Meyer, announce the birth of their first child, Madeline Beattie Meyer, on August 12, 1996; they live in Manhattan.

Robert V. Deutsch, W’81, was promoted to president of Executive Risk Indemnity, Inc., a publicly traded insurance group, and elected to its board of directors. He lives in Farmington, Conn., with his wife, Laurie, and two daughters, Allison (eight) and Katherine (six).

Joe Feldman, W’81, e-mails “happy to report that life is good in Chicago.” He is living in the suburbs with Jan, his wife of seven years, and their four-year-old son, Henry. His position in commercial development for Monsanto, in their Food/Nutrition/Consumer sector, involves acquisition and new-product development, including efforts in Europe and Latin America.

Dr. Joseph Friedberg, EAS’81, e-mails that, after a 15-year Boston hiatus (completing medical school at Harvard, surgical residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and a cardiothoracic surgical fellowship at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital), he returned to Penn, joining the surgical staff at HUP as a thoracic surgeon in October 1996. He is married to Dr. Jo Buyske, a general surgeon at Penn, whom he met at Mass General during his training. They have three-year-old twins, Emilia and David, “who could not possibly be any cuter, smarter or funnier (my unbiased opinion). We bought a great old house in Center City, near Rittenhouse Square, and love living in Philly. I haven’t rowed much for the past 15 years, but now that I have a little more control over my time, I’m hoping to get out on the Schuylkill on a regular basis. Naomi Godfrey, C’81, West Windsor, N.J., and her husband, Chip Loeb, announce the birth of their second daughter, Tamar Ilana Loeb, on January 21.

Douglas J. Howell, EAS’81, has joined Philips Broadband Networks, Inc., in Manlius, N.Y., as group product manager for cable-telephone products. He has moved with his wife, Brenda Lyles Howell, C’82, to N.Y. with their three children: Sarah (ten), Jordan (nine), and Micah (seven).

Robert W. Kelly, W’81, Winnetka, Ill., was named partner in the Chicago office of the investment-management firm of Sanford Bernstein & Co. He and his wife, Carol Meylan, are proud to announce the birth of their son, Gavin Charles Meylan Kelly, on May 13. Gavin joins his sisters, Erin (seven), and Courtney (four).

Eytan A. Laor, W’81, moved from New York City to Miami Beach in 1991. He married Holly Brent on March 24, 1996. He is president of Southeast Corporate Realty, Inc., his own, commercial real estate firm.

Robyn Dawson Bryant, C’82, with her husband, Roscoe C. Bryant Jr., and their son, Chad Anwar Bryant, welcomed their newest addition, Zaire Diallo Bryant, on May 20, 1996. Robyn recently began a new position as director of social services with the AIDS Resource Foundation for Children, Inc., in Newark, N.J.

Howard C. Griboff, C’82, Silver Spring, Md., married Amy L. Gray on October 13, 1996; currently he is an attorney-adviser at the Federal Communications Commission in Washington, D.C.

Elizabeth Harris Hyams, C’82, married Warren P. Hyams on February 9 in Philadelphia.

Ted Marcus, C’82, has recently returned to the U.S. after having lived in Israel since the summer of 1982. Dr. Vincent J. Vilasi, C’82, Herndon, Va., and Lea K. Vilasi, announce the birth of their son, Vincent Jr., on March 1. Vincent is a partner with Fair Oaks Anesthesia Associates, a private practice in Fairfax.

Dr. Robert J. Citronberg, C’83, writes that he has been in private medical practice for three years in suburban Chicago, since completing a fellowship in infectious diseases. He and his wife, Erin, are the proud parents of Jessica Ariel, who was born in 1996.

Randy Malamud, C’83, associate professor of English at Georgia State University, and Wendy Simonds, C’84, announce the birth of their second son, Benjamin Isaac Simonds-Malamud, on February 25. Simonds’s most recent book is Abortion at Work (Rutgers University Press, 1996), and Malamud’s is Reading Zoos: Representations of Animals and Captivity (Macmillan, 1997).

Dr. Barry Weinstock, C’83, GM’90, lives in Florida with his wife, Jodi, and two sons, Zachary (five) and Andrew (one). Currently, he is director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Northside Medical Center and a partner at the Bay Area Heart Center in St. Petersburg. He also is a member of the Penn Club of Tampa Bay.

