Dr. H. Leon Bradlow Ch’45 and Hattie Gottlieb Bradlow CW’45 are enjoying their recent retirement to Dunedin, Fla., a small Gulf Coast city close to Tampa, where their son Alec Bradlow C’79 runs a successful mattress business with his wife Diana. (“Daughter Janet Bradlow and her husband, Joe Schmitt, remain a lure to New York.”) Leon’s “career in biomedical research yielded some 350 publications and included stints at Memorial Sloan-Kettering and the Rockefeller University.” Although emeritus since last year, he continues to be involved in several cancer-prevention studies.

Elizabeth Peterson McLean CW’51 G’53 has just written her first book, Peter Collinson and the Eighteenth Century Natural History Exchange; co-written, it was published by the American Philosophical Society.

Burton S. Rudman EE’52 writes, “My first published book, God as Man Created Him, was short (80 pages), but penetrating and somewhat controversial; it was published by Publish America. My second book, Biography of the Sacred, is in process with the same publisher.”

Robert Lebengood C’56, a former Penn football player (a Munger Man), who also was on the varsity track team, writes that he finished in 3 hrs. 14 min. in the ING Georgia Half-marathon in March. He and his family have lived in Athens for 28 years, where he retired as general manager of Overhead Door Corp. and is now involved in commercial real estate with Coldwell Banker/Upchurch Realty.

 writes, “Penn ZBTs from the Class of 1956 celebrated a joint 50th birthday party in New Orleans at the opening of the World’s Fair in 1984. This past weekend [early May], we celebrated a joint 75th birthday party at the Jazz Festival. Peter Galvin W’56, Stuart Neye W’56, Barry Lhormer W’56, Jerome Makowsky W’56, Leon Rittenberg W’56, Lester Baum W’56, Dr. Allen Myers C’56, and Joe Pasternack W’54 [were at] this wonderful birthday party (reunion) of a bunch of good buddies whose friendship started at the University.”

 co-wrote Open Spaces Sacred Places (www.openspacessacredplaces.org). It features public green spaces that he and his wife, Kitty, funded through their foundation, the TKF Foundation (www.tkffdn.org), including a meditation garden in a prison, a sculpture garden in an inner city, a grieving garden, and a peace garden in a diverse neighborhood.

Nicholas Taubman W’57, president of Mozart Investments in Roanoke, Va., delivered the May commencement address at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. The recent U.S. Ambassador to Romania, in December he was awarded the Star of Romania, its highest civilian honor, for helping strengthen ties between the two countries.

Dr. James A. Schaller M’58 GM’64 had three books published this year; the latest is Death by Prescription (Infinity Publishing). He writes he began his most recent non-fiction work, Do Yourself a Favor: Love Your Wife, in high school.

Merle Sloss CW’70 is EVP and president of licensing at Geoffrey Beene, LLC, in New York; she writes that it donates all of its net profits to charity. She lives in Stamford, Conn., with her husband, Matt Smith, and has two children, Zach (21) and Alexandra (16).

Frederick Rankin MacFadden Jr. Gr’61, a professor emeritus at Coppin State University in Baltimore, has submitted See What You’ve Drawn: The Demonstrator and the Demonstration, the second installment of his autobiography, to the  Rowan University library in New Jersey. “This zoological treatise, illustrated with drawings of laboratory specimens, chronicles the attraction to scientific knowledge for its own sake.”

Dr. James S. Forrester M’63 GM’67, the George Burns and Gracie Allen professor of cardiovascular research at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles, in March received the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award from the American College of Cardiology. He joined the institute in 1969, and is a former director of its cardiology division.

Theresa Giampietro Nu’64 GNu’65 in April received the Louise T. Bertacchi Founder’s Award from the Cumberland County Women’s Hall of Fame for establishing nursing programs at Vineland High School and Cumberland County College in New Jersey.

Ilene J. Leff CW’64 is a senior adviser to Ashoka Innovators for the Public and president of Jafnel Advisors, Inc., a management-consulting firm. The American Association of University Women of Greater Naples, Fla., recently honored her as a “Woman of Achievement.” She is a member of the board of the Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida and in 2006 co-founded First Book of Collier County, which gives new books to children from low-income families. In New York she serves on the board of the American Jewish Committee. And she is co-gift chair of her Class.

