Tony Franco W’49 writes that he “again represented the U.S. in the Gardnar Mulloy Cup matches (for 80 and over tennis players) in Turkey. The U.S., which won in 2007, came in second to Australia. [I] qualified for the four-man team for the fourth consecutive year by reaching the finals of the U.S. grass-court championship and winning the doubles in both the national grass- and clay-court championships for the third straight year. In the World Individual Championships [I] reached the singles final (losing to a new U.S. 80-year-old) and won [in] the doubles.”

Henry A Garris W’54, Great Neck, N.Y., is a full-time faculty member of Touro College in New York, where he has taught accounting and tax courses for the last six years. A CPA, he was co-chair of a tax conference last July, “Strategic Planning for your High Net-Worth Individuals,” and co-chair of “Tax Planning for Individuals,” a tax conference sponsored by the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants in August. He is married to Barbara, and they have four children.

Dr. Eugene N. Myers W’54, the Emeritus Chair and Distinguished Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh, was an invited participant in the Sixth Balkan Congress of Otolaryngology in Head and Neck Surgery in October. He participated in a panel on education and postgraduate certification in the European Union, Turkey, and the U.S. He also spoke on “The Contemporary Management of Cancer of the Parotid Gland” at the 40th Jubilee Congress of the Hungarian Society of Otorhinolaryngology, Head, and Neck Surgery.

Sally Wendkos Olds CW’56 reports that her 11th book, Super Granny: Great Stuff to Do with Your Grandkids, will be published this March by Sterling Publishing. Sanford R. Simon W’56 writes that he has had a first novel published; 30 years ago he wrote a business book Managing Marketing Profitability. “The new book is Chance Encounter, a post-Holocaust novel … An assimilated American Jew, finding letters that had been returned from Poland over 60 years ago, seeks to find what happened to his grandmother’s family. Coincidently a retired German banker traces the wartime footsteps of his father, from his conscription in 1938 until loss of contact in early 1945, while serving on the Eastern Front. When the two meet each has a profound change in attitude from the start of their journey.”

Dr. Henry Greenberg C’61 writes, “An anticipated trajectory toward some sort of backing off or retirement has been interrupted by my accepting two new assignments. I am now editor-in-chief of Progress in Cardiovascular Diseases. This is both more engaging and more demanding than I had anticipated. I am also the new chair of the human rights of scientists committee at the New York Academy of Sciences. Dotage will just have to wait.”

Barry B. Levine C’61 writes that when his life history of the picaro Benjy Lopez was praised in Newsweek (Feb. 25, 2008), it “helped revive the 1980 story about the Puerto Rican immigrant to New York. As a result, Markus Wiener Publishers has recently brought out a new edition, under the title, Reflections on a Puerto Rican Life. An engaging autobiographical account, it … took issue with the myth of the victimized immigrant and proposed … an actor’s agency even under the most difficult circumstances.” The prologue for the new book claims it is “nothing short of a ‘genial masterpiece’ (see www.BenjyLopez.com).” Barry adds that he “is now completing another life history, ‘The Impermanence of Industry, Lessons Learned from the Last Great Garment Maker,’ about an itinerant pants-maker who has had factories throughout the globe.” He notes, “I am also happy that my son Harris M. Levine C’07 was recently awarded a master’s in political theory by the London School of Economics.”

Frederick Rankin MacFadden Jr. Gr’61, professor emeritus at Coppin State University in Baltimore, writes that he “has written ‘Lingering Life at 29 West Street, Glassboro, New Jersey,’ an appreciation of the ‘Walnut House,’ the Victorian home of Eben Whitney, a member of one of the major glassmaking families in southern New Jersey.” By request, the paper has been submitted to the Rowan University library and circulated through the greater Glassboro group for historic preservation.

