George J. Merva CCC’55, Springfield, Pa., in November celebrated 55 years at Penn. He is a laboratory administrator in the pathology department, and continues to work full time. James Fuhrman C’65 writes, “I have been working as a sculptor and teacher since graduation. In the past three years I have had one-person exhibitions [locally and in Miami] and a major installation at the Borowsky Gallery, Gershman Y, in Philadelphia. Last year I completed my 35th public-art installation at 7th and Delancey streets. Its title, A Part/Apart, is in eight languages; the forms and the poetry etched into its stainless steel ask how one belongs to or is separate from others. My next exhibition brings my work full circle, back to Penn, at the Burrison Art Gallery, University Club. It includes ink drawings and digital prints that are a vital element of the process of making sculptures. For this show I have created a new image, ‘Over and Over,’ as a tribute in honor of famed rowing coach Joe Burk W’34 Hon’88 [See “Obituaries,” Gazette July|August]; partial proceeds will be donated to the Joe Burk Rowing Fund. I currently live in Glenmoore, Pa., with my wife, Fern A. Denney.”

It was a fine day and this time I was not a spectator on the riverbank, as I had been in 1967, the year I graduated Penn, but a real live competitor. Imagine how exciting it was when I and the members of my Veterans Quad rowing out of the Maritime Rowing Center in Norwalk, Conn., received a gold medal for placing first in the 60-69 age category! Forty+ years later, a smashing victory.”
Dr. Marc Richmond C’67 recently joined Blue Shield of California as its regional medical director for southern California, having spent the last eight years with PacificCare of California and United HealthCare as market medical director. Dr. Joan MacCracken M’71 retired from her practice of pediatric endocrinology and has been developing her publishing company, Tiffin Press. Last summer the latest book, Cracked Marbles: Life Lessons From a Maine Surgeon, was released: “Short, well-written vignettes of doctor-patient relationships capture an earlier era when physicians had time to listen, and relate to their patients over time. The plea is to hold on to the art of medicine in the midst of the new fast-paced technologies.” Her company is “interested in helping other healthcare providers tell their stories.”

Michael P. Malloy L’76 is a professor at the University of the Pacific’s law school in Sacramento, Calif., who specializes in international economic sanctions. He writes that early last year he received an email from a doctoral student at the University of Shahid Beheshti in Tehran, who is researching banking regulation, but was unable to get Michael’s book Principles of Bank Regulation. Fortunately, Michael knew that export of informational materials, including publications, is exempt from the U.S. Treasury prohibitions: so he arranged for his publisher to contribute a copy of the book to the Iranian university. He noted, “Advanced research rises above the vagaries of international politics.”

We have risen up and elected Barack Obama to be the 44th president of our great nation. Since July 2007, I was inspired to participate and take charge of our destiny and worked passionately on the Obama campaign. Starting with four trips to Iowa to canvass and volunteer at events, then becoming a precinct captain in Minnesota, followed by becoming elected a national delegate from my congressional district, and attending the DNCC in Denver, I have, from the start, been an ardent advocate of an Obama presidency. Being at Invesco Field for Senator Obama’s acceptance speech was a highlight of my life. Ultimately, I took the last month of the campaign off from my job as a certified nurse-midwife to work full time as a volunteer. Then, on Nov. 4, 2008, we as a nation said, Yes, We Can! Though I have now returned to my ‘real job’ of providing healthcare to women and their babies, I understand that getting Barack Obama elected is the first step in changing the painful course our nation has been on over the past eight years. Dr. Aaron Gitler Gr’04, assistant professor of cell and developmental biology at Penn, has been awarded the NIH New Innovator Award, which provides $1.5 million over the next five years. He studies yeast cells as a model to understand the mechanisms in protein-misfolding diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, and as a tool to discover new treatments.
