I am married, 54 years, to Dr. Aaron Cooper: two children, Meryl and Mitchell, and four grandchildren. At 50, I decided to return to school and earned a master’s in taxation from Pace University in 1983; I have worked as a tax practitioner ever since. Reading, walking, and travel are among my favorite leisure activities, as well as involvement for nearly 50 years with the White Plains League of Women Voters. I continue my travel vicariously as my granddaughter, Tiffany, hops around the world, and I hope to have more opportunities to travel when the knees say it’s time. I keep in touch with a group of sisters from Penn’s chapter of Phi Sigma Sigma who meet as often as possible in the New York area. I also meet every few years with friends from Girls’ High, Class of Jan. 1948.”

Shirley Magitson Grallnick Ed’53 writes that she splits the year between being “a Southern belle” in Boca Raton, Fla., and a “Northern run-around” in Wynnewood, Pa. “Many hours are spent involved with art, senior tennis, bridge, zumba aerobics, making porcelain dolls, and writing poetry.” A retired reading specialist, she volunteered in the Florida public elementary schools for 15 years and helped children prepare for the Florida Comprehensive Achievement Tests. Also, two of her paintings are displayed in the GSE building at Penn. She notes that her “most rewarding project has been creating an annual scholarship fund for eligible GSE students.”

This month, Stu finishes his sixth and final year as an alderman of Lake Forest, Ill. Recognizing the need to increase access to anonymous, confidential HIV testing in rural areas, I developed RemoteID, a new, patent-pending electricity-independent, biometric technology. The combination of the interactive, improvisation-based HIV education and RemoteID has increased rates of testing amongst program participants to 89%, compared to less than 3%, of the regional population at large. The mixed-use proposal for Oxford Lamp Factory, a research initiative with the Community Design Collaborative, was awarded a Merit Award for its innovative adaptation of an abandoned structure and the Pavilion & Children’s Discovery Garden at Sister Cities Park received an Honor Award for its provocative interaction between building and landscape. Construction on the pavilion, in Logan Square, is expected to begin this year.”

After a very difficult pregnancy, he was born completely healthy, weighing 8 lbs. and 15 oz. His older sister, Alisha (nine), and brother, Bryson (five), have been showering him with kisses and helping me take care of him. On Nov. 21, Rob successfully completed the Philadelphia Marathon, raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia at three months pregnant and this was his way of giving back to a wonderful organization. The kids and I were there at the finish line, cheering him on.