Douglas Kramer C’65 writes, “I retired from my law firm in 2000 and Judith Ahrens CW’66 retired from her management-consultation position with Wawa: we married and joined the Peace Corps. We served in Bulgaria for two years and, a few years later, served another two years in the western Visayas in the Philippines, with, in between, a brief bit of volunteer work on behalf of the International Senior Lawyers Project, with Sutyajnik, a human-rights litigation NGO in Yekaterinburg, Russia. We are now spending a year in Azerbaijan on behalf of the ABA, for its rule-of-law-initiative. I have two children and three grandkids, and, when in the U.S., we live in a converted hunting cabin in the Hudson Valley. Retirement is great!”

Gregory D. Saputelli C’65, the New Jersey managing partner for the law firm of Obermayer, Rebmann, Maxwell & Hippel LLP, was named as a 2009 New Jersey “Super Lawyer” (business litigation) in the April editions of New Jersey Monthly and New Jersey Super Lawyers.

Richard A. Marker C’66 writes, “I have just been elected to a two-year term as chair of IJCIC. This consortium is the official representative body of world Jewry for interreligious relations with international counterparts in other religions (the Vatican, the Greek Orthodox Patriarch, etc.). I also continue to serve as elected co-chair of the Board of World Religious Leaders, representing six of the world religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Sikhism).”

C. Murray Saylor Jr. W’66 WG’67 was named as a “2009 Georgia Super Lawyer” in Atlanta magazine, for his work in estate-planning and probate law. He was also recognized by Georgia Trend in its “2008 Legal Elite: Best Lawyers in Georgia.”

Dr. Arthur M. Shapiro C’66 was promoted in July to Distinguished Professor of Evolution and Ecology at the University of California, Davis, where he has taught for 38 years. He says he can order graduate students to address him as Your Distinguishedness—but his wife “won’t hear of it.”

Dr. Alice J. Zal G’66 Nu’80, Norristown, Pa., was chosen in May as president-elect of the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association. A staff member at Mercy Suburban and Montgomery hospitals, she is a clinical assistant professor of family medicine at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Andrew M. Barnes C’67, a partner with the corporate-services group of the law firm of Quarles & Brady LLP, in March was named “Milwaukee Best Lawyers’ 2009 Banking Lawyer of the Year.”

Lawrence J. Beaser C’67, Bala Cynwyd, Pa., a partner in the law firm of Blank Rome LLP, recently received the 2009 Service Award from the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association. He currently serves as chair of the Philadelphia Foundation.

Ron Bornstein W’67 L’70, ronald.bornstein@pillsburylaw.com, a partner at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, writes that he is marking his 30th year of corporate, financial, and international law practice in San Francisco. He notes that his International Business major and French Literature minor at Penn were preludes to his career. Recognized as a “Super Lawyer” on many occasions, he is involved with various professional, civic, and cultural organizations. He and his former wife, Lisa Rogers CW’70, have two daughters, Amanda and Sabrina, both in graduate programs at the UCLA School of Public Policy.

Dr. Robert I. Rudolph C’67 M’71 GM’75 writes, “In May I was awarded the “Duhring Clinic Attending of the Year” for excellence in teaching by the Department of Dermatology of Penn Medicine. I am a clinical professor of dermatology there, and have been a faculty member since 1975. I have more than 100 items and book chapters published.”

Nelson B. Heller Gr’69 is president of EdNet at MDR, in Solana Beach, Calif., and founding publisher of the Heller Reports. This coming December he will be inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Association of Educational Publishers for his contributions to the industry of supplemental educational materials.

Robert Peiser C’69 writes, “I was recently named chair and CEO of Omniflight Helicopters, Inc., in Addison, Tex. Also, I was married to the former Nancy McCormick. Finally, the number of grandchildren grew from three to five this spring, with a set of twins also coming in June. It has been quite a year. Two of my grandchildren were born to my daughter and her husband, Karyn M. Saxon C’95 and Todd Saxon W’95.

Jonathan Vipond III L’70, a shareholder with the law firm of Buchanan, Ingersoll & Rooney PC, has been appointed a co-head of its office in Harrisburg, Pa. He is a member of the healthcare section and the non-traditional couples and families practice group.

Barbara P. Barnett GEd’71 is head of modern languages at the Agnes Irwin School in Rosemont, Pa. She will receive the 2009 Dorothy S. Ludwig Excellence in Teaching Award (secondary level) from the American Association of Teachers of French, at whose conference this month she will present a session on Women in the Resistance.

