37   Hon. Bentley Kassal C’37 was awarded the Légion d’honneur in June last year; the ceremony, in Normandy, honored 35 Americans for their service in the Second World War and was attended by President Obama. At 93, Bentley still serves as legal counsel for the firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in New York.

46   Ted Nace C’46 writes that he received the Micah 6 Award from the peace and justice committee of the First Congregational Church—United Church of Christ in Colorado Springs for his years of advocacy for justice for Palestinians. His daughter, Martha Johnson, on confirmation by the US Senate, became the first woman administrator of the General Services Administration, the acquisition and property management arm of the federal government, with 12,000 employees, a multi-billion dollar budget, and a presidential mandate to go 100% green. His son wrote a new book, Climate Hope: On the Front Lines of the Fight against Coal.

47   Dr. Slater Newman W’47, Raleigh, N.C., emeritus professor of psychology at North Carolina State University, in May received a 2010 Peacemaker Award from the North Carolina Peace Action group. 

48   Robert Stovall W’48 in February made his 41st appearance, a presentation on financial forecasting, before the Ivy League Club in Sarasota, Fla. 


1950s

50 Frederick Selby W’50 published a book, Postcards From Kathmandu, which describes his many journeys to Nepal including his three years as adviser to that country’s finance ministry; it includes 35 pages of photos, taken on climbs and treks in the Himalayas. After a lifetime as an investment banker, he also has traveled into the mountains of Bhutan, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, Africa, the Alps, as well as the US and Canadian Rocky Mountains. He lives in New York and is the father of two daughters and a son (who is in charge of Merrill Lynch Wealth Management in Australia); there are four grandchildren. He is currently working on a book in which he writes “about the highs and lows of life.” 

55 Anita Kushner CW’55 writes that she has returned from Israel, after 34 years there, and is “living, painting, and teaching at the Westbeth Artist House in New York.”

57 Carl Moskowitz EE’57 writes, “In May, the St. Louis Jewish Lightnewspaper named me and 14 others ‘Unsung Heroes’ for our volunteer work. Since my retirement in 2000, I have worked as a volunteer for FEMA (assisting in its hurricane-recovery efforts in 2003, 2005, and 2008), the local Red Cross chapter, a local school district, and my city’s police department.” 

59 Heshie Josephs ME’59 and Bette Shear Josephs Ed’60celebrated the bar mitzvah of their grandson, Yehudah Leib, in Israel, earlier this year. They write, as “the fourth child of their fourth child, [he] is affectionately known as 4-4.”

60   Frank N. Fleischer W’60 is an attorney in the Tampa, Fla., office of GrayRobinson, P.A., who specializes in bonds and government finance. Earlier this year he was recognized as a “Florida Super Lawyer” for 2010.

Nauman Jr. L’61, senior partner at the law firm of Nauman, Smith, Shissler & Hall, LLP, in Harrisburg, Pa., was designated a “Living Legacy” by the Harrisburg SusqueCentennial Commission, as part of the city’s 150th-anniversary celebrations. He is known for his legal work with community foundations.

Dr. Wesley B. Truitt C’61,[email protected], is an adjunct professor of public policy at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif. He recently just published his fourth book, Power & Policy: Lessons for Leaders in Government and Business (Praeger Publishers). 

62  Richard A. Camp C’62, [email protected], in May received a doctor of ministry degree from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Ill. His major project was “A Pastoral Handbook for Caring for People in Grief and Loss,” and he is looking to publication. Dick, retired after 35 years with Send International, an evangelical missionary organization, and his wife, Esther, live in Laceyville, Pa.

64  James L. Marshall G’64 wrote In Search of Poetry, a book of poems, which was published in May by Xlibris. “The title is a metaphor for the gradual emergence of my devotion to the expressive arts, paralleling a career in engineering; a midpoint was my master’s in music at Penn.” 

65 Natvar Bhavsar GFA’65 was profiled in Kee magazine in May, after a show in Hong Kong earlier this year.

Margot Marx Einstein CW’65 writes, “My husband, Mort, and I have settled into our new home in Scottsdale, Ariz. Our 10-year-old Pekingese, Snickers, and our two-year-old new AKC Champion Bedlington Terrier, Lambchop, are enjoying the big backyard and pool. I am teaching water aerobics at LA Fitness and still swimming a mile a day. I recently participated in the Grand Canyon State Summer Olympic Games and brought home four medals in the four entered events: I won gold in the 200m backstroke, silver in the 50m backstroke, bronze in the 100m backstroke, and bronze in the 50m free-style. 67   Arthur L. Pressman C’67, of the law firm of Nixon Peabody LLP, was recognized in the 2010 edition of Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. Specializing in franchising, he is based in its Boston office. 

68  Dr. Robert Rovinsky C’68 is director of IT enterprise services at the FAA. He recently received the Gary Christle Leadership Award for “advancing the best practice of earned value management in government” from the Project Management Institute. Bob lives in Washington with his wife, Dr. Renana Brooks, a clinical psychologist, and their two teenage daughters, the oldest of whom has matriculated at the George School outside Philadelphia.