Dr. Laurie Cohen, C’84, and her husband, Ron Samuels, had a baby girl, Rachel Claire Samuels, on January 15. Laurie is a staff physician in pediatric endocrinology at Children’s Hospital in Boston.

Donna M. Cole, C’84, Little Falls, N.J., recently had her first book, Liturgical Ministry: A Practical Guide to Spirituality, published by Resource Publications. This work was the culmination of several years spent presenting workshops, writing articles on liturgy, consulting for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark, and coordinating liturgy for a local parish.

Dr. Sharon G. Feldman, C’84, Lawrence, Kans., and Barcelona, was recently granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of Spanish at the University of Kansas. Her first book, Allegories of Dissent: The Theater of Agustin Gomez-Arcos, is forthcoming from Bucknell University Press. She is presently completing a second book on theatrical performance in Madrid and Barcelona at the end of the 20th century.

Judith Stern Goldstein, C’84, GLA’86, joined the firm of Boucher & James, Inc., of Doylestown, Pa., in March and is directing their newly formed department of landscape architecture and planning. Judy lives in Doylestown with her husband, Michael, and four-year-old daughter, Ellen.

Amy Wissoker Graham, C’84, and Andrew Graham, C’84, with big brother, Ethan, announce the birth of their twin daughters, Kaitlin Michelle and Alyssa Sarah, on February 14. Amy is a librarian at Swarthmore College and Andy is manager of computing at Keystone Foods.

Joanne Klinghoffer Klein, C’84, has become associate director of the Arts & Business Council of Philadelphia, an affiliate of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. She and her husband, Alexander, reside in Center City, Philadelphia.

Khalil K. Pirani, C’84, after completing a master’s-degree program in architecture from MIT in 1989, has been working in the Boston area, currently working for Graham Gund Architects in Cambridge, Mass. A visiting scholar in architecture at MIT, he is working on a book titled “Understanding Islamic Architecture.” He had received the AIA Advanced Research Scholarship in 1995 and 1996 to study the architectural trend of mosques in the USA.

Laura Richlin, C’84, and her husband, Hap Haven, welcomed their first child, a boy, Gil Perry Haven, on November 24; they live in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. She is a human-relations consultant, working with school administrations and teachers. “Parenting seems to be the most challenging and rewarding work I’ve ever done!”

N. Thatcher Scharpf, C’84, and his wife, Donna, are happy to announce the birth of their first child, Nathalie Isabella, on December 18, in Donna’s hometown of New Orleans. All three are now back living in Warsaw, Poland, where Thatcher is a second secretary at the American Embassy.

Saul Zales, EE’84, was recently promoted to division-level marketing manager at Intel Corp. He and his wife, Wendi Stern Zales, C’84, GEd’84, live in Loomis, Calif. Wendi left Intel three years ago to focus on raising their children, Jonathan and Daniel, ages seven and five.

Pamela Suttenberg Federbusch, C’85, e-mails that she is currently a senior vice president at Moody’s Investors Service in New York City responsible for rating not-for-profit healthcare entities. She has been married since November 29, 1987 to Andrew Federbusch, W’83, and they live in Westfield, N.J. They have three children: Casey Sara, born November 4, 1993, and 11-month-old twins, Adam Brett and Zoe Morgan, born November 5, 1996. “Needless to say, celebrating birthdays is going to be a bit crazy from now on.” Andy is the director of real estate for Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, also in New York City.

Dr. Martin S. Keller, C’85, is completing fellowship training in adult and pediatric trauma and critical care at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He has accepted a fellowship position in pediatric surgery at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, in St. Louis, beginning in July 1998.

David R. Lang, EE’85, Nashua, N.H., and his wife, Jacinta, announce the birth of their son, Michael David, on December 7. Dave is working as a software engineer at Cabletron Systems in Merrimack.

Janet Perlmutter Schwartz, C’85, and Steven Douglas Schwartz, WG’80, are proud to announce the birth of their third child, Matthew Zev Schwartz, on April 19. They also have two daughters, Rachel (six) and Sarah (three).