Dayton Duncan C’71 is the writer and producer of Ken Burns’ upcoming documentary on PBS, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. He also wrote the companion book, to be released in September by Alfred A. Knopf. In recognition of his contribution to telling the story of the national parks, the National Park Service in April named Duncan an honorary park ranger.

Barbara Landau CW’71 Gr’82 is the Dick & Lydia Todd Professor and chair of cognitive science at the Johns Hopkins University. In April she was named a fellow, for the 2009-10 academic year, by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. During this sabbatical she will work on a new book, Gene, Brain, Mind, and Development: the Puzzle of Williams Syndrome, to be published by Oxford University Press.

Michael Mustokoff L’72, a partner in the trial-practice group in Philadelphia of the law firm of Duane Morris LLP, has been nominated a fellow of the American Bar Foundation, for “his many contributions to its mission to advance justice through research on the law, legal processes, and the law’s impact on society.”

David R. Oberlander C’72, a shareholder in the Cherry Hill office of Flaster/Greenberg, Attorneys, was included in the Meet the Real Estate Lawyers List, published in May by Real Estate New Jersey magazine. He specializes in real estate law.

Karen Gantz Zahler CW’72 is the lawyer and literary agent for Mean Mothers, the new book by Peg Streep CW’70. It “highlights the success of mothers who have overcome their fears and statistical inclination to parent in the fashion of their mean mothers, to find that they are not only good mothers, but that motherhood can be a deeply satisfying experience.” Two of Peg’s previous books are the memoir, Necessary Journeys: Letting Ourselves Learn from Life, and Adolescence (2002), which was serialized in Good Housekeeping.

Alan Berson W’75 WG’78 writes that after a career in corporate positions, he became an executive coach in 2002. He is “now also a professor at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, teaching master’s level courses on leadership.” He writes, “Rededicating myself to be a learner and to evoke the same in others has been tremendously rewarding. Additionally, getting leaders to see that a focus on the ‘people’ aspect of business produces enhanced financial and strategic results [and] creates a true win-win scenario.”

Diane McKinney-Whetstone CW’75 is a lecturer with the Center for Programs in Contemporary Writing at Penn. This month she is to receive the 2009 Fiction Award from the American Library Association for her fifth novel, Trading Dreams at Midnight.

Emily Chalef Sanders CW’75, founder and CEO of Sanders Financial Management, based in Norcross, Ga., has been named one of the “Top 50 Women in Wealth Management” in the U.S. by Wealth Managermagazine.

Majid Naini Gr’85 translated poetry by the Persian poet Rumi that was set alongside the poetry of an Iraq War veteran in the musical piece The Garden of Paradise; it was performed in March at UC-Berkeley, Santa Clara University, and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Joy Sturm C’89 and her husband, Kenneth Drexler, are delighted to announce the birth of their third child, Jack, on Oct. 8. He was warmly welcomed by big sister Mia (seven) and big brother Adam (five). They live in Potomac, Md.

Dr. Kristine Yaffe M’89 GM’90 is a professor in the psychiatry, neurology, and epidemiology departments and associate chair of psychiatry research at the University of California, San Francisco. The Alzheimer’s Association awarded her a three-year grant for research on mild cognitive impairment and dementia among very old women.

Sumru Belger Krody G’91 has been promoted to curator in (and continues as head of) the Eastern-hemisphere collections at the Textile Museum in Washington. With the museum for 15 years, she has been managing editor of its Journal since 1997.

Ted Nash G’91 WG’91 has just published a book on family travels, Honeymoon in Greece and Other Misadventures, which “documents 10 years of excursions, fraught with challenge and accidents, that offer a humorous escape” at [his] expense and his wife’s and children’s.

Dr. Rachel B. Wohlberg C’91 married Curt S. Friedberg WEv’93 on Nov. 15. She has taken a position at Children’s Health Care of Atlanta at the Scottish Rite Hospital, having served on the medical staff of the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington. A consultant, he is a partner in the Atlanta firm of Grisanti, Galef and Goldress. She is the daughter of Rabbi Jeffrey A. Wohlberg C’62 and Judith R. Frank Wohlberg CW’63, and the sister of Rabbi Adam M. Wohlberg C’88.

