Tony Franco W’49 writes that he “again represented the U.S. in the Gardnar Mulloy Cup matches (for 80 and over tennis players) in Turkey. The U.S., which won in 2007, came in second to Australia. [I] qualified for the four-man team for the fourth consecutive year by reaching the finals of the U.S. grass-court championship and winning the doubles in both the national grass- and clay-court championships for the third straight year. In the World Individual Championships [I] reached the singles final (losing to a new U.S. 80-year-old) and won [in] the doubles.”

Myers W’54, the Emeritus Chair and Distinguished Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh, was an invited participant in the Sixth Balkan Congress of Otolaryngology in Head and Neck Surgery in October. He participated in a panel on education and postgraduate certification in the European Union, Turkey, and the U.S. He also spoke on “The Contemporary Management of Cancer of the Parotid Gland” at the 40th Jubilee Congress of the Hungarian Society of Otorhinolaryngology, Head, and Neck Surgery.

Simon W’56 writes that he has had a first novel published; 30 years ago he wrote a business book Managing Marketing Profitability. “The new book is Chance Encounter, a post-Holocaust novel … An assimilated American Jew, finding letters that had been returned from Poland over 60 years ago, seeks to find what happened to his grandmother’s family. Coincidently a retired German banker traces the wartime footsteps of his father, from his conscription in 1938 until loss of contact in early 1945, while serving on the Eastern Front. When the two meet each has a profound change in attitude from the start of their journey.”

Barry B. Levine C’61 writes that when his life history of the picaro Benjy Lopez was praised in Newsweek (Feb. 25, 2008), it “helped revive the 1980 story about the Puerto Rican immigrant to New York. As a result, Markus Wiener Publishers has recently brought out a new edition, under the title, Reflections on a Puerto Rican Life. An engaging autobiographical account, it … took issue with the myth of the victimized immigrant and proposed … an actor’s agency even under the most difficult circumstances.” The prologue for the new book claims it is “nothing short of a ‘genial masterpiece’ (see www.BenjyLopez.com).” Barry adds that he “is now completing another life history, ‘The Impermanence of Industry, Lessons Learned from the Last Great Garment Maker,’ about an itinerant pants-maker who has had factories throughout the globe.” He notes, “I am also happy that my son Harris M. Frederick Rankin MacFadden Jr. Gr’61, professor emeritus at Coppin State University in Baltimore, writes that he “has written ‘Lingering Life at 29 West Street, Glassboro, New Jersey,’ an appreciation of the ‘Walnut House,’ the Victorian home of Eben Whitney, a member of one of the major glassmaking families in southern New Jersey.” By request, the paper has been submitted to the Rowan University library and circulated through the greater Glassboro group for historic preservation.
Frank Pinkus WG’61 writes that he received a special letter of commendation for his six years of work as the Western regional director for undergraduate admissions for the University; it was presented by Peter V. Shoemaker C’86 on Nov. 20 at a private screening of the new James Bond film at Sony Studios in Los Angeles. During Frank’s six years the number of applications from the region more than tripled and the number of students attending Penn doubled.

A work of Western history that he began even as a Penn undergrad, he says his research method was heavily influenced by his American civilization major at Penn.

Natvar Bhavsar GFA’65 will have recent paintings exhibited at the Sundaram Tagore Gallery in Hong Kong from March 26; they had previously been shown over the winter at same-named galleries in New York and Beverly Hills, Calif. His painting “Delwara 1982” will be exhibited in The Third Mind: American Artists Contemplate Asia, 1860 to 1989 at the Guggenheim Museum until April 19. Eiser C’70 is vice president of medical education for the Mercy Health System of Southeastern Pennsylvania and associate dean and professor of medicine at Drexel University’s medical school. He recently received the Laureate Award for lifetime achievement in medical practice, research, and education from the Pennsylvania chapter of the American College of Physicians; he serves as vice-chair of its health and public-policy committee. He is also a fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. He and his wife, Barbara, who is president of Leading Impact, live in Bryn Mawr. Dr. Tom Kalman C’71 is pleased to report that his review article of problematic aspects of Internet-pornography usage was published as the lead paper in the December issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry; a condensed version of the paper was presented at the annual meeting of the APA last May. Tom also reports that his twins, Peter and Victoria, are thriving at Cornell University and Williams College, respectively.

Al Meyers W’91 is co-founder and CEO of Past4Ward, LLC, an Atlanta-based start-up that is “developing an immersive learning platform that will provide middle and high schools with single- and multi-player interactive, 3-D environments, that include game play. It owns the exclusive video-game rights to the Rome Reborn 3-D model and plans to make the license available.” He writes that in April last year he left Turner Broadcasting after nearly 13 years there, most recently as vice president for strategic planning. “As one of the senior managers to incubate and launch GameTap,” he “had the privilege of doing extensive international travel, particularly to Asia” (he is a conversational Japanese speaker), and “observed the material shift in media-consumption habits amongst the Net Generation.”

Currently only working with mid-Atlantic region hospitals, he hopes to eventually expand to other regions and expand the company into a medical-practice management firm.
