Sally Cohen Connor CW’51, “board member and retired vice president of the University of Pennsylvania Alumni Club of Northeastern Pennsylvania, was recently honored by the Jewish Family Service of Greater Wilkes-Barre,” writes her friend Bill Runner Jr. WEv’64 WEv’66. “Sally is a JFS board member who has served on numerous other local boards and committees and worked with organizations such as the Domestic Violence Service, Interfaith Council, and Ecumenical Enterprises, Inc. She was administrator of Temple Israel in Wilkes-Barre for 25 years until her retirement in 2001. Rabbi Larry Caplan honored her with a most unusual gift, an umbrella. He said that his wife said that ‘Sally Connor is Mary Poppins …. Practically perfect in every way.’ Her family and several hundred friends and associates attended the affair. During her six years as vice president of our alumni club she carried us to new heights, including doing much of the work as we celebrated our 100th anniversary as the oldest Penn alumni club in the world.”

James E. Bogle FA’52, Chiang Mai, Thailand, who is retired, wrote Thai & Southeast Asia Painting, 18th through 20th Centuries,now available through Schiffer Publishing Ltd and Amazon. It is based on his collection of paintings, 50 of which were donated in 2010 to the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. He is working on another book on Buddhist cosmology. He writes that he stays active by swimming 500-1000 meters daily and travelling throughout Southeast Asia.

Dr. Arthur L. Wool D’54 GD’58 writes that he recently retired from active orthodontic practice, having served the Reading, Pa., area for 52 years. He is “still actively managing an orthodontic-supply company and has recently opened several international subsidiaries, including one in Santiago, Chile, and Seoul. [I am] the holder of numerous archwire patents in the orthodontic field and a sizeable number of graduate orthodontic departments use these arches in their clinical instruction and patient care. One of [my] daughters, Suzanne, a respiratory therapist has joined [my] firm, Modern Arch, and is now office manager.” Arthur and his wife, Judith, love sailing and did so in the Caribbean for the month of August.

Maxine Swarttz Schnall Ed’56 emails that her latest book, Paris To Die For, a “glamorous spy novel co-authored under the pen name Maxine Kenneth, was published by Grand Central on July 28, Jackie Kennedy’s birthday. Inspired by an authentic letter in the JFK Library written by 21-year-old Jacqueline Bouvier, stating that she is going to work for the CIA, the book recounts her hair-raising fictitious adventures as a CIA agent in a world of international intrigue in Paris in 1951.” Maxine is running a nationwide Jackie Kennedy Look-alike contest on her website www.maxineSchnall.com.

Steve Stovall W’62 ASC’63 writes, “After a career in advertising and book publishing in New York and New Jersey, and 29 years living in Princeton, I moved with my wife and youngest son to Durango, Colo., where I started a new career in 1996 as a member of the business-school faculty at Ft. Lewis College teaching marketing courses (my major at Wharton). I was outstanding teacher of the year here in 2009. We reinvented ourselves and have become farmers/ranchers, as my wife breeds and raises sheep and runs a natural food (lamb, pork, beef, and rabbit) farmers co-op. I am still teaching and compete in 10 or 12 running races a year as well as two or three sprint triathlons.” In April he received a Centennial Award from his college “for his renowned dedication to the Tri The Rim Triathlon.”

William A. Runner Jr. WEv’64 WEv’66 reports that he recently completed 25 years as a volunteer on the executive committee of the Century Club of Kings College, Wilkes-Barre, Pa., which included a two-year term as president. He also chaired the college’s Farber Golf Tournament committee at least 10 of those years. This follows six years of service as president of the University of Pennsylvania Alumni Club of Northeastern Pennsylvania and a two-year term as president of the Luzerne County Community College Foundation, where he also represented Penn at the inauguration of the college’s president. He is also a board member of Luzerne-Wyoming Counties Area Agency on Aging and Generation to Generation. Bill is still teaching skiing at Jack Frost Mountain in Blakeslee, and in the off season enjoys golfing and traveling with his wife of 53 years, Joanne.

He was awarded a US Fulbright Scholar Award to teach anthropology at Hawassa University in Ethiopia for this academic year, along with his wife, Dr. Marty Nathan, who will teach medicine as a US Fulbright specialist there. In addition, Elliot’s fieldwork memoir, Laibon: An Anthropologist’s Journey with Samburu Diviners in Kenya, will be published by AltaMira press in October. “And icing on the cake,” their eldest daughter, Leah, married on Labor Day last year, while daughter Masaye entered Hunter College and son, Mulugetta, returned to Macalester College.

John Quelch WG’74 was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2011 “for services to the promotion of British business interests and prosperity.” Earlier this year, he concluded a 30-year career at the Harvard Business School as senior associate dean and the Lincoln Filene Professor of Business Administration. For several years he was chair of the Massachusetts Port Authority and chair of the British American Business Council of New England. He is now dean, vice president, and Distinguished Professor of International Management at the China Europe International Business School in Shanghai.