Sandra Hughes Conklin, C’86, sales-administration manager for Coty U.S. Inc., the fragrance and cosmetics company in New York City, married E. Foster Conklin Jr., a vice president with Merrill Lynch, on June 1, 1996. “For our honeymoon, we spent an incredible two weeks sailing (with a crew!) around French Polynesia.” They live in Englewood, N.J.

Dr. John S. Cross III, W’86, Sacramento, Calif., completed his residency in June at the University of California, Davis, where he was chief resident in anesthesiology. This fall, he began a one-year fellowship in pediatric anesthesia at the Boston Children’s Hospital.

George M. Graffy, W’86, is living in Plano, Tex., with his wife, Fran, and two boys, Eric (four), and Andrew (two). “We are happy to announce the birth of our daughter, Kristina Claire, on April 19.” He is currently a vice president of marketing for Pizza Hut in Dallas.

Dr. Marvin H. Kim, C’86, was appointed as the chief anesthesiologist and the chair of anesthesia at Albany Memorial Hospital in Albany, New York.

Ron Z. Opher, C’86, and Katie Hartley Opher, a music therapist “and new mom,” proudly announce the birth of their daughter, Abigail Dora, on May 12. Ron is a contract and collection attorney in sole practice in Valley Forge, Pa.

Monica Sanders Embery, C’87, and husband, Richard, proudly announce the birth of their daughters, Allyssa Christine, on June 20, 1994, and Elizabeth Marie, on April 11, 1996.

Mitch Feinman, C’87, married Abby Turnoff, W’91, October last year and moved from San Francisco to New York City, where he is director of business development and marketing for online media at ABC, Inc. (a division of the Walt Disney Company), and Abby is a trusts & estates attorney at Rosenman & Colin, a Manhattan law firm.

Daniel A. Petronella, C’87, e-mails that last November, he accepted a position in product development at Walt Disney World in Orlando.

Randi Roy C’87, WG’91, and her husband, Howard Cutler, announce the birth of their son, Max Jonah Cutler, on January 20. The family lives in New York City.

Dr. Daniel E. Wollman, EAS/W’87, GEng’90, Gr’96, GM’97, finished his Ph.D. in the Department of Neuroscience last year and graduated this spring from Penn Med to begin a neurology residency at Yale University. He resides in Newtown, Conn., with his wife, Dr. Debra Pollack, and their daughters Joanna (three) and Caroline (one). “It was difficult leaving Philadelphia after 12 years (and five degrees from Penn), but we are all looking forward to our new life up North.”

Katherine Kay Brown, Nu’88, GNu’91, Oakdale, Pa., and her husband, Edward, are pleased to announce the birth of their first child, Allison Kay Brown, on May 11. After a short stay in the ICU, Allison was doing well and is growing quickly. Kathy is working as a cardio-thoracic clinical nurse specialist at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, and also consults for several nursing and pharmaceutical companies. She has recently published a chapter on IV conscious sedation.

Shari Birnbaum Dreier, C’88, and David Dreier, C/W’89, announce the birth of their first child, Melissa Jennie Dreier, on December 29, 1996, “an auspicious day for the daughter of two tax lawyers.” Shari has been a tax associate at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison in New York City since graduating from Harvard University with her J.D. in 1991; she received her Masters in Law in taxation from NYU in 1996. David has been working as a tax associate at White & Case in New York City since graduating from Columbia University with his J.D. in 1994; he is currently pursuing (on a part-time basis) his Masters in Law in taxation at NYU Shari and David reside in Secaucus, N.J.

Diane Gwin, C’88, GEd’91, e-mails that she has finished her second year at Boston College Law School, and recently worked as a summer associate at the Boston law firm of Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky & Popeo. After graduating in 1998, she will have a one-year clerkship with a justice on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (the state’s supreme court).

Melanie Pong, C’88, married Jean Salata, W’88. in Hong Kong on April 24. Her brother, David Pong Chun-Yee, W’91, e-mails that “they met at Penn more than 10 years ago and they started dating in April 1987 when they were seniors. Finally, 10 years on, they are husband and wife! We are all totally thrilled.”

