My family has been making this 100% Koroneiki olive oil for 10 generations. It’s the real thing! My world as an official evoo junkie, which began 20 years ago when I moved to Greece, isn’t a far cry from my life as a Peace Corps volunteer almost 30 years ago. Teaching the Burkina Be how to build dykes in the fields to reduce soil erosion, supporting a small family olive grove in Greece, it’s all good for the planet. In between I’ve led many lives. I raised two children I adore, was a photographer for a year in Paris where I was going to be the next Cartier-Bresson, received a graduate degree from NYU’s Wagner School of Public Service, and worked in the public and not-for-profit sectors on both sides of the pond. I continue to enjoy the ridiculously amazing tastes and health benefits of Greek cuisine, and make a point of swimming in the Aegean any chance I get.”

I obtained a medical degree, became a psychiatrist, worked as a radio talk-show host, a documentary filmmaker, a television personality, and now am an author. Somehow, to my own amazement, I continue to juggle these roles because they work for each other in the common interest of raising awareness about mental-health topics. Along the way I have balanced a life as an openly gay professional in medicine, in the media, and on the playground as the mother of two girls. This is tricky terrain. But one thing I learned at the big diverse school that was Penn is that there is a niche somewhere in which each and every one of us can shine. My latest endeavor is a book based on my work as a trauma psychiatrist.” Back to Life: Getting Past Your Past with Resilience, Strength, and Optimism, was published by William Morrow in January.

After nearly two decades in private industry across North America and Europe, I joined the Swiss Federal Railways in 2009 as chief procurement and supply-chain officer, where I am responsible for supplier management and in-house manufacturing. A significant factor that swayed my decision is that the railway logo and the colors of our trains are identical to Penn’s red and blue—so how could I say no? The combination of the interactive, improvisation-based HIV education and RemoteID has increased rates of testing amongst program participants to 89%, compared to less than 3%, of the regional population at large. Other members of the Penn community have been instrumental in volunteering and supporting Triad’s work here and in Africa. Dr. Gabriel Ledger C’94, Kim Frumin C’97, and Katherine Wald SW’04 have worked with us in the Nkomazi region; Emmy-winner Jonathan Hock C’85 featured Triad and South African Jazz legend Hugh Masekela in Umlando: Through My Father’s Eyes, his 10-part documentary for ESPN’s coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Jillian Balis C’93 featured Triad on her philanthropic-commerce site www.SpendforGood.com.