69   Dr. Richard W. Cohen C’69 is a practicing psychiatrist in Philadelphia. He writes that last year he was “ranked one in the Middle States and USTA in 30-and-over singles and doubles, 40-and-over singles and doubles, and 50-and-over doubles, father and son and father and daughter.” He “also won the National Fathers and Daughters Championship, with daughter Julia, for the third straight year.”

70  Dr. Arnold R. Eiser C’70 is vice president of medical education for the Mercy Health System and associate dean at Drexel University College of Medicine; he is also an associate fellow of Penn’s Center for Bioethics. In March he received the 2010 Courage to Lead Award from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education “for exemplary leadership of residency training programs.”

72   Dr. Joseph R. Greenberg D’72 GD’76 is a clinical professor of periodontics at Penn Dental and a clinical professor of restorative dentistry at Temple University. In June he moderated and presented a lecture at Temple’s first “Kornberg School of Dentistry Smile Symposium.” Dr. Marc B. Ackerman D’98 (Jacksonville, Fla.) also participated.

Joseph Turow C’72 ASC’73 Gr’76,
 the Robert Lewis Shayon Professor of Communication at Penn, in June received a Distinguished Scholar Award from the National Communication Association for “a lifetime of scholarly achievement in the study of human communication.” It was noted, “As a public intellectual, Prof. Turow is among a handful of scholars to whom The New York Times regularly turns for informed commentary on media systems.”

 a managing partner of the Philadelphia union-side labor law firm Willig, Williams & Davidson, in May was named a “2010 Woman of Distinction” by The Legal Intelligencer. She also is president of the French International School of Philadelphia. 

73   Dr. Larissa M. L. Zaleska Onyshkevych Gr’73 last year had a book published in Ukrainian (Text and Performance: on Modern Ukrainian Drama) and she co-edited Contemporary Ukraine on the Cultural Map of Europe.

74    Kim Johnson Gross CW’74, www.kimjohnsongross.com, wrote What to Wear for the Rest of Your Life, her most recent book, which was published in May. In July she spoke at the Penn Club in New York and is the keynote speaker at the fall conference of the Trustees’ Council of Penn Women at Penn on Oct. 28.

75   Art Gertel C’75 is vice president for strategic regulatory consulting and medical writing at Beardsworth Consulting Group, Inc., in Flemington, N.J. Last year he received the Harold Swanberg Distinguished Service Award from the American Medical Writers Association.

Daniel W. Sklar C’75, of the law firm of Nixon Peabody LLP, was recognized as a top lawyer in the 2010 edition of Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. Specializing in corporate and commercial bankruptcy, he is based in its New Hampshire office.

Lawrence J. Tabas C’75 G’75 is chair of the healthcare-practice group, chair of the election-law-practice group, and a senior partner in the business and financial-reorganization departments of the Philadelphia law firm of Obermayer, Rebmann, Maxwell & Hippel LLP. In June he was named by Pennsylvania Super Lawyers magazine as one of the top attorneys in the state for 2010; he received this distinction in six of the last seven years. 76  Barry Hartman C’76 is a partner at the law firm of K&L Gates LLP in Washington, who specializes in environmental litigation and counseling. Recently he provided testimony to the U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee on proposed changes to the Oil Pollution Act in light of the BP Gulf oil spill. He led the prosecution for the Justice Department in the Exxon Valdez oil spill, and represented the lobster industry in the 1996 North Cape spill off of Rhode Island and the pilot in the Cosco Busan oil spill in San Francisco Bay in 2008.

Rabbi Goldie Milgram CW’76 writes, “A few hours after adding a condo in beautiful Sarasota, Fla., to our lives, the local Reconstructionist synagogue inquired about rabbinic services, so I will be rabbi-in-residence for Kol HaNeshama, from mid-December to mid-April. [I am] serving as September rabbi-in-residence for the Jewish renewal community in Portland, Ore., then heading to Wisconsin to offer a few retreats, after [teaching] public speaking for the Won Korean Reform Buddhist Seminary, to be followed by two webcam semesters teaching pastoral counseling for the Aleph ordination programs. Also working as “Living Judaism” editor for the Philadelphia Jewish Voice. [My] two sons and beloved hubbatzin [are] doing well: seven step-grandchildren keeping me amazed.”

Dr. Keith L. Wapner C’76 GM’85 is a clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at Penn and director of the orthopedic foot and ankle surgery fellowship program. He has been elected president of the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society. 

77  Neal J. McNamara C’77, of the law firm of Nixon Peabody LLP, was recognized as a top lawyer in the 2010 edition of Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. Specializing in labor and employment law, he is based in its Rhode Island office.

Lesley Mallow Wendell C’77, president of Rosewood Consulting Group, which she started in 2001, has been named Philadelphia chapter chair for the Women Presidents’ Organization, an “organization for women with growth-oriented multi-million dollar businesses.” She also serves on the board of the Forum of Executive Women, and the advisory boards of the Career Wardrobe and Professional Women’s Roundtable. She lives in Media, Pa., with her husband, Gary Wendell C’77.