Dr. David I. Rose, C’88, M’92, GM’94, and Amy L. Baboff Rose, SW’91, proudly announce the birth of their second daughter, Amanda Lindsay, on March 22. They live in Brookline, Mass., with their three-year-old daughter, Jessica. David and fellow Penn classmate, Dr. Archie R. McGowan, C’88, served as co-chief residents in radiology for the 1996-97 academic year at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston. David will be a fellow in mammography at the Brigham after completing his residency.

George F. Cicotte, C’89, is currently practicing law with the national employment-law firm of Littler Mendelson, resident in the Denver office. He married Wendy Gunter in December 1994. “Wendy and I had our first daughter, Madeline, in April 1996, and I am in the process of adopting my two stepdaughters, Taylor (five) and Abigail (two).”

Nancy Gluck Collet, C/W’89, Los Angeles, e-mailed that, in the spring, she celebrated the one-year wedding anniversary to Christophe Collet. They recently returned from St. Maarten where she worked as a stuntwoman on the film, SPEED 2, released last summer. She has started a new job as the coordinator of the AFI Los Angeles International Film Festival “and would love to hear from any old friends I have lost touch with. Karin Johnson Cryan, C’89, after graduation, traveled abroad for a few months and, upon returning, “packed up my car at home in New Hampshire and headed out to the San Francisco Silicon Valley area,” where she worked for five years as a technical sales writer/editor for 3Com Corporation (which makes the behind-the-scenes networking hardware products that pave the Information Superhighway). “I spent my free time in California windsurfing, rollerblading — and I also earned my private pilot’s license. In June 1996, I married Christopher Cryan, a professional pilot, and my flight instructor.” They now live in the Fort Lauderdale area of Florida. She notes that, as a sign of the times, she teleworks into 3Com in California over ISDN from her home office.

Bret Flaherty, C’89, and Helen Gym, C’90, GEd’96, Philadelphia, announce the birth of their daughter, Carina Mee-Hae Flaherty, on April 21; they also celebrated their second wedding anniversary in July. Helen is a fifth-grade teacher in the Philadelphia public schools and co-president of the board of directors of Asian Americans United, located in Chinatown. Bret is a corporate litigator with Berger & Montague, P.C.

Scott Krase, W’89, and Christie Colello Krase, W’89, proudly announce the birth of their first child, Jackson Scott, on March 4. Scott and Christie live in New York City, where Scott is a principal at Oak Hill Advisors, Inc. Christine is currently on maternity leave from Grey Advertising, where she is a spot media buyer.

Dr. Jodi Magness, Gr’89, Medford, Mass., has been promoted to associate professor of Classical and Near Eastern archaeology, without limit of time, in the Classics and art history departments at Tufts University. She was awarded a fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies and a fellowship in Byzantine studies at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C., for this academic year, enabling her to pursue research on early Islamic settlement in Palestine.

David Rutchik, C’89, left his position as an associate in the high-technology/outsourcing group of the Washington, D.C., law firm of Shaw, Pittman, Potts & Trowbridge in January to become the associate general counsel of WinStar Telecommunications, Inc., which is headquartered in Tysons Corner, Va. WinStar is a competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC), currently rolling out a national network to provide local, long distance, and Internet services to businesses.

Patrick Steel, C’89, married Lee Satterfield on May 3, on Edisto Island, S.C. Several Penn classmates attended the ceremony, including Evan Haymes, C’89, and Scott Hamilton, C’89, who served as groomsmen. The couple met while working together at the White House (where Lee is a special assistant to the President and staff director of the Office of Public Liaison); Patrick recently left the White House to serve as deputy chief of staff at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. They live in Washington.

Reed Slogoff, C’90, and Gail Luterman, GEd’94, were married on April 12, at the Rittenhouse Hotel in Philadelphia. Reed is an associate in the corporate department at Dilworth, Paxson, Kalish & Kauffman; Gail teaches third grade at Penn Wynne elementary school on the Main Line.

Andrew Winston, C’90, and Alison Strasser Winston, C’89, announce the birth of their son, Noah Benjamin Winston, on December 2. Andrew is working as a computer consultant for Base One International Corp. in New York City. Alison is a staff psychologist at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.