Frank Pinkus WG’61 writes that he received a special letter of commendation for his six years of work as the Western regional director for undergraduate admissions for the University; it was presented by Peter V. Shoemaker C’86 on Nov. 20 at a private screening of the new James Bond film at Sony Studios in Los Angeles. During Frank’s six years the number of applications from the region more than tripled and the number of students attending Penn doubled.

Dan Rottenberg C’64 wrote Death of a Gunfighter: The Quest For Jack Slade, the West’s Most Elusive Legend, which was published in October by Westolme Publishing. A work of Western history that he began even as a Penn undergrad, he says his research method was heavily influenced by his American civilization major at Penn.

Dr. Ronald J. Schindler C’64 Gr’78 has developed a website, www.Rschindler.com, to highlight what he believes to be the great thinkers who most formed his outlook on life. “It is a work still in progress. There will be further additions over time.” An adjunct professor, he teaches philosophy at Arcadia University in Glenside, Pa.

Natvar Bhavsar GFA’65 will have recent paintings exhibited at the Sundaram Tagore Gallery in Hong Kong from March 26; they had previously been shown over the winter at same-named galleries in New York and Beverly Hills, Calif. His painting “Delwara 1982” will be exhibited in The Third Mind: American Artists Contemplate Asia, 1860 to 1989 at the Guggenheim Museum until April 19. A book of his artwork, with some texts by Irving Sandler G’49, has also been published.

She writes, “We were sad to miss his 40th law-school reunion, but planned our own mini-reunion in Phoenix this past spring, with law-school friends Marilyn Halperin Bender CW’67 and David Bender L’68, Barbara and Frank Derwin L’68, Chris and Joe Sandulli L’69, Barbara and Howard Seaver L’69, and Susan Goldman Sendrow CW’68 GEd’69 and Mark Sendrow L’69. In July, many alumni joined us in Cleveland for our daughter’s wedding (see Elizabeth Franklin C’99 and Jacob Glaser C’96), and in September, we celebrated Earl’s retirement as senior vice president and corporate secretary of Eaton Corporation. For our 40th-wedding anniversary in October, we took advantage of our new-found ‘retiree lifestyle’ and went on an extended cruise in the Mediterranean. We’re looking forward to more trips and would love to have Penn friends and former classmates join us on our travels or visit us in Cleveland.”

Dr. Frederick M. Herrmann C’69 is retiring as executive director of the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission after a quarter of a century. Last year NJBIZ magazine named him “one of the 10 people who forever altered the political landscape in New Jersey over the past 20 years.” And the Council on Governmental Ethics Laws presented him with its honorary-membership award for many years of distinguished service.

Dr. Arnold R. Eiser C’70 is vice president of medical education for the Mercy Health System of Southeastern Pennsylvania and associate dean and professor of medicine at Drexel University’s medical school. He recently received the Laureate Award for lifetime achievement in medical practice, research, and education from the Pennsylvania chapter of the American College of Physicians; he serves as vice-chair of its health and public-policy committee. He is also a fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. He and his wife, Barbara, who is president of Leading Impact, live in Bryn Mawr. They have co-written several articles on medical management. Their daughter, Arielle V. Eiser C’08,“graduated magna cum laude (like her father) and is working in Washington at Hogan and Hartson as a paralegal.”

Charles Gershon C’70 has published his second novel, Slow Funeral, a “medical thriller.” He did a book-signing at the Penn Bookstore in December. He lives in Asheville, N.C.; his son is Alex Gershon C’11.

Nicholas Canny Gr’71, academic director of the Moore Institute for Research in the Humanities and Social Studies at the National University of Ireland, in Galway, was elected last March to serve for three years as president of the Royal Irish Academy. “This, the leading learned society in Ireland in the sciences and the humanities, was established in 1785.”

Dr. Tom Kalman C’71 is pleased to report that his review article of problematic aspects of Internet-pornography usage was published as the lead paper in the December issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry; a condensed version of the paper was presented at the annual meeting of the APA last May. Tom also reports that his twins, Peter and Victoria, are thriving at Cornell University and Williams College, respectively.