78    Dr. Timothy J. Johnson SW’78 has retired after 30 years in social-work education. For the last 15 years, he was senior professor of social work at Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, N.Y., a program he helped to create; he continues to teach as an adjunct professor at two area colleges. He continues as program director of Johnson Master Consulting, which provides staff training for human-service agencies.

Wendi L. Kotzen C’78, the partner in charge of the real-estate-tax practice of Ballard Spahr LLP, has been elected to the American College of Tax Counsel. Last year she was appointed by Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter W’79 to the Mayor’s Task Force on Tax Policy and Economic Competitiveness. 

79    Karla Brockie OT’79, Tucson, Ariz., recently received a master’s in divinity from Meadville Lombard Theological School, a Unitarian Universalist seminary in Chicago.

Rabbi Shoshana Hantman C’79 writes, “I am so proud that my dear husband, Richard Weill C’76, has been made partner in the law firm of Boies, Schiller, & Flexner, after spending 26 years in the Westchester County DA’s office, the last year as chief assistant. I continue my career in Jewish education, and am active in the havurah movement. Rich and I are the parents of Mollie Hantman-Weill (14) and Isaac Hantman-Weill (12), both of whom were born with fully formed senses of humor.”

Michael Scullin C’79 is counsel to the Philadelphia law firm of McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney & Carpenter, LLP. In June he was made a fellow of the Institute for Corean-American Studies, Inc. He is an adjunct professor at Temple University’s business school, where he teaches international law and cyberlaw.

Nancy J. Knauer C’81 L’84,
 professor of law at Temple University, received both the Dukeminier Award and the Stu Walter Prize from the Williams Institute for her article “LGBT Elderlaw: Toward Equity in Aging,” which was published last year in the Harvard Journal of Gender and Law.Her forthcoming book, Gay and Lesbian Elders: Navigating History, Law, and Identity Politics (Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.) focuses on the unique challenges facing gay and lesbian elders.
Dr. Kenneth Maiese C’81 has been appointed professor and chair of neurology and neurosciences at the UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School in Newark. Previously he was chief of cellular and molecular cerebral ischemia at Wayne State University in Detroit.

Christopher Maurer Gr’82, Boston, professor of Spanish and chair of Romance studies at Boston University, co-wrote Dreaming in Clay on the Coast of Mississippi: Love and Art at Shearwater, which was published by the University Press of Mississippi. He also wrote Fortune’s Favorite Child: The Uneasy Life of Walter Anderson (2003), about one of the family that set up the artists’ colony near Biloxi. 

83   Matthew Arbit C’83 G’83 reports, with great gratitude, receiving a successful kidney transplant in December. He regrets only “that this put the kaibosh on a reunion of some Speakman Spud dorm-mates, planned for approximately the same time.” Matt also sends his “tremendous appreciation to Gary Hahn W’83 for the repeated schlepping between Washington and Baltimore. Barry Smith Gr’83 writes that last spring “I retired from my position as the Dr. Herman B. Baehr Endowed Chair of Finance at Emporia State University (Kansas), after a 30-year career as a university professor. On the day I retired, I received some amazing news. A novel I published last fall, Only Milo, won the 2010 Gold Medal for Popular Fiction from the association of independent publishers and university presses.”

85 Kirk H. Edelman WG’85 in May was appointed president and CEO of Siemens Financial Services, Inc., in Iselin, N.J.; he had joined the firm in 2007 as head of its energy-finance business.

As is fitting for a Penn German language and literature grad (with an MA in European studies and international economics from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies), [I have] focused on Europe for [my] entire 11-year career at the U.S. State Department. Last year, [I] was promoted to unit chief in the Office of Central Europe, where [I am] responsible for bilateral diplomatic relations with Austria, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland.”

03  Tamara Weiss C’03 married Brian Levine on May 30 in Babylon, Long Island. They met at a mutual friend’s karaoke party, and one song led to marriage 19 months later. At their reception, he serenaded her with the same song he sang on the day they met. 09 Anne-Cara Apple C’09 married Matthew Aquiline C’08 on May 8 in Philadelphia’s historic Tenth Presbyterian Church. Bridesmaids were Amy Bachman SW’09, Sarah Stewart C’09, and Danya Kelberg C’02, and James Yoakum W’07, Scott Watkin EAS’07, Mark Green C’06 W’06, and Zachary Smith Ferris Nu’09 were groomsmen. Other alumni attended, especially friends from the Penn Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, where Matt and Anne-Cara first met. They live in Philadelphia: he works as a legal analyst for the Social Security Administration and she works for the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Alex Seyferth C’09 is finishing his master’s at Northwestern University, where he “took advantage of a fifth year of eligibility on the baseball field.” He “helped lead the Wildcats to a third-place finish in the Big Ten, while also receiving academic all league honors.” He also received the Gordon Rothrock leadership award for the team. Majoring in integrated marketing communications, he will graduate in December.