Cpt. Tom Davies, W’91, assumed command of Q Troop, 4th Squadron, 2d Armored Cavalry Regiment on April 28 at Fort Bragg, N. C. The air cavalry unit consists of eight OH-58D Kiowa Warrior armed reconnaissance helicopters and their crews. This summer, “Quickstrike Six” trained his unit at Fort Polk, La., for an extended overseas deployment this fall.

Justine A. Fitzgerald, C/W’91, over the summer, was an associate at Sutherland, Asbill & Brennan in Washington, D.C. This fall, she began her final, third year at Georgetown University Law Center, where she is an editor of the Georgetown Law Journal. On August 9, she married Adam M. Scheinman in Washington, D.C., with Helaine Bader, C’91, and Jennifer Burke Hausmann, C’91, in the wedding party; they live in Arlington, Va.

John S. Owens Jr., W’91, Evanston, Ill., and his wife Laura announce the birth of their son, John S. Owens III, on April 22. John graduated from the Kellogg Business School in June with an MBA in management. In August, he began working as assistant product director for the marketing department of McNeil Consumer Products in Fort Washington, Pa.

Arvind Puri, EAS/W’91, Pleasanton, Calif., and his wife, Robin, are pleased to announce the birth of their son, Ryan Nath Puri, on November 5. “He already has a Penn sweatshirt and is looking [forward] to being part of the Class of 2019.”

Stephen Bell, W’92, and his wife, Julie Berliner Bell, C’93, both moved to Northern Virginia in August. Stephen currently works for Andersen Consulting and will be on a three-year project in the area. Julie resigned from the Plano (Tex.) Independent School District as an 8th-grade mathematics teacher to join her husband. “We are both excited, as this will be the first time we have actually lived together in three years.”

Dr. Suzanne Sims, C’92, graduated from Harvard Medical School with an M.D. degree and the John F. Kennedy School of Government with a Masters in Public Policy in health-care policy in June. She has started residency in internal medicine at Stanford University Medical Center.

Philip M. Forlano, C’93, Alexandria, Va., has joined ABD Communications, the Washington-based public-affairs and strategic-planning firm. He previously worked for the National Campaign of Dole/Kemp’96, in the rapid-response team that shaped the talk-radio strategy for Dole surrogates during the final weeks of the campaign.

Tara Friend, C’93, Potomac, Md., writes that in March she became engaged to her boyfriend of five years, David Goldstein. Last year she passed the Maryland CPA exam, and was one of the top 10 scorers; she is currently with Aronson, Fetridge & Weigle, in Rockville, Md.

Stephen Golden, EAS’93, has recently transferred to the London office of Goldman Sachs as an analyst-programmer, providing technical solutions to the rapidly changing regulatory environments of Europe and Asia. “I am also about to make my London stage debut in a musical with an amateur dramatics society.”

Allison Volk Isaacman, C’93, is currently working at Hauck and Associates, Inc., an association management firm (e-mail address is avolk@accci.org). Jennifer Kornreich, C’93, after receiving an M.F.A. in creative writing at Emerson College in Boston, moved to Manhattan, where she has been working as a freelance journalist for almost two years. “I’ve already written for over 25 publications, including The New York Times, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Observer-and, of course, good old Philadelphia magazine, where I got my very first article published (well, after the DP). I’m a contributing editor at Maxim, a new men’s magazine, and at Detour, an L.A.-based entertainment/fashion glossy; I’m also the sex columnist (!!!) at the Long Island Voice, a new weekly run by the publishers of the Village Voice.”

Lynn Roland, C’93, New York City, graduated from Columbia University School of Law in May 1996, and is working in the corporate department of the Manhattan office of McDermott, Will & Emery.

Dr. Jennifer Trupkin, C’93, Miami, happily announces her engagement to Wayne Pollak; they plan to marry in March 1998. This summer she graduated from the University of Florida College of Medicine and is now in an obstetric/gynecology residency at the University of Miami.

Matthew J. Canner, C’94, New York City, has accepted a position in the personal financial-counseling group of Ernst & Young LLP N.Y.-Consultants, dividing his energies between entrepreneurial clientele, corporate executives, and large-employee, financial education. He spent the last few years as a private financial planner for investment bankers with the Cowan Group.

