Leon Bradlow Ch’45 and Hattie Gottlieb Bradlow CW’45 are enjoying their recent retirement to Dunedin, Fla., a small Gulf Coast city close to Tampa, where their son Alec Bradlow C’79 runs a successful mattress business with his wife Diana. (“Daughter Janet Bradlow and her husband, Joe Schmitt, remain a lure to New York.”) Leon’s “career in biomedical research yielded some 350 publications and included stints at Memorial Sloan-Kettering and the Rockefeller University.” Although emeritus since last year, he continues to be involved in several cancer-prevention studies.

Robert Lebengood C’56, a former Penn football player (a Munger Man), who also was on the varsity track team, writes that he finished in 3 hrs. 14 min. in the ING Georgia Half-marathon in March. He and his family have lived in Athens for 28 years, where he retired as general manager of Overhead Door Corp. and is now involved in commercial real estate with Coldwell Banker/Upchurch Realty.

This past weekend [early May], we celebrated a joint 75th birthday party at the Jazz Festival. Thomas H. Stoner W’56 co-wrote Open Spaces Sacred Places (www.openspacessacredplaces.org). It features public green spaces that he and his wife, Kitty, funded through their foundation, the TKF Foundation (www.tkffdn.org), including a meditation garden in a prison, a sculpture garden in an inner city, a grieving garden, and a peace garden in a diverse neighborhood.

Nicholas Taubman W’57, president of Mozart Investments in Roanoke, Va., delivered the May commencement address at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. The recent U.S. Ambassador to Romania, in December he was awarded the Star of Romania, its highest civilian honor, for helping strengthen ties between the two countries.

Frederick Rankin MacFadden Jr. Gr’61, a professor emeritus at Coppin State University in Baltimore, has submitted See What You’ve Drawn: The Demonstrator and the Demonstration, the second installment of his autobiography, to the Rowan University library in New Jersey. “This zoological treatise, illustrated with drawings of laboratory specimens, chronicles the attraction to scientific knowledge for its own sake.”

Forrester M’63 GM’67, the George Burns and Gracie Allen professor of cardiovascular research at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles, in March received the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award from the American College of Cardiology. He joined the institute in 1969, and is a former director of its cardiology division.

Ilene J. Leff CW’64 is a senior adviser to Ashoka Innovators for the Public and president of Jafnel Advisors, Inc., a management-consulting firm. The American Association of University Women of Greater Naples, Fla., recently honored her as a “Woman of Achievement.” She is a member of the board of the Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida and in 2006 co-founded First Book of Collier County, which gives new books to children from low-income families. In New York she serves on the board of the American Jewish Committee. And she is co-gift chair of her Class.

Douglas Kramer C’65 writes, “I retired from my law firm in 2000 and Judith Ahrens CW’66 retired from her management-consultation position with Wawa: we married and joined the Peace Corps. We served in Bulgaria for two years and, a few years later, served another two years in the western Visayas in the Philippines, with, in between, a brief bit of volunteer work on behalf of the International Senior Lawyers Project, with Sutyajnik, a human-rights litigation NGO in Yekaterinburg, Russia. We are now spending a year in Azerbaijan on behalf of the ABA, for its rule-of-law-initiative. I have two children and three grandkids, and, when in the U.S., we live in a converted hunting cabin in the Hudson Valley. Retirement is great!”

C. Murray Saylor Jr. W’66 WG’67 was named as a “2009 Georgia Super Lawyer” in Atlanta magazine, for his work in estate-planning and probate law. He was also recognized by Georgia Trend in its “2008 Legal Elite: Best Lawyers in Georgia.”
Dr. Arthur M. Shapiro C’66 was promoted in July to Distinguished Professor of Evolution and Ecology at the University of California, Davis, where he has taught for 38 years. He says he can order graduate students to address him as Your Distinguishedness—but his wife “won’t hear of it.”
Dr. Alice J. Zal G’66 Nu’80, Norristown, Pa., was chosen in May as president-elect of the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association. A staff member at Mercy Suburban and Montgomery hospitals, she is a clinical assistant professor of family medicine at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dayton Duncan C’71 is the writer and producer of Ken Burns’ upcoming documentary on PBS, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. He also wrote the companion book, to be released in September by Alfred A. Knopf. In recognition of his contribution to telling the story of the national parks, the National Park Service in April named Duncan an honorary park ranger.
Barbara Landau CW’71 Gr’82 is the Dick & Lydia Todd Professor and chair of cognitive science at the Johns Hopkins University. In April she was named a fellow, for the 2009-10 academic year, by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. During this sabbatical she will work on a new book, Gene, Brain, Mind, and Development: the Puzzle of Williams Syndrome, to be published by Oxford University Press.

I am raising money [for] a Las Vegas patient, Jenny Scobie (diagnosed at 10 months with adult leukemia and given a 50% chance of survival), as well as for my father, Barry Blank, who is a lymphoma survivor. Now in remission, Jenny must still visit the doctor and have blood work done regularly, but mostly she spends her time being a happy, healthy six-year-old kindergarten student. I truly hope to make blood cancers a thing of the past.”