Claire Marcus CW’74 FA’76 GFA’78 is an artist-in education for the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. She conducted residencies in 2008 for the Allentown Art and Everhart museums, the Philadelphia Arts in Education Partnership, and United Way. Her students “include at-risk and adjudicated youth who have created exhibits and installations for their communities.” Her work has been exhibited recently at the Ambre’ Gallery in Bethlehem and Marywood University in Scranton, Pa., and the Textile Center in Minneapolis.

Jon Hinck C’76, Portland, Maine, was elected to a second term in the Maine House of Representatives, representing part of Portland; he was also appointed to serve as house chair of the Joint Committee on Utilities and Energy. He is also a class-action litigator in private practice.

Dr. Michael P. Malloy L’76 gave a series of lectures in early December on “Contemporary Challenges in Transnational Business Transactions” at the new Edmundsburg headquarters of the European law division of the University of Salzburg law faculty.

Dr. Stephen C. Rubin M’76 GM’80 GM’82 is the Franklin Payne Professor and chief of gynecologic oncology at Penn. He writes that he has concluded eight years of service, including a term as chair, on the grant-review panel of the U.S. Department of Defense’s ovarian cancer-research program. “During this time the panel awarded approximately $70 million in research funding to support innovative research into the diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer.”

Regina Sokaler Wolgel SAMP’77 has enhanced her occupational-therapy practice by becoming a certified qigong instructor. In addition to integrating this self-healing art into her patient treatments, she teaches fitness classes and private clients in the “well population,” and widely lectures on the health benefits of qigong. She will pursue personal interests while in Britain, now that she has retired from engineering. Deborah Wong C’82 writes that during the summer she conducted two weeks of pilot research in Thailand, supported by a grant from the University of California. She focused on four provinces near the Laotian and Cambodian borders, studying ways that “music is embedded in the cultural politics of this border region.” Also last summer, she taught a graduate seminar at the University of Guelph in Canada on improvisation and interculturalism, and gave a keynote presentation at the Guelph Jazz Festival. In January she gave a keynote presentation for the National Taiwan University music forum.

I’ve just begun a three-year term as chair of the library-media department [of the district]. I’m also an adjunct professor of information studies at Syracuse University. Not only do I have the best job in the world, where I get to work with books and computers and children; when the day is done I get to come home to an amazing family. My wife, Tina, is also a teacher-librarian. In fact, we met in our first day of library school at Syracuse. Mina Mazaheri Raskin C’86, the Equal Employment Opportunity officer with the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Washington, received the 2008 Justice Management Division Award for outstanding service to the U.S. Department of Justice. David Robinov EAS’86 W’86 writes that he has left Eastdil Secured, after 20 years, and joined Acadia Realty Trust as senior vice president, investments. It is a fully integrated real-estate investment trust, which specializes in retail assets. He lives in Stamford, Conn., with his wife, Jackie Tepper C’86, and their two sons.

Gerard is a partner and managing director in the New York office of Diversified Search Ray & Berndtson, an international executive-search firm. He also serves as an emeritus member of the board of the Human Rights Campaign. Peter is vice president for consumer marketing at InterMedia Outdoors, Inc., in New York, a multi-media company that specializes in “the outdoor enthusiast market.” Together since they met in 2005 at a restaurant in Bridgehampton, they live on the Upper West Side with their four-year-old beagle Dave. Safaa El-Kogali C’88 in December was appointed director of the West Asia and North Africa region of the Population Council; she is based in Cairo. A Sudanese national, she had been a senior economist for the World Bank.

Dr. Tom Fullerton WG’88 has been appointed the J.P. Morgan Chase Professor at the College of Business Administration of the University of Texas at El Paso, where he directs the border-region modeling project, a research unit. He lives in El Paso with his wife, Lourdes, and sons Steven and Brett.