Dr. Jennifer N. Forshey, C’94, D’97, has moved to Boston and is in a six-year, M.D.-integrated, oral-maxillofacial surgery residency at Massachusetts General/Harvard Medical School. She is also completing a M.S. in dental anthropology and forensics at Penn.

Alejandro S. Hope, C’94, e-mails that he has returned to academic life, and is “now doing a Ph.D. in politics at Princeton University.”

Rob Janssen, EAS’94, Hackensack, N.J., is one of six partners who started an Internet-products company approximately two years ago. The company is called SurfXpress, LCC (www.sxpress.com), and two other Penn graduates are partners Henry Chen, EAS’93, and Warren Lee, EAS’93. SurfXpress is based in Hackensack, N.J., and provides Internet access to the northern New Jersey area as well as Web-hosting services nationally. They also design and market their own Internet concepts; one example is Surf University (www.surfu.com), a site that educates new Web users and serves as a reference for finding top-quality Web sites for specific areas of interest. “We are currently all working on SurfXpress in addition to our day jobs. However, our customer base is growing, and we are hoping to move into fulltime work at SurfXpress during the next year.”

Adam Korengold, C’94, Washington, D.C., has been working for the last two years at the IRIS Center, a think tank and technical-assistance organization at the University of Maryland’s Department of Economics. Two of his colleagues are also Penn alumni, both from the Economics Ph.D. program: Dr. Peter Murrell, Gr’77, and Dr. Satu Kahkonen, Gr’92. “Peter has worked on projects in Mongolia and Russia, while Satu’s projects have been in India and, more recently, Africa. On the side, I write book reviews for The American Reporter, an online newspaper with correspondents throughout the world. Jane Havsy, C’96, joins me on the book-review staff. I’m also playing a lot of soccer this spring.” This fall, he started work towards a Master of International Affairs degree at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.

Tanisha Lyon, C’94, and Donald Brown, W’94, are thrilled to announce that they are engaged and planning to be married in May 1998. Tanisha has accepted a position as an assistant attorney general for Ohio, and Donald is a consultant in the Management Solutions Group at Deloitte and Touche LLP. They reside in Columbus.

Sabrina Rubin, C’94, Philadelphia, is a staff writer at Philadelphia magazine. Her April 1996 article “Intimate Intimidation” was nominated for the National Magazine Awards, in the Public Interest category.

David R. Shane, C’94, is director of marketing at RC/Braithwaite Communications in Philadelphia. He previously worked as a news-promotion producer at WCPX-TV, a CBS affiliate in Orlando, Fla.

Jason Ur, C’94, is in his third year of a Ph.D. program in Near Eastern archaeology at the University of Chicago; recent field work was in Israel, Jordan, and Egypt.

John Grobe, C’95, is married to the former Jennifer McNellis and they have one daughter, Madeline Ann. Currently, he is a fire support officer for the 1st Battalion, 10th Field Artillery at Ft. Benning, Ga. He recently served as executive officer with the 37th Field Artillery in South Korea.

Randi S. Reich, C’95, New York City, left her job as assistant director of the Mayor’s Office of Transportation in the City of New York, to attend Harvard Business School this fall.

Ingrid Austin, EAS’96, and Jamie E. Daniels II, C’95, were married in Orange, N.J., on April 26; they live in Philadelphia.

Heather Berner, C’96, New York City, a graduate of Georgetown School of Foreign Service and MBA progam, has just completed her first year at Columbia Law School and plans to pursue a career in entertainment law. She is engaged to be married to Andrew Sachs (a former investment banker with Morgan Stanley, who works for a Broadway theater merchandising company). They will be married next March and plan to move to Los Angeles after Heather’s graduation.

Amy Greenfield, C’96, writes “Hi! Just wanted to drop a line to announce my engagement to David Treat, C’95. The wedding date is September 26, 1998, in my hometown of Grosse Pointe, Mich., and Dave and I are looking forward to a lot of alums attending. I’m presently working for Ford Motor Company in finance and Dave is finishing up his master’s degree in higher-education administration from the University of Michigan.”

Chad Haller, C’96, and Jessica Putterman, W’97, were married on July 3 and now live in the Bronx, N.Y. Jessica is beginning a job at Coopers & Lybrand this summer and Chad is in his second year at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