Rob Bernstine GEx’93 is head of Intuition Design, Inc., in Chesapeake City, Md. He writes that it was named supplier for a medical-laboratory instrument that it helped create and which won the 2009 Medical Design Excellence Award.

Eric Blank W’93 writes, “I am a practicing attorney (www.ericblank.com) and illustrated-book author (www.RobertFitzgibbons.com) in Las Vegas. Recently I was nominated for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Man & Woman of the Year campaign (snv.llsevent.org/ericb). I am alerting my fellow alumni about what I am doing and hope to enlist their support for this great cause: I am sure there are a number of them who have been affected or have family members affected. I am raising money [for] a Las Vegas patient, Jenny Scobie (diagnosed at 10 months with adult leukemia and given a 50% chance of survival), as well as for my father, Barry Blank, who is a lymphoma survivor. Now in remission, Jenny must still visit the doctor and have blood work done regularly, but mostly she spends her time being a happy, healthy six-year-old kindergarten student. I truly hope to make blood cancers a thing of the past.”

Jamie Gleich Bryant G’96 is in the second year of publishing Kiki, her “tween design magazine,” which has already won eight national awards, including being named 2009 Magazine of the Year by Mom’s Choice. She “tailors the college fashion-design curriculum to tweens and gives them the opportunity to explore. Our goal is to inspire girls to engage with the world around them and become creators, rather than just viewers.”

Kristine D’Elisa GAr’96 GFA’96, principal at R. S. Granoff Architects P.C. in Greenwich, Conn., in May achieved the LEED AP Homes accreditation of the U.S. Green Building Council. She writes she is also actively involved in sustainable design education in Fairfield and Westchester counties.

Dr. Wendell E. Pritchett Gr’97 is the new chancellor of the State University of New Jersey, Rutgers–Camden. He was a professor at Penn Law; his most recent book is Robert Clifton Weaver and the American City: The Life and Times of an Urban Reformer (University of Chicago Press, 2008). His wife, Anne Kringel, is a senior lecturer and director of legal writing at Penn Law: they have two children, Eleanor (12) and Clara (eight).

David B. Horvath G’98 writes, “In April my wife, Mary E. Geno Horvath, and I received the Youth Aid Panel Panelist of the Year award from the Center For Resolutions in Media, Pa. Earlier this year, I finally received my FAA Private Pilot license (airplane, single engine, land-based). I finally got around to taking [and passing] the FCC amateur-radio (ham) exams. Although I have not written any new ones recently, my computer/technical books still sell at a reasonable rate. We recently celebrated our 20th-wedding anniversary with a trip to Egypt, with stops in England and Wales on the way home.”

Andrew M. Schwartz EAS’03 W’03 is excited to announce his engagement to Lauren Polakoff. He is a senior associate at Liberty Partners, a private-equity firm in New York. She received her master’s in social work from Columbia University in May. We plan to marry in June 2010 in her hometown of Princeton, N.J.

Greg Tamborino GAr’03 was promoted to associate at Perkins+Will Architects in Chicago. Since 2005 he has been project architect for a high-rise condominium in the city’s West Loop.

Grant Ginder C’05 writes that in June Simon & Schuster released his debut novel: This is How it Starts, “a coming-of-age tale that follows one Penn graduate as he attempts to endear himself to Washington’s political and social elite.” He is working on his second novel, and will attend New York University’s creative-writing program in the fall.

Dr. Jeffrey Burdick V’07 works for GlaxoSmithKline in King of Prussia, Pa., and owns a small livestock veterinary practice in the nearby counties. He was also named “Veterinarian of the Year 2008” by the Delaware County SPCA: as a volunteer clinician, he provides services pro bono to a local animal shelter.

Dr. Jennifer Muller V’07, mullervmd@gmail.com, last November launched Mobile Veterinary Services, in Philadelphia. She continues to work on governmental-policy issues by serving on the Pennsylvania Dog Law Advisory Board and as chair of the Canine Health Board. Her husband, Todd Bernstein, is president of Global Citizen. They share their home with many cats, dogs, and a cockatoo.

Berel Rapoport CGS’07 and his wife, Dayana, proudly welcomed the birth of their first child, Moshe Michael, on Jan 8. “Based in Philadelphia, but constantly traveling throughout the Northeast and mid-Atlantic,” Berel “serves as a haberdasher for Astor & Black Custom Clothiers. Muschino, as we call him, already has his eye on some of the finest fabrics for his new wardrobe.”