Jay Brodsky EAS’91 and Lynn Westwater C’91 are delighted to announce the birth of their third daughter, Anna Christine, on July 7 in Arlington, Va., who was welcomed home by big sisters Sofia (six) and Julia (three). Jay is CIO of Atlantic Media Company and Lynn directs the Italian program at the George Washington University.

Beth Haas C’91 is a partner in the Philadelphia law firm of Blank Rome LLP, who specializes in aviation litigation and toxic torts. In November she was appointed an adjunct professor at the Drexel University law school.

Al Meyers W’91 is co-founder and CEO of Past4Ward, LLC, an Atlanta-based start-up that is “developing an immersive learning platform that will provide middle and high schools with single- and multi-player interactive, 3-D environments, that include game play. It owns the exclusive video-game rights to the Rome Reborn 3-D model and plans to make the license available.” He writes that in April last year he left Turner Broadcasting after nearly 13 years there, most recently as vice president for strategic planning. “As one of the senior managers to incubate and launch GameTap,” he “had the privilege of doing extensive international travel, particularly to Asia” (he is a conversational Japanese speaker), and “observed the material shift in media-consumption habits amongst the Net Generation.”

Jennifer Friedman Sklarew C’92 and Dann Sklarew C’91write that after eight years with the U.S. Department of Commerce and the United Nations, respectively, they recently changed careers: he returned to his doctoral alma mater, George Mason University, as an associate professor of environmental science and policy. He also serves as associate director of its new Potomac Environmental Research and Education Center. She left her role as a Japanese international-trade specialist in order to begin her PhD in public policy at Mason. Their twin toddlers cheer them on “with daily doses of affection and wit.”

His “16-month-old brother, Jonas Christian, greeted him affectionately with many hugs and subsequently with an occasional, attempted kick, slap, and bite.” Professionally, Ed recently left his medical practice of five years at Mainline Health in Bryn Mawr and Paoli, Pa., to help develop a new hospitalist practice at the Chester County Hospital in West Chester. He has also started a healthcare-consulting firm to help hospitals establish and improve hospitalist programs. Currently only working with mid-Atlantic region hospitals, he hopes to eventually expand to other regions and expand the company into a medical-practice management firm.

John McGowan G’96 writes that he filmed and is a principal in a current commercial for Cooper University Hospital System in New Jersey. He also will appear, in the role of Robert Purvis, in an video installation at the African American Museum of Philadelphia. And on Jan. 16, he read Dr. M. L. King’s “I Have A Dream” speech in Union City for the fifth year running. He notes, he “continues to write, shoot, edit, and produce very short films,” and tinkers with his marimba and his intrigue with flash-based electronic music.

Nicholas Lardo W’02 married Jane Fisher on Oct. 4 at Glencoe Union Church and the Skokie Country Club, just north of Chicago. They live in Dallas, where she attends the Dallas Theological Seminary and works in the home-furnishings industry, and he is a private-equity professional at Brazos Private Equity Partners.

Nikki Cyter Sack C’03 married Dr. Stephen Sack GM’07 on April 13 at the Rittenhouse Hotel in Philadelphia—on Rittenhouse Square, where they shared a walk on their first date. Many Penn friends celebrated the special day with them. Maid of Honor Nadia Ebrahim Saldanha C’03 and Nikki became best friends their first day of freshman year as hallmates in what was then Brooks-Leidy in the Quad. I discovered that most technical folks are not very good at solving problems. Phone on Fire is like CSI-for-engineers: it reveals these skills in a fun-to-read format. Jaclyn A. Link C’07 writes that she and Benjamin H. Weiner C’06 are engaged to marry. They met in 2005 when they were both members of the Philomathean Society and lived on the same floor of Sansom Place West. She is a second-year student at Yale Law School and will spend this summer as a summer associate in the New York office of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton LLP. He is a third-year student at Harvard Law School and this fall will begin as a first-year associate in the New York office of Sullivan & Cromwell LLP.
